1. Reflection
My Idea of Leadership before this program was defined as, an ability to help others by
communicating and guiding others. As I continued this program my idea of leadership was
influenced by the many events I attended that taught me how to perform my leadership skills
such as communication and being a critical thinker. As a result of this program I learned that by
engaging with others I am able to communicate better and expand my thoughts on how others
feel and think. I also learned that by allowing myself to be involved in my community I am able
to help others and give guidance based on how others feel. The M:POWR project had the most
impact on me because I was able to apply myself to others and give guidance by communicating
with the individuals there. I was first intimidated by the project but as I continued toward this
project I found myself becoming more open minded and grasping multiple characteristics such as
compassion. I was able to learn how individuals think and how to assist others based on their
thoughts. I have made progress towards my SMART Goals by working towards applying to
intern at a hospital next semester to assist my nursing career path. I have collected letters of
recommendation that will allow me to further apply to the hospital that I would like to intern at.
By submitting my resume I will be one step further to my path. I will also work towards joining
the Student Nurse Association to learn more about my major and work towards bettering myself.
What I’ve learned in TLC will further help me in the future for my job occupation I would like to
pursue which is nursing. For this occupation many specific traits are needed one being
compassion. Compassion is mandatory for taking care of individuals because by showing them
emotion and care they are more likely to stay calm and feel secure. TLC has allowed me to
obtain this trait through the M:POWR project by conversing with other individuals and assisting
them with their needs. I also learned communication skills which in nursing will allow me to
communicate with my peers and further create better skills by asking questions and responding
with thought on other thoughts and opinions. I was able to apply TLC to my philosophy class
which caused me to think critically and have an open mind of other thoughts and opinions others
had on a concept of the course. For my civic engagement I attended a baseball game for my
community that allowed me to be involved outside of school. I also learned from this experience
to communicate and understand others. Another event I attended was M:POWR which was a
project, and this experience taught me how to lead by communication. By communicating with
others I was able to become a critical thinker and grasp the thoughts of others. For campus
engagement I attended two movies that allowed me to become more involved with school
activities and be more social. By doing so I was able to interact with others and learned their
feelings and thoughts on the movie. I also attended a civility cafe which helped me to engage
with my peers and learn how individuals sought out different opinions and ideas. I then was able
to converse on ideas with others and see their points of views. One last event I attended was a
surf competition for a friend and this allowed me to not only be involved with my community
but support others. I realized that supporting others allows for a positive attitude in the end.
2. Components that I acquired from this program was communication, becoming a critical thinker,
and having leadership. Before I knew what these components meant but did not know how to
apply them to situations. I have implemented these components into my life by understanding
others before I make a judgement or statement, and being open minded.
