analytical thesis. It is analyzing a particular text and setting forth an argument about it in the
form of a thesis statement.
2. Decide what to write about. If you are writing this for a class, your teacher will
generally assign you a topic (or topics) to write about. Read the prompt carefully. What is
the prompt asking you to do? However, sometimes you will have to come up with your
own topic.
If you're writing an analytical essay about a work of fiction, you could focus your
argument on what motivates a specific character or group of characters. Or, you could
argue why a certain line or paragraph is central to the work as a whole. For example:
Explore the concept of vengeance in the epic poem Beowulf.
If you're writing about a historical event, try focusing on the forces that contributed to
what happened.
If you're writing about scientific research or findings, analyze your results.

3. Brainstorm. You may not immediately know what your thesis statement should be, even
once you've chosen your topic. That's okay! Doing some brainstorming can help you
discover what you think about your topic. Consider it from as many angles as you can.

· The first paragraph or two should discuss the issue, problem, or topic that you researched. It should provide any background information that is necessary for the reader to understand the essay, and it should define any unfamiliar terms. Once you introduce the topic and provide background information, then you should state your thesis and the main reasons for your thesis. You will continually refer back to the thesis statement throughout the paper, AND everything in the paper will be connected to the thesis statement. This will help you keep your focus and go deep rather than broad into the information you gathered.
· After you have introduced your topic and stated the thesis, explain your first sub-claim (a sub-claim is a claim that supports the main idea or thesis). Remember this is an essay so you should have one main point that you are trying to communicate. You may have found out many, many things that you cannot include. What is the most important information? What's the best way to get that across to your readers?
· Each paragraph is also like a mini-essay. Each paragraph will have one main point or idea that you are developing. Then you will explain the main idea and give examples.

The type of papers you will write and how to write them
For this course, you will be writing literary analysis as formal essays for the midterm and
final exams. They are persuasive in nature. According to William Whitla in his book The English
Handbook: A Guide to Literary Studies, a persuasive essay “attempts to persuade a reader that
the position you are defending is valid . . . . Your case will depend on your evidence, and how
you marshal it for your purposes (88). The evidence used in literary analysis consists of
quotations from the text(s) that support your assertion (thesis) and your interpretation of those
quotations. The biggest difference between what I am describing here and a “research paper” is
that you do not need to do outside research to support your ideas. All the evidence you need is
embedded in the author’s work. Of course, that means you have to read closely and think
carefully about what the author writes in the text(s), but that is part of the study of
literature. Also, the text(s) really are sources for your paper; therefore, you must document every
quotation. This is also true for paraphrases of action and speech in the text(s). In this course, you
must use MLA documentation guidelines. This includes both in-text notations and a Works Cited
page. (Note: This document illustrates the use of introductory signals and in-text notations,
also called parenthetical citations, for all paraphrases and quotations and includes a Works Cited
page, all following MLA guidelines.)
When you receive an assignment, Whitla writes that you must first “separate [the] subject
matter from the formal requirement” (89), like the number of texts/authors your must cover than
the length of the paper. You need to satisfy all the formal requirements of the assignment to earn

your best grade. Then, you have to consider the subject matter of the assignment. Whitla
explains, “Many assignments state or assume an abstract concept, a theme, a mode of character
analysis, or state a position, and then ask you to apply that concept to a limited number of texts .
In many cases, it is clear that . . . the principle is really not open to question” (90). At other
times, you may be allowed to choose your own subject matter. Finally, you need to look at what
the assignment says about the subject matter, looking for key words that explain how you need to
address them. Here is an example from a possible Shakespeare module in this course.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. (e.g. Terrible fire devastates theatre), or ‘cold’, i.e. academic, intended
solely to inform without frills (e.g. Fire destroys theatre).
Sometimes, as you can see, a simple adjective can change the tone.
It is important that it reflects the truth.
THE TITLE

THE LEAD
Also known as the hook, i.e., the start of the article.
It is a very important part, as it aims to engage and start a
reflection on the topic.
The lead can be one of a number of types: enunciating
information, a fact or one of its peculiarities, a description
of a situation, the statement of one of the protagonists or
witness of the event, a question.

According to English journalistic tradition, the lead must answer the
famous 5 Ws:
What: what happened?
Who: who is the event’s protagonist?
When: when did it take place?
Where: where did it happen?
Why: why did it happen?
… and there is even a How (how did the events occur?)

THE BODY
The greater part of the article, where the central argument is made
or developed. It includes the "background", or contextual and
surrounding information, which can be helpful for framing the
argument better.
In opinion articles, this section set out the idea and can rebut the
opposing position.

CONCLUSION
In the conclusion, summaries are drawn together and
positions restated. Usually, the article is concluded with an
impactful phrase or at least an incisive final thought.

run the risk of sending the reader to sleep with such a

If you started with a statistic in the introduction, think about how

Correct the article
Take the time to reread and correct the piece.
Correct, rewrite certain paragraphs or even the entire
article, if necessary. Make sure that the writing has no
grammatical errors.
It can be helpful to print a copy of the article. Read it
aloud and ask someone to read it to you. Listen to the
tone, rhythm, length of phrases, coherence,
grammatical errors or content… and correct them.

Write the title
The article should have an appropriate and concise
title, of no more than 10 words.
It should effectively encapsulate the subject and
even be oriented towards action and convey the
reason why the story you told may be important. You
should attract readers’ attention and continue to
