Use of the passive voice In the last example, I focus on the fact that a mistake was made, but I do not say who made that mistake and I do not blame anyone.
Form of the Passive Subject + finite form “ to be ” + past participle Example: A letter was writt en . When rewriting active sentences in the passive voice: The object of the active sentence becomes the subject of the passive sentence. The finite form of the verb is changed (to be + pp) The subject of the active sentence becomes the object of the passive sentence (or is dropped).
Personal and Impersonal Passive Personal passive means that the object of the active sentence becomes the subject of the passive sentence. Every transitive verb that needs an object can form a personal verb. Example : They build houses - Houses are built.
Personal and Impersonal Passive Verbs without an object usually can’t form a personal passive sentence. If you want to use an intransitive verb in passive voice, you need impersonal construction. Example : He says - it is said. Impersonal Passive is not as common in English as in some other languages (German, Latin). In English Impersonal Passive is only possible with verbs of perception (say, know, think).
Personal and Impersonal Passive Examples: Impersonal passive They say women live longer than men. It is said that women live longer than men. Personal Passive is more common: Women are said to live longer than men.
