This article discusses the negative effects that media portrayals of ideal bodies can have on both men's and women's self-esteem and body image. It explores how the media is partly responsible for increasing rates of body dissatisfaction, dieting, and eating disorders. Additionally, it notes that the pressure on men to achieve muscular physiques similar to celebrities is also influencing men at younger ages than women. While some view media images as motivating for fitness, it can also negatively impact over 1/3 of boys who feel they need to lose weight or have tried dieting multiple times.
