He had lost his breath because he was so passionate about his fury that he forgot about his physical
ability. In this quote a metaphor is used and two short sentences are repeated. The short sentences
emphasize his lack of education, showing that he cannot form complex intellectual sentences. The fact
that the word is repeated twice indicates his passion for what he s doing. The metaphor is also an
example of hyperbole as it over exaggerates on how exhausted he is due to his inability to control his
emotions. This suggests that the persona is angry and frustrated at his life. The snowman could
symbolize what he doesn t have; therefore, portraying his rage towards the snowman. The snowman
could also be symbolized as himself, which shows his self destructive behavior as he tries to punish
the part of himself that he sees in the inanimate object. In the other poem, the character does
something similar as he squishes a fly against the window using his thumb . This shows how the
persona releases all his irritation on a vulnerable creature that cannot do anything to escape from the
situation. This suggests that he loves the feeling of over empowerment but it also suggests that he is a
coward as he displays his rage on a susceptible and tiny creature. It also portrays how cruel and
disheartened of a person he is as the fly didn t have anything to do with why he was left out and
isolated all along his life. Despite of this fact, he still went forward with killing the poor fly because of

The 1930 s was a decade of extremely hard times, following the stock market crash and an extreme
depression. In spite of the tremendous hardships in America during this decade, it also became a time
of great music that is still remembered today. Jazz music was highly popular in this time, and Billie
Holiday was a famous jazz performer. She stood out from many other musicians because of her
intense and passionate performances. Jazz arose from unacceptable segments of society, but quickly
grew like wildfire. We often think of the 1930 s as the decade that jazz became civilized, and famous
throughout popular culture through the work of pioneering artists like Billie Holiday. People did not
own televisions or cable, so radio was their main source of entertainment, and music during this

with a special meaning and held in common by members of a group: particularly in social, ethnic, or
age groups. Stereotypes about the Appalachian people are made of its people and culture as a whole.
These people face a number of negative stereotypes. The people of Appalachia are often portrayed as

The workers who were known to scab were protected by people who were known as gun thugs. Gun
thugs, private mine guards who also had full county deputy privileges, were able to work outside the
walls of their employers. Outside of the mines they worked under Sheriff J.H. Blair. This was a man
who made his allegiance to the business owners clear. The citizens of Harlan lost all faith they may
have had about the impartiality of their law enforcement. In Harlan County during this time there was
no such thing as neutral you were on one side or the other, therefore, if you wasn t a gun thug, you
were a part of the union. The miners began to arm themselves due to the police brutality and attack
from fellow starving jobless miners. There was a lot of anger and blame that was passed around,
therefore, small fights between gun thugs and the publicly employed law enforcement broke out. Also,
scabbing miners were often beaten. The most violent unprovoked attack by mine workers occurred on
May 5, 1931, and became known as the Battle of Evarts, in which three company men and one miner
were killed. By June 17th, the last mine had returned to work (Appalachian Center).
