My TLC Reflection Paper
My idea of leadership is someone who is very confident, organized, and openminded.
They are not afraid of resistance and follow what they believe in, even when no one else is with
them. They help lead the weaker ones and guide them until they are strong enough to lead
themselves and others. My idea of leadership has changed from the TLC program such as
learning that micro aggression is more common than we notice. I have gained the knowledge of
how to be a good leader, you have to be able to connect with people of diverse culture
backgrounds. It has brought to my attention that, I myself have inadvertently committed micro
aggression towards other people and now am watching myself to never let it happen again. The
program has opened my eyes that everyone thinks differently and that when some people are
being rude, they may not know it because they have their own customs that they follow that I
may not have grown up with.
Before I mention about my SMART goals, my career goal is to be a Dentist one day and
manage my own company. I am a Christian and want to attend a church regularly. My SMART
goals were to join the Pre-Dental society on campus and to attend to one of the Christian
programs. I have researched the Pre-Dental society but have not joined or attended to one of their
gatherings, but I do plan in the future to join the Pre-Dental society soon. I have not gone to any
other the Christian programs on campus but did attend to one of the services at the Summit
Church during their weekend services since my schedule during the week is more busy.
2. The TLC program has taught me how to deal with difficult situations with other people.
I learned that there will always be controversial topics that will stimulate unpleasant
conversations. We must always allow the other person to let out everything they have to say
before we respond to them our perspective of the topic. I have learned to not interrupt the other
person in the middle of them speaking because it will come out as rude to them. The most
respectful thing to do is to not make the other person feel bad about their personal beliefs. This
will help me to be more considerate of other people’s views and the way I make people feel after
they speak their beliefs, it’s how they will treat me. The TLC program has helped me to be a
better team player in my group projects in history by realizing that everyone has their own
customs and I must be respectful to them.
For my campus engagement hours, I participated in the Top Cat cooking competition.
During the Top Cat cooking competition taught me good teamwork with my roommates and
showed me that my contribution to our dish was just as important as everyone else’s. I also went
to many of the yoga classes offered by the school and one of the most important things I learned
is that our personal health and happiness are very important and it’s never bad to do something
for yourself. I also volunteered off campus at the Charity Wings Art Center and was a waiter for
their charity dinner for their big donors of their wonderful program. I learned how to serve
people and assist them with questions if they had any. I also learned how to be respectful of
everyones way of expressing their personalities and be nice to everyone I encounter. The TLC
program has made me realize that the things I share online will stay on there forever, even if I
delete it because people can always screen shot it and send it to other people. I now put my social
media accounts as private and be more aware of who I allow to follow me.
