What is Title I? 
· Title I is the nation’s largest federal ($$) 
assistance program for schools 
· Short for Title I, Part A of the Elementary and 
Secondary Education Act of 1965. 
Reauthorized by the No Child Left Behind 
Act 2001.
What is the goal of Title I? 
O The goal of Title I is to help every child get a 
high-quality education.
What types of programs are 
provided through Title I funds? 
More teachers and programs – 
O At Hawthorne Elementary this means: 
O Smaller classes through Class Size 
Reduction (CSR) - 3 teachers 
O ELL program 
O Success Coordinator 
O Social Worker 
O Reading Intervention Teachers 
O Math teacher 
O Early Childhood Program 
O Boystown Training for the staff
What types of programs are 
provided through Title I funds? 
O More training for school staff – 
O At Hawthorne Elementary this means: 
O Funded Professional Development Plan for our 
building 
O Funding for staff to attend workshops on 
research-based instructional strategies 
O Funds for Boystown training – a way to teach 
students to manage their own behavior
What types of programs are 
provided through Title I funds? 
 Extra time for instruction 
 Variety of teacher methods and materials 
 Educationally focused family activities 
 Supplemental Education Services
Being a Focus school means…. 
Two years ago, our testing in reading and math for 
two of our sub-groups was too low 
A focus on data has helped us identified which kids 
need help, and what type of interventions help them 
Our math intervention teacher, Mr. Jager, is funded 
through this program.
How does Title I help your 
child? 
· Smaller class sizes allow more instructional 
time focusing on individual students’ 
learning needs 
· Programs are designed to meet students’ 
specific learning needs 
· The quality of instruction in the classroom is 
improved through the research based 
strategies in the professional development 
plan.
Where do we hope to go? 
O Staff at Hawthorne Elementary will 
continue to capitalize on their 
collective efforts to make sure all 
students learn at high levels.
Improvements 
O The 1:1 computer initiative 
O Advanced training for teachers in math and 
reading 
O Adding the math teacher to work with 
students in 2nd-5th grades that are struggling 
O Adding the Success Coordinator, another 
counselor who focuses on student behavior 
and success
What’s different? 
O We often call on students to share their 
experiences from family, culture, or 
community. 
O We don’t have students working in isolation 
from peers or emphasize only speed and 
memorization – we see our students 
working in a variety of groups and partners. 
O Students have goal folders where they set 
goals and document their progress.
In math, what do we see in the 
classroom? 
O Students are actively involved in all aspects 
of the lesson. 
O Students solve problems as their primary 
purpose in math. 
O Students work fewer computational 
exercises and more problems that require 
higher-order thinking. 
O Students are asked to justify and explain 
their thinking
Reading and Writing 
O More guided reading groups, working with 
students at their specific level. 
O Kids have access to computer programs like 
Big Universe and Pebble Go which provide 
ebooks. 
O Students can access them at home.
Encouraging students to 
think, reason, and share ideas 
O They do more than get the right answer; they 
think critically about their ideas, give 
reasons for their answers, and communicate 
their ideas in math, reading, and writing.
