Every job changes over time but what happens to roles and the people in them when change becomes necessary due to the accelerated evolution of an academic department? What are the intrinsic differences between generalist and specialist roles? What are their specific advantages and disadvantages? Which model works best for professional services staff, students and faculty?This interactive workshop will take participants through the process of acknowledging that change is sometimes necessary, determining what form that change should take and implementing those new structures. It will focus on the personal implications of change and how to retain control of a potentially difficult process; how communications with various stakeholders are managed; and how those involved need to be truly engaged and supportive of the process so that an effective team can be formed.
Using a real-life example to better explore these issues, participants will gain an understanding of the causes, implications and consequences of large-scale change and restructure. They will be encouraged to think about the structure of their own teams and to use the lessons we learned to help them identify any possible solutions to problems they may be facing.

This document describes the application of Carol Kuhlthau's Information Search Process (ISP) model in higher education curricula. The ISP model was adapted and implemented in introductory courses in media studies and health research methods. For media studies, an online tutorial and preparatory assignment were created to help students develop research skills and produce better quality bibliographies and essays. Student feedback was positive, and assessment results improved after implementing the adapted ISP model. The health research methods course also integrated an online interactive tutorial based on the ISP model to scaffold the research process. Student and tutor feedback indicated the assessments supported student learning and achievement.

However, disciplined inquiry is being adopted without much reference to research on effective performance management processes or the relationship between inquiry and teacher outcomes. While interest in disciplined inquiry is understandable, there is little evidence about what works, for whom, and under what conditions when used for performance management. The persistent concern of stakeholders in the education sector over the dwindling academic performance of students in Nigerian secondary schools could be attributed to the perceived inadequacies in instructional time management. This study therefore investigated principals’ instructional time management strategies, teachers’ effectiveness in instructional tasks, and students’ academic performance in secondary schools in Ondo North Senatorial District of Ondo State, Nigeria. Descriptive design of the survey type was adopted. Multi-stage sampling technique was used to select 30 public secondary schools from three (3) Local Government Areas in the Northern Senatorial Districts of Ondo State. The sample comprised 600 teachers and 30 principals randomly selected for the study. Three (3) research questions were answered using frequency counts and percentage, while three (3) hypotheses were tested using Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC) at 0.05 level of significance. Findings indicated a significant relationship between principals’ time management strategies and teachers’ instructional tasks performance (r-cal=0.622, p<0.05), there was significant relationship between principals’ time management strategies and students’ academic performance (r-cal=0.702, p<0.05), and significant relationship between teachers’ instructional tasks performance and students’ academic performance (r-cal=0.587, p<0.05). The major constraints to instructional time were pressure of administrative duties and excess workload. Based on the findings, it was recommended that principals should step-up efforts at prioritizing administrative tasks, encouraging teamwork in instructional activities and delegating duties to the experienced teachers in the management cadre to reduce excess workload, and improve monitoring and evaluation of teachers’ instructional tasks performance for better academic performance of students in secondary schools.Curriculum Management Practices by Head of Schools: Empirical Evidence from S...

This study examined the curriculum management practices of highly experienced and less experienced secondary school principals in Nnewi Education Zone, Nigeria. A questionnaire was used to collect data from 106 principals on their management practices. The results found no significant difference between the practices of highly experienced principals (with 5+ years of experience) and less experienced principals (with under 5 years). Both groups reported reviewing course curricula and holding meetings to plan extracurricular activities.
