1. TLC Reflection Paper
The Tukwut Leadership Circle has been one amazing experience after another
this past semester. Throughout high school I was constantly involved in student
government and campus clubs, I believed that in order to be a leader I must be
involved. The TLC showed me that in order to be a leader it is so much more than just
being an extrovert and being involved. I realized that leadership starts with identifying
what type of person you are yourself first. Then using your attributes to lead those
around you, there is not just one way to lead. This program has shown me that I do not
have to always be an extroverted leader. In high school I believed that a leader should
always take charge at the front, my semester in the TLC changed that view for me. I
now realize that being a leader can be shown in many ways, being a leader is
something that starts within each and every person. I learned that while I am a off the
chart extrovert, I can still have my introvert moments and be a successful leader. Before
the TLC I did not call myself an introvert, I didn't believe I could be both an extrovert and
introvert. I saw myself as a leader and felt that if I labeled myself as a introvert in any
way then others will not see me as a leader. After attending the TLC workshops and
events and meeting more studentsI realized that just because I was introverted doesn't
mean I cannot be a leader. The TLC workshops impacted me the most throughout my
experience, I enjoyed every guest speaker but it was the opportunity to meet others in
the workshops that truly impacted me. I come from a small town and was used to
hearing and seeing the same people every day for the first half of my life. Meeting so
many new people from all walks of life during the workshops was eye opening and one
of the best things I have gotten to experience.
2. I am proud to state that I have achieved my SMART goals for this semester in the
TLC. I have applied for an internship and should be hearing back sometime in the
spring semester. I have also attended all required campus engagement hours plus
some more hours.
My future is in nursing, the TLC was beneficial in preparing me for this field of
study. As a nurse I will be meeting many people from many walks of life and will be
required t know how to properly interact with them. I will need to be a civil and
professional leader to be a successful nurse. The TLC ideals can be related to my GEL
class, from the group projects we have been assigned to the leadership challenge we
have been assigned to read. In our groups we are put together with those unfamiliar
and it is up to us to create a environment we can all coexist within. The Leadership
Challenge has similar ideals to the TLC program in helping people understand what
leadership is and how each person can be a leader.
For my campus engagement hours I attended the Suicide Awareness showing of
Finding Dory, Glow it Up, Painting the Sunset, Math Lab tutorials and a Civility Cafe.
From attending these events I made many connections with students and faculty and
learned about how to understand others. For my civic engagement I attended and
volunteered at a surf competition, high school football games, refereed at a soccer
game, and mountain shadows fright night. Through attending and volunteering at these
events I got to experience how others can be leaders within their communities. Through
the TLC program I learned about mindfulness, etiquette and civility. I have began
implementing these three factors into my life by one conversation at a time with my
fellow classmates, professors and others in the community. Overall, the TlC has been
3. such a exciting opportunity for me to complete, it is a wonderful program and I am
blessed to have had the opportunity to complete it.
