when everyone isn't treated equally because of the mass population they have. Many people are
saying the Democratic Republic of the Congo is already a dead country. In the Democratic Republic

Women: The True Treasures of the Congo
Women: The True Treasures of the Congo
Isabel Allende once said, "A man does what he can; a woman does what he cannot," and in the
highly patriarchal society of the Congo, this statement especially rings true. In both Heart of
Darkness and The Poisonwood Bible, the descriptions and testimonies of females and their
interactions with the male characters reveal that although women's actions are considered
insignificant and unworthy of commendation by men, in reality it is the females who accomplish
what needs to be done and keep the mens' world from from falling apart completely.
In Heart of Darkness, Marlow believes that it is impossible for women to meaningfully contribute to
society; yet before he even gets to the Congo, women prove to be competent, knowledgeable, and
even crucial to his future. Marlow, who is struggling to find a way onto a steam boat in the congo,
finally resorts to asking women to help him in his quest and is shocked and even ashamed that he
would do such a thing. Astounded at this notion, he even exclaims, "Then –would you believe it– I
tried the woman!" (Conrad 9). Ironically, Marlow would have never made it to the Congo and would
not have a story to tell at all without the persistence of his aunt in getting him a job. The irony
continues when Marlow encounters the old women who sit in front of the office he travels to in
order to inquire about his position. Marlow considers women to be oblivious to the world around
them, claiming that they are "out

The Congo Crisis
Over a period from 1960–1965, the first Republic of the Congo experienced a period of serious
crisis. There was a terrible war for power that displayed senseless violence and the desperation to
rule. There were many internal conflicts among the people. The country eventually gained
independence from Belgium. For many countries this would be a time for celebration. Unfortunately
for the people of the Congo this became a time to forget. Almost immediately after independence
and the general elections, the country went into civil war. Major developed cities like Katanga and
Kasai wanted to be independent from the Lumumba government. Different factions started to fight

This new country fresh from being colonized had an army but very few Congolese officers just
mainly army regulars. The country kept many foreign officers as the military trained local soldiers
for leadership positions. Many soldiers saw no chance for advancement and it seemed to be the
same conditions as they experienced before independence. An atmosphere of discontent grew
rampant for foreigners still in positions of power. On July 05, 1960 the army had a revolt against
these white officers near Leopoldville. They also attacked many Europeans targets in the area. Large
groups of mutineers paraded over the area attacking any foreign interest they could find. There was
wide spread looting and pillaging. The white population was targeted primarily. With the area in
total chaos and no one to police the unrest, the local white population had to flee. The majority of
the white refugees had to go to Brazzaville and Stanleyville to escape certain death. The unstable
government and the clear inability to control the military and the people created concern locally and
internationally. Due to the clear and present danger of the Belgian people living in the Congo, the
Belgian government felt that they had to intervene. Soldiers from Belgium were back on the ground
in the Congo to bring stability to the situation. This was a horrific sight to most of the Congolese

Decolonization
Why was process of decolonization peaceful in some countries and violent in others? (Before
Independence)
Brief historical background of colonization? (Historical Context) * What ignited calls for
independence from colonial rule in __________ (your country)?
A: Elections were held in rural areas(small cities) for reform and democratization of local
government. 1958 was a year of vigorous political discussion at issues of society in Belgian Congo.
The whole turning point of their advocacy for independence was during January 4–6 in 1959. In
January 4, a riot broke out in Leopoldville due to the fact that an Abako meeting had been banned.

Huge riots were caused by the hunger for independence by the people of Congo. The Belgian
authorities prohibited a political/cultural party named 'ABAKO' which was slowly gaining power in
the lower part of Congo. This led to riots for a span of three days and the Belgian government
announced that they would put more Congolese into the government (for moderate nationalists) at a
small scale in hopes of satisfying the demands. (Made a promise of eventual independence to
extreme nationalists). But suddenly there was a surge of political activity. The nationalist's demand
soon grew as fifty political parties were registered competing and Belgian Congo was beyond
control of the Belgian administration.
* When did _________ (your country) achieve independence? Who ended up in power? (Transition)
A: The Republic of Congo achieved independence on June 30, 1960. From January 18–27, 1960, an
event known as the 'The Roundtable Conference' was held in Brussels. Different Congolese parties
attended the meeting to discuss the transition into independence. There were two pivotal leaders,
Joseph Kasa–Vubu as President and Patrice Lumumba as Prime Minister.
To what extent were problems facing newly independent countries a legacy of colonial rule? * What
was the condition of the country upon independence? (Identify problems)
A: Coming from colonial rule, the Congolese had minimal knowledge to manage a huge country.

Democratic Republic Of Congo Essay
Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is considered a weak state because of its severe instability as
a country. Ethnic, political, and religious conflicts are perceived over the state's identity, and has
suffered decades of undemocratic military rule and the possible genocide. They struggle with severe
poverty, and the government has little interest in actually providing the country with laws to follow.
The government is the weakest part of the state. They have shown to be corrupt from the beginning.
"DRC has never existed as a sovereign, unified political entity. Established by a stroke of a pen in
1885 at the Berlin Conference, "The Congo Free State" was a forced labor scheme developed by
King Leopold II of Belgium. As European powers greedily divided Africa with no consideration for
social or tribal makeup, hundreds of different tribes and languages that had never coexisted together
were expected to adhere to a national identity. Half the population, as many as 10 million ... Show

Imperialism In The Congo
During 1884 through 1906 the Congo was the personal property of King Leopold II and from 1908
to 1960, it was under Belgian rule. Throughout this time, the Congo was ruled with the political
form of government known as Imperialism. An imperialistic government would extend its power
through military force and the new land. Imperialism in the Congo created unsuccessful resistance
movements as well as long term economic impacts to the country.
The Congo, a country in Central Africa began to be colonized by Europeans in 1876. Many
Europeans began to explore the interior of Africa. After these explorers, religious missionaries
followed, who want to help the "savage" African people by introducing Christianity as well as

Today, the Congo is an undeveloped, poor, and corrupt country. The life expectancy is around 43
years due to the lack of protection and unhealthy living conditions. According to The World Bank,
around 64 percent of the whole population is living in poverty. In fact, it is the seventh poorest
country in the world, just below Madagascar, as well as being the third least developed country
under Cape Verde (Nations Online). This is because "The Republic of the Congo still struggles with
their economy due to its historical inability to form on its own" (Mckinley). After the Congo was
finally able to gain independence from Belgium, they were unable to keep strong markets. This
inevitably led to an increase of poverty. Additionally, a country's GDP (gross domestic product) per
capita can determine how well a country is doing economically. The GDP per capita is calculated by
dividing total gross domestic product by the total population in the country. Today, the Democratic
Republic of the Congo has a GDP per capita of 484.21 USD. This is relatively low compared to
other countries; for example, the United States of America's GDP per capita is around 53,041.98
USD (World Bank). After Belgium granted the Congolese independence, years of being under
Belgian control resulted in an inhibition to develop. The African country "were not yet ready for
independence"(Scheyven). Their monarchy was inexperienced, which caused an

Imperialism And The Congo : Imperialism
Imperialism in the Congo
What is imperialism? According to Britannica, imperialism is a state policy, practice, or advocacy of
extending power and dominion, especially by direct territorial acquisition or by gaining political and
economic control of other areas. Belgium taking over the Congo is an example of this. The Congo
was a peaceful country, located in the heart of Africa, consisting of warm sunny days and beautiful
Lake Malebo. The people were free, and happy. This was before the hell started... King Léopold II
was the reason for this to happen. Léopold found the Congo and immediately fell in love with all the
resources that flourished there. Léopold then went on to colonizing the Congo and taking it in for his

Livingstone, I presume?". This was the formal yet informal meeting of the two. Livingstone ended
up passing away shortly in 1873. Stanley was very interested in Livingstone's explorations and
wanted to continue his legacy (David Livingstone. Web). Stanley went on to continue to explore the
Congo, as he was very intrigued by the resources it had to offer. He found that there was an
abundance of ivory, iron, and especially rubber. He wrote about his findings and published them all
throughout Europe. Stanley anticipated to develop the Congo region, but found failure in gaining the
support he needed from the British. He went on to ask the Belgian king at the time – King Léopold
II. Léopold was on board with Stanley's demands and was thrilled to tap into the Congo's wealth
(Henry Stanley. Web). This marks the start of the idea to have imperialised the Congo.
Once Léopold and Stanley came together to discuss their ideas of imperialism in the Congo,
Leopold decided they needed some way to seize the land to make it his. Leopold sent Stanley down
to the land, and discussed a written agreement which explained how Leopold would take over the
land to prevent the Arabs from abducting the congolese as slaves. The Congolese could not
understand very well, as their main language was French, but nevertheless agreed to the compliance
(AWPHRocklin Belgian Congo. Web). Leopold then went on to controlling the land and forced the

Recently released displacement figures bring the total number of internally displaced people (IDPs)
to 3.9 million (Neuzd). The provinces and regions with the largest numbers of IDPs include North
Kivu with more than a million, Greater Kasai with 762,000, Tanganyika with 584,000 and South
Kivu with 545,000 (UNHCR). The UN Refugee Agency has warned that more displacement is
probable in these regions. The World Food Programme and the UN Food and Agriculture
Organization estimate that 7.7 million people are food insecure (Staff). Farmers in Kasai have
missed two consecutive planting seasons because of the violence, which broke out last August with
the killing of a regional tribal leader who had defied the government of President Kabila. The
violence adds to an already unstable situation in the DRC. The region now accounts for more than
40% of the DRC's food insecure population (Staff).
The country is also in the midst of a cholera outbreak affecting 20 of its 26 provinces (Gayer).
Outbreaks and epidemics are more likely in unsanitary conditions, low income countries, and
displaced populations are especially at risk. The country has been in conflict for the majority of 20

Congo Imperialism Essay
Colonial rule in the Congo started in 1908 when King Leopold II of Belgium had the government
support colonial expansion, known as Imperialism, in the unexplored Congo Basin. King Leopold II
colonized Congo himself, with support from many other Western Countries, making the Congo Free
State. The Congo Free State is recognition for a personal colony, in this case Belgium colonizing the
Congo in 1885. However, violence from free state officials on native cologonese peoples put a large
amount of diplomatic pressure on Belgium to take control of the country. This was done by King
Leopold also in 1908 when he created the Belgian Congo officially and lawfully. Rule by Belgians

The Congo Free State Of The Zaire
The Congo Free State was a former state in Africa which is now entitled The Democratic Republic
of the Congo. It was created in the 1880s as the private holding of European investors. The Congo
was led by Leopold II, who was the king of the Belgians. The members of the Congo Free State
military intentionally maimed, murdered, tortured and raped millions of Congolese people. Leopold
believed oversea colonies were the key to a country's greatest, so he worked to obtain colonial
territory for Belgium. Neither of the Belgian people and government were interested in his "plan".
Soon after he was turned down by the government and people, Leopold began to develop a colony
in his private capacity as a typical citizen. After several ineffective schemes in Africa and/or Asia, he
organized a private holding company which was called, "Association Internationale Africaine". It
was disguised as an International Scientific and Philanthropic Association in 1876. Leopold hired a
famous explorer named Henry Stanley to establish a colony in the Congo region. Stanley gained
control of the land from local chiefs through "doth and trinket" treaties. The chiefs assumed they
were signing a friendship treaty, instead they were selling their land. Leopold was free to rule the
Congo Free State as a personal domain, and soon he was the sole ruler of about thirty million
people. The Congo Free State was a terror regime which included mass killings and maiming. The

The Conflict Of The Congo
In the year 1876, King Leopold II of Belgium began to display an interest in the civilization mission
in Africa. The documents on European Imperialism provide evidence for how the individuals in the
Congo are being exploited for European benefit, under the profit–making aim of King Leopold II.
European brutality in the Congo was the logical result of the European desire to implement 'proper'
civilization in the Congo, albeit through a lack of cultural understanding and compassion towards
the people of Congo. First, the document "Selections from the 1885 Berlin Act (Treaty)" was an
outline to the European people that King Leopold II had good intentions for his mission in the
Congo. However, it depicted the contradiction of what his true intentions were and what had
actually occurred. King Leopold outlined six Declarations for what he desired to change for the
Congo. Leopold stated, for instance, his desire to create a change in the freedom of trade for the
people of the Congo, as well the creation of "a Declaration relative to the slave trade, and the
operations by sea or land which furnish slaves to that trade." These Declarations relate to the thesis
of how the Europeans were directed in a way to think it was logical to create a change in the
significant issues in the Congo. The Europeans were lead to believe these six Declarations would
benefit the civilization of the Congo, by doing no harm. In actual fact. Leopold fails to point out
how he intends to follow

The Democratic Republic of the Congo is one of the largest African countries located in central
Africa. Congo is a country that has grown out of a history of Belgian colonisation. Congo also has a

rich on natural resources with a poor government, Congo has been the perfect target for foreign
exploitation of the lands resources. There is a high demand for cobalt from first world countries and
the demand keeps rising every year. The current battery technology enables big technology

Patrice Lumumba And The Congo Crisis
In June of 1960, at the height of the Cold War, Congo received its independence from King Leopold
II's Belgium. Patrice Lumumba, the first Prime Minister of Congo, was instrumental in the
Congolese bid for independence, and played a similar role in the early stages of postcolonial Congo,
known as the "Congo Crisis". In the new Congolese nation, Lumumba was faced with the challenge
of unifying a large African nation with difficulties arising from Cold war influences and geopolitical
tensions. As Prime Minister, Lumumba's primary goal was to build a functioning Congolese state,
with the Cold War being irrelevant save its ability to help in the process of state–building.

The short–term success of communist and other highly centralized governments was enticing to
Lumumba, so he turned to a strong centralized government as his way of unifying Congo. In the
context of the Cold War, with fears and tensions at an all–time high, this methodology alarmed the
nations of the free world. The Belgians and opposing political parties propagated the rumors of
Lumumba's communist tendencies, vilifying Lumumba. As Lumumba later found out, this was an
unfortunate resemblance to bear in the free world.
Bearing the alleged connection to communism, Lumumba had to complete the difficult task of
unifying a vast landscape with many diverse ethnicities, languages, and political interests. The
province of Katanga posed the greatest threat to Lumumba in this respect. Katanga was extremely
important as it was the most wealthy and lucrative province in Congo, making it paramount to a
successful Congolese nation. Unfortunately for Congo, Moise Tshombe, the leader of Katanga, did
not see eye to eye with Lumumba. As demonstrated in film, the leaders of Katanga, with the support
of Belgium, sought to secede from the independent Congo, resulting in a frenzy as the soldiers led a
Katangese revolt. As a consequence, geopolitical tensions were at their zenith. Lumumba attempted
to quell this revolt with his own troops, but the new Congolese nation's army was untrained and
unorganized and thus was ineffectual in its response to the chaos.

Imperialism In The Congo Research Paper
In the Congo, many people were affected by Imperialism in many different ways. For some people
were shamed, had curfews, and some were often banned from "white" people establishments.
Therefore, it was like segregation to the Congolese people. They had religion forced onto them by
the Roman Catholic and some Protestant Churches. However, they gained formal education systems
and slowly improved their healthcare. The government even sponsored teaching a handful of
languages in the schools. When imperialism first hit, the Congo experienced withdrawal of
resources due to lack of farming, therefore having a small population was vital to the Congolese
people would support themselves. It was not until after the Congo gained their independence back,
did the population start to grow back. Sadly, among the small population in the Congo, most were

What KIng Leopold II was trying to do with the Imperialism was get to the many resources that the
Congo had to offer. After the Congo gained its independence back they are still striving to make the
Congo a completely free country. They are still on of the least developed countries due to their lack
or quality of life, resources, imports and exports, and education. Violence has also become a
problem since the Rwandan Genocide that caused many wars. Statistics say the Congo has great
potential to be in a good place again, financially and economically. The imperialism, however, sent

How Did Imperialism Affect The Congo
The Congo was a place that was very rich in economic resources, mineral wealth and natural
resources, but with all that aside, it was still considered the heart of darkness. The Congo was
primarily known for the economic exploitation of natural resources and labor, the main attraction of
the Congo included ivory, rubber and rich minerals. The main issue would be the fact that the leader
of colonization, King Leopold II had no sense of set control over the overran African chunk, which
caused brutal abuse over the Congolese population. He had no form of organized government or any
law restrictions that would protect the natives in the congo or their ancestral lands and forced these
natives to become slave workers. The Congo would become ... Show more content on

The economy was completely brought down, then left that way in turmoil. Even now there is
struggle in the economy due to leaders not knowing how to organize and help their people even
though they are in serious need of direction. Since King Leopold II had taken over every aspect of
the colony during the 19th century, Leopold kept the system flowing with every resources and trade
yet he did not share any of his knowledge with the original tribes that resided, after his departure
many of the few settlers that remained no longer knew how to repair what was so far gone. A land
that was once rich in resources is now amongst the worst in poverty. There is a huge lack in food for
the population that resides there. In current date, The Congo barely has little, to no access to clean
water.(SOS Children) You may even see different associations trying to donate to this area in Africa
due to so many families being left with nothing to survive, so many families in fact are
malnourished. There is almost no help at all going into today's Congo even though it is not the tribes
fault that there is no resources left for their people. Aside from Leopold leaving the land in complete
drought of all resources, he also left behind many life threatening diseases that spread during the
massacre of enslaving the original settlers. The Congo during Leopold's time was stripped of any
benefits that could have been used in the long run. In today's Congo, there is not health care
available to those that reside there and that alone should tell how much lack of government there is.
Today the people of the land are still fighting for the rights that were taken from them a century ago.

The United Nations Operation Of The Congo
The United Nations Operation in the Republic of the Congo (ONUC) is best summarized by Walter
Dorn as, "the largest, most complex, and most expensive UN peacekeeping mission during the Cold
War" ("The UN's First 'Air Force'"). The ONUC was established on July 14, 1960 and ended in June
1964. The initial mandate by the Security Council called for "the withdrawal of Belgian forces from
the Republic of the Congo," however, quickly became the first peacemaking operation to use "all
necessary measures" ("ONUC"). Decolonization and the height of the Cold War added to the
complexity of the ONUC. The ONUC successfully halted the secession of the Katanga, however,
failed to address the financial and operational problems. This would negatively ... Show more

Under Article 99 of the UN Charter, Secretary General Dag Hammarskjöld, informed the Security
Council of "a threat to international peace and security" ("ONUC"). The ONUC was established
shortly after on July 14, 1960. The Congo Crisis advanced when tension arose among Prime
Minister Lumumba and President Kasavubu. On September 5, 1960, President Kasavubu "went on
radio to announce the dismissal of Lumumba as prime minister, blaming him for the Kasai
massacres"(Durch 321). Lumumba responded by claiming to fire President Kasavubu. By mid
September, "Colonel Joseph Mobutu, declared all government factions 'neutralized in what was, in
effect, a coup d'état" (Durch 321). Colonel Joseph Mobutu would later change his name to Mobutu
Sese Seko and play an important role in future conflict within the Congo and its neighbors. By
January 1961, Prime Minister Lumumba was killed and the Congo Crisis continued for another two
years. Decolonization and the height of the Cold War played a significant role in their involvement.
According to William Durch, "Great Power attitudes toward ONUC ranged all the way from
supportive (United States) to tepid (United Kingdom), to obstructionist (France), and hostile (Soviet

Due to large scale demonstrations and civil unrest around the country, people are slowing down

South Kivu. DRC travel advisory said advised people to not travel to eastern Congo and the tree
Kasai provinces due to violent crimes, such as sexual assault, robbery, and armed home invasion.
This makes it harder for transportation as many the demonstrations continue due to government
conflicts. It is reported that people are destroying roads and vehicles, which makes transportation for
tourists even harder. Drivers afraid of driving their cars because they scare of losing their cars. For
instance, the New York Times reported the killing of the two United Nations expert in the DRC
(Steve, Jina, 2017). The experts, Michael Sharp an American, and Zaida Catalan were investigators
on crimes associated with a rebellion group in central Kasai. Another challenge to the country is
poverty. The DRC is one of the countries that poverty is causing crimes. Due to the big number of
population, the DRC has not been figuring out the way to kick out or reduce the poverty level. As
reported by writer Phil Sylvester of World Nomads, the DRC is not a safe place to travel to alone.
He said that robbery and vehicle thief happens more during Christmas and New Year. Many sectors
and areas have water problems and have diseases caused such as cholera, diarrhea, and many water–
borne diseases. The east of the country is the poorest areas of the country. Malnutrition is a problem
as people are trying to reach the next day. Healthcare is another issue around the DRC because they
are poorly staffed. The reason behind this, is that the health care system collapsed during conflicts.

King Congo King Analysis
King Leopold set his focus on the Congo because he wanted to rule a colony of his own, something
bigger than just little old Belgium, and the Congo provided that. It had waterways that connected the
land, as well as people that he could use as slaves. A book that he had read titled Java, or How to
Manage a Colony had sparked Leopold's interest for a colony of his own (Hochschild, p. 37).
According to the quote, "In the mid–1870s, sub–Saharan Africa was a logical place for an aspiring
colonialist to look...about 80% of the entire land area of Africa was still under indigenous rulers. It
was ripe for conquest– or, as Leopold was now learning to say, for protection" (Hochschild, p. 42),
this land was an opportunity for Leopold to finally build a colony; especially after Stanley had found
the Congo River during an expedition. Leopold's purpose was "shaped by a desire not only for
money but for power" (Hochschild, p. 39). The Congo's resources were rubber and ivory, ivory was
made into false teeth, or piano pieces, among other things and this produced a lot of profits once
sold. However, the profits for rubber were much higher than that of ivory. The land itself provides
the power that Leopold wanted. Leopold was successful in the sense that he did become the ruler of
the Congo, he did gain profits out it, he did have slaves that built railways, as well as an army made
majority of its own people, the natives. Leopold failed in the sense that he thought the truth would

Patrice Lumumba, an avid nationalist, was elected prime minister. Under Lumumba's leadership, the
government declared independence. According to Stephen Weissman in the Foreign Affairs
Journal,"Lumumba led the only party in parliament with a nationwide, rather than ethnic or regional,
base." Success within the new nation was short–lived. Within a week of independence, Congo's
troops staged a mutiny against the all–white officer corps. Terror attacks were committed against the
European settlers. Soon, the Belgians sent in their forces hoping to reoccupy the country and aid
Katanga, Congo's richest province, in secession. It is at this point that it is necessary to recall the
global context in which this catastrophe was occurring: the Cold War. When the United States
declined to help Lumumba rid the Congo of the Belgian solider (instead backing a United Nations
resolution) Lumumba turned to Nikita Khrushchev and the Soviet Union who provided transport
planes for the Congo's troops to get to Katanga. This started the myth in the minds of the American
government that Lumumba was a Communist and therefore a threat to U.S. hegemony. In August of
1960, the CIA director Allen Dulles cabled in to operatives in Léopoldville "We conclude that his

At first, the United Nations had refused to take part in the Katanga succession because it was an
internal conflict between the Congolese and the Belgians (Gibbs, 93). In actuality, the United
Nations really just wanted to stay in good with the United States. The United States has a large

percent of the organizations bills (UN.org, HowMuchDoesPeacekeepingCost?). The United States at
the beginning had supported the succession of Katanga. The Central Intelligence Agency had even

could not allow for the Soviet Union to be that external support. United States had a fear of

The Congo And King Leopold
Africa was a very large continent back then and everyone was spread apart. Also, everyone worked
for their selves and didn't have to be told what to do. No one was expecting hardships or forced
labor until the British and many other countries came into play. The British were not happy until
they found the "Free State" of the Congo. They were led to investigate by a man named Roger
Casement.
In the first reading, The Congo and King Leopold, the group of people that lived in the Congo were
known as the Congolese and were later well known in this reading. King Leopold did not feel happy
with just owning Belgium so he went off to the Congo. Meanwhile, Casement's report caused
debates and in the reading it states, "Millions of Africans were being killed or dismembered while
harvesting rubber from the forest of Central Africa . . . for cheap rubber and to satisfy King
Leopold's quest for wealth." The causes and effects were seriously deadly because Leopold enslaved
Africans that he owned when he took over Africa. Having said that, once the Industrial Revolution
gained more momentum Europeans wanted to find land and build their new and safer lives in Africa.
The author states ".. people there realized that if they wanted to surpass neighboring countries
economically, they would need access to more raw materials to fuel their factories and more people
to purchase the products those factories made." Europeans that didn't want to stay came over to
Africa and took their land. They

Analysis Of Film Congo
Paramount Pictures film Congo, adapted from the Michael Crichton novel of the same name, is one
of the smartest parody of typical jungle adventure plots in cinema. Congo, after its release, has been
criticized for try to piggyback off "The success of Universal's Jurassic Park" just two years earlier
(James Berardinelli). Though the camp style, visuals, and acting, adds to the film's charm, while not
undermining the viewer's intelligence with smart one–liners and dialogue that holds weight between
acts. This creates the feel of a B action movie on an A movie's budget.
Large uncharted jungles, counties in political turmoil, and lost cities of dead civilizations, are
settings that are archetypal to adventure films. Congo uses these settings to play with the movie's
humor. With several sites such as the city of Zinj, clearly looking like it was shot on a sound stage in
Hollywood, gives less believability to scenes filmed on location. Taking the gravity and the sense of
danger from even the intense scenes. This is aided by the practical effects such as costumes of the
silver back gorilla, and gray gorillas, with stiff movement and equally rigid expressions. Tied with
minimal effect, such as an animatronic hippo in the night river scene, gives Congo the visual
interpretation of a comedy.
The comedic parody aspect continues into the actors pretrial of the characters in Congo. The movie's
opening scene shows Jon Don Bakers character, giving a text–book example of over acting,

Mobutu official came to power in 1965, the Congo's economy began to do much better. Mobutu had

these women needed help. The only way for these women to get help was to lie.
There is an issue of statistical data in Congo given that the data is very hard to come by, and most
assume the numbers are likely higher than reported. Heaton, "What Happened in Lunvigi?" (2013).
However, Congolese aid workers questioned whether data was over reported are formed Congolese
aid workers. Rather the international aid organization is assumed that data is under–reported and that
the number is probably much higher. Importantly, in 2002 there were ten organizations working on
sexual violence by 2010 there were three hundred organizations. Heaton. "What Happened in
Lunvigi?" (2013). In Lunvigi, there was a range of six to three–hundred eighty–six, the low number
was reported by local doctors, and the high number reported by United Nations officials. Warner.

  • 9. Women: The True Treasures of the Congo Women: The True Treasures of the Congo Isabel Allende once said, "A man does what he can; a woman does what he cannot," and in the highly patriarchal society of the Congo, this statement especially rings true. In both Heart of Darkness and The Poisonwood Bible, the descriptions and testimonies of females and their interactions with the male characters reveal that although women's actions are considered insignificant and unworthy of commendation by men, in reality it is the females who accomplish what needs to be done and keep the mens' world from from falling apart completely. In Heart of Darkness, Marlow believes that it is impossible for women to meaningfully contribute to society; yet before he even gets to the Congo, women prove to be competent, knowledgeable, and even crucial to his future. Marlow, who is struggling to find a way onto a steam boat in the congo, finally resorts to asking women to help him in his quest and is shocked and even ashamed that he would do such a thing. Astounded at this notion, he even exclaims, "Then –would you believe it– I tried the woman!" (Conrad 9). Ironically, Marlow would have never made it to the Congo and would not have a story to tell at all without the persistence of his aunt in getting him a job. The irony continues when Marlow encounters the old women who sit in front of the office he travels to in order to inquire about his position. Marlow considers women to be oblivious to the world around them, claiming that they are "out ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. The Congo Crisis Over a period from 1960–1965, the first Republic of the Congo experienced a period of serious crisis. There was a terrible war for power that displayed senseless violence and the desperation to rule. There were many internal conflicts among the people. The country eventually gained independence from Belgium. For many countries this would be a time for celebration. Unfortunately for the people of the Congo this became a time to forget. Almost immediately after independence and the general elections, the country went into civil war. Major developed cities like Katanga and Kasai wanted to be independent from the Lumumba government. This new country fresh from being colonized had an army but very few Congolese officers just mainly army regulars. The country kept many foreign officers as the military trained local soldiers for leadership positions. Many soldiers saw no chance for advancement and it seemed to be the same conditions as they experienced before independence. An atmosphere of discontent grew rampant for foreigners still in positions of power. On July 05, 1960 the army had a revolt against these white officers near Leopoldville. They also attacked many Europeans targets in the area. Large groups of mutineers paraded over the area attacking any foreign interest they could find. There was wide spread looting and pillaging. The white population was targeted primarily. With the area in total chaos and no one to police the unrest, the local white population had to flee. The majority of the white refugees had to go to Brazzaville and Stanleyville to escape certain death. The unstable government and the clear inability to control the military and the people created concern locally and internationally. Due to the clear and present danger of the Belgian people living in the Congo, the Belgian government felt that they had to intervene. • 15. Democratic Republic Of Congo Essay Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is considered a weak state because of its severe instability as a country. Ethnic, political, and religious conflicts are perceived over the state's identity, and has suffered decades of undemocratic military rule and the possible genocide. They struggle with severe poverty, and the government has little interest in actually providing the country with laws to follow. The government is the weakest part of the state. They have shown to be corrupt from the beginning. "DRC has never existed as a sovereign, unified political entity. Established by a stroke of a pen in 1885 at the Berlin Conference, "The Congo Free State" was a forced labor scheme developed by King Leopold II of Belgium. Throughout this time, the Congo was ruled with the political form of government known as Imperialism. An imperialistic government would extend its power through military force and the new land. Imperialism in the Congo created unsuccessful resistance movements as well as long term economic impacts to the country. The life expectancy is around 43 years due to the lack of protection and unhealthy living conditions. According to The World Bank, around 64 percent of the whole population is living in poverty. In fact, it is the seventh poorest country in the world, just below Madagascar, as well as being the third least developed country under Cape Verde (Nations Online). This is because "The Republic of the Congo still struggles with their economy due to its historical inability to form on its own" (Mckinley). After the Congo was finally able to gain independence from Belgium, they were unable to keep strong markets. This inevitably led to an increase of poverty. Additionally, a country's GDP (gross domestic product) per capita can determine how well a country is doing economically. The GDP per capita is calculated by dividing total gross domestic product by the total population in the country. Today, the Democratic Republic of the Congo has a GDP per capita of 484.21 USD. This is relatively low compared to other countries; for example, the United States of America's GDP per capita is around 53,041.98 USD (World Bank). • 19. Imperialism And The Congo : Imperialism Imperialism in the Congo What is imperialism? According to Britannica, imperialism is a state policy, practice, or advocacy of extending power and dominion, especially by direct territorial acquisition or by gaining political and economic control of other areas. Belgium taking over the Congo is an example of this. The Congo was a peaceful country, located in the heart of Africa, consisting of warm sunny days and beautiful Lake Malebo. The people were free, and happy. This was before the hell started... King Léopold II was the reason for this to happen. Léopold found the Congo and immediately fell in love with all the resources that flourished there. Léopold then went on to colonizing the Congo and taking it in for his own. He colonized the ... Stanley was very interested in Livingstone's explorations and wanted to continue his legacy (David Livingstone. Web). Stanley went on to continue to explore the Congo, as he was very intrigued by the resources it had to offer. He found that there was an abundance of ivory, iron, and especially rubber. He wrote about his findings and published them all throughout Europe. Stanley anticipated to develop the Congo region, but found failure in gaining the support he needed from the British. He went on to ask the Belgian king at the time – King Léopold II. Léopold was on board with Stanley's demands and was thrilled to tap into the Congo's wealth (Henry Stanley. Web). This marks the start of the idea to have imperialised the Congo. Once Léopold and Stanley came together to discuss their ideas of imperialism in the Congo, Leopold decided they needed some way to seize the land to make it his. Leopold sent Stanley down to the land, and discussed a written agreement which explained how Leopold would take over the land to prevent the Arabs from abducting the congolese as slaves. The Congolese could not understand very well, as their main language was French, but nevertheless agreed to the compliance (AWPHRocklin Belgian Congo. Web). The Congo Free State is recognition for a personal colony, in this case Belgium colonizing the Congo in 1885. It was created in the 1880s as the private holding of European investors. The Congo was led by Leopold II, who was the king of the Belgians. The members of the Congo Free State military intentionally maimed, murdered, tortured and raped millions of Congolese people. Leopold believed oversea colonies were the key to a country's greatest, so he worked to obtain colonial territory for Belgium. Neither of the Belgian people and government were interested in his "plan". Soon after he was turned down by the government and people, Leopold began to develop a colony in his private capacity as a typical citizen. After several ineffective schemes in Africa and/or Asia, he organized a private holding company which was called, "Association Internationale Africaine". It was disguised as an International Scientific and Philanthropic Association in 1876. Leopold hired a famous explorer named Henry Stanley to establish a colony in the Congo region. Stanley gained control of the land from local chiefs through "doth and trinket" treaties. The chiefs assumed they were signing a friendship treaty, instead they were selling their land. • 33. The Conflict Of The Congo In the year 1876, King Leopold II of Belgium began to display an interest in the civilization mission in Africa. The documents on European Imperialism provide evidence for how the individuals in the Congo are being exploited for European benefit, under the profit–making aim of King Leopold II. European brutality in the Congo was the logical result of the European desire to implement 'proper' civilization in the Congo, albeit through a lack of cultural understanding and compassion towards the people of Congo. First, the document "Selections from the 1885 Berlin Act (Treaty)" was an outline to the European people that King Leopold II had good intentions for his mission in the Congo. However, it depicted the contradiction of what his true intentions were and what had actually occurred. King Leopold outlined six Declarations for what he desired to change for the Congo. Leopold stated, for instance, his desire to create a change in the freedom of trade for the people of the Congo, as well the creation of "a Declaration relative to the slave trade, and the operations by sea or land which furnish slaves to that trade." These Declarations relate to the thesis of how the Europeans were directed in a way to think it was logical to create a change in the significant issues in the Congo. The Europeans were lead to believe these six Declarations would benefit the civilization of the Congo, by doing no harm. In actual fact. Leopold fails to point out how he intends to follow ... Patrice Lumumba, the first Prime Minister of Congo, was instrumental in the Congolese bid for independence, and played a similar role in the early stages of postcolonial Congo, known as the "Congo Crisis". In the new Congolese nation, Lumumba was faced with the challenge of unifying a large African nation with difficulties arising from Cold war influences and geopolitical tensions. The short–term success of communist and other highly centralized governments was enticing to Lumumba, so he turned to a strong centralized government as his way of unifying Congo. In the context of the Cold War, with fears and tensions at an all–time high, this methodology alarmed the nations of the free world. The Belgians and opposing political parties propagated the rumors of Lumumba's communist tendencies, vilifying Lumumba. As Lumumba later found out, this was an unfortunate resemblance to bear in the free world. Bearing the alleged connection to communism, Lumumba had to complete the difficult task of unifying a vast landscape with many diverse ethnicities, languages, and political interests. The province of Katanga posed the greatest threat to Lumumba in this respect. Katanga was extremely important as it was the most wealthy and lucrative province in Congo, making it paramount to a successful Congolese nation. Unfortunately for Congo, Moise Tshombe, the leader of Katanga, did not see eye to eye with Lumumba. As demonstrated in film, the leaders of Katanga, with the support of Belgium, sought to secede from the independent Congo, resulting in a frenzy as the soldiers led a Katangese revolt. As a consequence, geopolitical tensions were at their zenith. Lumumba attempted to quell this revolt with his own troops, but the new Congolese nation's army was untrained and unorganized and thus was ineffectual in its response to the chaos. ... • 47. King Congo King Analysis King Leopold set his focus on the Congo because he wanted to rule a colony of his own, something bigger than just little old Belgium, and the Congo provided that. It had waterways that connected the land, as well as people that he could use as slaves. A book that he had read titled Java, or How to Manage a Colony had sparked Leopold's interest for a colony of his own (Hochschild, p. 37). According to the quote, "In the mid–1870s, sub–Saharan Africa was a logical place for an aspiring colonialist to look...about 80% of the entire land area of Africa was still under indigenous rulers. It was ripe for conquest– or, as Leopold was now learning to say, for protection" (Hochschild, p. 42), this land was an opportunity for Leopold to finally build a colony; especially after Stanley had found the Congo River during an expedition. Leopold's purpose was "shaped by a desire not only for money but for power" (Hochschild, p. 39). The Congo's resources were rubber and ivory, ivory was made into false teeth, or piano pieces, among other things and this produced a lot of profits once sold. However, the profits for rubber were much higher than that of ivory. The land itself provides the power that Leopold wanted. Congo, after its release, has been criticized for try to piggyback off "The success of Universal's Jurassic Park" just two years earlier (James Berardinelli). Though the camp style, visuals, and acting, adds to the film's charm, while not undermining the viewer's intelligence with smart one–liners and dialogue that holds weight between acts. This creates the feel of a B action movie on an A movie's budget. Large uncharted jungles, counties in political turmoil, and lost cities of dead civilizations, are settings that are archetypal to adventure films. Congo uses these settings to play with the movie's humor. With several sites such as the city of Zinj, clearly looking like it was shot on a sound stage in Hollywood, gives less believability to scenes filmed on location. Taking the gravity and the sense of danger from even the intense scenes. This is aided by the practical effects such as costumes of the silver back gorilla, and gray gorillas, with stiff movement and equally rigid expressions. Tied with minimal effect, such as an animatronic hippo in the night river scene, gives Congo the visual interpretation of a comedy. The comedic parody aspect continues into the actors pretrial of the characters in Congo. The movie's opening scene shows Jon Don Bakers character, giving a text–book example of over acting, ...
