Theo Chocolate in the aftermath of the Ebola outbreak
Seeds of the Cacao Tree are the main raw material in Theo Chocolate's line of products
Commitment to Quality • Cacao beans grow in a very narrow belt on either side of the Equator • Theo is committed to sourcing  high quality , organic beans • They pay a premium price for their beans • This price supports operations according to "triple bottom line" • It allows Theo to get the best available beans
Theo's Cocoa Beans Origin Congo: 1370 Panama: 1370 Peru: 500
General Environment Threat: Ebola • The Ebola outbreak began in Guinea in December of 2013 • Ebola outbreak has surfaced in the DRC in August of 2014 • Ebola's Economic Toll on Africa Starts to Emerge (WSJ, Sept. 5, 2014) • Virus set to hit growth in Africa just as countries were gaining momentum • Flow of goods is slowing down due to threat of virus
WSJ, October 18-19, 2014 Ebola Rattles Commodities
Geography At Play • Cacao from DRC needs to be shipped to the US • Commodities shipping companies raise costs to dock in Africa • This would lead to an increase in cost of raw cacao • To stay viable, Theo would need to raise prices • What if the ships refused to dock in African ports?
Neutralizing the Threat: Following in the footsteps of the Congo Bar
Congo Bar • Partnership with Eastern Congo Initiative (ECI) • Connecting with DRC farmers • Producing a chocolate bar made from 100% DRC beans • Giving back percentage of sales to ECI • Building sustainable, fair trade supply chain
In light of the Ebola outbreak, many organizations and companies are looking for ways to help countries affected by Ebola.
Forming Partnerships • Consider a partnership with an organization committed to fighting Ebola • Customer perspective: Educate consumers about Congolese bean safety • Supplier safety: support Ebola research   • Create a product that allows consumers to contribute to fighting Ebola • Once available, provide vaccine to farmers and their network
Empower Employees • Educate employees on Ebola • Let employees share ideas • Who are the A-players? • Give A-players the right tools • Meet with an Ebola survivor
WSJ, November 21, 2014 Democratic Republic of Congo Declared Free of Ebola Virus
Learn • DRC has been declared Ebola-free but no vaccine exists • Is there insurance against potential cocoa shipment delays? • Insurance shields from political unrest, hurricanes, fires, etc. • Does a Force Majeure claim cover Ebola? • FM is invoked when parties cannot meet its contractual obligations
"There is no 'Ebola clause' that will easily cover companies in the supply chain...it is a real gray area right now." WSJ, October 18-19, 2014
Cocoa Supply • Develop relationships with South American suppliers • Support research on higher yielding cocoa tree varieties • Continual commitment to equitable prices • Forge partnerships with other chocolate manufacturers • Participate in CocoaAction
WSJ, October 16, 2014 Cocoa Industry Comes Together to Boost Yields
"CocoaAction started in [2014] and aims to increase cocoa yields and farmer incomes through good agricultural practices..." WSJ, October 24, 2014
Dedicated to making our world a better place
