Title Analysis
- 1. The title screen of the movie “Se7en” uses a primarily grunge type font in white with a black background, and the text flickers, enlarges and changes position on the screen whilst an old fashioned camera reel effect plays over the top. The flickering text is far from ordered and signifies that there will be disorder throughout the movie. The white font could symbolise purity but the fact that some of the black (darkness) is covering the font it suggests that they will have a tough fight ahead. In this screen grab the eyes of the person in the picture are drawn over. The fact that this is the first part of their face to be crossed out shows that the villain would perhaps be unable to commit the crime otherwise and does not want all eyes on him. The shadowing effect around the image shows that darkness is closing in on him. Another grunge font is used to establish the dark, dirty effect that plays throughout the title sequence. In the shot(right), an unidentified man, presumably the criminal due to the plaster on his hand, showing a form of bodily damage/deformity. He is also seen throughout the title sequence adjusting different aspects, be them writing or appearing to slice at his fingertips. The rough appearing objects within the frame such as the scissors give a sense of the character.
- 2. The soundtrack which overlays the title sequence of Se7en starts with some creaking noises and the sound of some form of machinery, followed by a high pitch scream like noise. The suspense builds as the music slowly speeds up, this suggests that the movie is going to start at a fairly slow pace with a couple of moments of importance. The picking up in pace of the music when the person’s eyes are crossed out about half way through suggests that the pace will start to pick up once the first victim has been killed. The title sequence ends with the words “you bring me closer to God” which shows that the killer believes he is motivated by his religion. There are references throughout the title sequence to the seven deadly sins, so the music and title sequence fit with the theme of the movie. Music from title sequence of Se7en
