Livestock supports the livelihoods of approximately 987 million people in rural areas globally, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, where it contributes significantly to the agricultural GDP. However, challenges such as water scarcity, policy neglect, and climate change hinder sustainable livestock production and threaten the well-being of pastoral communities. IFAD aims to improve rural livelihoods by promoting integrated water-livestock management approaches that enhance resource access, sustainability, and community capacity in managing these critical assets.
