SAMPLING
sample
• Population or Universe: It referstothegroupofpeople, itemsor units
underinvestigation andincludes everyindividual.
• Sample: a collection consisting of a part or subset of the objects or
individualsofpopulationwhichis selectedforthepurpose, representingthe
population
• Sampling: This is the prosess in which a part of something
taken for study is known as “sampling”
• individuals from polulation.
Definition
NEED OF SAMPLING
• Largepopulationcanbeconvenientlycovered.
• Time,moneyandenergyissaved.
• Helpfulwhenunitsofareaarehomogenous.
• Usedwhenpercentaccuracyisnotacquired.
Sampling Process
•Specification of objectives: The objectives of
carrying out sampling is the first and foremost step
in sampling procedure Because all other steps will
followfromthis objective.
Identify thesamplingframe:
•Need to clearly define from which population or
universewillthe samplebepickedfrom.
Specifythesamplingunit:
–We need to decide on whom to contact in order to obtain
thedata required
–Need to be careful while selecting the sampling unit, as we
needto besureofwhetherwewillgettherequireddatafrom
therespondent ornot.
Types of sampling
Probablity sampling
Non –probablity sampling
ADVANTAGES OF SAMPLING
• Economical:Reducethecostcomparetoentirepopulation.
• Increased speed: Collection of data, analysis and Interpretation
of dataetc.takelesstimethanthepopulation.
• Accuracy: Due to limited area of coverage, completeness
and accuracyispossible.
DISADVANTAGES OF SAMPLING
•Biasedness: Chances of biased selection leading to incorrect
conclusion. Selection of true representative sample: Sometimes it is
difficultto select therightrepresentativesample.
•Needforspecializedknowledge:Theresearcherneedsknowledge,
training and experience in sampling technique, statistical analysis
and calculationofprobableerror.
•Impossibility of sampling: Sometimes population is too small or
too heterogeneoustoselectarepresentativesample.
