Heat flow meters and probes were used to measure heat fluxes at up to 200 positions on cathode shells and cradles and up to 60 positions on anode panels of a cell to assess its thermal balance. The measurements were transferred to an Excel spreadsheet which performed averaging of heat fluxes for different surfaces and calculated total cell heat loss by summing heat losses of individual surfaces. The cell heat loss measured in this thermal blitz process must be comparable to the cell's internally assessed heat for the results to be considered reliable.
