Curthirds loves her job. She loves most the flexibility of being a counselor and being able to work
with different students. Her least favorite thing about being counselor is the non–counselor duties
the principal tries to put on her. She said she does advocate for her profession, but sometimes the
principal or other administrator doesn't want to listen that some duties are not part of being a
counselor. In her training in school for counseling she said that the course work was the foundation
of her profession, but she learned the most on the job. She said there was a few times she had to call
her professor or another school counselor to talk about what she should do in a situation. She said
that even though she has been in the profession for 17 years she still comes across some problems
where she needs to consult with another counselor. Her advice to me was to take advantage of all
training opportunities available and to build a relationship with the students as much as possible.
She said knowing about technology is also helpful. An important tip she offered me was to avoid
taking your work home with you. This meaning if you have a bad situation come up with a student
that hits you hard to avoid bring it home because it will reflect on your family and can affect your
mood and judgement. If it is something that is that bad that touches your heart to find an outlet. She
said she will call a fellow school counselor to consult and talk to or either journal about her feelings.

ASCA, the American School Counseling Association, is the foremost association that provides

In the case of Atici's research study, nine school counselors in Turkey, who were identified as highly
effective in their work as school counselors and graduate student supervisors, had their types
counseling activities examined, as well as, their self–efficacy. Atici compared the quantitative
research previously mentioned to check for consistency and validity of the outcomes of her own
research.
Method
As mentioned previously, Atici's study is a qualitative study, focusing on the activities of school
counselors and their self–efficacy as they work in their roles with students, teacher, parents and

I believe the next important ingredient for multicultural competence is cultural skills. A skilled
counselor utilizes the interventions that are client based and which serve clients needs. A positive
reaction would be to be connected to those different cultures communication is the key. In

School Counselors job isn't to teach students moral rules and values or to prevent students from
making their own choices based on their values. Admittedly, it can be a fine line to walk between
not imposing our values yet helping students develop social skills and self– understanding that will

Analytical Reflection
Introduction
As counselors approach their careers, it is important to make observations of local schools with
counseling opportunities. Observations help give a better understanding of the school culture and
demographics associated within that school. School Data has long been a method used to obtain
school specifics as well as the ability to compare and improve in areas needed. Schools all over
represent different demographics therefore making the statistic sway one way to another. One school
in particular that I was able to observe and get a feel for its culture was Columbia Elementary
School. Columbia Elementary School has one counselor shared between Mountain View Middle
School. The counselor at Columbia is in charge of kindergarten through fourth grade students.
Throughout my observation, I was able to see a multiple amount of counseling techniques. These
counseling techniques addressed multiple levels of behavioral issues among students. In my efforts
to gain as much information as possible I was also able to observe the counselor's efforts in
collaborating with school faculty, parents, as well as students.

When attempting to locate a School Counselor to interview, I decided to interview a counselor at a
local middle school located in Coal City, West Virginia. This interview will familiarize you with a
School Counselor by the name of James Payne. You will gain a better understanding of his

Professional History
James Payne is one of two School Counselors at Independence Middle School located in Coal City,
West Virginia. He received his undergraduate degree at Concord University in Health and Physical
Education. Unlike most middle school counselors, Mr. Payne has a special history; He is currently a
Major in the United States Army. Following the attacks on September 11, 2001, Mr. Payne joined
the Army to serve his country. Mr. Payne was enlisted in the Army for around six years. He is still
active in the Army Reserves.
Following his military service, Mr. Payne decided to return to school to obtain his Master's degree in
School Counseling. Mr. Payne graduated with his Master's degree in Counseling from West Virginia

The Role Of A School Counselor
The role of a school counselor has taken on numerous descriptions in the last decade. Although the
American School Counselor Association (ASCA) and Texas Education Code (TEC) provide the
basic roles and responsibilities of school counselors, every school district and even campus has
modified that description to fit the needs of the campus. Every administrator, teacher, student, and
counselor may provide a different explanation of the role that counselors play in education.
Regardless of the role description or explanations provided by counselors themselves, the primary
focus of a school counselor is to "fully develop each student's academic, career, personal, and social

The role of a school counselor can be both rewarding and challenging. One of the most challenging

It is going to be hard for me to write about my career because at this moment I am in the middle of
switching them. For the past four years I have felt called to be a counselor. I can understand
teenagers, which is what I wanted my counseling group to be, more than anyone. I felt called to
counseling because I wanted to use my past trials and mistakes to help others. I felt like that was the
only way I would be able to serve God. I felt if I did not stay with my career in counseling that I
would be betraying God because I was not directly showing His light to others through my career. I
did not waiver from that field of study because I was scared. I did not open up myself to every
option available. What I did not realize was that there does not have to be a specific way I show
exemplify God in my life. It never occurred to me that every calling and vocation exemplified God
because He was the one that gave me the ideas! After taking the Strengths Assessment and listening
to the lectures on vocation and calling, I better understand how I am supposed to understand my
career.
The first message of the vocation lectures that stuck out to me was the idea of the idolatry of choice.
I completely agree that we, as Christians, sometimes get caught up in the process of decision–
making. We should allow God to make our final decisions. I also think, though, that God puts in our

I find it this more reasonable and effective for a counselor to do. A research based program has done
all the work of creating a variable (experimental group) and a control group to show if a program's
effectiveness. This means the counselor can see the results of the experimental group and see if this
would work for the group intended. As mentioned by Carey and Dimmitt, research based
interventions ensure that the school's resources are invested wisely. This means, the counselor can
rely on the program and be able to predict positive outcomes.
Another method for a counselor to use science in their practice is to make sure the intervention or
program used has strong research support. While many may not hold strong support to be shown to

more difficult for counselors to implement due to time constraints and resources. While there may

effectiveness, as well as the usefulness of available supervision (Borders & Usher, 1992; Henderson
& Lampe, 1992). During a school counseling master's education program, there is ample
supervision, both on–site and through the university, during the practicum and internship field
experiences (Peterson & Deuschle, 2006; Studer & Oberman, 2006). However, it has been noted
that clinical supervision of school counselors post–graduation has not been utilized in the most
effective way (Linton & Deuschle, 2006). Several studies have examined the reason behind the lack
of effective supervision within a school setting. Some researchers suggest that there is incongruence
between the daily tasks of school counselors and models of clinical supervision most often utilized
(Luke, Ellis, & Bernard, 2011). There also appears to be limited research on whether school

Scenario Of A School Counselor
The role of a school counselor is to successfully reach the child where they are and to find ways that
will help benefit them to succeed no matter what comes their way. As a counselor it is important to
use methods and techniques that work best in the situation that is presented as well as what works
best for that student. It takes careful consideration on which direction to go when counseling
students as all students are not the same and everyone handles things different. The focus of the
counselor is to provide guidance, support and direction for all students.
In the following scenarios we see two very different situations that need to be addressed in very
different ways. The first scenario is a young boy, named Steven. He has been in three different foster

As a school counselor and a student of educational technology, I was both empathetic and frustrated
by the results. I believe heavily in a data driven school counseling program and the effect that it has

As a future school counselor, I can reflect that these past eight weeks, I have a full understanding of
