Uncertainty Reduction Theory “the Vow” and “Meet the
Parents”
Uncertainty Reduction Theory
The Vow and Meet the Parents
Uncertainty reduction theory is the point of view that uncertainty motivates communication and
that certainty reduces the motivation to communicate (Wood, definition). This theory was first
developed by Charles Berger. He believed that when people are to meet for the first time they have
a high level of uncertainty and the only way for them to reduce it is to communicate with one
another. They don t know what each other likes, thinks and believes; how each other responds to
certain reactions, and they re unsure what each other expects or wants from interacting (Wood,184).
There are three prior conditions that are meant to help individuals want to reduce uncertainty. ...

Although their situation makes the reduction of uncertainty a lot more difficult because for
Channing he remembers all the stuff they once did together, but Rachel cannot seem to place any
remembrance on what they were like. She keeps remembering who she used to be before she met
him, which was a completely different person. This causes him to get very frustrated with her, and
this in turn puts a strain on them continuing of the reduction of uncertainty. There is a scene in the
film where Channing takes Rachel out on a date and he brings her to all the places that they shared
special moments at; where they first met, first date, and a ritual they would always do once a
month. During this date the couple was able to talk and began to restart their relationship. I was
able to see that from their communication it began to break the barrier between the couple, and
allowed them to start to grow some feelings towards one another again. Where as in the film Meet
the Parents the verbal communication between the father and the possible son in law they both do
not know each other so everything is completely new about one another. I found that verbal
communication actually decreased the chance of reducing the uncertainty between the two. For
example the more they talked and learned about one another the more the conversation started to
change because it helped them realize that they

Discrimination In The Workplace Essay
Discrimination is a topic that has been around for a very long time. Most people today do not
realize how discrimination affects everyone around them and might even happen to them from time
to time. Discrimination means treating a person unfairly because of who they are or because they
possess certain characteristics such as age, gender, race, disability, religion, pregnancy and
maternity, sexual orientation, gender reassignment, and marriage and civil partnership (EOC 2017).
There are many types of discrimination, but we will focus solely on discrimination in the workplace
for this paper. Stephen and Timothy (2017) gives different forms of discrimination within the work

According to Dessler 2017 Title VII established the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission
to administer and enforce the Civil Rights Act at work. The laws that they enforce are as
followed; Equal Pay Act of 1963, Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967, Vocational
Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Pregnancy Discrimination Act of 1978, Federal Agency Guidelines,
Civil Rights Act of 1991, Americans with Disability Act, and State and Local Equal Opportunity
Laws. Dessler 2017 went into depth about each of these laws and there definitions that are about
to be discussed. Equal Pay Act of 1963 states that it is unlawful to discriminate in pay on the basis
of sex when jobs involve equal work; require equivalent skills, effort, and responsibility; and are
performed under similar working conditions. Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 made
it unlawful to discriminate against employees or applicants who are between 40 and 65 years of
age. The Vocational Rehabilitation Act of 1973 requires employers with federal contracts of more
than $2,500 to take affirmative action in employing handicapped persons. Pregnancy
Discrimination Act of 1978 prohibits using pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions to
discriminate in hiring, promotion, suspension, or discharge, or in any term or condition of
employment. Furthermore, under the act, if an employer offers its employees disability coverage,

28 November 2017 Title of Your Report
Author Background
According to Franklin Walker, the well known American author of such beloved titles as The
Call of the Wild, White Fang, and The Sea Wolf, was born on January 12, 1876 in San Francisco,
California. He spent much of his childhood on ranches and the streets of Oakland, as well as
sailing on San Francisco Bay. During his teenage years, London fell into strange and unfulfilling
jobs that led to a personal revelation about the importance of an education. London spent a few
months educating himself on both high school and college material, but when word of
discovered gold in the Klondike spread, London, at the age of twenty one, left his home to
participate in the hunt for treasure. He published a short story collection called The Son of the
Wolf in 1900 and three years later his novel The Call of the Wild awarded him new fame and
notoriety. After a successful career as a writer, London died in 1916 at the age of forty (Walker 1).
Synopsis
The Sea Wolf follows the adventure of Humphrey Van Weyden, a literary critic and essay writer
who has never known any real hardship or physical challenge. At the start of the novel, Van
Weyden boards a boat called The Martinez, wholly unaware that it is about to sink. As the vessel is
pulled beneath the waves, Van Weyden jumps overboard and struggles in the freezingwater.
Fortunately, he is rescued by the passing vessel The Ghost

Dental Hygienist Personal Statement
After taking care of my children and teaching them for more than 12 years as well as earning my
GED in October 2013, I finally had the chance to go to college for the first time in my life at the
young age of 40. Besides being a first generation immigrant, I also became the first of my father s
ten children to attend collegewhen I registered as a student at Wayne County Community College

The Importance Of The Conversion Of Lower Energy Light
Upconversion is a term that characterizes the conversion of lower energy light, particularly in the
near infrared region, into higher energy light within the visible spectrum. This occurs through a
process in which the sequential absorption of multi photon near infrared light yields the emission of
lightthat is of shorter wavelength[1]. This process is represented in Figure 1, which shows the
emissions of light within the visible spectrumafter excitation of various dopant ions by near
infrared light[1]. The upconversion effect has been observed primarily in the rare earth metals of
the lanthanides as well as yttrium, and scandium; however, some transition metals and actinides can
also display this effect[2]. Lanthanide ions display special inner shell arrangements of 4fn 5d0 1,
which allow for unique energy levels and provide shielding from the outer shells[2]. Due to their
various f orbital configurations, lanthanide ions are able to display very sharp luminescence
emissions via intra 4f or 4f 4d transitions[2,3]. The importance of the lanthanide ions is evident in
several applications including applications in lasers, bioprobe applications, optical imaging, and
photodynamic therapy [2,3]. This is due to their fluorescent properties, which include: resistance to
photobleaching, monochromaticity, large Stokes shifts, narrow bandwidth, and long emission
lifetime[2,3]. The direct excitation of the lanthanide ions is not very effective because they are
limited by low

Theme Of Stanhope In Journey s End
In Journey s End , one of the main characters who plays the main role in creating the plot, climax
and other parts of the play is Stanhope. Sherriff adds several techniques to the play which constructs
Stanhope s character much more captivating, enchanting and sophisticating.
Sherriff sets the scene with a trench dugout with the conversation between Osbourne and Hardy
discussing about Stanhope s behaviour. This encounters how we visualise Stanhope, whom we
haven t even met. He seems to be a guy whom Osbourne admired as a long way the best company
commander we ve got yet juxtaposed to the point made by Hardy as a sort of freak and drinking

This demonstrates the true supremacy qualities which even with Raleigh, his girlfriend s brother,
as a commander of the company, he would still do his job rightfully like when Raleigh outlined
Stanhope as hero worships like a man worthy of admiration. The domination of both Hibbert and
Raleigh here bring forth a sense of strictness and steadfast loyalty he has towards his career.
Furthermore, during the outrage for Raleigh s letter, the playwright uses the stage direction
trembling to imply how solemn Stanhope perceives in the strain of leadership that necessitate to be
free of unfairness rather than based on personal and private relationships.
In conclusion, multiples techniques have been used to characterise Stanhope in such a compelling
character. Techniques like stage direction, emotive language, juxtaposition, and the dialogue
between soldiers of Stanhope s company has differentiate him from others. To summarise, Sherriff
granted Stanhope with a strong sensation of initiative, allegiance, and worship qualities that will

The Roles of Women in Medieval Scandinavia Essay
When people think about Medieval Scandinavia they usually think about a cold northern region
inhabited by a warrior people who spend all of their time sailing around in Viking warships and
plundering from one another or going to war with their neighbors. While our archaeological
evidence from this period may be rather scarce, many cite the Scandinavian pagan religions as a
evidence of this warrior society due to the fact that men were encouraged to fight in order to be
chosen by the gods to live in Valhalla, the pagan equivalent, loosely equivalent, of heaven.
However, this only accounts for the men of the society, and no society can continue if it consists
only of men. Were the women as concerned with war as their male comrades? Recent... Show more

Norse pagan lore is rife with female characters that challenge their male counterparts and take
tasks upon themselves rather than simply leaving them to men, in some cases of pagan myth, the
female characters even participate in battles. Scandinavian society itself also contributed to
allotment of power into female hands. Due to societal expectations, in order to advance in
society the Scandinavian man was required to find a wife and produce offspring; however, due to
the overall scarcity of women only a small number of men could achieve this and the rest were
forced to look elsewhere for brides, these men were the Vikings who raided other lands and
countries not merely to find wealth but also to find themselves wives. All of this evidence
culminates in the fact that women in Scandinavia held a very different position than was previously
believed and one such woman who is an exceptional example of the utilization of this power is
Margaret I, Queen of Norway, Denmark, and Sweden. For these reasons we are lead to believe
that there existed an expected realm of responsibility for both men and women throughout medieval
Scandinavian society; however it also seems to have been expected that some women would go
beyond these social limitations in order to take power and occasionally even participate in battle,

Business Communication Is Different in Pakistan Compared...
Business Communication is different in Pakistan compared to western countries
Communication is any behaviour, verbal or nonverbal, that is perceived by another. (Dwyer 2006)
business communications are purposive interchanges of ideas, opinions, information, instructions
and the like, presented personally or impersonally by symbol or signal as to attain the goods of
organization. (Rosenblatt, Cheatham Watt 1992) Today, the organization is growing more complex
and the business is growing larger, because of this, the communication is necessary for passing
information between people working in the same organization, it provides the critical link between
core functions. As Robert Kent, former dean of Harvard Business School has said, In ... Show more

Take an example of university culture in both countries. FAST s students call their professors with
Sir/ Mam /Professor while University of Arkansas s students call their professors simply with their
last names. This was a simple example depicting difference in university culture and relation of
business communication with organization s culture and country s system.
пѓ Direction of communication in most of the organizations in Pakistan ( especially public sector)
is mostly downwards, the mechanism of feedback and innovation of new ideas is restricted to only
few organizations. While in USA the direction of communication is mostly both ways. For example
different surveys, feedback tests and reports are conducted in business organizations monthly
/annually.
пѓ In oral communication, both Pakistan and USA have informal rumours and one to one
discussions. But group discussions are more common and preferred in west.
пѓ Written communication has greatly been revolutionized by the advancement in technology
computerization. The public sector organizations in Pakistan are still working in old paper work
style, while some of the organizations have computerised there business environments for
communication. While western countries are far ahead in using technology for business

AN ENHANCED GRAPHICAL PASSWORD SCHEME USING AONV

Conventional textual password has been in use for authentication for a long time due to its ease of
use. However, drawbacks such as weak or stolen passwords and unrecalled passwords, has
frequently compromised security. Consequently, graphical passwordtechnique has been proposed
from literatures as a solution. However, this technique still faced with the challenge of peep attacks,
tradeoff between easy use (minima cognitive requirement) and secured strength (moderate
complexity) issues. This research presented a graphic based password scheme using Arithmetic
Operators and Numerical Value (AONV) in which the aforementioned issues are addressed. The
AONV model consists of registration and verification stages which users must successfully
complete in order to be authenticated. A hybrid technique based on recognition, cued and pure
recall was adopted. The system security was enhanced by image matching, numerical value,
computational numeric secret key, arithmetic operator and shuffling of images in grid cells. This

Afternoons by Philip Larkin Essays
Afternoons by Philip Larkin.
A poem which reflects on the subject of marriage is Afternoons by
Philip Larkin. The poem deals with Larkin s view on young mothers watching their kids playing in
a playground and on this he concludes that marrying young and having children young, lead to the
mothers losing their identity and destiny. The techniques used by the poet such as theme, imagery
and tone deepened my understanding of the issue. The structure of the poem is simple; there are
three stanzas with eight lines in each. However, unlike every other poem by Larkin this layout has
no direct meaning. The lines are unrhymed. The first stanza deals with Larkin s rather cynical view
of marriage and deals with the idea that the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By using the idea of wind in the poem, Larkin is able to add his own personal views. The wind
acts as an idea of change. This is continued moreover in the third stanza via the use of enjambement.
This enables
Larkin to carry on and develop his point.
Larkin s use of imagery is very effective. The courting places which were once used by the young
mothers are changing but so are their children. The courting places are still being used, however,
the people of whom should be using them now have the burden of children and can no longer have
the fun this place entails. The unripe acorns as described by Larkin, are the children who are still
in school .
This implies Larkin, as an outsider observing and looking in, believes that as generations pass
romance is lost further and that people have children far to young. The children within the school
are not mature enough to realise what courting means. A grim humour is assumed when the reader
realises these children still have a future wereas the young mothers do not.The tone of the poem has
become increasingly more cynical. Larkin refers to how regimented the mothers lives are again
when they are expected to pick up their children from school. The women have changed immensely
with the pressures and responsibilities that the child has brought, they are putting on weight and
losing their looks, probably due to having the children. Their beauty has thickened .

Milk s Story Told Right
The 2008 film Milk is based on a true story about a political leader who desired to see a change in
America, specifically the freedom of choice and speech towards homosexuals. The motion picture
takes place after Harvey Milk s 40th birthday and captures the rest of his life as he strives to
convince America to let the gay community out of the closet. The movie portrays the historical
activist very well, including the surrounding characters as well as the actual events that took place
during his time in office. The film was very accurate in representing Harvey Milk correctly. In the
movie, Milk was depicted as a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Josh Brolin, the actor who played White, embodied the character in a way that the audience could
understand. During the film, the audience can see that Harvey Milk and George Moscone
developed a political relationship. Shortly after Dan White resigned his seat from the Board of
Supervisors, Milk convinced Mayor Moscone that he would have a greater chance at being
reelected mayor without White on the Board. Mayor George Moscone trusted Milk in this political
judgment call. When the climactic scene of the two assassinations comes, the film depicts it
accurately. After entering San Francisco s City Hall from another entrance to elude the metal
detectors, White went to Moscone s office to plead for his reemployment. When Moscone denied
him the occupation, White shot and killed him. Later in the same hour, White went to Milk s office
and killed him as well. The film certainly displayed this scene accurately.
Actor Sean Penn also delivered an outstanding performance playing the main character Harvey
Milk. From the beginning to the end, Penn gave a believable presentation. In the film, Milk starts
a camera business which then becomes a salon for homosexuals. While noticing that his
surroundings are less than approving of the gay community, Milk decides to be a voice for those
who are, metaphorically speaking, trapped behind closet doors. In 1977, Milk was elected to the
San Francisco Board of Supervisors. Being in a place of power, Milk used this

Sherman Alexie Flight Patterns
The story Flight Patterns by Sherman Alexie features a Native American of the Spokane Indian
Tribe that faces troubles with post 9/11 attacks. Alexie concentrates his story with remarks
expressing the emotional feelings of the American view of people with a medium to dark
complexion. Alexie brings contrast between two worlds. William, the main character, demonstrates
the American view of people who are perceived as a terrorist. Then, Fedaku, William s taxi
driver, whom demonstrates the view of a foreigner with a different life. Neither one of these men

Every time William is at the airport, he scans for little brown guys who reeked of
fundamentalism (Alexie 270). White Americans always gave William dirty looks, yet he was
no different. Because William is of Indian descent, he often gets characterized as a terrorist, but
he also characterized a lot of other people that looked the same way as him. The whole world
relies on mass media because it is today s way of retrieving information about the world. The
media can either make you or break you. In this case, the media made all people of color look
like terrorists blaming them for actions of others. Muslims are blamed for 9/11, and even
though William is not a Muslim, he is stereotyped as a terrorist because of his physical features.
For example the invisibility of Native Americans in mass media provides a unique vantage point
for examining how media representations impact both identity and self understanding (Leavitt)
which means whenever you do see a Native American on media, they are most likely shown as
19th or 18th century figures. Or they are stereotyped as poor, uneducated, and prone to
addictions (Leavitt) but in this case William is the exact opposite, yet he still gets stereotyped as
a different race because he does not meet the requirements for his own race. Not only is William
stereotyped but so is Fekadu, William s taxi driver. Fekadu is a Muslim Oramo member from
Ethiopia, yet people think [he is] black, they don t see [him] as a terrorist, only as a crack head
addict on welfare. Once again we are seeing someone being misjudged by their physical
appearance even though they are nowhere near the misinterpretations. Whichever type of media
you look at, the majority, if not all of them are unfavorable when it comes to the portraying of
racial/ethnic groups. These groups are always stereotyped and based on the racist actions done

Paradise Lost Predestination Essay
Predestination in Book III of Paradise Lost
Milton s purpose in Paradise Lost is nothing less than to assert eternal providence and justify the
ways of God to men a most daunting task. For Milton to succeed in his endeavour, he has to
unravel a number of theologiccal thorns that have troubled christian philosophers for centuries.
Since his epic poem is, essentially, a twelve book argument building to a logical conclusion the
justification of the ways of God to men he will necessarily have to deal with these dogmatic
problems, and, in doing so, reveal his own take on the Christian theology.
What we receive in Paradise Lost, however, is Milton s final conclusion concerning these issues; to

But what is implied by Milton s usage of the word?
God s defence in Book III can be broken into four parts:
1 Man was created free, ie. I made him just and right/Sufficient to have stood, though free to fall .
This is covered in lines 97 111;
2 It is through free will that man chose to fall, ie. ...they themselves decreed/Thir own revolt, not I
. This is covered in lines 111 119;
3 Though fallen, man shall not lose their free will, ie. I form d them free, and free they must
remain ; the notion of the non mutability of God is also contained here. This is covered in lines
120 128;
4 Using free will, and through God, man shall be saved, ie. Man therefore shall find grace [...] in
Mercy and Justice both . This is covered in lines 129 134, and thus constitutes the final part of God
s full argument and defence.
Central to the argument, though, both structurally and in terms importance, is the notion of
predestination. The other aspects of the argument man s free will, and the means by which they
shall be saved are contained within that single word, for behind it lies the entirety of the argument
that Milton lays out in Chapter IV of De Doctrina Christiana.

The Importance Of A Career Assessment Test
I graduated from college and now what? There is nothing more stressful and frustrating than
completing school and not knowing what to do next. Often, college graduates find themselves
in a predicament where they are dissatisfied with their current job in their field of study and do
not know what to do. A career assessment test can serve as a guide for those in need of a career
path, direction or suggestion. The purpose of a career assessment test is to suggest careers one
might be well suited for. There are different assessment tools available online; some are available
for a fee, while some are free. I was reluctant at first to take the tests because I do not believe a
test can tell me what career or job I am well suited for. Furthermore, the assessments are
extremely opinionated. The results are based on information you provide. We may think we are
soft and sensitive, but that may necessarily be the case. When taking a career assessment test
administered by careercolleges.com, I came across the following question: When making
decisions do you try to remain objective and consider the facts or do you allow your feelings
and the effect of the decision of others to influence your decision? I always thought I was a very

Main Themes Of Dissatisfaction In The Mayor Of Casterbridge
The Mayor of Casterbridge has two main themes. One theme is dissatisfaction, which is a main
reason when the characters end relationships with each other. The other theme is the indelibility of
the past. Some characters had long term effects when their past was learned by other characters.
People were not forgiven for their past as easy in the early nineteenth as they are today. The author
used these themes very well, for people to assert into their life.
Dissatisfaction is very major in The Mayor of Casterbridge because many relationships are broken
and mended in the book. Those characters are dissatisfied with their current state of being, so they
move on to a different stage in their life, which can lead to other relationships being repaired. The
author is teaching the readers to move on, if something in their life is dissatisfying them.
One example of a character being dissatisfied is when Newson fakes his death because he knows
Susan is not satisfied and wants to go back to Michael Henchard. Susan found out that she didn t
have to stay with Newson, so she wanted to go back to Henchard. Susan became unpleasant to
be around, and Newson knew she wanted to go back to Henchard. On page 288, in The Mayor
of Casterbridge, Newson says Since I m here, here I ll bide, I thought to myself; twill be most
kindness to her, now she s taken against me, to let her believe me lost; for, I thought while she
supposes us both alive she ll be miserable; but if she thinks me dead she ll go back to him, and
the child will have a home. Newson faked his death to satisfy Susan and bring happiness in her life.
When Lucetta met Farfrae, she became dissatisfied with Henchard. To Lucetta, Farfrae was a
younger and better version of Henchard. Lucetta was going to marry Henchard, but she knew that
she should would not be happy with him. Lucetta also found out about Henchard s past, and she
was dissatisfied with the way he treated his first wife. On page 209, Lucetta says I learnt of the
rumor that you had вЋЇ sold your first wife at a fair, like a horse or cow. How could I keep my
promise after hearing that? Lucetta knew she was not going to be satisfied with Henchard if she
married him, so she moved on with her life.

Gurglespla
The classroom has always been a place for learning and taking on new challenges. Normally, the
discovery has some kind of connection to the class one is taking, however recently 11 out of 10
students have reported a new kind of discovery: a musical one. Students have found a way to
exercise their right of freedom of speech through performing musical numbers during class.
Although only a select few are confident enough to perform in front of such an audience, if a student
starts playing, the teacher will automatically stop the class so that the rest of the students can focus
on what is truly important. The new genre is called gurglespla and the number of followers are
growing by the thousands per minute. The musical stylings of gurglespla... Show more content on

Surprisingly, it was not always well liked. Prior to the last couple of months, Gurglespla was seen
as annoying and disruptive by students and teachers alike. But then something changed within the
class s hearts, they realized the once annoying noises turned to beautiful enchanting music and that
the disruptive nature was simply an outlet for the student to express themselves. It is not the first
time something that once was unfavorable became likeable. Another instance is the recent fad of
food blues, where artist record themselves eating and drinking as rhythmic talent. One recent one
hit wonder Sammy Sam did not even recognize that he possessed such talent but that one day [he]
was simply extremely thirsty and was sipping water in class and one of his classmates asked him
what s the name of his album. He was otherwise oblivious to the genre and said he did not have

to pull out his phone and record Sammy s drinking

Allegory Of The Cave Vs Plato s Cave
By writing The Allegory of the Cave or Plato s Cave, Plato tries to convey to people that they
must escape the world of illusions and shadows and look at it with other eyes because that is the
only way that they can find the true view of the world. In other words what I mean by other eyes
is that people should see not only what is presented to them but see what is the real message
hidden behind the illusion. People should think outside the box in order to break away from the
delusions and discover the reality. Plato s allegory tells us about people s way of thinking about
the world. In the essay I will explain why not everyone wants to open his or her eyes, how people
are misguided by illusions, and why sometimes it is hard it is to see the reality. To begin with,
we as a people have the ability to see but not everyone actually sees things, and often we believe
in what is presented to us blindly. In the The Allegory of the Cave or Plato s Cave is written that
the power to learn is presented in everyone s soul and that the instrument with which each learns is
like eye that cannot be turned around from darkness to light without turning the whole body. By
that he means that everybody has the ability to learn things but not everybody wants to see learn
them. In other words, the power to learn is ability that everybody has but not everyone uses it
properly. Plato s allegory reveals that education is the craft concerned with doing this very thing,
this turning around, and which

Finding My Role In Shaping My Personal Identity
This particular assignment has been very tough for me. I don t believe that the neighborhoods
in which I grew up had a certain importance in shaping my political identity. However, the
countries in which I have resided have helped me find my own personal identity, and with it; my
political one. Several times I have been asked where am I from, and while I want to say that I m
from Nicaragua, there s always something that stops me. It s not lack of pride of my hometown,
but it s because it doesn t seem fair to the other countries that have played their part in raising me

MARKETING PLAN:
Most are doers and not planners . If we want to do the right marketing activities in the right way we
must start with a marketing plan. For that, marketing planning must be continuously undertaken to
see any shifting market conditions, changing customer needs, competitive threats as well as
potential opportunities.

Consists of the following 4 elements (Ps ):
Product Price Place (distribution) Promotion
These 4 Ps are the parameters that the marketing managers can control, subject to the internal and

Physical Therapy Is The Health Profession
Physical therapy is the health profession that provides treatment and management of physical
disability, malfunction, or pain via various modalities, and without the use of medicines, surgery, or
radiation [1]. An individual who practices physical therapy is known as a physical therapist.
Physical therapists are experts of the musculoskeletal and neuromuscular systems, and they evaluate
and treat patients for issues that involve those systems [2]. The role of a physical therapist is to
evaluate patients, and to provide treatment to patients that focus primarily on movement. This
includes, but is not limited to, restoration of movement as well as improving movement, reducing
pain levels, returning function that may have been lost, and improving function.[2] The most
predominant clinical setting where physical therapists... provide care include hospitals, outpatient
clinics, private practices, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, home health, school systems,
and sport centers [2]. Typically, to receive access to the services provided by a physical therapist,
a patient has to be referred to a physical therapist by a physician. [2] Therefore, physical therapyis
usually a secondary health care. The profession of physical therapysounds fantastic, because it is.
However, the art of physical therapy wasn t just born a perfect creature; it took some time to
develop as a great profession.

Chapter 2: Generating and Protecting Business Ideas
Case Study What a Spectacle!
(p13 p22)
1. A Franchise is when a franchisor of a business gives the franchisee of another business the right
to supply its product or service under the same brand identity. Specsavers is a very successful
franchise for example.
2. Apart from franchising, two sources of business ideas are identifying a market niche which
involves noticing that something is missing from the market or that can be improved on. Also
spotting trends and anticipating their impact which involves creating or develop a product or
service to suit patterns or trends in the market.

However, opening a Boots franchise is a high risk as the original Boots was obviously not
making enough money to survive and Halpin is opening under the same business name so the
chances of gaining a reasonably high profit from selling the same products and services is
unlikely. Glasses Direct was at a high risk as Murray Wells is only 22 and still at university and so
he started the business through his ВЈ1000 student loan. This means that he has to earn enough to
gain a profit allowing the business to survive as well as paying off his student loan. Finally,
Glasses Direct is an online store and so Murray doesn t have to pay rent or electric bills meaning
that overall he had lower outflows than Halpin because Halpin has to pay rent and electricity bills.
6. The web based, Glasses Direct business may have more potential to grow than a Boots
franchise as Halpin can make his own decisions about the business allowing further growth. Also
selling online means that he can sell his products globally but the cost of delivery and advertising
will increase. Furthermore, Murray has the choice to add new suppliers to sell a different range of
products unlike boots because in the franchise agreement all Boots stores have to sell the same
products. Also, Glasses Direct sell much

Descriptive Essay On A Fall Day
Today, the weather was very humid and warm outside for mid October. It was a comfortable
temperature outside, so I decided to take my fall jacket off because I did not want to be too hot
as I was walking around the market. I m estimating that it was approximately mid to low 20 s in
temperature today, so whenever a breeze arose, it was refreshing because it was pretty warm
outside. I decided that today I would take a walk through the dessert sections of the market
before going to sit by the outdoor firepit. There were many vendors selling fudge and pastries, so
this was something I purchased because I was heading home that afternoon and I thought my
family would enjoy these treats. The firepit was not turned on today because it was fairly warm
outside, but I still decided to sit in one of the Adirondack chairs surrounding the firepit to take in
everything that was happening around me. It was very busy at the market around this time
because it was the weekend, and everybody was taking the opportunity to spend time with their
families outside on the warm fall day. I also noticed an older man performing a compilation of
folk songs on the guitar, and a small group of people huddled around the area listening to him
perform. I started to become restless after sitting in the chair for about ten minutes, so I decided to
continue walking to one of the buildings at the farmer s market. Throughout my childhood, my
parents would usually take me and my sisters to St. Jacobs Farmers

The Council On Tall Buildings And Urban Habitat
When driving into a city the horizon is always very awe dropping, highlighted by the various
high rises and skyscrapers that outline the city. The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban
Habitat (CTBUH) defines a high rise building as a building whose height of over 75 feet creates
different conditions in the design, construction, and use than those that exist in common
buildings of a certain region and period (CTBUH). High rise buildings exist in our civilization,
mostly in our large cities, to save space and money. In large urban areas, cost of construction is
87% cheaper to build up than it is to build outward (NFPA). In urban areas, land space is limited
and very valuable. Skyscrapers can house different purposes consisting of; office space, apartment
living, and even entertainment purposes. These types of buildings present several unique
challenges not found in traditional low rise buildings; longer egress times and distance, evacuation
strategies, fire department accessibility, smoke movement and fire control. Dr. W. Z. Black is a
member of the American Society of Fire Safety and Engineers; He stated, During an emergency, the
multiple floors of a high rise buildingrequire great numbers of persons to travel great vertical
distances on stairs in order to evacuate the building (Black). Based on the numerous issues and
concerns found within high rise buildings, it is evident that fire safety is a major problem.

Effective Communication For The Workplace
Someone once said great communication is a skill that is needed in life. I believe great
communication can take an individual very far in life. Effective communication helps connect with
people. It can open many doors for many jobs. It lets the employer know whom they have hired, and
how intelligent the person really is. In the business profession, effective communicationenables
managers to give understandable instructions to their employees. Effective communication will
help state what is expected from workers. I believe effective communication can be used in all
aspects of the workplace.
First, Susan Adams from Forbes wrote Good grammar is important in life. Using correct
grammar in the workplace shows the intelligence of the worker. It also shows how well thoughts
are put together before speaking. Using good grammar can also show employers that an
employee can accomplish other tasks on the job no matter what it is. For example the employee
can be asked to give a formal speech because the employer trusts that the employee will use the
right language when talking. Good grammar also shows the company that the employee cares
about his personal image, the company image, and that s what makes the company stand out from
other companies. Good grammar shows who the person is, for example what type of
establishment have they grown up around. It also shows what type of people the company hires

What Are Coral Reefs?
Livescience.com states that:
Coral reefs are expansive underwater structures which are built from stony corals that secrete
calcium carbonate to create their hard exoskeleton to protect their soft bodies. These corals consist
of polyps which are abnormal growths within the coral that cluster together to form groups. Coral
reefs make up one of the most significant marine ecosystems in the world today. (https:/

Why Are Coral Reefs Important?
Alongside being one of the largest marine ecosystems in the world, coral reefs are significant for
many reasons, most of which fall under protection. But what do they protect and how do they
protect it?
Coral reefs provide coastal protection as they stop and lower wave action and erosion in shallow
shores which prevents damage to any nearby properties
Coral reefs protect the productive wetlands that lie along the coast as well as the highly productive
wetlands that are around ports and harbours
Human recreation such as fishing, snorkelling and scuba diving are all provided by the coral reefs.
The human recreation that is provided by the coral reefs benefit the people who work in the tourism

Science And Its Effect On Society Essay
Science is the process which discovers knowledge, knowledge in turn is power, and power is said
to bring about corruption. Therefore, through the transitive property, that implies that science will
only lead to corruption. Not necessarily a corruption of one s actions; for instance, science won t
make a politician accept a bribe. However, some would argue that sciencewill lead to a degradation
of morals. For example, contemporary science may lead to a woman viewing her unborn baby as
naught but a ball of cells, similar to a tumor, which can be removed from her body with no moral
dilemma. The converse to this is the impediment of science due to humanity clinging to its archaic
values. This can be shown by the opposition to stem cell research and genetically modified
embryos in the name of morals and the inviolability of life. The stark contrast between following
morals and advancing science creates a juxtaposition that often manifests itself as a debate between
religionand science. Certain members of both the scientific and religious communities blindly
adhere to their own opinions and ideals. This butting of heads helps no one. As a result, a middle
road must be found, one in which neither progress nor moralityare ignored. The polarity between
these two forces is encapsulated by the differences that Bertolt Brecht draws in his play Galileo
between Galileo and the clergymen. This play, when contrasted with the reality of Galileo s
studies, provides a vehicle to discuss the

The Implications Of Oil Trade
Even the important contribution of Chapter 2, the proposed analysis requires a deeper study to
understand the implications related to oil trade and how the expected oil production will be
consumed by the demand. Considering only Canada for all the expected oil production from the
Western provinces doesn t seem enough. To achieve the forecasted production levels, producers of
Western Canadian oil must find a market that values their oil at reasonable price. Without access to
seaports, Alberta and Saskatchewan need to develop their transportation capacity to export this
expected production. The challenge related to the increasing availability of Western Canadian oil
and its distribution to domestic and international markets is imminent. Indeed, uncertainty in oil
reserves and production implies uncertainty on future trade movements, and consequently, on oil
corridors. It is now becoming a political, economic and national security matter that this oil finds
access to other markets and export opportunities (McKenna, 2013). As for their actual markets,
maintenance on existing pipelines and the necessity of upgrading refineries to process this crude oil
from Western Canada create bottlenecks upstream that increase the constraints to allow the
expected growth. All these challenges have economic implications that translate in a price
differential. The oil production surplus and the inability to reach external markets already have
negative effects on oil prices for Western Canadian

Transitions Of Reptiles To Mammals Essay

Primitive therapsids are present as fossils in certain Middle Permian deposits; later forms are
known from every continent except Australia but are most common in the Late Permian and Early
Triassic of South Africa. nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; The several features that separate modern
reptiles from modern mammals doubtlessly evolved at different rates. Many attributes of mammals
are correlated with their highly active lifestyle; for example, efficient double circulation of blood
with a completely four chambered heart, anucleate and biconcave erythrocytes (blood cells), the
diaphragm, and the secondary palate (which separates passages of food and air and allows
breathing during mastication (chewing) or suckling). Hair for insulation correlates with
endothermy (being warm blooded), the physiological maintenance of individual temperature
independent of the environmental temperature, and endothermy allows high levels of sustained
activity. the unique characteristics of mammals thus would seem to have evolved as a complex

Ipsilateral Knee Injury Essay
1.1 Background
Concomitant knee injuries and knee pain associated with lower limb fractures often stay
undetected, or are inadequately addressed in fracture treatment plans, which then attributes to poor
treatment outcomes. [1,2,3] The treatment of choice for tibial shaft fractures is intramedullary (IM)
nailing.[4] After placing an IM nail during surgery, the ROM of the ipsilateral kneejoint can be
compromised due to pain, undetected ligamental, meniscal injuries, or the positioning of the IM
tibial nail itself. [2,5,6,7] Although knee pain has been announced the most frequent complication
of IM nailing, often times these instabilities are overlooked during emergency surgical care and
remain unaddressed in post surgical management. [3,8] Long term follow up studies on anterior
knee pain described incidental rates between 10 and 83 percent among patients. [1,5,9,10] It has
also been stated that the high incidence of knee pain after IM nailing is of multifactorial
origin.[1,8,11] ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These mechanisms can lead to ligamentous injuries in the ipsilateral knee, such as impairment to
the cruciate ligaments or the lateral and medial collateral ligament. These injuries are very common
in cases of open and closed lower limp fractures. [2,3,6,9] Furthermore, the presence of a nail and
/or its protrusion thru the tibial plateau has been recognized as a significant cause of anterior knee
pain. [10,11,12]
We are investigating, whether concomitant ligamental knee injuries generally stay undetected upon
admission, or develop through surgical intervention and treatment plans. For that reason, we try to
correlate ligamentous integrity, range of motion and IM nail size to possible knee injuries and

White House React To Women s March With Silence Analysis
The article of the week White House reacts to Women s March With Silence was basically about
how Donald Trump is ignoring all the protests right outside the White House. The article was week
was interesting, because of the way reacted to the protests. There were hundreds of thousand of
people protesting for Women s March all over the country. What I learned from the article is how
hundreds of thousands of people protested against Donald Trump. It surprises me that Trump barely

Which means he obviously saw them. Then, Trump s Press Secretary Sean Spicer planned to
make a statement. All Spicer did was scold reporters, and he did not answer any protest question. I

president to president elect. Donald Trump s inauguration was on January 20th 2017. Supreme
Court Chief Justice John Roberts swore in Donald Trump. Since Trump is our new president, he
should at least address the protesters.
Besides, the first amendment law states congress shall make no law abridging freedom of speech.
I think it is really amazing so many came to protest outside the White House. I didn t think so
many people would be protesting. I really think all these protests are great, we are using the first

Andy Clark s Natural-Born Cyborgs Essay
Andy Clark, in Natural Born Cyborgs, offers an extended argument that technology s impact on and
intertwining with ordinary biological human life is not to be feared, either psychologically or
morally. Clark offers several key concepts towards his line of reasoning. Clark argues that a human
being thinks and reasons based on the biological brain and body dynamically linked with the culture
and technological tools transparently accessible to the human. This form of thinking and reasoning
develops new quot;thinking systems quot; that which over time become second nature thoughts and
reasons and are the basis of even newer quot;thinking systems. quot; It is a repetitive cycle that
continues forever being built upon previous systems.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The example he uses is of a boy trapped in isolation at a computer or video game. Clark asserts
that isolation is a matter of perspective, and that as it appears the boy is alone, he is actually
spending quality time in his chosen community that is brought together only through the power
of technology. He contends that this may expand our embodied awareness, In a strange way, we
may even come to better appreciate the value and significance of our normal bodily presence by
exploring such alternatives. Not disembodiment, then, so much as a deeper understanding of
why the body matters and of the space of possible bodies and perspectives. Not isolation so
much as a wider and less geocentric kind of community. (Clark, 194) The argument strategy that
Clark employs is similar to a critiquing strategy where he clearly defines his opponent s
concern(s), usually by the use of a real world example. After he has made the reader well aware
of his opponent s concern(s), he generally uses the same example to tactfully pitch his proposal
as a solution to eliminate or neutralize the concern. The proposal is based on one of two sources,
his personal beliefs or observations and theories based on his research and comprehensive
knowledge of humans, technology, and society. In some instances, he will offer multiple proposals
to strengthen his defense and allow the reader to understand there a several possibilities. It appears

The United Methodist Church
The United Methodist Church is growing and it is happening in nontraditional areas. Between 2005
and 2013 outreach ministries connected the UMC with diverse communities and created over
130,000 new disciples in His image. Outreach ministries believe in providing sustenance to who are
without basic needs and envision a day without want. On this foundation, missionaries built
programs and create an opportunity for growth. Through ministry, the UMC continues to provide
support and generosity to those who need help, while transforming missionaries actions into
disciples across the globe. UMC apportionments equip ministries and change the world.
The state of giving within The United Methodist Church has increased over the last decade. With
the rise in consumer confidence, United Methodist congregations are healthier than almost a
decade ago. The recession hurt everyone, but the US is finally seeing a proper economic
recovery. Between 2009 and 2014, both new private housing permits issued and total construction
spending increased by 81% and 7%, respectively. As unemployment fell to its lowest level since
2008, at 5.5% in June 2015, consumers are currently spending 21% more. Consumer confidence
index beat projections and rose above an average of 90.0 for eight straight months and indicate an
expansion in 2015 consumption. The US economy is in a better condition than six years ago and
the UMC reflects these trends.
The UMC connection is showing signs of economic recovery. First,

Gilette Turnaround Essay
Introduction
In 2001, Jim Kilts became the first non Gillette person in history to be named the Chairman and
CEO of Gillette. Kilts had a very successful change effort. By the beginning of 2005, Gillette had
$11 billion in revenues and sold products in over 170 countries. Gillette generated $2 billion in
cash compared with $400 million when Kilts first arrived. Before Kilt s arrival at Gillette, the
company had fifteen consecutive quarters of below budget earnings. Once the turnaround started
though, things changed such that by the end of 2004, Gillette posted six consecutive quarters of
record profits. According to Kanter and Bird 2008, employees who once worried about an imminent
takeover at the turn of the millennium, exuded a new confidence in themselves and in their teams.
The stock market rewarded the effort; Gillette s shares ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Among these is the need to identify and address the fundamental problems. Also critical is the
ability to stay focused on tackling the life threatening problems and to not waste resourses on the
non mission critical ones. The turnaround leader must therefore not be distracted by the symtoms,
but must remain resolute in addressing the underlying causes of the company s illness.
In order to determine the underlying causes of the cmpany s illness, a diagnostic review must be
undertaken. It would be pointless engaging in a grand plan to turnaround a company if turnaround
is not a viable option. There are therefore two critical uses of the diagnostic review; to determine
whether turnaround is a viable option and to determine what is the best implementation plan for the
turnaround.
According to Stuart, Lovett and Barlow 2006, In the turnaround process, the first task a prospective
turnaround leader will want to commence is an analysis of the situation. This initial and critical
phase has the following

Happy Holidays Folks! It s a magical time of the year. Have fun as you shop, enjoy special holiday
events, and spend time with your family.
Many of you will be displaying Christmas lights and yard decorations.
Here are some tips:
.Weatherproofing chord connections
Your source of power should come from a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) outlet. This device
will shut the circuit down if there is an overloaded current.
Use a waterproof extension cord cover. A waterproof extension cord cover unique protects extension

For a 20 amp circuit, the load limit is 2,400 watts. On a multiple outlet circuit, you find any
appliance or equipment rated at more than half the circuit rating, 900 watts for a 15 amp circuit
When using extension cords, make sure they are rated for outdoor use, and keep the connections
above ground, snow and water.
Plug all the lights in to make sure all bulbs are working.
Tape cords across walkways, and use the correct length needed to travel to your lights. You don t
want your cords to be too long so they pile up and create walking hazards.
A circuit is overloaded if the total load exceeds 1,800 watts for a 15 amp circuit. (120 volts x 15
amps = 1,800 watts.)
Make sure to turn your lights off when you leave or go to bed at night.
Use a good ladder when installing your lights. Secure them with insulated holders (never use tacks
or nails). .
Things to Remember
Never use indoor Christmas lights outdoors.
Don t place lights on trees that touch power lines.
Too many things plugged into a circuit can cause an overload
Look for the amp rating of the circuit in tiny numbers on the circuit breaker switch or fuse. For a 20

In fact, an expert from the L.A. Sheriff s Department who testified at the Sleepy Lagoon trial is
quoted as saying:
Let us view it from the biological basis. . . Total disregard for human life has always been
universal throughout the Americas in the human population. And this Mexican element feels a
desire to kill or at least to draw blood (Tobar, 1997). On top of the racism faced in the courtroom
was the media bias against the Mexican American population. In the process of covering events in
the city, the then Hearst owned papers did a series of articles on the pachuco gangs, depicting
Mexican American neighborhoods as being fraught with violence, places of raping and
pillaging (Tobar, 1997). This was the atmosphere of the city at the time of the Sleepy Lagoon
murder in 1942, when the body of Jose Diaz was found at a common swimming hole after a
party. Because of the public outrage over pachuco gangs, which was instigated by the media, the
sheriff s department went on a sweep of the city s barrios, rounding up and arresting over 600
young men in connection to the Sleepy Lagoon case. Eventually 24 men were indicted for murder,
and 12 were convicted (Tobar, 1997). During the trial in early 1943, the defendants were forced to

France language Essay
Numerous cultures from around the world have circulated many traditions to other cultures.
Although most of the traditions in the earlier eras were not recorded or written, through
communication skills, one is able to access these customs by interviewing someone from that
culture. Language is the key module to a single culture, whether only one culture speaks a particular
language or many cultures across the world share that same language. Sharing a language with
another culture is a way of combining two or more cultures together in which they have a mutual
characteristic of each culture. The French languageis spoken in several countries; some consist of

One of these customs is the use of the twenty four hour time for official diagrams and everyday
scheduling. The way people carry out their days emphasizes the foremost variation from culture to
culture. Annual calendars show a discrepancy in which the day comes preceding the current month.
Another contrast in culture involves food. In the modern day English culture, most families obtain
the groceries from a local supermarket or a confined grocery store. Throughout the French culture,
however, cuisine is purchased through a fresh market or a farmer s market before each meal or
day. This actually allows French citizens to spend less and eat more fresh food. The French culture
is an immense stretch or a diminutive stretch from the traditional way of life in the United States.
Another variation in the French language is the structure of grammar. Terms used in the French
language are very dissimilar compared to that of the English language. For instance, the English
word know is actually represented in two different ways used in the French verbal communication.
ConnaГ®tre is used when trying to say that one physically knows another. Savoir is used when one
actually possesses knowledge about a specific fact or truth. Both words are used to make the
statement that one knows something, but

The Importance Of Choosing A Career
Choosing a career is an immense decision that not only impacts your life but also the lives of
others. When we consider job occupations, several things come promptly to mind. We think
about job description and duties, the training and education required, job outlook, and annual
salaries. These are just a few of the factors I considered when searching for a profession. Since I
was a child, I always knew that I wanted to be in the medical field. I wanted a profession in
which I would be afforded the opportunity to make a difference in someone else s life. So I
started to examine my interests and skills, how long I wanted to be in school, the type of salary I
wanted to make and the potential for job growth in the industry. After investigating potential
careers, I figured out exactly what I wanted to be: a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer. I chose a
career in Diagnostic Medical Sonography because the job outlook is bright, the pay is
exceptional, I have most of the essential skills, and I can see myself performing this job for years
to come.
When it came to choosing a career, I wanted a profession where the pay is decent and there are
plentiful jobs in the workforce. Health careers are some of the fastest growing jobs in the U.S. and
Diagnostic Medical Sonography is no exception. Due to innovations in technology and the
increased dependence on diagnostic imaging for medical diagnosis, employment is projected to
grow much faster as more individuals are needed to fill

Cultural Relativism And Diversity
According to society s knowledge, many can come to an agreement that cultural relativism and
diversity can play a huge effect on whether different cultures and traditions share the same respect
for morals and values towards each other. However, these two things can be considered as two
widespread theories that are used to explain the differences amongst different varieties of cultures,
their ethics, and their morals. Between the two theories, both characterize the moral, ethical, and
societal differences that diverse cultures experience. From recalling the discussion of whether
everything is relative cultural, relativism is defined as to the aspect of all beliefs, customs, and
ethics being relative as to the individual within his/her own social... Show more content on

We should come together and reach an understanding of each other, and move beyond a simple
tolerance of life. We should try to embrace and honor the rich dimensions of diversification that is
embodied within each individual in a way that is customary to fit one s personality. This is better
known as their own characterization or virtue. In Benedict s The Case for Moral Relativism he
states, It is hard for us, born and brought up in a culture that makes no use of the experience, to
realize how important a role it may play and how many individuals are capable of it, once it has
been given an honorable place in any society... (page 133). From this, he claims that from
childhood to adulthood we are raised within certain standards of morals and considered to be
categorized within groups. These standards are unique to each group of people. As we grow out
of childhood, we become aware of the set of morals and values that have a tendency to change
over age and time. I personally do believe that morals will continue to change overtime, and due to
this, different culture variations will hold different cultural values and morals. It is hard to imagine
a world in which we all believe the same things are right and wrong. In Why Morality Is Not
Relative James Rachels summarizes the theory into one brief statement: To many thinkers, this
observation Different cultures have different moral codes has seemed to be the key to
understanding morality (page 139). The idea behind this quote was to share his point of view;
variations in diversity hold different types of moral views and interprets these views differently

Good And Evil In Frankenstein
The novel tells the story of the scientist Victor Frankenstein who loses touch with reality while
creating a new form of life, a monstrous being who nevertheless has human character traits. The
nameless creature appears to be a representation of evil, a character representing unconscious,
instinctual drives. Yet, the creature becomes only a monster due to denied love and rejection by
Victor Frankenstein. Thus, he swears to take revenge, transforming into a monster. Thus,
Frankensteinpresents two characters that cannot be easily determined good or evil as human beings
have both qualities within themselves.

As he reads these old works, Victor is not able to understand that these theories have long been

leaves his home to study at the university in Ingolstadt, Germany. After the death of his mother
Caroline, he feels the pain of solitude and retreats in the acquisition of knowledge, learning about
the limits of science and the human body.
First, one has the impression that Victor s interests in creating a being is only of honourable
nature: I thought that if I could bestow animation upon lifeless matter, I might in process of time
(although I now find it impossible) renew life where death had apparently devoted the body of
corruption (Shelley 53). However, he seems to be an unreliable narrator. The reader develops
doubts whether his true intentions are as noble as he tries to present. It appears that the true interest
is quite egoistic, as he desires to gain fame:
a light so brilliant and wondrous, yet so simple, that while I became dizzy with the immensity of
the prospect which it illustrated, I was surprised, that among so many men of genius who had
directed their enquiries towards the same science, that I alone should be reserved to discover so

  • 2. Uncertainty Reduction Theory “the Vow” and “Meet the Parents” Uncertainty Reduction Theory The Vow and Meet the Parents Uncertainty reduction theory is the point of view that uncertainty motivates communication and that certainty reduces the motivation to communicate (Wood, definition). This theory was first developed by Charles Berger. He believed that when people are to meet for the first time they have a high level of uncertainty and the only way for them to reduce it is to communicate with one another. They don t know what each other likes, thinks and believes; how each other responds to certain reactions, and they re unsure what each other expects or wants from interacting (Wood,184). There are three prior conditions that are meant to help individuals want to reduce uncertainty. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although their situation makes the reduction of uncertainty a lot more difficult because for Channing he remembers all the stuff they once did together, but Rachel cannot seem to place any remembrance on what they were like. She keeps remembering who she used to be before she met him, which was a completely different person. This causes him to get very frustrated with her, and this in turn puts a strain on them continuing of the reduction of uncertainty. There is a scene in the film where Channing takes Rachel out on a date and he brings her to all the places that they shared special moments at; where they first met, first date, and a ritual they would always do once a month. During this date the couple was able to talk and began to restart their relationship. I was able to see that from their communication it began to break the barrier between the couple, and allowed them to start to grow some feelings towards one another again. Where as in the film Meet the Parents the verbal communication between the father and the possible son in law they both do not know each other so everything is completely new about one another. I found that verbal communication actually decreased the chance of reducing the uncertainty between the two. For example the more they talked and learned about one another the more the conversation started to change because it helped them realize that they ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Call Of The Wild, White Fang, And The Sea Wolf Lauren Leibman Ms. Adams English III Honors 28 November 2017 Title of Your Report Author Background According to Franklin Walker, the well known American author of such beloved titles as The Call of the Wild, White Fang, and The Sea Wolf, was born on January 12, 1876 in San Francisco, California. He spent much of his childhood on ranches and the streets of Oakland, as well as sailing on San Francisco Bay. During his teenage years, London fell into strange and unfulfilling jobs that led to a personal revelation about the importance of an education. London spent a few months educating himself on both high school and college material, but when word of discovered gold in the Klondike spread, London, at the age of twenty one, left his home to participate in the hunt for treasure. He published a short story collection called The Son of the Wolf in 1900 and three years later his novel The Call of the Wild awarded him new fame and notoriety. After a successful career as a writer, London died in 1916 at the age of forty (Walker 1). Synopsis The Sea Wolf follows the adventure of Humphrey Van Weyden, a literary critic and essay writer who has never known any real hardship or physical challenge. At the start of the novel, Van Weyden boards a boat called The Martinez, wholly unaware that it is about to sink. As the vessel is pulled beneath the waves, Van Weyden jumps overboard and struggles in the freezingwater. Fortunately, he is rescued by the passing vessel The Ghost ... • 6. The Importance Of The Conversion Of Lower Energy Light Upconversion is a term that characterizes the conversion of lower energy light, particularly in the near infrared region, into higher energy light within the visible spectrum. This occurs through a process in which the sequential absorption of multi photon near infrared light yields the emission of lightthat is of shorter wavelength[1]. This process is represented in Figure 1, which shows the emissions of light within the visible spectrumafter excitation of various dopant ions by near infrared light[1]. The upconversion effect has been observed primarily in the rare earth metals of the lanthanides as well as yttrium, and scandium; however, some transition metals and actinides can also display this effect[2]. Lanthanide ions display special inner shell arrangements of 4fn 5d0 1, which allow for unique energy levels and provide shielding from the outer shells[2]. Due to their various f orbital configurations, lanthanide ions are able to display very sharp luminescence emissions via intra 4f or 4f 4d transitions[2,3]. The importance of the lanthanide ions is evident in several applications including applications in lasers, bioprobe applications, optical imaging, and photodynamic therapy [2,3]. This is due to their fluorescent properties, which include: resistance to photobleaching, monochromaticity, large Stokes shifts, narrow bandwidth, and long emission lifetime[2,3]. The direct excitation of the lanthanide ions is not very effective because they are limited by low ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. The Roles of Women in Medieval Scandinavia Essay When people think about Medieval Scandinavia they usually think about a cold northern region inhabited by a warrior people who spend all of their time sailing around in Viking warships and plundering from one another or going to war with their neighbors. While our archaeological evidence from this period may be rather scarce, many cite the Scandinavian pagan religions as a evidence of this warrior society due to the fact that men were encouraged to fight in order to be chosen by the gods to live in Valhalla, the pagan equivalent, loosely equivalent, of heaven. However, this only accounts for the men of the society, and no society can continue if it consists only of men. Were the women as concerned with war as their male comrades? Recent... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Norse pagan lore is rife with female characters that challenge their male counterparts and take tasks upon themselves rather than simply leaving them to men, in some cases of pagan myth, the female characters even participate in battles. Scandinavian society itself also contributed to allotment of power into female hands. Due to societal expectations, in order to advance in society the Scandinavian man was required to find a wife and produce offspring; however, due to the overall scarcity of women only a small number of men could achieve this and the rest were forced to look elsewhere for brides, these men were the Vikings who raided other lands and countries not merely to find wealth but also to find themselves wives. All of this evidence culminates in the fact that women in Scandinavia held a very different position than was previously believed and one such woman who is an exceptional example of the utilization of this power is Margaret I, Queen of Norway, Denmark, and Sweden. For these reasons we are lead to believe that there existed an expected realm of responsibility for both men and women throughout medieval Scandinavian society; however it also seems to have been expected that some women would go beyond these social limitations in order to take power and occasionally even participate in battle, and ... However, drawbacks such as weak or stolen passwords and unrecalled passwords, has frequently compromised security. Consequently, graphical passwordtechnique has been proposed from literatures as a solution. However, this technique still faced with the challenge of peep attacks, tradeoff between easy use (minima cognitive requirement) and secured strength (moderate complexity) issues. This research presented a graphic based password scheme using Arithmetic Operators and Numerical Value (AONV) in which the aforementioned issues are addressed. The AONV model consists of registration and verification stages which users must successfully complete in order to be authenticated. A hybrid technique based on recognition, cued and pure recall was adopted. The system security was enhanced by image matching, numerical value, computational numeric secret key, arithmetic operator and shuffling of images in grid cells. This help in frustrating shoulder surfing attacks during the login session and maintain balance between usability security strengthen. The model was implemented using C#.net programming language and SQL Server 2008 serves as the backend. It was observed that out of 18 registered users, 100% remembered their images, 94.44% were remembered their numerical value and operator and 88.89% computed their secret key ... • 12. Afternoons by Philip Larkin Essays Afternoons by Philip Larkin. A poem which reflects on the subject of marriage is Afternoons by Philip Larkin. The poem deals with Larkin s view on young mothers watching their kids playing in a playground and on this he concludes that marrying young and having children young, lead to the mothers losing their identity and destiny. The techniques used by the poet such as theme, imagery and tone deepened my understanding of the issue. The structure of the poem is simple; there are three stanzas with eight lines in each. However, unlike every other poem by Larkin this layout has no direct meaning. The lines are unrhymed. The first stanza deals with Larkin s rather cynical view of marriage and deals with the idea that the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By using the idea of wind in the poem, Larkin is able to add his own personal views. The wind acts as an idea of change. This is continued moreover in the third stanza via the use of enjambement. This enables Larkin to carry on and develop his point. Larkin s use of imagery is very effective. The courting places which were once used by the young mothers are changing but so are their children. The courting places are still being used, however, the people of whom should be using them now have the burden of children and can no longer have the fun this place entails. The unripe acorns as described by Larkin, are the children who are still in school . This implies Larkin, as an outsider observing and looking in, believes that as generations pass romance is lost further and that people have children far to young. The children within the school are not mature enough to realise what courting means. A grim humour is assumed when the reader realises these children still have a future wereas the young mothers do not.The tone of the poem has become increasingly more cynical. Larkin refers to how regimented the mothers lives are again when they are expected to pick up their children from school. The women have changed immensely with the pressures and responsibilities that the child has brought, they are putting on weight and losing their looks, probably due to having the children. The motion picture takes place after Harvey Milk s 40th birthday and captures the rest of his life as he strives to convince America to let the gay community out of the closet. The movie portrays the historical activist very well, including the surrounding characters as well as the actual events that took place during his time in office. Josh Brolin, the actor who played White, embodied the character in a way that the audience could understand. During the film, the audience can see that Harvey Milk and George Moscone developed a political relationship. Shortly after Dan White resigned his seat from the Board of Supervisors, Milk convinced Mayor Moscone that he would have a greater chance at being reelected mayor without White on the Board. Mayor George Moscone trusted Milk in this political judgment call. When the climactic scene of the two assassinations comes, the film depicts it accurately. After entering San Francisco s City Hall from another entrance to elude the metal detectors, White went to Moscone s office to plead for his reemployment. When Moscone denied him the occupation, White shot and killed him. Later in the same hour, White went to Milk s office and killed him as well. The film certainly displayed this scene accurately. Actor Sean Penn also delivered an outstanding performance playing the main character Harvey Milk. From the beginning to the end, Penn gave a believable presentation. In the film, Milk starts a camera business which then becomes a salon for homosexuals. While noticing that his surroundings are less than approving of the gay community, Milk decides to be a voice for those who are, metaphorically speaking, trapped behind closet doors. Because William is of Indian descent, he often gets characterized as a terrorist, but he also characterized a lot of other people that looked the same way as him. The whole world relies on mass media because it is today s way of retrieving information about the world. The media can either make you or break you. In this case, the media made all people of color look like terrorists blaming them for actions of others. Muslims are blamed for 9/11, and even though William is not a Muslim, he is stereotyped as a terrorist because of his physical features. For example the invisibility of Native Americans in mass media provides a unique vantage point for examining how media representations impact both identity and self understanding (Leavitt) which means whenever you do see a Native American on media, they are most likely shown as 19th or 18th century figures. Or they are stereotyped as poor, uneducated, and prone to addictions (Leavitt) but in this case William is the exact opposite, yet he still gets stereotyped as a different race because he does not meet the requirements for his own race. Not only is William stereotyped but so is Fekadu, William s taxi driver. Fekadu is a Muslim Oramo member from Ethiopia, yet people think [he is] black, they don t see [him] as a terrorist, only as a crack head addict on welfare. Once again we are seeing someone being misjudged by their physical appearance even though they are nowhere near the misinterpretations. • 17. Main Themes Of Dissatisfaction In The Mayor Of Casterbridge The Mayor of Casterbridge has two main themes. One theme is dissatisfaction, which is a main reason when the characters end relationships with each other. The other theme is the indelibility of the past. Some characters had long term effects when their past was learned by other characters. People were not forgiven for their past as easy in the early nineteenth as they are today. The author used these themes very well, for people to assert into their life. Dissatisfaction is very major in The Mayor of Casterbridge because many relationships are broken and mended in the book. Those characters are dissatisfied with their current state of being, so they move on to a different stage in their life, which can lead to other relationships being repaired. The author is teaching the readers to move on, if something in their life is dissatisfying them. One example of a character being dissatisfied is when Newson fakes his death because he knows Susan is not satisfied and wants to go back to Michael Henchard. Susan found out that she didn t have to stay with Newson, so she wanted to go back to Henchard. Susan became unpleasant to be around, and Newson knew she wanted to go back to Henchard. Allegory Of The Cave Vs Plato s Cave By writing The Allegory of the Cave or Plato s Cave, Plato tries to convey to people that they must escape the world of illusions and shadows and look at it with other eyes because that is the only way that they can find the true view of the world. In other words what I mean by other eyes is that people should see not only what is presented to them but see what is the real message hidden behind the illusion. People should think outside the box in order to break away from the delusions and discover the reality. Plato s allegory tells us about people s way of thinking about the world. In the essay I will explain why not everyone wants to open his or her eyes, how people are misguided by illusions, and why sometimes it is hard it is to see the reality. To begin with, we as a people have the ability to see but not everyone actually sees things, and often we believe in what is presented to us blindly. In the The Allegory of the Cave or Plato s Cave is written that the power to learn is presented in everyone s soul and that the instrument with which each learns is like eye that cannot be turned around from darkness to light without turning the whole body. By that he means that everybody has the ability to learn things but not everybody wants to see learn them. In other words, the power to learn is ability that everybody has but not everyone uses it properly. Effective communication helps connect with people. It can open many doors for many jobs. It lets the employer know whom they have hired, and how intelligent the person really is. In the business profession, effective communicationenables managers to give understandable instructions to their employees. Effective communication will help state what is expected from workers. I believe effective communication can be used in all aspects of the workplace. First, Susan Adams from Forbes wrote Good grammar is important in life. Using correct grammar in the workplace shows the intelligence of the worker. It also shows how well thoughts are put together before speaking. Using good grammar can also show employers that an employee can accomplish other tasks on the job no matter what it is. • 34. Science And Its Effect On Society Essay Science is the process which discovers knowledge, knowledge in turn is power, and power is said to bring about corruption. Therefore, through the transitive property, that implies that science will only lead to corruption. Not necessarily a corruption of one s actions; for instance, science won t make a politician accept a bribe. However, some would argue that sciencewill lead to a degradation of morals. For example, contemporary science may lead to a woman viewing her unborn baby as naught but a ball of cells, similar to a tumor, which can be removed from her body with no moral dilemma. The converse to this is the impediment of science due to humanity clinging to its archaic values. This can be shown by the opposition to stem cell research and genetically modified embryos in the name of morals and the inviolability of life. The stark contrast between following morals and advancing science creates a juxtaposition that often manifests itself as a debate between religionand science. Certain members of both the scientific and religious communities blindly adhere to their own opinions and ideals. This butting of heads helps no one. As a result, a middle road must be found, one in which neither progress nor moralityare ignored. The polarity between these two forces is encapsulated by the differences that Bertolt Brecht draws in his play Galileo between Galileo and the clergymen. This play, when contrasted with the reality of Galileo s studies, provides a vehicle to discuss the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 36. The Implications Of Oil Trade Even the important contribution of Chapter 2, the proposed analysis requires a deeper study to understand the implications related to oil trade and how the expected oil production will be consumed by the demand. Considering only Canada for all the expected oil production from the Western provinces doesn t seem enough. To achieve the forecasted production levels, producers of Western Canadian oil must find a market that values their oil at reasonable price. Without access to seaports, Alberta and Saskatchewan need to develop their transportation capacity to export this expected production. The challenge related to the increasing availability of Western Canadian oil and its distribution to domestic and international markets is imminent. Indeed, uncertainty in oil reserves and production implies uncertainty on future trade movements, and consequently, on oil corridors. It is now becoming a political, economic and national security matter that this oil finds access to other markets and export opportunities (McKenna, 2013). As for their actual markets, maintenance on existing pipelines and the necessity of upgrading refineries to process this crude oil from Western Canada create bottlenecks upstream that increase the constraints to allow the expected growth. All these challenges have economic implications that translate in a price differential. The oil production surplus and the inability to reach external markets already have negative effects on oil prices for Western Canadian ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Transitions Of Reptiles To Mammals Essay Transitions of Reptiles to Mammals nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; nbsp;A long long time ago, in a galaxy not too far away, was a little blue planet called Earth, and on this world not a single mammal lived. However a lot of time has past since then and we now have lots of furry creatures that are collectively called mammals. How did they get their? Where did they come from? These are the kinds of questions that led me to my subject of choice. I will endeavor to provide examples, using specific transitional fossils, to show that mammals have evolved from a group of reptiles and were simply not placed here by unknown forces. nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; Before I begin, I would like to define some terms so that nobody gets left in the dust.... Many attributes of mammals are correlated with their highly active lifestyle; for example, efficient double circulation of blood with a completely four chambered heart, anucleate and biconcave erythrocytes (blood cells), the diaphragm, and the secondary palate (which separates passages of food and air and allows breathing during mastication (chewing) or suckling). Hair for insulation correlates with endothermy (being warm blooded), the physiological maintenance of individual temperature independent of the environmental temperature, and endothermy allows high levels of sustained activity. the unique characteristics of mammals thus would seem to have evolved as a complex interrelated system. Ipsilateral Knee Injury Essay 1.1 Background Concomitant knee injuries and knee pain associated with lower limb fractures often stay undetected, or are inadequately addressed in fracture treatment plans, which then attributes to poor treatment outcomes. [1,2,3] The treatment of choice for tibial shaft fractures is intramedullary (IM) nailing.[4] After placing an IM nail during surgery, the ROM of the ipsilateral kneejoint can be compromised due to pain, undetected ligamental, meniscal injuries, or the positioning of the IM tibial nail itself. [2,5,6,7] Although knee pain has been announced the most frequent complication of IM nailing, often times these instabilities are overlooked during emergency surgical care and remain unaddressed in post surgical management. [3,8] Long term follow up studies on anterior knee pain described incidental rates between 10 and 83 percent among patients. He contends that this may expand our embodied awareness, In a strange way, we may even come to better appreciate the value and significance of our normal bodily presence by exploring such alternatives. Not disembodiment, then, so much as a deeper understanding of why the body matters and of the space of possible bodies and perspectives. After he has made the reader well aware of his opponent s concern(s), he generally uses the same example to tactfully pitch his proposal as a solution to eliminate or neutralize the concern. This actually allows French citizens to spend less and eat more fresh food. The French culture is an immense stretch or a diminutive stretch from the traditional way of life in the United States. Another variation in the French language is the structure of grammar. Terms used in the French language are very dissimilar compared to that of the English language. For instance, the English word know is actually represented in two different ways used in the French verbal communication. ConnaГ®tre is used when trying to say that one physically knows another. Savoir is used when one actually possesses knowledge about a specific fact or truth. Both words are used to make the statement that one knows something, but ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 52. The Importance Of Choosing A Career Choosing a career is an immense decision that not only impacts your life but also the lives of others. When we consider job occupations, several things come promptly to mind. We think about job description and duties, the training and education required, job outlook, and annual salaries. These are just a few of the factors I considered when searching for a profession. Since I was a child, I always knew that I wanted to be in the medical field. I wanted a profession in which I would be afforded the opportunity to make a difference in someone else s life. So I started to examine my interests and skills, how long I wanted to be in school, the type of salary I wanted to make and the potential for job growth in the industry. After investigating potential careers, I figured out exactly what I wanted to be: a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer. I chose a career in Diagnostic Medical Sonography because the job outlook is bright, the pay is exceptional, I have most of the essential skills, and I can see myself performing this job for years to come. When it came to choosing a career, I wanted a profession where the pay is decent and there are plentiful jobs in the workforce. Health careers are some of the fastest growing jobs in the U.S. and Diagnostic Medical Sonography is no exception. Due to innovations in technology and the increased dependence on diagnostic imaging for medical diagnosis, employment is projected to grow much faster as more individuals are needed to fill ... • 53. Cultural Relativism And Diversity According to society s knowledge, many can come to an agreement that cultural relativism and diversity can play a huge effect on whether different cultures and traditions share the same respect for morals and values towards each other. However, these two things can be considered as two widespread theories that are used to explain the differences amongst different varieties of cultures, their ethics, and their morals. Between the two theories, both characterize the moral, ethical, and societal differences that diverse cultures experience. From recalling the discussion of whether everything is relative cultural, relativism is defined as to the aspect of all beliefs, customs, and ethics being relative as to the individual within his/her own social... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We should come together and reach an understanding of each other, and move beyond a simple tolerance of life. We should try to embrace and honor the rich dimensions of diversification that is embodied within each individual in a way that is customary to fit one s personality. This is better known as their own characterization or virtue. In Benedict s The Case for Moral Relativism he states, It is hard for us, born and brought up in a culture that makes no use of the experience, to realize how important a role it may play and how many individuals are capable of it, once it has been given an honorable place in any society... (page 133). From this, he claims that from childhood to adulthood we are raised within certain standards of morals and considered to be categorized within groups. These standards are unique to each group of people. As we grow out of childhood, we become aware of the set of morals and values that have a tendency to change over age and time. I personally do believe that morals will continue to change overtime, and due to this, different culture variations will hold different cultural values and morals. It is hard to imagine a world in which we all believe the same things are right and wrong. In Why Morality Is Not Relative James Rachels summarizes the theory into one brief statement: To many thinkers, this observation Different cultures have different moral codes has seemed to be the key to understanding morality (page 139). The idea behind this quote was to share his point of view; variations in diversity hold different types of moral views and interprets these views differently from those of another ... • 54. Good And Evil In Frankenstein The novel tells the story of the scientist Victor Frankenstein who loses touch with reality while creating a new form of life, a monstrous being who nevertheless has human character traits. The nameless creature appears to be a representation of evil, a character representing unconscious, instinctual drives. Yet, the creature becomes only a monster due to denied love and rejection by Victor Frankenstein. Thus, he swears to take revenge, transforming into a monster. Thus, Frankensteinpresents two characters that cannot be easily determined good or evil as human beings have both qualities within themselves. When examining Shelley s Frankenstein, one should consider the figure of the creator, Victor Frankenstein. He was born to Caroline and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As he reads these old works, Victor is not able to understand that these theories have long been invalidated. With the ideas of alchemy, the study of the philosopher s stone and the elixir of life, he leaves his home to study at the university in Ingolstadt, Germany. After the death of his mother Caroline, he feels the pain of solitude and retreats in the acquisition of knowledge, learning about the limits of science and the human body. First, one has the impression that Victor s interests in creating a being is only of honourable nature: I thought that if I could bestow animation upon lifeless matter, I might in process of time (although I now find it impossible) renew life where death had apparently devoted the body of corruption (Shelley 53). However, he seems to be an unreliable narrator. The reader develops doubts whether his true intentions are as noble as he tries to present. It appears that the true interest is quite egoistic, as he desires to gain fame: a light so brilliant and wondrous, yet so simple, that while I became dizzy with the immensity of the prospect which it illustrated, I was surprised, that among so many men of genius who had directed their enquiries towards the same science, that I alone should be reserved to discover so astonishing a secret (Shelley ...
