During the infamous O.J. Simpson trial the television news media was ever present. Placing the trial
as a top news story set in motion the idea that this trial was an important issue. However, the
television news media was not successful at determining whether O.J. was guilty or not. For this
reason, the O.J. Simpson trial is an excellent example of the Agenda Setting Theory. This paper will
analyze the role the theory has in the murder trial. Television news outlets support this theory by
showing people the Simpson case was important through constant coverage, but was not successful
at telling the audience what to think on the issue.
Theoretical Background
Understanding the background and history of the Agenda Setting Theory is imperative to this
analysis. Dr. Max McComb and Dr. Donald Shaw developed the Agenda Setting Theory in a study
conducted during the 1968 presidential election (McCombs & Shaw, 1972, p. 178). This study
describes how if an audience is exposed to the same media, they will place importance on the same
issues. This theory strictly presents information and sets the terms of public discourse. At the time,
this was a trailblazing new idea.

My peer is a 29–year–old Canadian, who has been studying in college for 11 years, and will be
graduating next year with a Bachelors of Arts in applied linguistics, and a Bachelors of Science in
psychology simultaneously. My peer believes that everything can be accomplished since they hasn't

The salience of an issue determines to what degree of importance the audience and the media place
on a particular story. The salience of a story in agenda setting determines the salience of the issues
within the public agenda (Leckenby).
The vividness of presentation is one way to raise the level of salience of an issue. A story that is

I personally believe that framing is more compelling than agenda setting. I feel as though agenda
setting is a much more "cut and dry" theory compared to framing. Framing is more complex and

Sociological Reflection
Throughout the course of this semester, I have learned there are many different terms and theories
about society that I feel like I can relate to and have a much better understanding about the concept
of sociology. For the last paper of this class I would like to talk about the last three sociological
concepts that I feel have helped me improve my understanding of the relationship between society
and myself. The three concepts that I will talk about are: fictive kin, agenda setting theory, and
lastly, bystander effect or diffusion of responsibility. As someone who did not grow up with a typical
family, I claim most of my close friends as "family" members. Every year we get together for
birthdays, vacations and celebrate some holidays together. Some of my close friends are even closer
than my actual family. One friend that I grew up with since the 7th grade is practically a brother to
me, and even though I have and love my own mom, to this day I call his mother "mom" as well. I do
believe that family is based on bonds and emotional ties, not just by blood and marriage. Our
textbook defines "fictive kin as close relations with people we consider 'like family' but who are not
related to us by blood or marriage (p.352)". This sociological concept helps me realize that my own
situation of who and what I consider family is more common than I may have thought before.
Another concept that has been more clarified in these last few chapters is agenda–setting theory

Agenda Setting Analysis
Introduction The presidency occupies a unique position in all systems of government including the
American system of government. The formal powers and the constitutional position occupied by the
institution of the presidency are at the core of all national and international politics (Alexandrova &
Timmermans, 2013). The President can serve as Commander–in–chief, nominate and appoint
ambassadors, just to name a few of the powers of office. However, there is another power that is
often overlooked by most, the power of agenda setting. The Constitution does not directly state this
power, but it is heavily implied. This paper scrutinizes the institution of the presidency in line with
agenda–setting literature. The agenda setting process relates to a series of streams, circumstances, or
activities within public policy institutions and processes. The agenda setting process has three
streams that incorporate the problem stream, the policy stream, and the politics stream. The problem
stream relates to potential policy problems that may have different magnitudes attached to them.
The policy stream associates with an agglomeration of potential solutions to policy problems

The Campaign, A Good And Positive Light
Identity As we created this campaign, we developed several themes, symbols, motives and values in
order to bring the project together and ensure the audience would receive it favorably, or in a
beneficial and positive light. In the campaign, there are two primary themes, the first of which is
recognition. In general, KULT is an unknown and ambiguous organization that needs to build a
brand or an image for itself among students. The second theme of the campaign is unity. KULT
wants to be seen as an organization that offers specific services and content to students who listen to
the station or work for it. The goal of the campaign, then, is to provide a unified message to the
audience showing exactly what KULT is, what it can do for students, and what it means to be
involved. The message will unify the student body by presenting these facts, creating a sense of
understanding and interest in the station. These two themes are carried out in several ways. Our
motive is to bring students together in recognizing and understanding KULT so they can not only
enjoy it, but take advantage of it. Our values are focused around those of KULT: offering something
new and fun to benefit the panther community in whatever ways they can and building a community
in the station. We bring these elements together with a symbol: a new logo for KULT. By tying these
elements together and promoting them through the message and new logo, people will have a better
