Hinduism And The Indian Culture
After reading the article, I think rituals have some basic structures of meaning, and there are number
of ways to show that rituals are meaningful. In the following thesis I choose Hinduism as an example
to show how rituals are meaningful, how it relates to the living context of the Indian people, how the
Indians enact the Hindu rituals, and so on.
India is a country full of mysteries and differences. It has a long history, a profound yet unique culture,
with diversified nationalities, races, religions, languages and a huge population. The pursuit of
secularism and inveteracy of sectarianism have brought huge influence to the Indian society. As the
mainstream culture in India, Hinduism plays an important role in the Indian society and has dominated
almost 2000 years of its history. Although in the following years since, the Indian culture gradually
becomes a combination of different races, religions and languages, Hinduism still remains to be the
key to dig into the development of the culture and society of India.
First, the Hindu s worship of the imperishability of gods is the spiritual power for the Indians faith and
persistence in overcoming difficulties and obstacles in the long history of development.
There are numerous gods in Hinduism, in which the most important ones including the Creator
Brahma, the Preserver Vishnu and the Destroyer Siva. Brahma created the earth, the mortal world and
the heaven, Vishnu safeguards the world and preserves the order and peace in

How Did The Spanish Conquests Influence The Americans
When the European explorers/conquistadors such as Hernán Cortes found the Americas which they
referred to as the New World, Catholic missionaries flooded the land. Catholic monarch Isabella
believed that the Indios were naive people who needed to be saved. She didn t want the Spanish men
going to the New World to mistreat or enslave the Indios because she believed that God wanted them
to become Catholics. The priest sent to the New World believed that the Mayan hieroglyphics were
evil and that they worshiped the Devil. So during the Spanish conquest the Spaniards destroyed a lot
of the hieroglyphics and burned their books. Also Cortés had caused the fall of the Mechica capital

Greedlessness In Washington Irving s The Legend Of Sleepy...
Washington Irving wrote The Legend of Sleepy Hollow in 1820, which tells the story of Ichabod
Crane, a schoolmaster who persistently frightens himself with supernatural beings he supposes he sees
and hears on his way home from school. At one point in the story, Crane rivals for the love of a lady
with a man named Abraham Van Brunt. This man, known as Brom Bones to the townspeople, took
advantage of Ichabod Crane s credulousness to scare him out of town through a prank in which he
impersonated the dreaded Headless Horseman, the ghost of Sleepy Hollow. This caused Ichabod to
flee town out of terror. Ichabod Crane s characteristics of greed, superstition, and fearfulness ended up
causing his downfall. Ichabod Crane s greediness hindered his relationship with the townspeople,
consequently making some people, such as Brom Bones, more than happy to expel Crane from the
town, and others not sorry when he left. Ichabod had a great gluttonous appetite, so he lived
successively a week at a time with his pupils and their families, because they simply could not afford
to house such a gourmand. Moreover, he earned the distaste of the other men of the town while trying
to earn the affections of a lady named Katrina Van Tassel, whom he hoped to marry only because of
her wealth. He knew if he was to marry her, he would have many delicious meals awaiting him. The
pedagogue s mouth watered as he looked upon this sumptuous promise of luxurious winter fare.

Free Descriptive Essays-The Yellow Wallpaper
The television flickers, one of the few sources of light in the darkened room. The screen casts echoes
of flashing lights across the attentive faces of its viewers and the charming, floral wallpaper. On
display, the leader of the nation waves jovially to the masses of onlookers as he drives in an
extravagant procession. The ecstatic hubbub of the jubilant parade crackles over the cheap speakers in
the room.
A hushed couple sits in their home, surveying the cheerful scene. As they sit in a fashion both separate

The man leans over his project, making last minute preparations. He sits unsteadily on the edge of the

Murky, grey eyes glint in the scattered light as he reconfigures the colored wires and places in

Suddenly, an enormous crashing noise sounds from the television, the flickering colors bleeding
orange and scalding yellow into the dimness of the quiet, quarters. The couple jumps, and they both

a small number of Asian countries, these economies bang back. These economies maintained high
interest rates thereby creation them attractive to foreign investors. As a result these economies

early nineties. The whole of nineties were used to experiment and fine tune an efficient and effective
system. The badla system was stopped to control unnecessary volatility while the derivatives segment

has led to cross border integration. Also, exchanges have begun to offer cross border trading to
facilitate overseas investment options for investors. This not only increased the appeal of the exchange

Essay about Sexual Frustration in Alfred Hitchcock s Rope
On May 21, 1924, two highly intelligent university scholars from Chicago, Richard Loeb and Nathan
Leopold, executed their highly calculated plan for the cold blooded murder of a distant relative of
Loeb #960;s, 14 year old Bobby Franks. As students of Nietzsche #960;s philosophy, Loeb and
Leopold had set out to commit the #8805;perfect murder #8804; in order to actualize the belief that
they were of an elite group, superior to the common man, to whom the standard moral code did not
apply. So infamous is the story of their murder and eventual detainment that it has become entrenched
in American popular culture, with numerous books and films aspiring to recreate it in vivid detail.
Amongst these, Alfred Hitchcock #960;s Rope ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In fact, the real murder, on which the film is based, was carried out by bludgeoning the victim, which
suggests that the homosexuality of the men was of enough significance in Hitchcock #960;s mind to
warrant a more suggestive alternative. The flaccid structure of a rope is quite obviously an association
to the sexual impotence they experience as a consequence of society #960;s disapproval of what it
designates as #8805;perverse #8804; erotic expressions. When the boys #960; housekeeper returns
from her shopping, Phillip fears that she will discover what has transpired, and the young men
exchange particularly telling words which exemplify this idea even further:
P: I was sure she #960;d notice it.
B. Notice what?
P: The rope of course. Brandon, we #960;ve got to hide it.
ä
B: It #960;s only a piece of Rope, Phillip, an ordinary household article, why hide it? It belongs in the
kitchen drawer.
In other words, Phillip is unintentionally giving voice to society #960;s denunciation of homosexuality
and, consequently, to his fear of exposure and the shame it would bring upon him. In terms of this
discussion, however, the aspect of the film which carries the strongest Freudian implication is the very
fact that the rope, a phallic symbol of sexual frustration, is the actual weapon chosen to commit
murder, one of the most violent and explosive acts of aggression. One can

scientific discovery possesses productive and destructive powers.

Fluids from one of the artificial blossoms dripped onto a colored reptile s head, causing it to contort
violently and pass away agonizingly. This imparts how science is able to devise potent materials
capable of stripping organisms of their lives. A delicate winged insect was attracted by the heavy
perfumes of the artificial flowers and was killed, suggesting that detrimental scientific discoveries can
destroy innocence by luring unsuspecting individuals into its pitfall and annihilate them. The
psychotic scientist, Giacomo Rappaccini, is described as a sickly, elderly man lacking warmth of
hearth and wearing black clothing. This indicates that the process of making scientific improvements
itself can be damaging to the scientist and can eliminate them of their morals, as black symbolizes evil
which suits Rappaccini due to him seeking human test subjects. Once Beatrice realizes the enormity of
the mischief imposed by Rappaccini, she promptly consumed the phial with the antidote and begins to
fade away while having a desperate dialogue with Rappaccini and the main protagonist, Giovanni
Guasconti. This implies that the disastrous effects of scientific advancement can have such a profound
impact on an individual that he considers death or the potential of death as an alternative to escape the
horrors of science. The startling descriptions of the negative aspects of

Behavior Change Project Examples
I chose to do my behavior change project on improving my diet. I put my own little twist on it with
the way I measured my success and I had to supplement it to reach my goals, but I feel that it was
done really well. My goal was at the end of the four weeks to be able to run 3.1 miles in 18:45. I have
run times close to this before, but that was a couple of years ago. At the beginning of this project my
time for 3.1 miles was 20:36. I knew that if I was committed and worked really hard that I would be
able to do it though. I chose to measure my behavior change this way due to the fact that I have a very
busy life and I am on the high school cross country team. I figured I would already be running each
week and I have a race every week that I can measure my time against my goal. So I was just trying to
save some time in my schedule by partially combining two activities. My goal for the end of the first

The Miraculous Substance Of Radium Girls
In the early 1900 s radium was the latest miracle substance (Hersher Blum, 2014). Salesmen promised
that it extended lifespans, increased sex drive, made women more beautiful, and had many other
fantastic effects. The world was infatuated with radium and displayed this by putting it in slews of
items including face cream, bread, chocolate, suppositories, toy sets for children, drinking water (as
shown in figure 1), toothpaste, watch faces, and many more products. (List from scribal.com, 2007) It
was used often in pharmaceuticals and described by advertisers as nature s way to health. Doctors

Essay on The Mytilene Debate and Athenian Debate
The book written by Thucydides, History of the Peloponnesian War, contains two controversial
debates between distinguished speakers of Athens. The two corresponding sides produce convincing
arguments which can be taken as if produced as an honest opinion or out of self interest. The two
debates must be analyzed separately in order to conclude which one and which side was speaking out
of honest opinion or self interest, as well as which speakers are similar to each other in their approach
to the situation. In the Mytilene Debate the two speakers are Creon, presenting the side in favor of
killing the people, and Diodotus, on the opposing side. The two speakers present their opinions on the

Diodotus takes the opposing side of Cleon, preferring not to kill the Mytileans. He does believes that

Similarities Between Religion And Religion
Allison Houston
Mr. Corso
Astronomy

For as long as the earth has existed, there has been a war between religion and science. To what extent
do religion and science agree? Can religious and scientific beliefs be conductive or do they pose an
obstacle to each other? Although many argue that science and religion don t coincide, I believe that
they have many similarities with each other and there large sources of evidence that prove this. One of
the largest factors that leads me to believe that religion and science are compatible is the common goal
each of them is trying to achieve. Although Science and Religion use different methods, they
compliment each other in the sense that without going hand and hand they can not accomplish their
end goal which is figuring out the meaning and coming of our existence. Science explains natural
phenomena by a rational formation of a hypothesis, collection of data, testing the hypothesis against
observations or experimental results, and submitting conclusions to a broader community for further
review and testing. Religion is finding meaning and purpose, or explaining phenomena, by revelation
from a personal or supernatural source. What you ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Steven Weinberg, a psychiatrist and atheist, said that sometimes nature seems more beautiful than
strictly necessary. Although Weinberg intensely disliked religion he argues that science and spiritual
matter cannot be kept in separate compartments. Although he disagrees with religion, Weinberg ties
science and religion together by seeing that the earth is not just pure science, there are unexplainable
things to the earth and questions as to why nature is beautiful rather than strictly necessary. Weinberg
says that science can help each of us grow up as an individual. Without religion, science can only
explain things to a certain extent and makes the universe seem much more confusing and

White Supremacy In The Bluest Eye
You cannot hate your origin and not end up hating yourself is a quote by Malcolm X in his speech,
You Can t Hate The Roots of the Tree Without Hating The Tree. This quote relates with many of the
focal themes of The Bluest Eye, such as internalized racism, colorism and white supremacy. Malcolm
X s speech and Toni Morrison s, The Bluest Eye both highlight self hatred and white supremacy, as
well as the effects it has had on the black community.
Pecola Breedlove, the protagonist of The Bluest Eye, feels insecure about her features: Each night,
without fail, she prayed for blue eyes. Fervently, for a year she had prayed. Although somewhat
discouraged, she was not without hope. To have something as wonderful as that happen would take a

In The Bluest Eye, the subject of white supremacy is addressed through the character of Cholly
Breedlove, Pecola Breedlove s father. As a young man, Cholly was going to have sex with a white
woman named Darlene. Before that could happen, he was disrupted by two white men and was forced
by the white men to have sex with Darlene, telling him to Get on wid it, nigger and make it good
(Morrison 148). This scene is a metaphor for white supremacy, the idea of white people controlling
black people in everything that do. Malcolm X explains this concept through the idea of uniting black
people: You know why [white people] say Negroes are lazy? Because they want Negroes to be lazy.
They always say Negroes can t unite, because they don t want Negroes to unite. And once they put this
thing in the Negro s mind, they feel [black people] try to fulfill that image. If they say you can t unite
Black people and then you come to them to unite them, they won t unite, because it s been said that
they re not supposed to unite (X 1965). Both of these passages highlight how white people can control
the way black people think as well as the way they act. X makes it seem like it is a game of mind
control, while Morrison puts it in a dark, graphic and horrifying

Zeitoun, By Dave Eggers
In the novel, Zeitoun by Dave Eggers, the main character, Abdulrahman Zeitoun, is an immigrant of
Syria who stays in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina and is arrested due to the suspicion of looting,
but really is arrested because of his race and how he looks. Zeitoun s faith and loyalty to his
community and home is tested through the many obstacles of Hurricane Katrina and including his
religion, racism, and his very own dignity. The author, Dave Eggers who is also the speaker in novel,
proves all examples of Zeitoun s challenges credibly in the text.
Quote 1: Zeitoun s grandmother had stayed put during countless storms in her home on Arwad Island,
and he planned to do the same. A home was worth fighting for. (Eggers, 70)
Eggers shows in this quote how Zeitoun refuses to leave his home of New Orleans with his family.
Eggers portrays that even though a house may seem replaceable, Zeitoun still chooses to not leave his
home like his family who did not leave their home land of Arwad Island. The author also shows the
symbolism of Zeitoun s refusal to leave is like his assimilation coming to America. The symbolism of
Zeitoun s refusal to leave also shows how dedicated he is to his new country of America and refuses to
give up when faced with discrimination. Eggers proves that Zeitoun continues fighting for his home in
the United States.

The Existence Of Antiheros In Don Draper s
The antihero phenomenon in television is one that has proven to spark a successful movement,
confirming it has the potential for a large, loyal audience base. Aristotle and philosopher, David
Hume, have been proven wrong, stating their belief that the antihero model would never succeed.
David Hume claimed these antiheros or in his terms, rough heroes would be unsuccessful because we
are displeased to find the limits of vice and virtue so much confounded and we are not able to bear an
affection for characters we plainly discover to be blameable. So why do so many serial narratives
centered on antiheros exist and why are audiences so attached to these types of characters? Antiheros

The audience needs to be invested in the emotional fate of that character. A driving factor that is an
essential component in creating a successful antihero character is the possibility of redemption. For
Walter White, Don Draper, and Tony Soprano the realization of their self deception is the key to the
possibility of their redemption: Walter White believes everything he is doing is justified by securing
his family s financial future, Don Draper can t admit his stolen identity, and Tony Soprano cannot be
honest about the nature of his lifestyle. For each of these characters at a level they understand their
self deception but at the same time they can t stand to admit what they ve become. However, the
audience hopes one day they will admit what they ve become and they ll redeem themselves. We have
hope Walter White and Tony Soprano will eventually get out of their lifestyle. We want Don Draper to
admit his identity. Although Dexter is aware of his deception, he still experiences an unease with
himself and with the relationships he has with others. There is a slight understanding that Dexter is
aware of the wrongfulness in his lifestyle that drives the audience to hope that maybe he ll stop killing
one day to protect those that he

Aristotle s Influence On The History Of Psychology
Chapter One Objectives 1. Describe Aristotle s role in the history of psychology. Aristotle, a Greek
Philosopher, was born in 384 B.C.E. and was known to show an interest in living things. To find out
how plants and animals organs sustained life, he collected and dissected them. He deliberately
engaged on studying the reproduction of life to see how each generation and actions of living people
spoke, remembered, and learned. Aristotle defined the meaning of psyche as the essence of life.
Translated to mean life from the ancient Greek, but also almost shares the same meaning as breath.
The word logo means the study of. The famous Greek Philosopher believed that the word psyche
escaped from the last dying breath. Today, modern psychologists believe the same thoughts that
Aristotle believed long ago, and still study the same thoughts, feelings and actions. Plato, a man who
believed by just thinking about it, you could understand and achieve fully, trained Aristotle in
philosophy. Aristotle did not agree on Plato s belief, and soon came up with his own. He believed that
in order to understand, you must observe what is being studied by looking, listening or touching it.
Aristotle s method of studying is now the base of contemporary science. Modern scientists are now
engineering more efficient and precise ways of observing. In conclusion, Aristotle awoke the world
with the study of live, which grew to the study of modern science of phycology. 2. Identify the four

Alternative Fuel, Global Climate Change and the Categorical Imperative
While environmental questions are frequently channeled through practical and economic prisms, it is
also appropriate to consider our econolgy as a function of morality. The ethical dilemmas which
contribute to our policies and our behaviors regarding the use of fossil fuels and our attention to global
climate change are frequently overshadowed by more immediate concerns of survival or mere
comfort.
However, German philosopher Immanuel Kant offers what has become an important if decidedly rigid
framework for facing such an ethical dilemma. According to Kant s deontological constructs,
delineated in his landmark 1785 work, Groundwork for the Metaphysics of Morals, morality is to
treated as a science. In treating this as a science subject to the immutable laws of nature, morality
becomes the purview of what Kant calls the categorical imperative. For Kant, questions of morality
and ethical decision making are to be settled by an unchanging set of principles shared by all men. To
this end, Kant argues that physics will have its empirical part, but it will also have a rational one; and
likewise ethics although here the empirical part might be called specifically practical anthropology,
while the rational part might properly be called morals. (Kant, 20) From this view, Kant takes the
perspective that ethical free will is a danger to civil and social order. Absent the categorical
imperative, man is left

A new platform would be more lethal, more effective, and more reliable than the M4. A major
concerned with the M4 is that the M4 is prone to jamming and malfunctioning due to fouling. Fouling
is caused by carbon residue build up in the weapon system. In combat situations the M4 has been
unreliable, because the weapon misfires. M4 malfunctions include failure to fire, failure to eject,
failure to chamber a round, and failure to feed. The Army conduct a dust test in 2007 for testing M4A1
reliability. The Army testers and engineers selected ten M4s and three other weapon systems shot 6000
rounds in the dust chamber. M4 has 683 stoppages and perform the worst against other weapons. In
other words, the M4 jammed every 68 rounds (Lowes, 2007). The other selected weapons are the
Heckler Koch 416, XM8, and the FN SCAR. (Lowes, 2007). The XM8 jammed every 472 rounds and
the HK 416 jammed every 257 rounds. The XM8 has the lowest stoppage rate. If the Army adopted
one of these three weapons, it will significantly increases reliabilities in the combat zone. The second
issue with the M4A1 is also closely related to malfunction. The M4 is easy to overheat after prolonged
firing. There s two factors that cause this problem. The first factor is the high pressure and high
velocity round shooting out from the barrel. The other factor is the gas operation mechanism of the

The Constitution, when first introduced, set the stage for much controversy in the United States. The
two major parties in this battle were the Federalists and the Anti Federalists. The Federalists, such as
James Madison, were in favor of ratifying the Constitution. On the other hand, the Anti Federalists,
such as Patrick Henry and Richard Henry Lee, were against ratification. Each party has their own
beliefs on why or why not this document should or should not be passed. These beliefs are displayed

He thinks that this system would never really be followed. The senate, he says, is not structured well
enough to protect the rights of the people. One of his main points is the leaning towards a monarchy.
He describes that it would be very easy for the President to become a king. Henry seems to also
contradict himself on this point when he says that he would rather have a king and lords than a chief
who controls the army. Henry s final point is about the creation of an absolute ruler. Like he says
about the monarchy, it would be easy for this to happen. If the President has control of the army, it
would be easy to declare himself an absolute leader.
Richard Henry Lee is another Anti Federalist who displays his views throughout his article. Lee
discusses some arguments, but the main point of his article is about how the Constitution came to be

The Seductive Lure of the Temptress As a seductive force of nature, luring with the tongues of pure
elegant lust and desire, the temptresses villainous ways can always be a struggle for a character to
even resist. Being able to use temptation as a gift or art, the temptress is a mythical archetype in which
is a distraction to the protagonist on his journey, causing the character to forget the overall quest they

luring men to her sexual ways, but a force of nature could easily tempt someone of the same exact

Examples Of Emotional Neglect In Young Men
Emotional Neglect in Young Men
I often hear it in movies and from parents talking to their adolescent son, Be a man. To me, that seems
like a way for an annoyed parent to try to control their child and make them strive for maturity. But
what do simple sayings like this really do to a boy? By telling him to be that man that he isn t, he
thinks that he needs to put on an act, and in turn, his young and childlike emotions are suppressed and
not dealt with. Fathers often tell their sons to be a man because of their lack of tolerance towards their
(obvious) childish behavior. They think it will make a child mature, but in reality, it puts a mask over
that child. It is detrimental to boys to teach them to hide their feelings. The first five years of a child s
life are the most important for their brain development, their experiences during this time shape both
their social and emotional skills, as well as their learning abilities.( Child Development and Early

Education For Leisure By Carice Duffy
In poems, Stealing and Education for leisure , Duffy uses a range of literary devices like colloquial

Stealing the persona is presented as lonely and isolated from society so they resort to stealing just for
the pleasure of doing it. Similarly, in Education for leisure , an egotistical young adult is portrayed
who is killing living things to undo his intense isolation. These poems were written by Duffy to show
the terrible situation the UK faced in the 1980 s.

While the character was kicking the snowman furiously again, again . His breath ripped out in rags .
He had lost his breath because he was so passionate about his fury that he forgot about his physical
ability. In this quote a metaphor is used and two short sentences are repeated. The short sentences
emphasize his lack of education, showing that he cannot form complex intellectual sentences. The fact
that the word is repeated twice indicates his passion for what he s doing. The metaphor is also an
example of hyperbole as it over exaggerates on how exhausted he is due to his inability to control his
emotions. This suggests that the persona is angry and frustrated at his life. The snowman could
symbolize what he doesn t have; therefore, portraying his rage towards the snowman. The snowman
could also be symbolized as himself, which shows his self destructive behavior as he tries to punish
the part of himself that he sees in the inanimate object. In the other poem, the character does
something similar as he squishes a fly against the window using his thumb . This shows how the
persona releases all his irritation on a vulnerable creature that cannot do anything to escape from the
situation. This suggests that he loves the feeling of over empowerment but it also suggests that he is a
coward as he displays his rage on a susceptible and tiny creature. It also portrays how cruel and
disheartened of a person he is as the fly didn t have anything to do with why he was left out and
isolated all along his life. Despite of this fact, he still went forward with killing the poor fly because of
his failure to control his rage. It is mentioned that he commits this purposeless murder with his thumb

The Music Of The 1930 S
The 1930 s was a decade of extremely hard times, following the stock market crash and an extreme
depression. In spite of the tremendous hardships in America during this decade, it also became a time
of great music that is still remembered today. Jazz music was highly popular in this time, and Billie
Holiday was a famous jazz performer. She stood out from many other musicians because of her
intense and passionate performances. Jazz arose from unacceptable segments of society, but quickly
grew like wildfire. We often think of the 1930 s as the decade that jazz became civilized, and famous
throughout popular culture through the work of pioneering artists like Billie Holiday. People did not
own televisions or cable, so radio was their main source of entertainment, and music during this
decade was both up beat and a source of relaxation. Strange Fruit defied musical category because it
was considered too artsy to be folk, and too explicitly political to fit into jazz. This is why Strange
Fruit became such a powerful phenomenon. Many other artists later took on this song, changing the
genre but still portraying the same message. Nina Simone dramatized Strange Fruit in the context of
the Civil Rights Movement. More important artists like Jeff Buckley, Rene Marie, Labor Camp
Orchestra, and many others made their own rendition on the song, still leaving all of their audiences

East India Company Case Study
East India Company was originally named The Governor and Company of Merchants of London
trading into East Indies . It was incorporated in Britain on the 31st December 1600, by a charter of
Queen Elizabeth which settled its constitution, powers and privileges. It obtained a royal charter from
Queen Elizabeth I, granting it monopoly at the trade with the East. A joint stock company, shares
primarily owned by British Merchants and aristocrats, the East India Company had no direct link to
the British government. The Queen though had sovereign power over this polity. If the state of Britain
was considered a polity, then East India Company, a corporation in modern sense of the term was a
citizen of that polity. But if East India Company was considered a corporate polity, then the different
shareholder groups were conceived as citizens of this polity called East India Company. The Charter
even stated that the Company shall be a body corporate and politick. Furthermore, this corporation
would be an extension of the sovereign which was the state of Britain and the British monarch herself.
The authority of Queen Elizabeth is established in the beginning of the Charter itself as it opens with
the following sentence, Elizabeth, by the grace of God, Queen of England, France and Ireland,
Defender of the faith c. Thomas Smith, Alderman of London was appointed as the first Governor of
the said Company. It is the title of Alderman that suggests, he was a chief noble of

Appalachian Stereotypes
Opposing View Points
The dictionary defines stereotyping as a simplified and standardized conception of image invested
with a special meaning and held in common by members of a group: particularly in social, ethnic, or
age groups. Stereotypes about the Appalachian people are made of its people and culture as a whole.
These people face a number of negative stereotypes. The people of Appalachia are often portrayed as
white, lazy, tobacco smoking, overall wearing, poor farmers (High Mountains Rising). It is because of
these views that people who originate from the Appalachian region are looked down upon by others.
Many students are taught that a better lifestyle, or the possibility of higher education are out of their

The workers who were known to scab were protected by people who were known as gun thugs. Gun
thugs, private mine guards who also had full county deputy privileges, were able to work outside the
walls of their employers. Outside of the mines they worked under Sheriff J.H. Blair. This was a man
who made his allegiance to the business owners clear. The citizens of Harlan lost all faith they may
have had about the impartiality of their law enforcement. In Harlan County during this time there was
no such thing as neutral you were on one side or the other, therefore, if you wasn t a gun thug, you
were a part of the union. The miners began to arm themselves due to the police brutality and attack
from fellow starving jobless miners. There was a lot of anger and blame that was passed around,
therefore, small fights between gun thugs and the publicly employed law enforcement broke out. Also,
scabbing miners were often beaten. The most violent unprovoked attack by mine workers occurred on
May 5, 1931, and became known as the Battle of Evarts, in which three company men and one miner
were killed. By June 17th, the last mine had returned to work (Appalachian Center).
I was raised in Harlan County. I have been to both Bell County and Evarts and coal is still a huge part
of these counties today. My daddy and my papaw and his daddy come from a long line of coal miners.

In the following thesis I choose Hinduism as an example to show how rituals are meaningful, how it relates to the living context of the Indian people, how the Indians enact the Hindu rituals, and so on. India is a country full of mysteries and differences. It has a long history, a profound yet unique culture, with diversified nationalities, races, religions, languages and a huge population. The pursuit of secularism and inveteracy of sectarianism have brought huge influence to the Indian society. As the mainstream culture in India, Hinduism plays an important role in the Indian society and has dominated almost 2000 years of its history. Although in the following years since, the Indian culture gradually becomes a combination of different races, religions and languages, Hinduism still remains to be the key to dig into the development of the culture and society of India. First, the Hindu s worship of the imperishability of gods is the spiritual power for the Indians faith and persistence in overcoming difficulties and obstacles in the long history of development. Catholic monarch Isabella believed that the Indios were naive people who needed to be saved. • 6. Greedlessness In Washington Irving s The Legend Of Sleepy... Washington Irving wrote The Legend of Sleepy Hollow in 1820, which tells the story of Ichabod Crane, a schoolmaster who persistently frightens himself with supernatural beings he supposes he sees and hears on his way home from school. At one point in the story, Crane rivals for the love of a lady with a man named Abraham Van Brunt. This man, known as Brom Bones to the townspeople, took advantage of Ichabod Crane s credulousness to scare him out of town through a prank in which he impersonated the dreaded Headless Horseman, the ghost of Sleepy Hollow. This caused Ichabod to flee town out of terror. Ichabod Crane s characteristics of greed, superstition, and fearfulness ended up causing his downfall. Ichabod Crane s greediness hindered his relationship with the townspeople, consequently making some people, such as Brom Bones, more than happy to expel Crane from the town, and others not sorry when he left. Ichabod had a great gluttonous appetite, so he lived successively a week at a time with his pupils and their families, because they simply could not afford to house such a gourmand. Moreover, he earned the distaste of the other men of the town while trying to earn the affections of a lady named Katrina Van Tassel, whom he hoped to marry only because of her wealth. As students of Nietzsche #960;s philosophy, Loeb and Leopold had set out to commit the #8805;perfect murder #8804; in order to actualize the belief that they were of an elite group, superior to the common man, to whom the standard moral code did not apply. When the boys #960; housekeeper returns from her shopping, Phillip fears that she will discover what has transpired, and the young men exchange particularly telling words which exemplify this idea even further: P: I was sure she #960;d notice it. In other words, Phillip is unintentionally giving voice to society #960;s denunciation of homosexuality and, consequently, to his fear of exposure and the shame it would bring upon him. In terms of this discussion, however, the aspect of the film which carries the strongest Freudian implication is the very fact that the rope, a phallic symbol of sexual frustration, is the actual weapon chosen to commit murder, one of the most violent and explosive acts of aggression. The psychotic scientist, Giacomo Rappaccini, is described as a sickly, elderly man lacking warmth of hearth and wearing black clothing. To what extent do religion and science agree? Can religious and scientific beliefs be conductive or do they pose an obstacle to each other? Although many argue that science and religion don t coincide, I believe that they have many similarities with each other and there large sources of evidence that prove this. One of the largest factors that leads me to believe that religion and science are compatible is the common goal each of them is trying to achieve. Although Science and Religion use different methods, they compliment each other in the sense that without going hand and hand they can not accomplish their end goal which is figuring out the meaning and coming of our existence. This scene is a metaphor for white supremacy, the idea of white people controlling black people in everything that do. Malcolm X explains this concept through the idea of uniting black people: You know why [white people] say Negroes are lazy? Because they want Negroes to be lazy. They always say Negroes can t unite, because they don t want Negroes to unite. And once they put this thing in the Negro s mind, they feel [black people] try to fulfill that image. • 27. The Existence Of Antiheros In Don Draper s The antihero phenomenon in television is one that has proven to spark a successful movement, confirming it has the potential for a large, loyal audience base. Aristotle and philosopher, David Hume, have been proven wrong, stating their belief that the antihero model would never succeed. David Hume claimed these antiheros or in his terms, rough heroes would be unsuccessful because we are displeased to find the limits of vice and virtue so much confounded and we are not able to bear an affection for characters we plainly discover to be blameable. So why do so many serial narratives centered on antiheros exist and why are audiences so attached to these types of characters? Antiheros consists of television s most layered and intricate ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The audience needs to be invested in the emotional fate of that character. A driving factor that is an essential component in creating a successful antihero character is the possibility of redemption. For Walter White, Don Draper, and Tony Soprano the realization of their self deception is the key to the possibility of their redemption: Walter White believes everything he is doing is justified by securing his family s financial future, Don Draper can t admit his stolen identity, and Tony Soprano cannot be honest about the nature of his lifestyle. For each of these characters at a level they understand their self deception but at the same time they can t stand to admit what they ve become. However, the audience hopes one day they will admit what they ve become and they ll redeem themselves. We have hope Walter White and Tony Soprano will eventually get out of their lifestyle. We want Don Draper to admit his identity. Although Dexter is aware of his deception, he still experiences an unease with himself and with the relationships he has with others. There is a slight understanding that Dexter is aware of the wrongfulness in his lifestyle that drives the audience to hope that maybe he ll stop killing one day to protect those that he ... Aristotle, a Greek Philosopher, was born in 384 B.C.E. and was known to show an interest in living things. To find out how plants and animals organs sustained life, he collected and dissected them. He deliberately engaged on studying the reproduction of life to see how each generation and actions of living people spoke, remembered, and learned. Aristotle defined the meaning of psyche as the essence of life. Translated to mean life from the ancient Greek, but also almost shares the same meaning as breath. The word logo means the study of. The famous Greek Philosopher believed that the word psyche escaped from the last dying breath. Today, modern psychologists believe the same thoughts that Aristotle believed long ago, and still study the same thoughts, feelings and actions. Plato, a man who believed by just thinking about it, you could understand and achieve fully, trained Aristotle in philosophy. Aristotle did not agree on Plato s belief, and soon came up with his own. He believed that in order to understand, you must observe what is being studied by looking, listening or touching it. Aristotle s method of studying is now the base of contemporary science. Modern scientists are now engineering more efficient and precise ways of observing. Alternative Fuel, Global Climate Change and the Categorical Imperative While environmental questions are frequently channeled through practical and economic prisms, it is also appropriate to consider our econolgy as a function of morality. The ethical dilemmas which contribute to our policies and our behaviors regarding the use of fossil fuels and our attention to global climate change are frequently overshadowed by more immediate concerns of survival or mere comfort. However, German philosopher Immanuel Kant offers what has become an important if decidedly rigid framework for facing such an ethical dilemma. According to Kant s deontological constructs, delineated in his landmark 1785 work, Groundwork for the Metaphysics of Morals, morality is to treated as a science. In treating this as a science subject to the immutable laws of nature, morality becomes the purview of what Kant calls the categorical imperative. For Kant, questions of morality and ethical decision making are to be settled by an unchanging set of principles shared by all men. To this end, Kant argues that physics will have its empirical part, but it will also have a rational one; and likewise ethics although here the empirical part might be called specifically practical anthropology, while the rational part might properly be called morals. (Kant, 20) From this view, Kant takes the perspective that ethical free will is a danger to civil and social order. Absent the categorical imperative, man is left ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A new platform would be more lethal, more effective, and more reliable than the M4. A major concerned with the M4 is that the M4 is prone to jamming and malfunctioning due to fouling. Fouling is caused by carbon residue build up in the weapon system. In combat situations the M4 has been unreliable, because the weapon misfires. M4 malfunctions include failure to fire, failure to eject, failure to chamber a round, and failure to feed. The Army conduct a dust test in 2007 for testing M4A1 reliability. The Army testers and engineers selected ten M4s and three other weapon systems shot 6000 rounds in the dust chamber. M4 has 683 stoppages and perform the worst against other weapons. In other words, the M4 jammed every 68 rounds (Lowes, 2007). The other selected weapons are the Heckler Koch 416, XM8, and the FN SCAR. (Lowes, 2007). The XM8 jammed every 472 rounds and the HK 416 jammed every 257 rounds. The XM8 has the lowest stoppage rate. If the Army adopted one of these three weapons, it will significantly increases reliabilities in the combat zone. The second issue with the M4A1 is also closely related to malfunction. The M4 is easy to overheat after prolonged firing. There s two factors that cause this problem. The first factor is the high pressure and high velocity round shooting out from the barrel. • 40. Examples Of Emotional Neglect In Young Men Emotional Neglect in Young Men I often hear it in movies and from parents talking to their adolescent son, Be a man. To me, that seems like a way for an annoyed parent to try to control their child and make them strive for maturity. But what do simple sayings like this really do to a boy? By telling him to be that man that he isn t, he thinks that he needs to put on an act, and in turn, his young and childlike emotions are suppressed and not dealt with. Fathers often tell their sons to be a man because of their lack of tolerance towards their (obvious) childish behavior. They think it will make a child mature, but in reality, it puts a mask over that child. It is detrimental to boys to teach them to hide their feelings. Duffy clearly portrays a sinister and lonely persona in both poems. In Stealing the persona is presented as lonely and isolated from society so they resort to stealing just for the pleasure of doing it. Similarly, in Education for leisure , an egotistical young adult is portrayed who is killing living things to undo his intense isolation. While the character was kicking the snowman furiously again, again . His breath ripped out in rags . He had lost his breath because he was so passionate about his fury that he forgot about his physical ability. In this quote a metaphor is used and two short sentences are repeated. The short sentences emphasize his lack of education, showing that he cannot form complex intellectual sentences. The fact that the word is repeated twice indicates his passion for what he s doing. The metaphor is also an example of hyperbole as it over exaggerates on how exhausted he is due to his inability to control his emotions. This suggests that the persona is angry and frustrated at his life. The snowman could symbolize what he doesn t have; therefore, portraying his rage towards the snowman. The snowman could also be symbolized as himself, which shows his self destructive behavior as he tries to punish the part of himself that he sees in the inanimate object. In the other poem, the character does something similar as he squishes a fly against the window using his thumb . This shows how the persona releases all his irritation on a vulnerable creature that cannot do anything to escape from the situation. This suggests that he loves the feeling of over empowerment but it also suggests that he is a coward as he displays his rage on a susceptible and tiny creature. It also portrays how cruel and disheartened of a person he is as the fly didn t have anything to do with why he was left out and isolated all along his life. Despite of this fact, he still went forward with killing the poor fly because of his failure to control his rage. It is mentioned that he commits this purposeless murder with his thumb . In spite of the tremendous hardships in America during this decade, it also became a time of great music that is still remembered today. Jazz music was highly popular in this time, and Billie Holiday was a famous jazz performer. She stood out from many other musicians because of her intense and passionate performances. Jazz arose from unacceptable segments of society, but quickly grew like wildfire. We often think of the 1930 s as the decade that jazz became civilized, and famous throughout popular culture through the work of pioneering artists like Billie Holiday. People did not own televisions or cable, so radio was their main source of entertainment, and music during this decade was both up beat and a source of relaxation. Strange Fruit defied musical category because it was considered too artsy to be folk, and too explicitly political to fit into jazz. This is why Strange Fruit became such a powerful phenomenon. Many other artists later took on this song, changing the genre but still portraying the same message. Nina Simone dramatized Strange Fruit in the context of the Civil Rights Movement.
