This learning material will help the learner to demonstrate understanding on the
principles of designing and planning the ladies skirt. This will guide the learners to identify
the different kinds of skirt that have tremendously evolve in the fashion trends.
From the beginning people strive its own spectacular outfit that can stand in the
crowd, not only for self-entitlement but also to help economic crisis. Continuous
advancement in clothing has a connection with social, economic, and technological
aspect that happening all over the world.
People are always longing to look at his/her best to be attractive and fashionable.
This also vary from every person through season and the mode of fashion changes and
evolve from time to time. An ordinary woman wearing a well-fitted garment look smart
than a pretty lady wearing a lousy dress. Wearing a well-fitted garment promotes proper
grooming and self-development.

What is It
Draft and Cut pattern for ladies’ skirt
LO 1.1. Plan Garment Design
The Form and shape of the costume is determined by the cut of the skirt and the
length somehow vary by the current mode of the client but variation depend on the
occasion, purpose, the wearer’s figure, age and shape.
Principles and Elements of Design
The principles and elements of design is the foundation in creating the work of art
not only in fashion but also applicable in our daily living. To have a good taste has
something to do with understanding and using the principles and elements of design in
such a way that we appreciate good things, artwork, fashion, artisan, and lot more that
are pleasing to our eyes. This brings us to understand how things work together.
1. Proportion in design involves the relationship of one part to another. Uneven space
relationships are more interesting than even ones.
2. Balance is the feeling of rest and equilibrium. This is essential to the total design of a
costume.
a. Formal or Symmetrical Balance - achieved when both sides of a design are
alike or equal.
b. Informal balance or Asymmetrical Balance - is achieved by using space,
color, and the varying importance of objects to produce a feeling of rest. Balance
in the use of color is essential for a pleasing effect.
c. Radial Balance - When major parts of the garment design radiate from the focal
point to other parts of the garment creating a sunburst.
3. Harmony or Unity- is the pleasing combination of hues, values, and intensities. The
color wheel is presented for a pleasing arrangement and relationship of colors to the
proper dress that is best for the clients’ features.
4. Emphasis is achieved by the designer’s ability to create center of interest by which
the viewer’s eyes are directed to a specific area of a garment or body part.
5. Rhythm is the recurrence of movement of the eye from one part to another part of the
design. There are several ways of producing rhythm in a design.
a. repetition
b. progression
c. transition
d. radiation
e. continuous line movement
6
Elements of Design
1. Form refers to the shape of an object as determined by line. In costume design the
silhouette is the term used to describe form which may repeat, may contrast, or be
transitional.
2. Line is a basic part of any design. Lines may be horizontal, vertical, straight, curved,
diagonal, radiating, down-sweeping, up-sweeping, or angular, and they can create
interesting illusions.
3. Shape of clothes reveal or disguise the natural body contour or shape. Wide, full
shapes clothes will make you look larger while trim, compact dress will make you look
smaller.
4. Texture is the feel, appearance, and weight of a fabric. It appeals strongly to the sense
of touch, whether it is coarse, fine, smooth, rough, wrinkled, sleek, glossy, and
slippery. Textures are affected by weave, finishes, and the nature of the fibers and
yarns used in weaving.
5. Color is the most powerful element of design. The first thing that attracts attention in
clothing is the color of the dress.
Types of Design
a. Structural design- is the outline of the garment formed by the arrangement of
lines, forms, colors, and textures. These four elements are precisely arranged and
applied.
b. Decorative design – refers to the surface enrichment of the structural design as
to give decoration to the garments such as unusual buttons, belts, laces, and other
contrasting collars and cuffs.
Types and Properties of Fabrics Suited for Ladies’ Skirt
Textile is a versatile material for dressmakers. It consists of natural and artificial
fibers in which textile designers creates plenty of new textile formed from different fiber
combinations and it also varies from beauty, suitability, and durability of the garment.
Care and Maintenance Uses
1. Gabardine- a hard-wearing suiting
fabric with a distinctive weave that has
sheen. It is difficult to handle as it is
springy, frays and prone to shine when
ironed directly to the fabric. Set the iron
to wool setting or steam iron. Use
pressing cloth as the fabric will mark
and will shine.
Thread: polyester all- purpose thread
or
100% cotton thread
Needle: machine size 14; Sharps for
hand sewing
Used for: men’s and ladies’ wear,
jackets,
pants
7
2. Linen is a natural fiber that comes
from the stem of the flax plant. It is cool
and comfortable to wear and absorbs
moisture as well. It is easy to shrink
when washed and tends to wrinkleand
does not ease well since it is prone to
fraying. It resists moths but is damaged
by mildew.
Steam iron on a cotton setting.
Avoid pressing in sharp creases.

Needle: machine size 14; sharps for
hand sewing
Used for: summer weight jackets,
dresses, pants, skirts
3. Denim is a type of cotton textile
wherein the crosswise thread passes of
two or more wrap threads. An indigo
Demin only wrap thread is dyed.
Hence, blue jeans show the blue warp
threads outside and the other side
shows the white weft threads. This
creates the fading of denim because of
its dyeing characteristics. This is its
uniqueness compared to another
textile.

with top –stitching thread for detail top
stitching.
Needle: machine size 14/16; sharps for
hand sewing Use for: jeans, jackets,
children’s wear
Steam iron on a cotton setting; a
pressing cloth is not required
4. Poplin- also called tabinet (or
tabbinet), It is a blend of any fibersthat
is plain weave with crosswise ribs and
tightly woven to makes it a strong
textile. Avoid risk of mildew.
Thread: polyester all- purpose thread
Needle: machine size 14; sharps for
hand sewing.
Used for: shirts, trousers, skirts
5. Broadcloth- has a smooth, lustrous
appearance and a medium-weight
fabric is closely woven cotton and has a
slightly rib.
Steam iron on a cotton setting Avoid
pressing in sharp creases.
Thread: polyester all- purpose thread or
100% cotton thread
Needle: machine size 14; Sharps for
hand sewing
Used for: Casual wear, children’s wear,
shirts, skirts

6. Gingham- comes from the Malayan
word genggang meaning Striped. This
Textile is a blended cotton fabric that
balanced plain-woven fabric.
This is commonly used for school
uniforms.
Thread: polyester all-purpose thread
Needle: machine size 11/12; sharps for
hand sewing.
Used for: children’s wear, dresses,
shirts, home furnishings.
7. Sharkskin is a two-toned woven
appearance textile that shows its Thread: polyester all- purpose thread
smooth worsted and soft texture. It is a
lightweight and wrinkle free fabric that
is made up of the combination of rayon

and acetate.
Used for: apparel,
This may be used for everything from
trousers, skirts
sporting and marine equipment to
clothing and accessories.
8. Corduroy – is a strong, durable
fabric with lengthwise cords and ridges.
Originally made of cotton but now a
days it is already blended with other
fibers. The word Corduroy comes from
the French word “Cord of the king”.
Thread: polyester all-purpose thread
Needle: machine size 12/16; sharps or
milliners for hand sewing
This can be used in making jacket,
blazer, jeans, skirt, shorts, and for
upholstery.
Used for pants, skirts, men’s wear
Determining the Quality and Suitability of the Fabric
Fabric is a versatile sewing cloth material through weaving or knitting textile fibers
used by dressmakers. There some simple test to determine the quality and durability of
the fabric.
1. Test by Thumb
The strength and shape of the fabric both lengthwise and crosswise can be
determined by grasping the fabric sample using both thumbs and forefingers. Moving the
hands back so the thumbs separate as the fabric stretch and the weak fabric pull apart or
become thin when they stretched.
2. Test by Pin
Pin a small tuck of sample fabric and pull the fabric both sides back and forth, if
the fabric tears or pulls away from pin there is probably a slippage of thread.
9
3. Test for Sizing
Through sizing we can determine the quality of the fabric by rubbing the fabric
between your hands and observe if there is a powder like dust coming or falling out which
indicate that there is a stiffening agent added to the fabric and for the heavily sized the
rubbed part of the fabric look thinner when held to the light, there is also a limp and coarse
appearance.
4. Test for Straightness of Grain
Examine fabrics to determine whether the fabric grain will need to be
straightened. At one end of the fabric, observe whether lengthwise and crosswise
threads are at right angles to each other. Designs on printed fabric must be exactly
on crosswise grain; otherwise do not purchase.
5. Test for Wrinkle Resistance
Grab the corner of the fabric and crumple then release it and observe the degree
of wrinkling in it.
6. Test for Ability to Take Pleats
Form a pleat on the fabric by holding it crosswise an lengthwise then press it with
your hand then observe if the pleats remain or fall-out.
Styles of Skirt
Skirt is a free hanging part of an outer garment or undergarment extending from
the waist down to a desired length. The name of the skirt denotes its shape or design.
Wearing the skirt, must be appropriate to the wearer’s body figure and to the skirt style
for a pleasing appearance that can boost confidence. There are few basic categories of
skirt styles:
1. Straight skirt -This also refers as a pencil skirt that is long and slim at the hem like
a pencil, has no flare or fullness at the hem or waistline, It is a narrow cut line and
slim-fitting straight skirt. referred to as a pencil skirt, this skirt is a straight line with no
flare or fullness at the hem or waistline.
a. Short Straight Skirt This type of skirt is above the knee level which has a
flattering effect for the wearer, micro- mini skirts are good for those who have slim
and long-legged figures.
b. Long Straight Skirt the length is below the knee level and tapers at the end part
of the legs.
2. A-Line/ Flared Skirt This is a skirt that looks like the letter A where its name comes
from. This is the best style for all woman who have narrow waistline and flare wider
towards the bottom. It fits all types of hips.
3. Gored Skirt This type of skirt is very classic is always in fashion and most flattering
styles that gives an illusion of height and slimness because of the emphasis of the
gore style it can be straight or curvy. This must flare from hips to hem line and consist
of four, six, eight or more gores.
10
4. Pleated/ Tucked Skirt is the type of skirt that has pleats which create a refined
vertical line, and this is best for slim and narrow-hipped figures.
a. Box pleated skirt – this has a double pleat of two upper folds facing in opposite
direction the two under folds pressed facing each other.
b. Fix box pleated skirt- a flat double pleat made by folding under the fabric on
either side of it.
c. Knife pleated skirt- this skirt style has a series of sharply creased narrow pleat
folded on the same direction.
d. Accordion pleated skirt- this skirt is the series of narrow and evenly spaced
parallel pleat set by a commercial pleating machine.
5. Gathered Skirt this type of skirt creates weight and bulk to any figure because the
fabric gathers at the waistband of the skirt.

  • 9. 5 What is It Draft and Cut pattern for ladies’ skirt LO 1.1. Plan Garment Design The Form and shape of the costume is determined by the cut of the skirt and the length somehow vary by the current mode of the client but variation depend on the occasion, purpose, the wearer’s figure, age and shape. Principles and Elements of Design The principles and elements of design is the foundation in creating the work of art not only in fashion but also applicable in our daily living. To have a good taste has something to do with understanding and using the principles and elements of design in such a way that we appreciate good things, artwork, fashion, artisan, and lot more that are pleasing to our eyes. This brings us to understand how things work together. 1. Proportion in design involves the relationship of one part to another. Uneven space relationships are more interesting than even ones. 2. Balance is the feeling of rest and equilibrium. This is essential to the total design of a costume. a. Formal or Symmetrical Balance - achieved when both sides of a design are alike or equal. b. Informal balance or Asymmetrical Balance - is achieved by using space, color, and the varying importance of objects to produce a feeling of rest. Balance in the use of color is essential for a pleasing effect. c. Radial Balance - When major parts of the garment design radiate from the focal point to other parts of the garment creating a sunburst. 3. Harmony or Unity- is the pleasing combination of hues, values, and intensities. The color wheel is presented for a pleasing arrangement and relationship of colors to the proper dress that is best for the clients’ features. 4. Emphasis is achieved by the designer’s ability to create center of interest by which the viewer’s eyes are directed to a specific area of a garment or body part. 5. Rhythm is the recurrence of movement of the eye from one part to another part of the design. There are several ways of producing rhythm in a design. a. repetition b. progression c. transition d. radiation e. continuous line movement
  • 10. 6 Elements of Design 1. Form refers to the shape of an object as determined by line. In costume design the silhouette is the term used to describe form which may repeat, may contrast, or be transitional. 2. Line is a basic part of any design. Lines may be horizontal, vertical, straight, curved, diagonal, radiating, down-sweeping, up-sweeping, or angular, and they can create interesting illusions. 3. Shape of clothes reveal or disguise the natural body contour or shape. Wide, full shapes clothes will make you look larger while trim, compact dress will make you look smaller. 4. Texture is the feel, appearance, and weight of a fabric. It appeals strongly to the sense of touch, whether it is coarse, fine, smooth, rough, wrinkled, sleek, glossy, and slippery. Textures are affected by weave, finishes, and the nature of the fibers and yarns used in weaving. 5. Color is the most powerful element of design. The first thing that attracts attention in clothing is the color of the dress. Types of Design a. Structural design- is the outline of the garment formed by the arrangement of lines, forms, colors, and textures. These four elements are precisely arranged and applied. b. Decorative design – refers to the surface enrichment of the structural design as to give decoration to the garments such as unusual buttons, belts, laces, and other contrasting collars and cuffs. Types and Properties of Fabrics Suited for Ladies’ Skirt Textile is a versatile material for dressmakers. It consists of natural and artificial fibers in which textile designers creates plenty of new textile formed from different fiber combinations and it also varies from beauty, suitability, and durability of the garment. Care and Maintenance Uses 1. Gabardine- a hard-wearing suiting fabric with a distinctive weave that has sheen. It is difficult to handle as it is springy, frays and prone to shine when ironed directly to the fabric. Set the iron to wool setting or steam iron. Use pressing cloth as the fabric will mark and will shine. Thread: polyester all- purpose thread or 100% cotton thread Needle: machine size 14; Sharps for hand sewing Used for: men’s and ladies’ wear, jackets, pants
  • 11. 7 2. Linen is a natural fiber that comes from the stem of the flax plant. It is cool and comfortable to wear and absorbs moisture as well.
