We must understand who the student is as a person (Powell & Kusuma-Powell, 2011)
– Learning Style & Multiple intelligence
– Motivation and Interest
– Readiness and Need
– Accommodations & modifications
– Multiple access points
– Emotional and Social Influences
– Cultural and Societal influences
The Student
 Student-Teacher relationship must be positive (Muller, 2001)
- Having high expectations
- Establishing trust
- Caring about well-being of students
When students know teachers care, they word harder.
Positive Learning Environment
• Involvement: active participation
• Personalization: Student-teacher interaction
with concern for students
• Student cohesiveness: Students support
each other
• Task orientation: activities are clear and
organized
• Innovation: creative teaching methods,
activities, and assignments
• Individualization: decision process is held
by students and differentiated instruction is
used

What do we teach
• Backward design and vertical alignment teacher team
• Curriculum alignment to standard (horizontal teacher teams)
– Unpacking the standards
– Item specifications documents
• Collaboration to identify needs based on data
• Develop interdisciplinary project based learning with potential team teachers
• Develop curriculum pacing and/or analyzed pacing guide and develop focus
calendar
• Data-driven instruction and grouping students effectively
Writing across the curriculum
• Engage students as critical thinkers
• Aids retention
• Increases the depth of knowledge on a subject
• Promotes independent thinking
• Helps monitor progress
• Develops metacognition
• To organize new information

  • 4. The Student  Student-Teacher relationship must be positive (Muller, 2001) - Having high expectations - Establishing trust - Caring about well-being of students When students know teachers care, they word harder.

Positive Learning Environment • Involvement: active participation • Personalization: Student-teacher interaction with concern for students • Student cohesiveness: Students support each other • Task orientation: activities are clear and organized • Innovation: creative teaching methods, activities, and assignments • Individualization: decision process is held by students and differentiated instruction is used Barr (2016)

What do we teach • Backward design and vertical alignment teacher team • Curriculum alignment to standard (horizontal teacher teams) – Unpacking the standards – Item specifications documents • Collaboration to identify needs based on data • Develop interdisciplinary project based learning with potential team teachers • Develop curriculum pacing and/or analyzed pacing guide and develop focus calendar • Data-driven instruction and grouping students effectively
