3. SPACE 3 is the area inside and enclosed shape. The use of space can lead to an
interesting design. But the overuse of space could make the design confusing while
space could be unattractive and boring.
4. FORM OR SHAPE refers to the form of a person showing the curves of the body.
This includes the shape of the face, neckline and the full body figure.
a. Form 3 is a volume space enclosed a surface.
b. Shape 3 is simply a flat space enclosed by a line.
5. TEXTURE 3 is the surface quality of an object, rough, smooth, silky, etc.
Characteristics of a Fabric Suitable for Pajama Pants
1.Cotton Fabrics are appropriate to wear in tropical countries
like Philippines because they are good conductors of heat. It
absorbs and releases sweat relatively quick.
2. Linen is appropriate for pajama tops and it is popular called
the summer fiber. Linen like cotton needs frequent
laundering.
3.Rayon is very similar to silk. Both have low elasticity and
resiliency and are quite good conductors of heat.
4. Silk is another very popular fabric for pajamas as it makes
you feel comfortable in a very luxurious and stylish manner.
5.Polyester is a man-made synthetic fabric that is used for
making wide range of long lasting and comfortable clothing.
Satin polyester is normally used for making pajamas as it is
inexpensive alternative of silk.

Guides in Selecting Appropriate Fabric for Oneself
Crumple the fabric in your hand and hold it for 30 seconds. Then release it for about
30 seconds. Observe and see if it wrinkles easily.
See if the fabric is evenly dyed with pleasing colors. The fabric should be clear and
not blurred.
Points to remember:
Ø Check on the quality and cost of the fabric.
Ø Always determine the quantity needed to avoid waste of money.
Ø Your personality and complexion must be considered in fabric selection.

French curve shears tailor9s chalk
Marking Tools Used in Pattern Drafting
Marking tools is used to transfer the pattern symbols onto the fabric. It is essential to
transfer these symbols for correct fitting and sewing
Tracing wheel is available in a serrated or smooth edge.
The serrated edge is used to make a dotted link marking in
most fabrics.
Dressmaker9s carbon paper or tracing paper is used to
transfer the tracing wheel9s line to the wrong side of the
fabric.
Tailor9s chalk can be used to mark directly onto the fabric.
It does not need sharpening like a chalk pencil.
Chalk pencil is filled with chalk at one end of the pencil and
a brush at the other end to remove chalk marks.
Liquid marking pens are used to mark tucks, darts, pleats
and pockets. One type disappears after about 48 hours.
Another type washes off with water.

Pattern Symbols or Construction Markings
These guides help the sewer put together and sew the pieces of garment easily.
1. Straight Grain or Direction The selvage is the finished edge of fabric. It usually has
a different color or texture.
Pleat This little symbol marks the beginning and ending of a
pleat. The arrow indicates which way to fold.
Notches
Notches will help the sewer perfectly match the
pieces easily. These are the V-shaped symbols or
triangles along the cutting line.
Fold Fold the fabric and place the pattern's edge on the fold.
When you cut do it around the pattern only, never cut
the folded edge.
Dots They are used to mark important parts of the patterns
such as dart points or pocket placement (see the image
above).
Slash This is the part of the pattern where you can safely
adjust the length.
Cutting
Lines
These vary depending on the pattern company but
they're usually marked with a dark line and scissors
symbol or dotted line.
Buttonholes Mark where to make the buttonholes.
Buttons This is where to sew the buttons
Stitching Lines These are a guide so you can see where the line of
stitching intersects and where you will not be stitching.
Fold Line/Centerfold This indicates that the edge of the pattern must be
placed on the folded part of the fabric. This is when
cutting two sides of the garment parts as left and right
or back and front parts.

BODY MEASUREMENT (PAJAMA PANTS)
1. Pants Length Taken from the waist at the side to the desired length. It can
be from waist to knee, from waist to the middle of the leg or
from waist to the middle of the ankle bone.
2.Rise or Crotch The distance from the waist to the crotch is called rise. It can
be taken in three ways:
¥ Measure from the waist down to the crotch, then
gently pull it through the back and up to the same level
as the waist.
¥ Put a ruler under the crotch. Measure from the waist
down to the level of the ruler.
`
¥ Allow the patron to sit on a flat surfaced chair. Take
measurement from the hipbone down to the level of
the chair.
3. Waist Measure ¥ Taken around the smallest part of the waist. Tie a
string around the general waist area to area to easily
locate the natural waist. Make sure it is snug and
comfortable.
4. Sit or Hip Measure ¥ This is taken around the fullest part of the hips. The
location of the hips is about 18 cm to 23cm from the
waist.

Procedure in Drafting Basic/Block Pattern for Pajama Pants
(Front & Back)
Basic pattern is the <starting point= for Flat-pattern Designing.
It is a simple pattern that fits the body with just enough ease for freedom of movement.
The basic pattern is sometimes called a master or foundation pattern. The drafted
pattern is referred to as the block.
Salient Measures to Observe in drafting patterns
1. Be sure to have an accurate division of the measurement. Use L-square.
2. Use the aid of a hip curve if necessary.
3. Always use the L-square or ruler in making lines.
4. French curve is necessary in shaping the neckline as well as that of the
armhole to produce a perfect curve.
5. Use weights or dressmaker9s pins so that the pattern will be moved.
Kinds of Pattern
1. Block Pattern 3made by drafting from which have been carefully from an
individual or from a model.
2. Construction pattern 3the intervening step between the block and the final pattern.
Designs are complicated, construction patterns are sectioned
3. Final pattern 3provided with the necessary symbols for darts, seam allowances,
center fold, and notches and other markers are used

It is essential to transfer these symbols for correct fitting and sewing Tracing wheel is available in a serrated or smooth edge. The serrated edge is used to make a dotted link marking in most fabrics. Dressmaker9s carbon paper or tracing paper is used to transfer the tracing wheel9s line to the wrong side of the fabric. Tailor9s chalk can be used to mark directly onto the fabric. It does not need sharpening like a chalk pencil. Chalk pencil is filled with chalk at one end of the pencil and a brush at the other end to remove chalk marks. Liquid marking pens are used to mark tucks, darts, pleats and pockets. One type disappears after about 48 hours. Another type washes off with water. DRESSMAKING-9-SSLM-V3-Q1-week-3-4 9 Downloaded by Korner Rito (pkrnmy.02@gmail.com) lOMoARcPSD|17239203
  • 11. 3 GSC-CID-LRMS-ESSLM, v.r. 03.00, Effective June 14, 2021 Pattern Symbols or Construction Markings These guides help the sewer put together and sew the pieces of garment easily. 1. Straight Grain or Direction The selvage is the finished edge of fabric. It usually has a different color or texture. Pleat This little symbol marks the beginning and ending of a pleat. The arrow indicates which way to fold. Notches Notches will help the sewer perfectly match the pieces easily. These are the V-shaped symbols or triangles along the cutting line. Fold Fold the fabric and place the pattern's edge on the fold. When you cut do it around the pattern only, never cut the folded edge. Dots They are used to mark important parts of the patterns such as dart points or pocket placement (see the image above). Slash This is the part of the pattern where you can safely adjust the length. Cutting Lines These vary depending on the pattern company but they're usually marked with a dark line and scissors symbol or dotted line. Buttonholes Mark where to make the buttonholes. Buttons This is where to sew the buttons Stitching Lines These are a guide so you can see where the line of stitching intersects and where you will not be stitching. Fold Line/Centerfold This indicates that the edge of the pattern must be placed on the folded part of the fabric. This is when cutting two sides of the garment parts as left and right or back and front parts. DRESSMAKING-9-SSLM-V3-Q1-week-3-4 10 Downloaded by Korner Rito (pkrnmy.02@gmail.com) lOMoARcPSD|17239203
