Peer Reflection
Peer Reflection Report
For my peer reflection assignment, I chose to review a video posted by Lana Pachuca. I chose her
video because I have watched most of my classmates videos over the past few weeks, however this
was the first week I was able to watch one of hers. Also, her counseling session was focusing on
helping a client deal with coping skills for anxiety and I was interested in seeing the outcomes of the
client using the coping skills over the course of a week.
I felt that Lana did a great job of demonstration how to use reflection of content back to the client.
For example, Lana asked her client how the past week of using the coping skills turned out for her,
and Lana was able to clearly articulate how the client was successful at ... Show more content on

However, I have realized that counseling skills can be learned, practiced and mastered over time.
Although I believe that I have some natural abilities that can be considered helping skills in
counseling, I have learned that I have some strengths that can be refined and continually
strengthened, while those skills that I am naturally weak in can be the skills that I focus on
developing through practice and research. For example, I know that I do well with making people
feel comfortable by exhibiting an open posture, while attending to them with relevant open–ended
questions. On the other end, I struggle with using various sentence stems when reflecting back
emotions and content to the client. I also found myself struggling at times clearly communicating
directions to interventions that I would like for a client to try during a counseling session. It was an
enlightening experience to be able to watch my classmates learn and grow in developing their
counseling skills and techniques too. I felt like we are all able to not only learning from one another
but have the opportunity to engage in some of the modeling techniques we learning about in the
behavioral interventions section of our text (Hackney & Cormier,

Reflection
Reflections Both simple and complex reflections were used. A simple reflection used towards the
beginning of the interview transpired into, "pretty active out doing a lot of things." Alternatively, a
complex reflection used when reflecting on Sarah's feelings about what her friends think about her
not socializing subsisted of, "it bothers you thinking about them, wondering about your intentions."
I used twice as many complex reflections as simple reflections. Unfortunately, I should have used
many more complex reflections so there was two reflections for every question instead of the other
way around. In order to reflect the amount of fun she had with friends, I could have said, "It sounds
like you had a ton of fun just hanging out ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Instead of asking another open question of, "would you be ok with that?" I should have used a
complex reflection, "socializing, re–establishing old friendships and engaging in activities you once
enjoyed is an option that intrigues you." This may have been more effective at pushing toward those
feelings of why she really wants to be more social.
Summaries
Only a few summaries were offered throughout the interview and I did not end with a summary like
I had intended. The summary that reflected more change talk was, "you had a lot of fun, it made you
happy to go out and do things, go to the mountains, go to the bars, go to movies, just hang out with
friends, and you're telling me that all changed when you went into grad school and you believe you
used that as an excuse to not go out, do I have that right? I gave it back to the client, but did not end
on change talk. I should have switched it around, started with acknowledging how Sarah was using
grad school as an excuse and then I could have ended on change talk with all the reasons why she
enjoyed socializing in the past. Another improvement would have been to use more summaries
throughout the conversation. The final summary should have been, "you got to the point where grad
school was an excuse not to socialize, but now you are thinking more about how much you value
your friendships and

Reflection And Discernment
Reflection and Discernment in a Dynamic World
Reflection
Reflection is a careful thought about oneself, one's behaviour and one's beliefs. It means reviewing
past experiences and making insights about them. Reflection is like looking into the mirror and
saying what you see. ("Self reflection | Unison", 2017)
It is necessary, because it encourages personal growth. Reflection helps identify our mistakes and
how we can improve on them in the future. It also strengthens a person's emotional intelligence and
self–regulation, because during self–reflection, you have the opportunity of checking your strengths,
weaknesses, values, and goals and to also check your impact on the people around you. Self–
regulation involves being able to correct oneself and adapt to changing situations. This is the
building of a successful life. Reflection enables one to act with Integrity. This occurs as a result of
conscious effort, reviewing all the actions made and decisions taken and comparing them to the
values you hold in esteem would help you monitor and control yourself and slowly help you become
a person of integrity. Over time, reviewing and reflecting on your past will help you solidify the ...

If you have a friend that is known to be very loud and restless person, you know not to make that
person you study partner, because your goal of achieving an "A" may not be achieved. "A person
who is negative, puts people down, and carries around anger all the time has bad energy – we
choose not to spend time with them because it's simply not healthy for us. We don't have to tell other
people "that's a bad person". We know they aren't good for us and it will become self–evident for
others who use their discernment. [Discernment] gives us clear perception and the ability to make
good choices without having to be better or worse than anyone else." (Habash,

Role Play Reflection
This reflective essay will try and develop an understanding of the experiences and theory that has
been applied to a counselling roleplay and applied content over the duration of the module.
Furthermore, identifying what has been covered and what has not been covered in the roleplay, its
strengths, weaknesses, what needs developing and how it can help as counsellors within the field.
The first topic will reflect on the skills and attributes that have been applied to the roleplay and how
it has been beneficial. The second topic will be a critical analysis on the roleplay conducted during
counselling focusing on what techniques have not been covered, what skills and attributes were not
demonstrated in the roleplay. Then identifying how improving and applying these skills and
attributes may contribute to the overall effectiveness of counselling. The last topic will touch on
micro–skills such as summarizing and goal setting, its application to the role play looking at both
the strengths and weaknesses assessing why micro skills are important in the counselling practice.
This first topic will be a reflection of content that has been applied to and the strengths of the
roleplay. The very start of the therapy process from the point to meeting a client is very important to
engage the therapeutic alliance (Wener, et al., 2015, p. 312). A way to start engaging with the
alliance is by presenting an open and respectful manner to the client, during the role play this initial

Essay On Reflective Reflection
I was nominated for this course of study by the Criminology and Criminal Justice department at
Glyndwr University. Once receiving notification I was both pleasantly surprised and excited. This is
in–part due to my previous credentials which include professional experience in leadership roles in
the hospitality industry, beauty industry and welfare–to–work sector. Based on my working history,
the course is everything I expected it to be as I have always had a keen interest for gaining a better
understanding of myself and others. My only criticism, is that I personally feel I would have gained
more from the course by discussing the topics in more depth, therefore perhaps a course of longer
duration may have been more beneficial for me.
I have had the pleasure of meeting some really fascinating guest speakers, all of whom enthused an
infectious enthusiasm and passion for personal and business development through their insightful
and inspiring accounts. However, this essay will focus exclusively on providing a reflective
statement by making reference to the team working conducted via the group assignment and will
discuss the concepts most relevant to collaborative working and reflective practice. In addition, this
essay will seek to reflect upon individual preconceptions and supply recommendations for applying
theory to practice within my personal and professional life. This process involves utilising 'The
Model of Structured Reflection' (Driscoll, 2007) on which the very

Kasey Rivera Reflection
According to Ray Kroc, "The quality of a leader is reflected in the standards they set for
themselves". As developing leaders, do we reflected the same standards we set upon ourselves to
other? I thought I knew Kasey Rivera before asking others about her. The reflection that people saw
of Kasey was different from what she was seeing. On the surface, Kasey Rivera is an eighteen year
old college pursuing her bachelor's degree in order to success in the future. However, there is more
than just a college student in her whether it is from my perspective or others.
Strength
I view Kasey Rivera as a girl who as came a long way from what she was to who she is now. She is
not the same student that she was from high school to this present day. The process of the
construction of her true potential brings enthusiasm in Kasey. Rivera sees herself as a good leader
from the different involvement throughout her life. She has been a hardworking leader and always
have the words to communicate with others. Kasey Rivera is a go–getter and not afraid to step out of
an environment's comfort zone. Her interpersonal communicational skills and people oriented focus
drives her due to her drive to improve on her leadership skills.
Weakness
On the other hand, Kasey Rivera has her flaws. Rivera's enthusiasm to improve herself comes with
stubbornness to change. She is very sensitive to feedback she receives. The sensitive emotions do
not teach her that she has to put her stubborn away. Her angry gets Kasey's best at times. She
portrays herself as lay back and lazy when in reality she is not. Rivera is does not take some or all
jokes at her lightly. Her short tempter gets the best of her and takes things out of proportions and
simply takes everything too seriously. Kasey Rivera clear mission on the future frighten her at times.
She is scared that she would not achieve her goals and dreams or disappoint others.
Affiliation
The idiom "Birds of a feather flock together" is a phrase associated with affiliation. People who
have the same taste and interests are usually found together. Kasey Rivera affiliate herself with
people who are dedicated in education much like herself. She is associated with leaders in the
making as she is a part of

Reflection On The Word ' Reflection '
For me the word 'reflection' means taking time to really dig deep into my thoughts, to contemplate
something meaningful and significant, to make a decision that often involves me and my future. It
has a personal and emotional connection. Daudelin (1996) uses the word 'reflection' to encourage
managers to create time to recognise the value of learning from past and current work situations
('experience') and to adapt this learning to new situations. I would prefer to choose the words
'thought' or 'consideration' when applying the idea of reflection to my own work environment. To fix
my thoughts on what I have learned or to carefully consider how to approach a problem would, for
me, be a better fit. I might, however, choose to reflect on how the past year has been or to reflect on
the direction the organisation is taking, but not, as Daudelin suggests, bring the word into every day
use.
Boud et al. (1985) suggest that we can't learn from experience alone and ask the questions: What
transforms experience into learning? What enables learners to profit from the situations they find
themselves in? How does experience relate to new situations?
Daudelin (1996, 39) offers a definition of reflection that catches its relation to learning:
Reflection is the process of stepping back from an experience to ponder, carefully and persistently,
its meaning to the self through the development of inferences; learning is the creation of meaning
from past or current events that serves as a

Capstone Of Reflection
Reflecting on the Journey
Throughout my two semesters in CommSkills 1015 and 1016, I have learned a lot, and developed
academically. The countless essays and speeches have helped me to become a better writer, and
speaker. Prior to my time in CommSkills, I would write without a goal. I would sit down and words
would go down on paper, but they never truly accomplished the goals that I had while writing.
Through attention to MAP, attention to detail and practice I have come a long way. The Integrative
Learning Rubric is a way of measuring how well students can use the knowledge they acquire from
their studies in real life. Throughout my year in CommSkills, I have greatly developed my ability to
reflect and self assess. When I started at Virginia ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is also important that you are able to see these strengths and weaknesses in aspects of your life
outside of writing papers and speeches. Once I realized why I struggled with procrastination, I was
able to take advantage of it. I knew that I would always prefer to be doing something active so I
used this knowledge to get a lot of hours in volunteering with the Special Olympics. Instead of
procrastinating by going for a run or to the gym, I went to special olympics events on tuesdays and
thursdays. I was not required to do more than ten hours of service work for class, but once I started I
truly could not stop. I loved and still love, taking the time to support people with disabilities, but it
did not only help them. I always leave Special Olympics events with a refreshed perspective on life.
It puts into perspective both your happiness and the daily struggles we all face. If my friends at
Special Olympics bowling can come every week with a smile on their face and put their best foot
forward, so can I. We all face our own problems in life and working with the Special Olympics
always redefines my concept of what is possible and what is

The Importance Of Reflection
All professionals will find that reflecting on the way they carry out their work can help them
improve the quality of their skills. This is even more important in work involving a continual
increase in understanding, such as fields with ongoing research like osteopathy. ("Ncor" 2017)
Reflecting has become a necessary skill for those in healthcare who want to provide the highest
level of care they can for their patients. It has been proposed that reflection is a more meaningful
method of learning than formal teaching. (Jasper 2003) This essay will question that statement;
briefly describe how to reflect and will contrast the benefits and drawbacks.
Reflection process:
In a healthcare setting reflection is the process of critiquing one's experiences by analysing them
based on the relevant literature. (Reid 1993) Professor Graham Gibbs provides a 6 stage process that
can be followed: (Gibbs' 1988)
Description – simply describe what has happened. It can be useful to describe the experience in the
most matter of fact way so that it can be examined clearly.
Feelings – explain how the incident made you feel.
Evaluation – explain what was good and/or bad about the incident. This will help in identifying
what areas need additional study.
Analysis – what understanding do you have of the incident? This step is crucial in developing skill
but can also be the most challenging. This step requires the practitioner being able to look at the
experience objectively. The nature of being self–critical is that it comes easier to some than it does
for others. Someone with a large ego may have a lot of trouble with this stage but to truly reflect
they will need to learn to be able to criticise themselves. Reflection without critical analysis has
little value as it will serve to mask weak areas of knowledge (Kralik, 2005)
Conclusion – decide whether you could have done anything else.
Action plan – using the knowledge gained from the previous stages prepare for if the situation arises
again.
Strengthening through reflection:
The osteopathic standards (OPS) are put in place to ensure a high standard of care is carried out by
all UK osteopaths. B4 of the OPS states that professional knowledge and skills must be kept up

Movie Reflection
So with the release of Stan Lee's latest anime. There has been plenty of mixed opinions on whether
this new series is good or bad. The series I am talking about is THE REFLECTION!! Normally, I
would wait until the third episode to give a proper analysis, but considering the hate for this anime
seems to be very mixed. I'll try to give some sort of middle ground on the topic. Ladies and
Gentlemen, as always, I am The Gentleman Snark. Now let's take a look at THE REFLECTION and
figure out; Is it that bad? ....Well...
Warning: Maybe some spoilers
Basic Premise:
THE REFLECTION overall story is pretty basic and easy to understand. 3 years ago a mysterious
green light and smoke enveloped the planet. There had appeared to be many casualties during the
incidents, but soon survivors of the event soon realized they received super powers. So as many
people would expect, people that have discovered their new found powers will either turn to a life of
crime or a life of Heroism. The event in question is called The Reflection and the people that have
been infected are called reflectors.
Characters and story:
I won't waste time give a big recap of the two episode as they are pretty simple and easy to
understand. Episode 1 we get introduced to two heroes in action fighting off some of the bad guys.
The two Hero are X–On and I–guy. A reporter of sort named Eleanor Everts seems to have an
obsession with Xon and tries to stalk him. She also has the power of teleportation and she has felt

Reflective Reflection Essay
Different theories and ways of practising exist for counsellors, with reflective practice becoming
more popular amongst practitioners. Dallos, & Stedmon (2009) state that for professionals working
directly with people, such as counsellors, reflective practice has quickly developed into a
fundamental component of training, and the best practice for creating successful outcomes. This
essay will focus on how reflective practice is critical for professional life, and how the use of
reflection and theory can be used by counselling practitioners to inform their practice. Reflective
practice is a complex concept and has many alternate definitions and understandings of what
reflective practice actually means. By breaking down the two parts and ... Show more content on

Geldard, Geldard, & Yin Foo (2017) recognise that reflective practice can also help the counsellor
prevent exhaustion or 'burnout' in the work place. From the use of some simple questions about how
they are feeling, and by reflecting on their practice, counsellors can stop exhaustion before it occurs.
Wheatley (2002, cited in Bassot, 2016) proposes that "without reflection, we go blindly on our own
way, creating more unintended consequences, and failing to achieve anything useful" (p.1). In other
words, reflection can help the counsellor learn from their mistakes, and the consequences of these
mistakes, in order to move forward and achieve more positive and successful outcomes for their
clients. Additionally, reasoning for the recent increase in popularity could be that reflection in
practice helps counsellors to identify and deconstruct the clients thoughts and assumptions rather
than just focusing on the narrative of their story (Hickson, 2011). It is now becoming apparent why
reflective practice is becoming more popular amongst the counselling profession and is a critical
component to professional life. Dallos, & Stedmon (2009) argue that in order for reflection in
practice to be achieved, the counsellor must see reflection as a consecutive process of assessing and
reassessing relevant events or incidents, and evaluating the outcomes to learn from past experiences.
Simply questioning past events and incidents can help counsellors

My Reflection

Colorado Christian University
My Reflection August 28, 2017, the first day of my fresh and scary journey. My first day as a
Colorado Christian University student, English composition online is my first class. Part of me is
ready; part of me is ready to throw in the towel. I hadn't even had a chance to turn a paper in, and
the first assignment, a 5–paragraph essay had me thinking "you're a crazy person for going back to
school, it's been 11 years since you had to write a paper. What are you thinking?" I told myself its 5
weeks (later I would realize actually 6) you can make it 5 weeks! Although I knew writing wouldn't
be my easiest subject, I knew I had to try my hardest. This class was condensed and hard, but
effective and informative; I've learned so much, felt all sorts of emotions and know I can apply what
I've learned in classes to come. When I reflect back on this class, I'm grateful for what I've learned. I
can't imagine starting the online college experience with a different class. I imagine what that would
have been like, and I can't help but think, it would have been rough and I wouldn't have some of the
basic resources needed. APA formatting, I didn't have the slightest idea what that meant. Learning
the basics on APA will ensure I have a great skill moving forward to write my papers during college.
Citing properly, although I'm still working on this, I would have been even further behind. If I didn't

Reflection In Considering Stones
All our knowledge begins with the senses, proceeds then to the understanding, and ends with reason.
There is nothing higher than reason. There two ways of gaining knowledge which are direct
observation and reflection. Observation is a fundamental way of finding out about the world around
us. The key elements of learning through observation are seeing and listening attentively to
whatsoever one is observing. Reflection is replicating what one sees and listens while observing. It
involves describing everything you can see out of your window. Reflection involves linking a
current experience to previous learning's as reflecting on experiences encourages insight and
complex learning. We foster our own growth when we control our learning, so some ... Show more

Marilyn Bisch is a keen observer and has reflected upon his observation insightfully. The
observation is set in Rome about an common artisan fixing cobblestones which are placed in the
stone buildings. The author was living a normal day. He had no purpose in mind to observe anything
in particular. While the author was walking on the streets of Rome looking at the inscriptures and
sculptures, sconces and windowsills, he suddenly looked at the irregular cobblestones and then
turned towards the person who was fixing it and improving its shape. The author started seeing what
the artisan was doing. There was no communication that took place during the observation. The
author was listening attentively to the sound of the hammer. Having observed, he realizes the true
value of a common artisan. He wants to thank them as they are the reason behind maintaining the
beauty of Rome. The sound of the hammer is like music to him now. Through this writing, the
author has reflected upon it really well. As by observing, learning has taken place. The author
discovered and learnt the unknown. He has given his opinions and ideas on his observation. He even

Mirror Reflection
Who is the boy I see in the mirror? He is over–weighted, unsuccessful, paranoid, and insecure. It
was a grotesque reflection of myself and a visualization of a loser. So I was frequently scared to
confront my true–self in the mirror and ignored my fundamental problem. When I devoured three
plates of lasagna and every sip of the cream soup that would add another pound of fat and flesh to
my stomach, "you should control your eating habits," "stopped" were two of the many concerned
advice that I commonly heard in a daily basis. But all of them did not understand what I was going
through. People always said that the scoops of ice cream and a stack of waffles were the problem for
me, but it was more than what meets the eye for my situation.
The stacking piles of homework and the mean test scores that always ignored the effort I put in gave
me so much frustration and stress. To overcome all this, I always found myself reflected in the
mirror holding a melting chocolate bar in my one hand and my pencil on the other, sitting next to a
pile of snacks. However, as the weight gauge points to a new higher number everyday, I got more
stress from the humiliating number and the thoughts of others judging my appearance that led me to
opening another candy bar. It was a vicious cycle.
"I look horrible," "My grades are terrible." These were some of the words that always flew around
my mind when passing by other people in school. However, I always covered all these depression

Reflection On Reflection-In-Action
Reflection is considered as a vital element of professional practice as it precedes to insight and then
subsequent change in practice. The hypothesis of reflection is not new as it can be tracked as far
back in the 5th century by the influential Greek philosopher, Socrates and to the 1930s primarily
focusing on John Dewey's work. Dewey is one of the founders of learning from experience. He
theorised reflection as 'active, persistent and careful consideration' (Dewey, 1933) initiated by a
specific situation which was opposing, perplexing or uncertain. One of its most common use today
is coming up with a thought, an idea, or opinion made or an observation made as a result of
concentration, suggesting in essence a way of thinking in which one looks back and meditate upon
(Agnes, 2004).
In 1938, Donald Schon's The Reflective Practitioner: How Professionals Think in Action was
published. He promoted two types of reflection, which he referred to as 1) reflection–on–action and
2) reflection–in–action (Somerville and Keeling, 2004). Reflection–on–action is the most common
used reflection among practitioners. It involves constantly re–accounting what happened in the past.

Severtseen (1990) cited by Duxbury (2000) applies the term 'therapeutic communication' as the
dialogue between nurse and patient to achieve goals tailored exclusively to the patients needs. In this
case dialogue is used by Mr. Comer in the form of body language and noise to communicate his
needs because of speech loss.
Nelson–Jones (1990) states that facial expressions are an intrinsic way to express emotions and eye
contact is one way to show interest. The avoidance in eye contact displayed by Mr. Comer showed
his distinct lack of interest. Compounding these factors was his facial paralysis, which made it
especially difficult for me to ascertain the exact nature of his feelings.
The nurse must be the sender and more importantly the receiver of clear information. Patients with
speech impairment or loss have a more difficult task sending the messages they want and are
sometimes unsuccessful in making themselves understood. (Arnold & Boggs 1995).
It appeared to me that Mr. Comer's cough was not only a physiological disorder caused by his
condition, but a way for him to communicate, in this case, his displeasure. Critical analysis of this
experience has pointed to the fact that I have inadequacies in my skills, to identify covert and overt
clues provided by Mr. Comer to his needs. I had focussed too much on the presenting task to feed

Following Johns Model of Structured Reflection
For this reflective piece I am going to write about a situation I encountered whilst on my community
placement with the district nurse. To write the essay I will be following "Johns model of structured
reflection" as a basis to structure my reflection around.
Johns Model of Structured Reflection (Johns 1998)
1.Write a description of the experience. Ask yourself:
* 'What are the significant issues I need to pay attention to? '
Whilst on my community placement for one of my initial spokes, I arranged to spend the morning
with the district nurse on her rounds, to gain an insight into her role within the community and find
out first hand exactly what her job entails. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
3.Personal: ask your self:
– 'How did I feel in this situation? '
– 'What internal factors were influencing me? '
During the whole situation from the moment we pulled up out side the house I was very nervous and
wanting to give a good impression only made this worse. Once we had entered the house and met
Tom I calmed down a little. I was surprised at my own reaction of distaste when I entered the house
and encounter a grumpy drunk so early in the morning; I had no prior knowledge of his situation
(Claire later informed me that his wife had recently divorced him and he was having difficulties
coping).
When Claire asked me to do the drops I declined, at the time I was annoyed with myself for missing
the opportunity to practice my clinical skills.
4.Ethics: ask yourself:
– 'Did my actions match with my beliefs? '
– 'What factors made me act in incongruent ways? '
In refection my actions did not match the beliefs I held about myself before coming on community.
From my time on my ward placements I thought I had built up a good professional attitude and
could work my way around difficult situations. What I was not prepared for was how much; the lack
of familiar surroundings would affect my actions and how nervous I felt about giving a good
impression to Claire and the patients.
The main factors that made me act in such a way were, nervousness, lack of confidence and

I had to collaborate and co–ordinate with two co–students to organise this session. The logistical
aspects like the room to conduct the session, the positioning of the table were decided with a keen
focus on the client's comfort and ease to record. The choice of art materials were based on my
client's preference. My client was insistent on including palettes of left over paint from the studio,
various sizes of paper, thread, tracing paper and marker pens for the session. To open the session, I
use open questions, paraphrasing and reflecting (McLeod, 2013), like, "What did you want to talk
about today" (p1, 0.14). One example early on in the session of paraphrasing and reflecting content
is, "So you are really overwhelmed............manage your priorities for your assignment" (p1, 0.44). It
was through paraphrasing and reflecting content, I was able to infer that my client felt anxious about
prioritising her study commitments, is sleep deprived and feeling frustrated around managing time.
Feelings I found setting the stage phase particularly challenging, as I had to accommodate the
opinion of two other co–students. I recall feeling restricted, but decided to go with the flow to get
the recording finished. I also recall wondering if the materials that I sourced were enough. I also

Reflection On Learning In Education
Russell (2013) discusses the education of student teachers in depth, and supports Hebert's idea
(2015) that reflections must be taught in conjunction with practical experience and that the two must
be connected in order to lead the student to a higher level of understanding about their teaching.
However, Russell (2013) also examines that reflection can lead to the wrong course of action if the
practitioner misjudges the situation. So, in proceeding with different courses of action, there is the
chance that there will be a counterproductive outcome if you choose the wrong way of acting. If you
look at the impact this has on learning and on the child, it could be construed as a negative
consequence of reflection. In the case of special needs children, it is difficult to measure what the
lasting damage of an ill–conceived course of action would have on the child.
Russell (2013) analyses Zeichner's assertions (1996) that reflection on your own teaching is limited
when you are training to be a teacher because you are more likely to observe and learn from more
experienced teachers. Only when you have finished your training and begin working can you start to
gain experience and begin to bridge the gap between theory and practice.
Wegner et al ((2014) looked at Korthagen's ALACT model (1999) in their article which deals with
making improvements in teaching. They discuss the relevance of reflective competence which

Reflective Essay
This essay will look at reflection on a critical incident that has promoted a positive outcome. It is not
a very major incident but it stands out as it has a potential for learning. This essay will identify and
explain Johns' (1994) model of reflection and explain what reflection is and why reflective practice
is necessary and how it can be used. Schone (1983) recommended reflection on critical incidence as
a valuable term, sited in Ghaye and Lillyman (1997) a critical incident id defined as
'incidence happen, but critical incidence are produced by the way we look at a situation, it is an
interpretation of significance of the event.' (p.8)
Polit and Hungler (1999) defined a critical incident as:
'... an observable and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They say that models of reflection help us to learn from experiences, help us overcome professional
inertia by asking us to look at what we do. They tend to add more meaning to our clinical practice
through reflective conversations and influence future actions.
John's model (1994) is a model of guided reflection, this enables reflective practitioners to access,
make sense of and learn through experiences. It consists of a series of questions, which are split into
five groups. Description, reflection, influencing factors, alternative strategies and learning.
In choosing John's model (1994) there seems to be such a wide range of cues that it enables every
aspect of the critical incident to be thought about, described, questioned, feelings are brought about
while exploring many issues.
Due to confidentiality the names of the people in this critical incident have been changed due to the
Code of Professional Conduct (1992).

Reflection On Professional Development
In this short essay my own personal view on professional development will be made evident through
reviewing past experiences, allowing recommendations for better practice to occur. Other topics
discussed and analysed will be; the structure of the organisation, the effectiveness on leadership and
management. My own role within the organisational structure will be reflected on, considering the
impact of skills in practice, further, justifying what I will need for future personal and professional
development.
Reflective practice is an important tool, as people learn from their own professional experiences
(Pascal and Brown, 2009). Reflection provides opportunity for furthering personal and professional
development (Nganga, 2011). As it helps to certify knowledge skills and experience that is used
within practice (Freire, 1972).
Boud, Keogh and Walker (1985) states that, looking through past and present experiences helps with
progression in the future. The reflection on practice is finding the weaknesses and overcoming them
(Dyer and Taylor, 2012).
Johns (2000) situates that a number of models can help to structure a reflection. As they provide a
framework that helps develop a deeper understanding and analysis. One reflective model is Schön
(2002) the model of reflection–in–action and reflection–on–action. This model is beneficial to use as
it involves working on getting to the bottom of what is happening in the experience process, such as;
the decisions made and the feelings felt at that time of the event. Reflection–on–action involves
looking over the event and drawing on professional knowledge to understand what happened and
why it happened and to develop deeper knowledge (Thompson and Pascal, 2012). However, this is
not the only model that could be used. Other models such as Kolb (1984), Gibbs (1988) and
Brookfield (1995) have different frameworks to help breakdown an issue.
I like to use Schön (2002) model in the workplace as I am thinking about what I am doing as I am
doing it. This does not provide a lot of time to think in depth and to break the event down, leading to
not gaining a better understanding of what happened, without this I have no targets to better my
professional development.

Reflection Of A Mirror
Where does one see the most real physical you? The best example I could find is a mirror, and your
reflection.
The reflection in a mirror changes the instant life does, it blinks so fast that you can't catch it, it
stares only when you look at it, and turns its back on you the moment you do. The mirror only holds
life when someone stands before it, without oneself it serves no purpose, its one and only purpose
was to tell you, through reflection, what you look like. Without having the little lies or falsehoods
that those nearest you tend to tell you about the way you look.
These falsehoods are often caught, and brought to reality by painters and other reflective surfaces.
Whilst they may be true to the artist or surface, they are not accurate, ... Show more content on

When we look at ourselves in the mirror we must be critical, we must look at ourselves as if it is not
we who is looking back, because we lie to ourselves as well, and sometimes the truth, although
unpleasant might be the only thing to set us back on the right path.
"[A] sort of dehiscence opens my body in two, and because between my body looked at and my
body looking, my body touched and my body touching, there is overlapping or encroachment, so
that we may say that the things pass into us as well as we into the things." (Merleau–Ponty
1964/1969: 123)
It is therefore when we look at ourselves without preconceived notions, or small, little euphemisms,
that we learn the most about who we really are. The mirror can reveal so much of our lives, it can
tell you everything that you allow yourself to listen to, it can tell you about the reason there is
sadness or fear in your eyes, or why your skin is rough and full of calluses. Our bodies are our
physical vessels; they merely hold and protect our minds. However, the way in which you treat your
body changes the relationship between the body and the

Personal Reflection
Throughout my educational life, I found it hard to be able to form new writing based on readings or
other course material we were given. In college, I started becoming more willing to create these
papers because that's what our main focus was. Revising was always simpler for me because I could
see my mistakes and create new ideas based on my initial ones. During English 201 I feel like I
blossomed as a writer and reviser when creating writing based on course materials we were given.
Since critical notebook one, every step of writing has become familiar and even easy to accomplish
because of the guidelines provided by the instructor. I noticed a pattern of our writing system during
this course which was; we would read a paper having to do with politics and patriotism, then we
would start by summarizing and analyzing that material, next we would construct and a summary
and reflection of that paper. When starting this course I was first given a reading called, "Real
Patriots Ask Questions." As I was reading this paper we were to analyze and take notes in the
margin about our thoughts and reflections. This process was helpful because when we started our
essays about the reading, we could look back at our notes and re–read our initial thoughts. Next, we
started our essays and constructed a rough draft which contained the content, but I couldn't find the
right groove when writing that first draft. This brings me to our next steps which were revising that
first draft. We

Reflective Reflection
For the last six weeks in both mental and acute setting, I have reflected on events that I had met in
each week. Now, I am going to identify essential personal learning outcomes from those events and
will include personal awareness of strengths and weaknesses. Among the different models of
reflection, I will use the Gibbs model of reflection which entails six stages such as description,
feelings, evaluation, analysis, conclusion, action plan.
Description
In the past six weeks while I was on placement, I was able to critically reflect on my performance on
a weekly basis. I was able to pin–point my own practises that breached the infection control protocol
such as forgetting to put–on gloves when I administered intramuscular injection as well as not
wearing the personal protective equipment when entering into the room for a contact precaution
patient. Some situations not only gave me an opportunity to learn from others but also to seek
feedback to improve my communication skills especially in providing health education to
indigenous patients. Lastly, there were instances that my critical thinking was challenged and I was
able to prevent an event that could endanger a patient's life by advocating for the patient.
Feelings
In every situation I have met, there was always a positive and some negative emotions. Sometimes I
got anxious when my facilitator was around while doing health education to a patient and also got
nervous that it makes my hands shake when I administered an

My Reflection Of Me
I don't know about you, but I don't often star at myself in the mirror, studying my own face. Does
anybody? The longest amount of time I spend looking at myself is when I'm shaving, and even then,
I'm just concentrating on not being a klutz and cutting myself open. I'm not being down on myself or
looking for attention or any such nonsense like that. I mean, I don't even have a Facebook. It's just
that, gazing upon my reflection is just not something I do. I get out of the shower, I shave, brush my
teeth, and I'm gone, on to whatever the day has in store for me. Another thing I'm not used to is the
clarity of the face.
I should back up a moment, so you understand. I have, for the better part of a month, been having a
recurring dream that unsettles me. In it, I am staring at myself in a mirror and it is devoid of the
dream–quality one expects from the images in their brain. In dreams, whenever I see someone who
is supposed to be me or someone I have known for years, the face is different, sometimes subtly,
other times it is completely different. But in this mirror, in this reflection that comes through in my
reverie, it is my face, perfectly so, no blur or changes or oddly shaped parts. The eyes are the same
dull blue that they've always been, my nose, slightly long but not weirdly so, although there is a
curve at the bridge where I broke it falling from my bike when I was twelve. My ears are normal
looking, my eyebrows a tad bushy but otherwise fine with no unibrow,

Reflection On Self Development Through Reflection
Self–development through reflection is a key issue of education and learning (Kennison, 2012),
where you learn through experience (Tashiro, Shimpuku, Naruse and Matsutani, 2013), learn to
self–evaluate (Duffy, 2013), identify gaps in knowledge and detect where further training or study is
required to improve practice (Olarerin, 2013). Ultimately reflection is thought to be constant
learning from practice, thus refining knowledge and experiences and putting them into practice
(Naidoo, 2013).
Within my reflection examples (Appendix 1) I recognised where my knowledge and experience was
lacking, through self–evaluation. For instance when completing an electrocardiogram (ECG). I
learned through my extra reading, how completing an ECG incorrectly could cause the patient to
require un–necessary treatment (Houghton, 2014). Through my extra study I was able to learn where
exactly where the electrodes are positioned on the body for an accurate EGC tracing to be produced
(Crawford and Doherty, 2012; University of Nottingham, 2015). I used this knowledge throughout
my placement and I am now confident in conducting ECG's in my future practice. In achieving self–
development in this example I linked my learning directly to my practice (Ross, 2014), where I
developed a fundamental skill and expanded my knowledge for my continued development in my
nursing career and practice (Aronson, 2011).

Throughout my time on the Mother Baby Care Unit, I have faced many instances in which I have
been able to reflect on both my patients and the care that I was providing them. One situation in
particular that I found myself critically reflecting upon involved a new mother who was feeling
slightly stressed about being discharged as her newborn son would not be going home with her. For
confidentiality reasons, this patient will be given the pseudonym of Kayla for the remainder of this
reflection. Kayla and I met on the morning of her discharge while she was finishing packing up her
belongings. At this time, I completed her final set of vital signs and began to talk with her about
going home. As I spoke about this topic, I noticed that Kayla was becoming slightly stressed as her
voice sounded a little shaky and she was increasingly restless. I then proceeded to interpret why she
could be feeling this way to which I realized that as Kayla has yet to be more than one hospital zone
away from her son and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), she was likely feeling quite
uneasy about going home. Like any mother with a sick child, she did not want to leave her son's side
during this tough time and by being discharged, Kayla may have felt that a part of her would no
longer be with him. Subsequent to forming this interpretation, I moved on and responded to Kayla's
stress by encouraging her to engage in self–care during this difficult time. As the actions taken

Reflection-In-Action Vs Reflection In Action
Reflection–in–action and reflection–on–action are similar but yet different in some ways.
Reflection–in–action is reflecting on the work being done while the individual is doing the action
and the decisions being made while the action is being done. Reflection–on–action is the reflection
after the action has been done to analyze if the action was successful or unsuccessful (Reflection,
2010). Furthermore, and while in practice 111, we will apply reflective practice as we work with
clients to reflect on their problems, goals, and motivations. Reflecting will allow the social worker
and the client to understand what is causing the problem, how the problem occurred, and ways in
which the problem can be resolved. During practice 111 students will participate in an evidence–
based planned–change project that will involve students to accompany a client, assess the client,
identify goals, intervention, and evaluation. Through ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The challenges include being too descriptive, writing style, honesty, and disclosure (Reflection,
2010). The challenge of being too descriptive involves being too descriptive when talking about one
stage in the assessment while not elaborating on the other. Additionally, the writing style of an
individual becomes a challenge as the writing needs to be both personalized and a style of academic
writing, which can become challenging. Another challenge that arises in reflective writing is
honesty. Honesty becomes a challenge in reflective writing, as the student may feel obligated to
think a certain way or conform to a set of morals or beliefs due to it being academic writing. Lastly,
a challenge in reflective writing is disclosure. Disclosure presents as a challenge in reflective writing
as the individual being assessed may feel pressured to open up when they do not feel comfortable
out of the fear of being judged. All of these challenges can alter the assessment

The Importance Of Reflection In Nursing
As higher standards expected are from the public and higher patient safety demands are expected
from health boards, therefore, there is a need for a way of measuring standards of practice which can
be achieved through active thinking in a clinical environment brought about by critical reflection
(Rolfe, Jasper & Freshwater 2011). Reflection has become such a key component in the role of a
nurse that the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) have seen it fit to include it in their
professional code of conduct the Code: Professional Standards of Practice and Behaviour for Nurses
and Midwives, hereafter referred to as the Code (Nursing & Midwifery Council [NMC], 2015).
With reflection being a vital skill for nurses to continue their professional development (Parrish &
Crookes, 2013), an analysis of what it means to reflect within nursing is needed by all who intend to
enter the profession to ensure its effective use is applied. This essay will look at what reflection in
nursing looks like, why we use reflection as a tool, what are the outcomes of reflecting, how we
reflect effectively and what skills are needed. Then, using an experience within practice, a reflective
model will be used to analyse a critical incident relating to consent. In accordance with the
confidentiality measure within 'The code' (NMC, 2015) and to abide by the Data Protection Act
1998, no information will be provided which could allude to the identity of anyone within the
critical incident, thus pseudonyms will be used where appropriate. According to Howston–Jones
(2013) reflection is not something that is out of the ordinary for everyone to do in their everyday
lives. Reflection is the act of looking back on a situation, event or incident critically and making
sense of it to learn from it and alter our actions to gain better outcomes should the same incident
arise again (Capelhow, Crouch, Fisher & Walsh, 2013). As new experiences happen to everyone,
everyday; it would be right to consider reflection as an ongoing process within everyone's life, a
process that is repeated, honed and a skill to be developed (McKenna, 1998). Reflection is a tool
that is used within many disciplines including teaching and within the legal profession

Performing the Insite workbook activities, I analysed and reflected on my personal strengths and
weaknesses and drew up a development plan to help me.
The reflective models I use most are Gibb 's Model of Reflection: Learning by doing (1988) and
Rolfe et al. (2001). Gibb's reflective model is a six–stage cycle analysing an event from what
happened to what the action plan is. This allows for a good analysis of the event/problem and what
needs to be done to improve. Rolfe's reflective model is a three–stage model and has been identified
as a good toolkit when used in reflective practice. It is also good for both novice and advanced
practitioners (Bishop and Blake, 2007).
Gibb's and Rolfe's models have common insights, namely the description of the event, analysis of
what has occurred and the action plan.
Rolfe's three–step model begins with What? This is the entire description of the event occurring.,
The second step involves the practitioner constructing personal theories and knowledge about the
situation by asking So What? The practitioner asks what they have learnt from the situation, what
impact does it have on them, e.g. leadership skills, etc. what could they change to make it better and
what broader issues have been highlighted by the event? The third step is Now What? This is the
action plan for the reflection where the practitioner

Reflective Reflection
The British Association of Occupational Therapists (2007) states that reflective practice is
fundamental in continuing professional development (CPD) in order to keep skills and knowledge
up to date and to practice effectively, safely and legally (Health and Care Professions Council,
2012). Reflection is vital for all healthcare students in order to establish links between theory and
practice (Jasper, 2013), that will help increase clinical reasoning and enhance professional practice
(Rigby et al., 2012). Using models of reflective thinking makes sure that reflections are meaningful
to our personal CPD (Armitage et al., 2012).
Models of reflective thinking are designed to aid us reflectively. Each models varies in how much
information, description, evaluation and critical analysis are needed. The most commonly used
models in healthcare are; Gibbs, Kolb and Borton. In order to choose a reflective model an
individual must firstly know what they want to achieve and how in–depth they want to go with their
reflection (Jasper, 2013).
For this reflection I have chosen Gibbs' (1988) model to help me understand my role, actions and
behaviours throughout my group work sessions with my Personal Professional Development (PPD)
group and explore and evaluate the interactions with the multi–disciplinary team (MDT) during the
research of a patient care pathway. The reasons for choosing Gibbs' model is that it is clear and

be reading all the novels assigned, or reading a summary of the book. A book which could stand out
to them would be "The Death of Ivan Ilych" written by Leo Tolstoy. This is a novel on how a man's
life, and how he died. Ivan Ilych, from a very young age, was always worried about his social
standpoint. He gained knowledge in the works of government and became a lawyer. His work

Persuasive Discourse Reflection
During my time at DePauw I've been to all four Day of Dialogue sessions and have seen it evolve
from a response to brother Jed's protest to an organized annual event that aims to bring students,
faculty, and staff together to discuss campus climate and personal experiences at DePauw. However,
while this event has made progress in choosing speakers, facilitating productive conversations, and
providing topical breakout sessions, many students still feel frustrated due to unproductive
conversations that left out many groups that experience bias on campus. Most importantly, many
students feel that these days do little to address these issues on campus, that they don't have a chance
to be heard, and that one day of dialogue is not enough to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

What particularly resonated with me about Leslie Williams' speech was the discussion about
uncomfortable conversations about privilege and recognizing our own biases. By describing her
personal experiences, Leslie Williams emphasized that students of color, LGBTQIA+ students,
disabled students, and others often feel uncomfortable and isolated because of their identities.
Although many students feel uncomfortable speaking about these topics, admitting that we are
privileged, and recognizing that we grow up with different biases, other students feel this discomfort
every day and aren't able to escape it after Day of Dialogue ends. Although I often feel
uncomfortable admitting my own privilege, I think it is important to acknowledge that some of us
have the privilege to avoid these awkward conversations when they make us uncomfortable while
other students have to live with this discomfort every day. Avoiding these conversations not only
limits our capacity for change, but also our own understanding of how our identities are shaped by
society. Though uncomfortable, these are necessary conversations that push us to reflect on our own
experiences, admit our own biases, and have effective conversations in order to create more equality
on campus. These same themes of acknowledging privilege and the importance of stories were
emphasized during the breakout session with Peggy McIntosh: From

I also notified my clinical instructor of the situation in case he would be required to do anything in

could have made her experience with being admitted even more difficult than it already must have
been. I also gathered that Betty might have felt uneasy seeing someone she knew working on the
unit, as she likely did not know about the concept of patient confidentiality and how I would not be
able to tell anyone that she was admitted. Reflecting after this interaction with Betty allowed me to
realize that I did the right thing refusing to care for her in order to uphold the standards of
maintaining professional boundaries and providing ethical care. I was also reassured that I did the
right thing when I asked my clinical instructor to work on the other side of the unit as a result of
hearing that Betty, who was a voluntary admission, wanted to be discharged because she saw that I
was working on the unit. I decided to take this approach to the situation because I wanted to respect
her privacy as well as allow her to begin working towards improving her mental health, which she

Benefits Of Reflection On Healthcare
2.4 Benefits of Reflection in Healthcare
For the practitioner, the benefits of reflection includes the identification of learning needs, continual
development in practice, the ability to provide evidence–based care and the elimination of routine
practice (Jasper et al. 2011 and Bulman 2013). Furthermore, as part of the NMC (2015) code of
professional standard and a significant component of the revalidation process, reflective nurses do
not only fulfil the regulatory requirements, but to some extent, safeguard the success of their
revalidation process.
As a result of the practitioner's development and use of reflection, patients benefit by receiving
better quality of individualised care, evidence–based practice from their specific needs and better
standards of patient safety including a reduction in the number of adverse incidents (Jasper et al.
2011). This essentially represents the use and respect of the Code in practice (NMC 2015).
Also, the affirmation of best practice, considered by Driscoll (2007) to be one of the benefits of
reflection, results in a higher standard in quality of care and a good reputation for professional
practice (Jasper et al. 2011). This brings significant benefits to both the NHS as an employer and the
nursing profession.

direct practice have a purpose: to help improve clients' lives. Even though both of these types of
practice are effective in achieving this goal, I find micro practice to be more effective in changing
the lives of clients for the better. This year may have opened me up to the idea of macro practice, but

situation. Through conducting this case study, I learned the importance of being objective with
clients in diverse settings. We also did a case study where we were each required to conduct an

Brookfield Critical Reflection
One thing that was really emphasized in this class is critical reflection. According to Brookfield
critical reflection is "the process of analyzing, reconsidering and questioning experiences within a
broad context of issues". This is necessary for anyone working in a people centered job or in human
services. Critical reflection allows us to tackle our assumptions and actions and address where this
comes from. There are 3 different phases of the critical reflection process. The first is
deconstruction. This is where we take the case or moment apart, this where we deconstruct our
attitudes surrounding the circumstances. The next step is resistance and challenge. This is where we
ask why and what this means. The last step is reconstruction. In this step we put together everything
that we have learned from this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Before actively learning about critical reflection, I did not understand how important it is to develop
this skill. With my previous work in SDMA or as a mentor, I did complete some type of critical
reflection but it was more large scale at the end of large periods of time. I found this reflection was
not very helpful because of at it was not as useful at the end of the semester or at the mid point of
semester. I think this is because it is more helpful after every interaction because then it is the best
way to address all of these interactions. As a mentor, it's important to really pay attention to my
interactions with my mentees because this is the basis of my relationship with them. There are a lot
of times of when I need to deconstruct my feelings and attitudes. This is often the case for my
mentees, with them being only a year younger and the growth of our relationship, there are some
interactions that I look back at and think I maybe should not have had done or said some of the
things I did do. This is me deconstructing these interactions, the attitudes that I had, were not
appropriate for this

Reflection
Reflection on your personal development Reflection is a major factor in "developing self–
awareness" to improve services provided to everyone around me, this is to develop my own
understanding in realising the good and bad made previously. Moving forward with a better
understanding, as well as rectifying the mistake whilst recognizing the good points, (Horton–
Deutsch and Sherwood, 2008).
Working in a domiciliary setting and visiting vulnerable adults within their homes, I am constantly
trying to provide a better service and care towards them and this is where reflection is crucial as this
improves the quality of my job performance, providing me with a learning curve for the future.
Since starting the course there have been many ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Jackson and Thurgate, (2011) have stated PDP plan and a SWOT analysis "enables support workers
to focus their workplace activities on achieving structured and achievable goals" this will help

Reflecting on time management is important due to the service users well–being and so Bach and
Ellis (2011) have mentioned that in order to progress further, I need to achieve time framed tasks,
valuing the importance of time is vital to developing better time management. Leading me to build
confidence gradually and this also helps me work well within a team. Partaking in small group
meetings to encourage my communication, linking theory to practice, also thinking before speaking,
positive attitude with good breathing techniques will assist in better confidence within myself for
future in practice and in university.
At work, there are policies and procedures in place, if any incident occurs and there are also self–
evaluation forms and reflective supervisions with the manager every three months in order to be
able to reflect on ourselves in practice. While in practice a service user had to wait for a while
before we could attend to him because of miscommunication between the multidisciplinary team.
This short falling could have been avoided,

Peer Reflection on Counseling Video

  • 1. Peer Reflection Peer Reflection Report For my peer reflection assignment, I chose to review a video posted by Lana Pachuca. I chose her video because I have watched most of my classmates videos over the past few weeks, however this was the first week I was able to watch one of hers. Also, her counseling session was focusing on helping a client deal with coping skills for anxiety and I was interested in seeing the outcomes of the client using the coping skills over the course of a week. I felt that Lana did a great job of demonstration how to use reflection of content back to the client. For example, Lana asked her client how the past week of using the coping skills turned out for her, and Lana was able to clearly articulate how the client was successful at ... Although I believe that I have some natural abilities that can be considered helping skills in counseling, I have learned that I have some strengths that can be refined and continually strengthened, while those skills that I am naturally weak in can be the skills that I focus on developing through practice and research. For example, I know that I do well with making people feel comfortable by exhibiting an open posture, while attending to them with relevant open–ended questions. On the other end, I struggle with using various sentence stems when reflecting back emotions and content to the client. I also found myself struggling at times clearly communicating directions to interventions that I would like for a client to try during a counseling session. It was an enlightening experience to be able to watch my classmates learn and grow in developing their counseling skills and techniques too. I felt like we are all able to not only learning from one another but have the opportunity to engage in some of the modeling techniques we learning about in the behavioral interventions section of our text (Hackney & Cormier, ... • 5. Reflection Reflections Both simple and complex reflections were used. A simple reflection used towards the beginning of the interview transpired into, "pretty active out doing a lot of things." Alternatively, a complex reflection used when reflecting on Sarah's feelings about what her friends think about her not socializing subsisted of, "it bothers you thinking about them, wondering about your intentions." I used twice as many complex reflections as simple reflections. Unfortunately, I should have used many more complex reflections so there was two reflections for every question instead of the other way around. In order to reflect the amount of fun she had with friends, I could have said, "It sounds like you had a ton of fun just hanging out ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Instead of asking another open question of, "would you be ok with that?" I should have used a complex reflection, "socializing, re–establishing old friendships and engaging in activities you once enjoyed is an option that intrigues you." This may have been more effective at pushing toward those feelings of why she really wants to be more social. Summaries Only a few summaries were offered throughout the interview and I did not end with a summary like I had intended. The summary that reflected more change talk was, "you had a lot of fun, it made you happy to go out and do things, go to the mountains, go to the bars, go to movies, just hang out with friends, and you're telling me that all changed when you went into grad school and you believe you used that as an excuse to not go out, do I have that right? I gave it back to the client, but did not end on change talk. I should have switched it around, started with acknowledging how Sarah was using grad school as an excuse and then I could have ended on change talk with all the reasons why she enjoyed socializing in the past. Another improvement would have been to use more summaries throughout the conversation. The final summary should have been, "you got to the point where grad school was an excuse not to socialize, but now you are thinking more about how much you value your friendships and ... • 9. Reflection And Discernment Reflection and Discernment in a Dynamic World Reflection Reflection is a careful thought about oneself, one's behaviour and one's beliefs. It means reviewing past experiences and making insights about them. Reflection is like looking into the mirror and saying what you see. ("Self reflection | Unison", 2017) It is necessary, because it encourages personal growth. Reflection helps identify our mistakes and how we can improve on them in the future. It also strengthens a person's emotional intelligence and self–regulation, because during self–reflection, you have the opportunity of checking your strengths, weaknesses, values, and goals and to also check your impact on the people around you. Self– regulation involves being able to correct oneself and adapt to changing situations. This is the building of a successful life. Reflection enables one to act with Integrity. This occurs as a result of conscious effort, reviewing all the actions made and decisions taken and comparing them to the values you hold in esteem would help you monitor and control yourself and slowly help you become a person of integrity. Over time, reviewing and reflecting on your past will help you solidify the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Role Play Reflection This reflective essay will try and develop an understanding of the experiences and theory that has been applied to a counselling roleplay and applied content over the duration of the module. Furthermore, identifying what has been covered and what has not been covered in the roleplay, its strengths, weaknesses, what needs developing and how it can help as counsellors within the field. The first topic will reflect on the skills and attributes that have been applied to the roleplay and how it has been beneficial. The second topic will be a critical analysis on the roleplay conducted during counselling focusing on what techniques have not been covered, what skills and attributes were not demonstrated in the roleplay. Then identifying how improving and applying these skills and attributes may contribute to the overall effectiveness of counselling. The last topic will touch on micro–skills such as summarizing and goal setting, its application to the role play looking at both the strengths and weaknesses assessing why micro skills are important in the counselling practice. This first topic will be a reflection of content that has been applied to and the strengths of the roleplay. The very start of the therapy process from the point to meeting a client is very important to engage the therapeutic alliance (Wener, et al., 2015, p. 312). • 17. Essay On Reflective Reflection I was nominated for this course of study by the Criminology and Criminal Justice department at Glyndwr University. Once receiving notification I was both pleasantly surprised and excited. This is in–part due to my previous credentials which include professional experience in leadership roles in the hospitality industry, beauty industry and welfare–to–work sector. Based on my working history, the course is everything I expected it to be as I have always had a keen interest for gaining a better understanding of myself and others. My only criticism, is that I personally feel I would have gained more from the course by discussing the topics in more depth, therefore perhaps a course of longer duration may have been more beneficial for me. I have had the pleasure of meeting some really fascinating guest speakers, all of whom enthused an infectious enthusiasm and passion for personal and business development through their insightful and inspiring accounts. However, this essay will focus exclusively on providing a reflective statement by making reference to the team working conducted via the group assignment and will discuss the concepts most relevant to collaborative working and reflective practice. In addition, this essay will seek to reflect upon individual preconceptions and supply recommendations for applying theory to practice within my personal and professional life. This process involves utilising 'The Model of Structured Reflection' (Driscoll, 2007) on which the very ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. Kasey Rivera Reflection According to Ray Kroc, "The quality of a leader is reflected in the standards they set for themselves". As developing leaders, do we reflected the same standards we set upon ourselves to other? I thought I knew Kasey Rivera before asking others about her. The reflection that people saw of Kasey was different from what she was seeing. On the surface, Kasey Rivera is an eighteen year old college pursuing her bachelor's degree in order to success in the future. However, there is more than just a college student in her whether it is from my perspective or others. Strength I view Kasey Rivera as a girl who as came a long way from what she was to who she is now. She is not the same student that she was from high school to this present day. The process of the construction of her true potential brings enthusiasm in Kasey. Rivera sees herself as a good leader from the different involvement throughout her life. She has been a hardworking leader and always have the words to communicate with others. Kasey Rivera is a go–getter and not afraid to step out of an environment's comfort zone. Her interpersonal communicational skills and people oriented focus drives her due to her drive to improve on her leadership skills. Weakness On the other hand, Kasey Rivera has her flaws. Rivera's enthusiasm to improve herself comes with stubbornness to change. She is very sensitive to feedback she receives. The sensitive emotions do not teach her that she has to put her stubborn away. Her angry gets Kasey's best at times. She portrays herself as lay back and lazy when in reality she is not. Rivera is does not take some or all jokes at her lightly. Her short tempter gets the best of her and takes things out of proportions and simply takes everything too seriously. Kasey Rivera clear mission on the future frighten her at times. She is scared that she would not achieve her goals and dreams or disappoint others. Affiliation The idiom "Birds of a feather flock together" is a phrase associated with affiliation. People who have the same taste and interests are usually found together. Kasey Rivera affiliate herself with people who are dedicated in education much like herself. She is associated with leaders in the making as she is a part of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Reflection On The Word ' Reflection ' For me the word 'reflection' means taking time to really dig deep into my thoughts, to contemplate something meaningful and significant, to make a decision that often involves me and my future. It has a personal and emotional connection. Daudelin (1996) uses the word 'reflection' to encourage managers to create time to recognise the value of learning from past and current work situations ('experience') and to adapt this learning to new situations. I would prefer to choose the words 'thought' or 'consideration' when applying the idea of reflection to my own work environment. To fix my thoughts on what I have learned or to carefully consider how to approach a problem would, for me, be a better fit. I might, however, choose to reflect on how the past year has been or to reflect on the direction the organisation is taking, but not, as Daudelin suggests, bring the word into every day use. Boud et al. (1985) suggest that we can't learn from experience alone and ask the questions: What transforms experience into learning? What enables learners to profit from the situations they find themselves in? How does experience relate to new situations? Daudelin (1996, 39) offers a definition of reflection that catches its relation to learning: Reflection is the process of stepping back from an experience to ponder, carefully and persistently, its meaning to the self through the development of inferences; learning is the creation of meaning from past or current events that serves as a ... The countless essays and speeches have helped me to become a better writer, and speaker. Prior to my time in CommSkills, I would write without a goal. I would sit down and words would go down on paper, but they never truly accomplished the goals that I had while writing. Through attention to MAP, attention to detail and practice I have come a long way. • 33. The Importance Of Reflection All professionals will find that reflecting on the way they carry out their work can help them improve the quality of their skills. This is even more important in work involving a continual increase in understanding, such as fields with ongoing research like osteopathy. ("Ncor" 2017) Reflecting has become a necessary skill for those in healthcare who want to provide the highest level of care they can for their patients. It has been proposed that reflection is a more meaningful method of learning than formal teaching. (Jasper 2003) This essay will question that statement; briefly describe how to reflect and will contrast the benefits and drawbacks. Reflection process: In a healthcare setting reflection is the process of critiquing one's experiences by analysing them based on the relevant literature. (Reid 1993) Professor Graham Gibbs provides a 6 stage process that can be followed: (Gibbs' 1988) Description – simply describe what has happened. It can be useful to describe the experience in the most matter of fact way so that it can be examined clearly. Feelings – explain how the incident made you feel. Evaluation – explain what was good and/or bad about the incident. This will help in identifying what areas need additional study. Analysis – what understanding do you have of the incident? This step is crucial in developing skill but can also be the most challenging. This step requires the practitioner being able to look at the experience objectively. The nature of being self–critical is that it comes easier to some than it does for others. Someone with a large ego may have a lot of trouble with this stage but to truly reflect they will need to learn to be able to criticise themselves. Reflection without critical analysis has little value as it will serve to mask weak areas of knowledge (Kralik, 2005) Conclusion – decide whether you could have done anything else. Action plan – using the knowledge gained from the previous stages prepare for if the situation arises again. Strengthening through reflection: The osteopathic standards (OPS) are put in place to ensure a high standard of care is carried out by all UK osteopaths. B4 of the OPS states that professional knowledge and skills must be kept up ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 37. Movie Reflection So with the release of Stan Lee's latest anime. There has been plenty of mixed opinions on whether this new series is good or bad. The series I am talking about is THE REFLECTION!! Normally, I would wait until the third episode to give a proper analysis, but considering the hate for this anime seems to be very mixed. I'll try to give some sort of middle ground on the topic. Ladies and Gentlemen, as always, I am The Gentleman Snark. Now let's take a look at THE REFLECTION and figure out; Is it that bad? ....Well... Warning: Maybe some spoilers Basic Premise: THE REFLECTION overall story is pretty basic and easy to understand. 3 years ago a mysterious green light and smoke enveloped the planet. There had appeared to be many casualties during the incidents, but soon survivors of the event soon realized they received super powers. So as many people would expect, people that have discovered their new found powers will either turn to a life of crime or a life of Heroism. The event in question is called The Reflection and the people that have been infected are called reflectors. Characters and story: I won't waste time give a big recap of the two episode as they are pretty simple and easy to understand. Episode 1 we get introduced to two heroes in action fighting off some of the bad guys. The two Hero are X–On and I–guy. A reporter of sort named Eleanor Everts seems to have an obsession with Xon and tries to stalk him. She also has the power of teleportation and she has felt ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Dallos, & Stedmon (2009) state that for professionals working directly with people, such as counsellors, reflective practice has quickly developed into a fundamental component of training, and the best practice for creating successful outcomes. This essay will focus on how reflective practice is critical for professional life, and how the use of reflection and theory can be used by counselling practitioners to inform their practice. Reflective practice is a complex concept and has many alternate definitions and understandings of what reflective practice actually means. By breaking down the two parts and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Geldard, Geldard, & Yin Foo (2017) recognise that reflective practice can also help the counsellor prevent exhaustion or 'burnout' in the work place. From the use of some simple questions about how they are feeling, and by reflecting on their practice, counsellors can stop exhaustion before it occurs. Wheatley (2002, cited in Bassot, 2016) proposes that "without reflection, we go blindly on our own way, creating more unintended consequences, and failing to achieve anything useful" (p.1). In other words, reflection can help the counsellor learn from their mistakes, and the consequences of these mistakes, in order to move forward and achieve more positive and successful outcomes for their clients. Additionally, reasoning for the recent increase in popularity could be that reflection in practice helps counsellors to identify and deconstruct the clients thoughts and assumptions rather than just focusing on the narrative of their story (Hickson, 2011). It is now becoming apparent why reflective practice is becoming more popular amongst the counselling profession and is a critical component to professional life. Dallos, & Stedmon (2009) argue that in order for reflection in practice to be achieved, the counsellor must see reflection as a consecutive process of assessing and reassessing relevant events or incidents, and evaluating the outcomes to learn from past experiences. Simply questioning past events and incidents can help counsellors ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

My first day as a Colorado Christian University student, English composition online is my first class. Part of me is ready; part of me is ready to throw in the towel. I hadn't even had a chance to turn a paper in, and the first assignment, a 5–paragraph essay had me thinking "you're a crazy person for going back to school, it's been 11 years since you had to write a paper. What are you thinking?" I told myself its 5 weeks (later I would realize actually 6) you can make it 5 weeks! Although I knew writing wouldn't be my easiest subject, I knew I had to try my hardest. This class was condensed and hard, but effective and informative; I've learned so much, felt all sorts of emotions and know I can apply what I've learned in classes to come. When I reflect back on this class, I'm grateful for what I've learned. I can't imagine starting the online college experience with a different class. I imagine what that would have been like, and I can't help but think, it would have been rough and I wouldn't have some of the basic resources needed. APA formatting, I didn't have the slightest idea what that meant. Learning the basics on APA will ensure I have a great skill moving forward to write my papers during college. There two ways of gaining knowledge which are direct observation and reflection. Observation is a fundamental way of finding out about the world around us. So I was frequently scared to confront my true–self in the mirror and ignored my fundamental problem. When I devoured three plates of lasagna and every sip of the cream soup that would add another pound of fat and flesh to my stomach, "you should control your eating habits," "stopped" were two of the many concerned advice that I commonly heard in a daily basis. But all of them did not understand what I was going through. People always said that the scoops of ice cream and a stack of waffles were the problem for me, but it was more than what meets the eye for my situation. The stacking piles of homework and the mean test scores that always ignored the effort I put in gave me so much frustration and stress. To overcome all this, I always found myself reflected in the mirror holding a melting chocolate bar in my one hand and my pencil on the other, sitting next to a pile of snacks. However, as the weight gauge points to a new higher number everyday, I got more stress from the humiliating number and the thoughts of others judging my appearance that led me to opening another candy bar. It was a vicious cycle. "I look horrible," "My grades are terrible." These were some of the words that always flew around my mind when passing by other people in school. • 57. Reflection On Reflection-In-Action Reflection is considered as a vital element of professional practice as it precedes to insight and then subsequent change in practice. The hypothesis of reflection is not new as it can be tracked as far back in the 5th century by the influential Greek philosopher, Socrates and to the 1930s primarily focusing on John Dewey's work. Dewey is one of the founders of learning from experience. He theorised reflection as 'active, persistent and careful consideration' (Dewey, 1933) initiated by a specific situation which was opposing, perplexing or uncertain. One of its most common use today is coming up with a thought, an idea, or opinion made or an observation made as a result of concentration, suggesting in essence a way of thinking in which one looks back and meditate upon (Agnes, 2004). In 1938, Donald Schon's The Reflective Practitioner: How Professionals Think in Action was published. He promoted two types of reflection, which he referred to as 1) reflection–on–action and 2) reflection–in–action (Somerville and Keeling, 2004). Reflection–on–action is the most common used reflection among practitioners. It involves constantly re–accounting what happened in the past. Severtseen (1990) cited by Duxbury (2000) applies the term 'therapeutic communication' as the dialogue between nurse and patient to achieve goals tailored exclusively to the patients needs. In this case dialogue is used by Mr. Comer in the form of body language and noise to communicate his needs because of speech loss. Nelson–Jones (1990) states that facial expressions are an intrinsic way to express emotions and eye contact is one way to show interest. The avoidance in eye contact displayed by Mr. Comer showed his distinct lack of interest. Compounding these factors was his facial paralysis, which made it especially difficult for me to ascertain the exact nature of his feelings. The nurse must be the sender and more importantly the receiver of clear information. Patients with speech impairment or loss have a more difficult task sending the messages they want and are sometimes unsuccessful in making themselves understood. (Arnold & Boggs 1995). It appeared to me that Mr. Comer's cough was not only a physiological disorder caused by his condition, but a way for him to communicate, in this case, his displeasure. Critical analysis of this

The logistical aspects like the room to conduct the session, the positioning of the table were decided with a keen focus on the client's comfort and ease to record. The choice of art materials were based on my client's preference. My client was insistent on including palettes of left over paint from the studio, various sizes of paper, thread, tracing paper and marker pens for the session. To open the session, I use open questions, paraphrasing and reflecting (McLeod, 2013), like, "What did you want to talk about today" (p1, 0.14). One example early on in the session of paraphrasing and reflecting content is, "So you are really overwhelmed............manage your priorities for your assignment" (p1, 0.44). It was through paraphrasing and reflecting content, I was able to infer that my client felt anxious about prioritising her study commitments, is sleep deprived and feeling frustrated around managing time. Feelings I found setting the stage phase particularly challenging, as I had to accommodate the opinion of two other co–students. I recall feeling restricted, but decided to go with the flow to get the recording finished. I also recall wondering if the materials that I sourced were enough. • 75. Reflection On Learning In Education Russell (2013) discusses the education of student teachers in depth, and supports Hebert's idea (2015) that reflections must be taught in conjunction with practical experience and that the two must be connected in order to lead the student to a higher level of understanding about their teaching. However, Russell (2013) also examines that reflection can lead to the wrong course of action if the practitioner misjudges the situation. So, in proceeding with different courses of action, there is the chance that there will be a counterproductive outcome if you choose the wrong way of acting. If you look at the impact this has on learning and on the child, it could be construed as a negative consequence of reflection. In the case of special needs children, it is difficult to measure what the lasting damage of an ill–conceived course of action would have on the child. Russell (2013) analyses Zeichner's assertions (1996) that reflection on your own teaching is limited when you are training to be a teacher because you are more likely to observe and learn from more experienced teachers. Only when you have finished your training and begin working can you start to gain experience and begin to bridge the gap between theory and practice. It is not a very major incident but it stands out as it has a potential for learning. This essay will identify and explain Johns' (1994) model of reflection and explain what reflection is and why reflective practice is necessary and how it can be used. Schone (1983) recommended reflection on critical incidence as a valuable term, sited in Ghaye and Lillyman (1997) a critical incident id defined as 'incidence happen, but critical incidence are produced by the way we look at a situation, it is an interpretation of significance of the event.' They say that models of reflection help us to learn from experiences, help us overcome professional inertia by asking us to look at what we do. They tend to add more meaning to our clinical practice through reflective conversations and influence future actions. John's model (1994) is a model of guided reflection, this enables reflective practitioners to access, make sense of and learn through experiences. It consists of a series of questions, which are split into five groups. Description, reflection, influencing factors, alternative strategies and learning. In choosing John's model (1994) there seems to be such a wide range of cues that it enables every aspect of the critical incident to be thought about, described, questioned, feelings are brought about while exploring many issues. • 89. Reflection On Professional Development In this short essay my own personal view on professional development will be made evident through reviewing past experiences, allowing recommendations for better practice to occur. Other topics discussed and analysed will be; the structure of the organisation, the effectiveness on leadership and management. My own role within the organisational structure will be reflected on, considering the impact of skills in practice, further, justifying what I will need for future personal and professional development. Reflective practice is an important tool, as people learn from their own professional experiences (Pascal and Brown, 2009). Reflection provides opportunity for furthering personal and professional development (Nganga, 2011). As it helps to certify knowledge skills and experience that is used within practice (Freire, 1972). Boud, Keogh and Walker (1985) states that, looking through past and present experiences helps with progression in the future. The reflection on practice is finding the weaknesses and overcoming them (Dyer and Taylor, 2012). Johns (2000) situates that a number of models can help to structure a reflection. As they provide a framework that helps develop a deeper understanding and analysis. One reflective model is Schön (2002) the model of reflection–in–action and reflection–on–action. This model is beneficial to use as it involves working on getting to the bottom of what is happening in the experience process, such as; the decisions made and the feelings felt at that time of the event. Reflection–on–action involves looking over the event and drawing on professional knowledge to understand what happened and why it happened and to develop deeper knowledge (Thompson and Pascal, 2012). However, this is not the only model that could be used. Other models such as Kolb (1984), Gibbs (1988) and Brookfield (1995) have different frameworks to help breakdown an issue. I like to use Schön (2002) model in the workplace as I am thinking about what I am doing as I am doing it. This does not provide a lot of time to think in depth and to break the event down, leading to not gaining a better understanding of what happened, without this I have no targets to better my professional development. ... The reflection in a mirror changes the instant life does, it blinks so fast that you can't catch it, it stares only when you look at it, and turns its back on you the moment you do. The mirror only holds life when someone stands before it, without oneself it serves no purpose, its one and only purpose was to tell you, through reflection, what you look like. I noticed a pattern of our writing system during this course which was; we would read a paper having to do with politics and patriotism, then we would start by summarizing and analyzing that material, next we would construct and a summary and reflection of that paper. When starting this course I was first given a reading called, "Real Patriots Ask Questions." As I was reading this paper we were to analyze and take notes in the margin about our thoughts and reflections. This process was helpful because when we started our essays about the reading, we could look back at our notes and re–read our initial thoughts. Next, we started our essays and constructed a rough draft which contained the content, but I couldn't find the right groove when writing that first draft. This brings me to our next steps which were revising that first draft. We ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 101. Reflective Reflection For the last six weeks in both mental and acute setting, I have reflected on events that I had met in each week. Now, I am going to identify essential personal learning outcomes from those events and will include personal awareness of strengths and weaknesses. Among the different models of reflection, I will use the Gibbs model of reflection which entails six stages such as description, feelings, evaluation, analysis, conclusion, action plan. Description In the past six weeks while I was on placement, I was able to critically reflect on my performance on a weekly basis. I was able to pin–point my own practises that breached the infection control protocol such as forgetting to put–on gloves when I administered intramuscular injection as well as not wearing the personal protective equipment when entering into the room for a contact precaution patient. Some situations not only gave me an opportunity to learn from others but also to seek feedback to improve my communication skills especially in providing health education to indigenous patients. Lastly, there were instances that my critical thinking was challenged and I was able to prevent an event that could endanger a patient's life by advocating for the patient. Feelings In every situation I have met, there was always a positive and some negative emotions. Sometimes I got anxious when my facilitator was around while doing health education to a patient and also got nervous that it makes my hands shake when I administered an ... • 105. My Reflection Of Me I don't know about you, but I don't often star at myself in the mirror, studying my own face. Does anybody? The longest amount of time I spend looking at myself is when I'm shaving, and even then, I'm just concentrating on not being a klutz and cutting myself open. I'm not being down on myself or looking for attention or any such nonsense like that. I mean, I don't even have a Facebook. It's just that, gazing upon my reflection is just not something I do. I get out of the shower, I shave, brush my teeth, and I'm gone, on to whatever the day has in store for me. Another thing I'm not used to is the clarity of the face. I should back up a moment, so you understand. I have, for the better part of a month, been having a recurring dream that unsettles me. In it, I am staring at myself in a mirror and it is devoid of the dream–quality one expects from the images in their brain. In dreams, whenever I see someone who is supposed to be me or someone I have known for years, the face is different, sometimes subtly, other times it is completely different. But in this mirror, in this reflection that comes through in my reverie, it is my face, perfectly so, no blur or changes or oddly shaped parts. The eyes are the same dull blue that they've always been, my nose, slightly long but not weirdly so, although there is a curve at the bridge where I broke it falling from my bike when I was twelve. My ears are normal looking, my eyebrows a tad bushy but otherwise fine with no unibrow, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 109. Reflection On Self Development Through Reflection Self–development through reflection is a key issue of education and learning (Kennison, 2012), where you learn through experience (Tashiro, Shimpuku, Naruse and Matsutani, 2013), learn to self–evaluate (Duffy, 2013), identify gaps in knowledge and detect where further training or study is required to improve practice (Olarerin, 2013). Ultimately reflection is thought to be constant learning from practice, thus refining knowledge and experiences and putting them into practice (Naidoo, 2013). Within my reflection examples (Appendix 1) I recognised where my knowledge and experience was lacking, through self–evaluation. For instance when completing an electrocardiogram (ECG). I learned through my extra reading, how completing an ECG incorrectly could cause the patient to require un–necessary treatment (Houghton, 2014). Through my extra study I was able to learn where exactly where the electrodes are positioned on the body for an accurate EGC tracing to be produced (Crawford and Doherty, 2012; University of Nottingham, 2015). I used this knowledge throughout my placement and I am now confident in conducting ECG's in my future practice. In achieving self– development in this example I linked my learning directly to my practice (Ross, 2014), where I developed a fundamental skill and expanded my knowledge for my continued development in my nursing career and practice (Aronson, 2011). • 113. Nursing Reflection Throughout my time on the Mother Baby Care Unit, I have faced many instances in which I have been able to reflect on both my patients and the care that I was providing them. One situation in particular that I found myself critically reflecting upon involved a new mother who was feeling slightly stressed about being discharged as her newborn son would not be going home with her. For confidentiality reasons, this patient will be given the pseudonym of Kayla for the remainder of this reflection. Kayla and I met on the morning of her discharge while she was finishing packing up her belongings. At this time, I completed her final set of vital signs and began to talk with her about going home. As I spoke about this topic, I noticed that Kayla was becoming slightly stressed as her voice sounded a little shaky and she was increasingly restless. I then proceeded to interpret why she could be feeling this way to which I realized that as Kayla has yet to be more than one hospital zone away from her son and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), she was likely feeling quite uneasy about going home. Like any mother with a sick child, she did not want to leave her son's side during this tough time and by being discharged, Kayla may have felt that a part of her would no longer be with him. Subsequent to forming this interpretation, I moved on and responded to Kayla's stress by encouraging her to engage in self–care during this difficult time. As the actions taken during self–care can ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 117. Reflection-In-Action Vs Reflection In Action Reflection–in–action and reflection–on–action are similar but yet different in some ways. Reflection–in–action is reflecting on the work being done while the individual is doing the action and the decisions being made while the action is being done. Reflection–on–action is the reflection after the action has been done to analyze if the action was successful or unsuccessful (Reflection, 2010). Furthermore, and while in practice 111, we will apply reflective practice as we work with clients to reflect on their problems, goals, and motivations. Reflecting will allow the social worker and the client to understand what is causing the problem, how the problem occurred, and ways in which the problem can be resolved. During practice 111 students will participate in an evidence– based planned–change project that will involve students to accompany a client, assess the client, identify goals, intervention, and evaluation. The challenge of being too descriptive involves being too descriptive when talking about one stage in the assessment while not elaborating on the other. Additionally, the writing style of an individual becomes a challenge as the writing needs to be both personalized and a style of academic writing, which can become challenging. Another challenge that arises in reflective writing is honesty. Honesty becomes a challenge in reflective writing, as the student may feel obligated to think a certain way or conform to a set of morals or beliefs due to it being academic writing. Lastly, a challenge in reflective writing is disclosure. Disclosure presents as a challenge in reflective writing as the individual being assessed may feel pressured to open up when they do not feel comfortable out of the fear of being judged. • 121. The Importance Of Reflection In Nursing As higher standards expected are from the public and higher patient safety demands are expected from health boards, therefore, there is a need for a way of measuring standards of practice which can be achieved through active thinking in a clinical environment brought about by critical reflection (Rolfe, Jasper & Freshwater 2011). Reflection has become such a key component in the role of a nurse that the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) have seen it fit to include it in their professional code of conduct the Code: Professional Standards of Practice and Behaviour for Nurses and Midwives, hereafter referred to as the Code (Nursing & Midwifery Council [NMC], 2015). With reflection being a vital skill for nurses to continue their professional development (Parrish & Crookes, 2013), an analysis of what it means to reflect within nursing is needed by all who intend to enter the profession to ensure its effective use is applied. This essay will look at what reflection in nursing looks like, why we use reflection as a tool, what are the outcomes of reflecting, how we reflect effectively and what skills are needed. Then, using an experience within practice, a reflective model will be used to analyse a critical incident relating to consent. In accordance with the confidentiality measure within 'The code' (NMC, 2015) and to abide by the Data Protection Act 1998, no information will be provided which could allude to the identity of anyone within the critical incident, thus pseudonyms will be used where appropriate. According to Howston–Jones (2013) reflection is not something that is out of the ordinary for everyone to do in their everyday lives. Reflection is the act of looking back on a situation, event or incident critically and making sense of it to learn from it and alter our actions to gain better outcomes should the same incident arise again (Capelhow, Crouch, Fisher & Walsh, 2013). As new experiences happen to everyone, everyday; it would be right to consider reflection as an ongoing process within everyone's life, a process that is repeated, honed and a skill to be developed (McKenna, 1998). Reflection is a tool that is used within many disciplines including teaching and within the legal profession ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It elaborates upon how and why recognizing your strengths and weaknesses are important and how they can enhance lifelong learning. It describes what arguments and assertions are, what the differences are between them and which one is better. Debnath describes reflection as a means of self–examination to learn from knowledge and experiences which will help transform a person 's reactions and behaviours to similar events in the future. (Debnath, 2010) Schön explains reflection can be used at two different times: reflection–in–action and a reflection– on–action. Reflection–in–action is where a person reflects ... The reflective models I use most are Gibb 's Model of Reflection: Learning by doing (1988) and Rolfe et al. (2001). Gibb's reflective model is a six–stage cycle analysing an event from what happened to what the action plan is. This allows for a good analysis of the event/problem and what needs to be done to improve. Rolfe's reflective model is a three–stage model and has been identified as a good toolkit when used in reflective practice. It is also good for both novice and advanced practitioners (Bishop and Blake, 2007). Gibb's and Rolfe's models have common insights, namely the description of the event, analysis of what has occurred and the action plan. Rolfe's three–step model begins with What? This is the entire description of the event occurring., The second step involves the practitioner constructing personal theories and knowledge about the situation by asking So What? The practitioner asks what they have learnt from the situation, what impact does it have on them, e.g. leadership skills, etc. what could they change to make it better and what broader issues have been highlighted by the event? The third step is Now What? This is the action plan for the reflection where the practitioner ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 129. Reflective Reflection The British Association of Occupational Therapists (2007) states that reflective practice is fundamental in continuing professional development (CPD) in order to keep skills and knowledge up to date and to practice effectively, safely and legally (Health and Care Professions Council, 2012). Reflection is vital for all healthcare students in order to establish links between theory and practice (Jasper, 2013), that will help increase clinical reasoning and enhance professional practice (Rigby et al., 2012). Using models of reflective thinking makes sure that reflections are meaningful to our personal CPD (Armitage et al., 2012). Models of reflective thinking are designed to aid us reflectively. Each models varies in how much information, description, evaluation and critical analysis are needed. The most commonly used models in healthcare are; Gibbs, Kolb and Borton. In order to choose a reflective model an individual must firstly know what they want to achieve and how in–depth they want to go with their reflection (Jasper, 2013). For this reflection I have chosen Gibbs' (1988) model to help me understand my role, actions and behaviours throughout my group work sessions with my Personal Professional Development (PPD) group and explore and evaluate the interactions with the multi–disciplinary team (MDT) during the research of a patient care pathway. The reasons for choosing Gibbs' model is that it is clear and precise which allows for description, analysis and evaluation ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

They start to spend more time with friends and family, striving to make as many memories as they can. They also look back on all the academic challenges they overcame. One of which would be reading all the novels assigned, or reading a summary of the book. A book which could stand out to them would be "The Death of Ivan Ilych" written by Leo Tolstoy. This is a novel on how a man's life, and how he died. Ivan Ilych, from a very young age, was always worried about his social standpoint. Right before he died, he tried to fix his relationship between him and his family by telling them he loves them. This can also be seen as a warning, warning seniors to make memories while they can and to act in a way they will not regret. In the novel, it states, "Ivan Ilych's life had been most simple and most ordinary and therefore most terrible," (Ch. 2). However, while this event has made progress in choosing speakers, facilitating productive conversations, and providing topical breakout sessions, many students still feel frustrated due to unproductive conversations that left out many groups that experience bias on campus. Most importantly, many students feel that these days do little to address these issues on campus, that they don't have a chance to be heard, and that one day of dialogue is not enough to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... What particularly resonated with me about Leslie Williams' speech was the discussion about uncomfortable conversations about privilege and recognizing our own biases. By describing her personal experiences, Leslie Williams emphasized that students of color, LGBTQIA+ students, disabled students, and others often feel uncomfortable and isolated because of their identities. Although many students feel uncomfortable speaking about these topics, admitting that we are privileged, and recognizing that we grow up with different biases, other students feel this discomfort every day and aren't able to escape it after Day of Dialogue ends. Although I often feel uncomfortable admitting my own privilege, I think it is important to acknowledge that some of us have the privilege to avoid these awkward conversations when they make us uncomfortable while other students have to live with this discomfort every day. Avoiding these conversations not only limits our capacity for change, but also our own understanding of how our identities are shaped by society. Though uncomfortable, these are necessary conversations that push us to reflect on our own experiences, admit our own biases, and have effective conversations in order to create more equality on campus. I also notified my clinical instructor of the situation in case he would be required to do anything in response. I also gathered that Betty might have felt uneasy seeing someone she knew working on the unit, as she likely did not know about the concept of patient confidentiality and how I would not be able to tell anyone that she was admitted. Reflecting after this interaction with Betty allowed me to realize that I did the right thing refusing to care for her in order to uphold the standards of maintaining professional boundaries and providing ethical care. I was also reassured that I did the right thing when I asked my clinical instructor to work on the other side of the unit as a result of hearing that Betty, who was a voluntary admission, wanted to be discharged because she saw that I was working on the unit. • 145. Benefits Of Reflection On Healthcare 2.4 Benefits of Reflection in Healthcare For the practitioner, the benefits of reflection includes the identification of learning needs, continual development in practice, the ability to provide evidence–based care and the elimination of routine practice (Jasper et al. 2011 and Bulman 2013). Furthermore, as part of the NMC (2015) code of professional standard and a significant component of the revalidation process, reflective nurses do not only fulfil the regulatory requirements, but to some extent, safeguard the success of their revalidation process. As a result of the practitioner's development and use of reflection, patients benefit by receiving better quality of individualised care, evidence–based practice from their specific needs and better standards of patient safety including a reduction in the number of adverse incidents (Jasper et al. 2011). This essentially represents the use and respect of the Code in practice (NMC 2015). Also, the affirmation of best practice, considered by Driscoll (2007) to be one of the benefits of reflection, results in a higher standard in quality of care and a good reputation for professional practice (Jasper et al. 2011). This brings significant benefits to both the NHS as an employer and the nursing profession. 2.5 Limitations to Reflection Irrespective of the importance and benefits of reflection, Johns (2013), (inspired by Fay's (1987) identification of commitment as a prerequisite to reflection), used commitment to lay limitations ... According to Brookfield critical reflection is "the process of analyzing, reconsidering and questioning experiences within a broad context of issues". This is necessary for anyone working in a people centered job or in human services. Critical reflection allows us to tackle our assumptions and actions and address where this comes from. There are 3 different phases of the critical reflection process. The first is deconstruction. This is where we take the case or moment apart, this where we deconstruct our attitudes surrounding the circumstances. The next step is resistance and challenge. This is where we ask why and what this means. The last step is reconstruction. In this step we put together everything that we have learned from this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I think this is because it is more helpful after every interaction because then it is the best way to address all of these interactions. As a mentor, it's important to really pay attention to my interactions with my mentees because this is the basis of my relationship with them.
