Seven Habits of a Highly Effective agile project managerGlen Alleman
Recent neurological studies indicate that the role of emotion in human cognition is essential; emotions are not a luxury. Instead, emotions play a critical role in rational decision–making, in perception, in human interaction, and in human intelligence. Habits are the intersection of knowledge, skill, and desire.

“Some of us get so used to the adrenaline rush of
handling crisis that we become dependent on it for a
sense of excitement and energy. How does urgency
feel? Stressful? Pressured? Tense? Exhausting? – Sure
but lets be honest, its also exhilarating. We feel
useful. We feel successful. We feel validated. And we
get good at it. Whenever there’s trouble, we ride into
town, pull out our six shooter, do the varmint in, blow
the smoke off the gun barrel, and ride into the sunset
like a hero.
It brings instant results and instant gratification”

“We get a temporary high from solving urgent and
important crises. Then when the importance isn’t there,
the urgency fix is so powerful we are drawn to do
anything urgent, just to stay in motion. People expect us
to be busy, overworked. It’s become a status symbol in
our society – if we’re busy, we’re important; if we’re
not busy, we’re almost too embarrassed to admit it.
Busyness is where we get our security. It’s validating,
popular and pleasing. It’s also an excuse for not dealing
with the important things in our lives – the “first
things.”

Creating Time for Quadrant 2 Activities
• Identify and eliminate quadrant 3 and 4 activities
• Review any “quadrant 1” activities – Is it really your quadrant 1?
- How will this support the things that are important to you?
- Do you really have to do this at all?
- What will happen if you don’t do it?
- What effect will it have on your relationship with this person or the
organisation if you drop or postpone it?

That’s rich
A boat docked in a tiny Mexican village and an American tourist asked the fisherman how long it took him to catch
his fish. “Not long” answered the Mexican.
“So why didn’t you stay out longer and catch more?” asked the American.
The Mexican explained his small catch was sufficient to meets his needs and those of his family. The American asked:
“But what do you do with the rest of your time?”
“I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children and take a siesta with my wife. In the evenings I go into the village to
see my friends, have a few drinks, play the guitar and sing a few songs. I have a full life.”
The American interrupted: “I have an MBA from Harvard and I can help you. You should start by fishing longer
everyday. You can then sell the extra fish you catch. “ With the extra revenue, you can buy a bigger boat. With the
extra money the larger boat will bring, you can buy a second and a third and so on until you have fleet of trawlers.
“Instead of selling your fish to a middle man, you can negotiate directly with the processing plants and maybe open
your own plant.
“You can then leave this village and move to Mexico City, Los Angeles or even New York. From there you can direct
your enterprise.”
“How long would that take?” asked the Mexican. “Oh, 20, maybe 25 years,” replied the American.
“And after that?”
“That’s when it gets really interesting,” answered the American. “When your business gets really big, you can sell
stocks and make millions.”
“Millions? And then What?”
“After that, you’ll be able to retire, live in a tiny village near the coast, sleep late, play with your children, catch a few
fish, take a siesta with your wife and spend your evenings drinking and playing the guitar.”Based on "First Things First" Covey,
