Oil and gas are the lifeblood of economic growth. Activity in Oil and Gas sector is an activity that
is high risk, high technology and high cost, so it requires the high performance and productivity.
For achieve that are needed a mature and appropriate strategies in dealing with its contextual
variables.
This study aimed to examine the effect of suitability (fit) between the strategy’s implementation
with contextual variables on the performance of production at oil and gas company in
Indonesia. The contextual variables in this study are the External Environment and Production
Technology, where both these contextual variables if it has the same typology conformity with
the strategies implemented, is expected to increase production performance in oil and gas
sector.
This study uses primary and secondary data. For Primary data is collected by the questionnaire
technique, namely by providing a written statement to the respondent. Furthermore, the
respondents will respond to the statement given. Questionnaires are distributed in this study
amounted to 60, and returning as much as 49 questionnaires (81.66 %). As for the secondary
data obtained through some notes related to oil and gas company.
In the overall configuration of oil and gas company in Indonesia has a strategic orientation
conformity with the external environment and production technology in improving the
performance of production, but in contingency approach have not yet matching with the
external environment variable for companies to deploy an entrepreneur strategy, neither with
companies which applying conservative strategy that do not have suitability yet with production
technology variable.
