Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web in 1989 while working as an engineer at CERN. He wrote the initial proposal for the Transmission Control Protocol and domain name system that formed the basis of the Web. In 1991, he built the first website and launched it on August 6th, making the Web available to the public.
