Many cities are attempting to reduce congestion through innovative transport policies and projects. This report explores the challenges city leaders face in choosing the right combination of solutions to address their short- and long-term urban mobility challenges. It aims to provide direction on how city leaders can navigate through these challenges and how they can work together with community groups and the private sector to transform their cities for the future.
Increasing the Road Capacity Not Always Improves the Travel Time: A Before an...IJERA Editor
The rapid growth of the car ownership last two decades in Albania has increased the need for higher transportation capacity. One of the most affected cities in Albania is Tirana where the capacity has not met the demand. Inevitably, the center of Tirana (Skanderbeg Square) plays a crucial part in Tirana Transportation System. After a closure of about 2 years, being under reconstruction planned to be car-free area, Skanderbeg Square opened to traffic in 2011 by motorizing it again. This study analyses performance parameters such as: Travel Time, Waiting Time, and Passenger Movements for bus and passenger cars passing through the Skanderbeg Square before and after it was opened to traffic. Kinostudio-Kombinat bus line has been selected as the only line passing through the center of Tirana. Changing the land use from car-free to motorized one has created a valuable possibility to compare the traditional approach; which focuses only on cost to the sustainable one; which includes the environment and social aspects, too in the evaluation. Wider roads, shorter travel times and higher speed travel at the center (CBD) have made vehicle usage more attractive. At the same time, bus travel times have been improved at the center of Tirana. However, the total travel times were not only enhanced, but at some locations (especially near the CBD) where deteriorated. This study showed that traffic congestion problems are not solved but are shifted to other parts of Tirana Transportation System. In addition, public transportation revealed to be overcrowded, forcing passengers to use other modes like passenger car. Last but not least, other modes like bike or motorcycle riding should be encouraged as alternative to the passenger car.

Nations must make commitment to promote emissions-free mobility as a fundamental human right; doing the best things for humanity and society to lead towards a better and sustainable future and proactively promoting a paradigm shift towards electrification and creating a hydrogen based society for bringing sustainability. Sustainable transport is known for its distinct and numerous social and economic benefits for the communities, cities, environment and ecology. Studies made and analysis carried out has concluded that; Sustainable transport can help create large number of jobs; improve commuter safety through investment in bicycle lanes; reduce use of fossil fuel ; minimize pollution and congestion, making cities walkable; and making access to employment and social opportunities more affordable and efficient besides decarbonizing cities and making urban settlements more livable and sustainable. Sustainable transportation offers a practical opportunity and simple method of saving people's time, improving people’s health increasing household income and making cities great places for happy, healthy and more productive living besides making investment in sustainable transport, a 'win-win' option and opportunity for all stake holders.’ Decarbonizing, Carbon Neutrality and Zero-Carbon must remain the prime agenda to redefine, promote and achieve the sustainable transportation in urban areas and to achieve the mandate/goals given in SDG11. The cities need to create an efficient and affordable public transport services. The private sector may be invited through PPP to develop an integrated public transport system in a city. The private sector may charge an appropriate user fee (fare) from the users and earn revenue from commercial activities like advertising, renting & leasing of commercial spaces etc to cover his capital and recurring cost.

The Economist Intelligence Unit, on behalf of Temenos, surveyed 200 global banking executives to investigate the challenges retail banks face in the years to 2020 and how they are responding.
Some key findings:
The regulators will decide: Capital and compliance will shape incumbents and newcomers alike. Domestic regulators warn fintechs not to expect an easy ride.
Into the unknown: American banks worry about regulation the most, despite a promised rollback. European policy direction is more certain, yet onerous. Geopolitics do not help.
Resistance is futile: The EU’s Second Payment Services Directive and open architecture are the game changers. Banks may lose their customers’ loyalty, fintechs could hit compliance barriers. Both must collaborate to survive.
Complacency is not a virtue: Fear of peer-to-peer lenders and robo-advice may have peaked. Non-banks could still steal deposit and lending business—and profit—unless banks improve the customer experience.
No cash, no cheques: If they are smart, banks may still win the war to build truly universal digital networks.

Cancer in the workplace is an Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) report, sponsored by Bristol-Myers Squibb. It assesses the challenges that cancer poses for employers, examines workplace policies and practices to address the needs of those affected by the disease, and explores possible measures to strengthen workplace support.
In August-September 2016 The EIU surveyed 500 executives—150 from Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA), 150 from the Americas, 150 from Asia-Pacific and 50 from the rest of the world—on their companies’ approaches to cancer in the workplace. Survey respondents were drawn from a variety of sectors and functions (see Appendix). This report is based on the results of the survey. The EIU also conducted ten in-depth interviews with experts on cancer in the workplace. The insights from these interviews appear throughout the report. EIP Water Action Group City Blueprints September 2013EIP Water
The City Blueprint for Water is a baseline assessment of the sustainability of water management in a city (or other dominantly urban region). The result allows a city to quickly understand how advanced it is in sustainable water management and enables it to compare its status with other leading cities.
This project is one of nine Action Groups selected by the European Commission as an initial EIP Water Action Group.
Sixteen cities/regions have participated so far (August 2013) and many others are being approached. This is an opportunity to take part in a new and innovative programme to help improve city-level water stewardship, in the spirit of smart and sustainable cities.
The basic output is a simple radar chart as shown in the example from Melbourne at the top of this page. The chart provides a quick visual representation of the city’s water stewardship status, and is a tool for easy comparison between cities. It covers 24 key water-related subject areas, such as water footprint, water scarcity, water quality, drinking water availability and wastewater management.
A City Blueprint is just the first step on a journey of communication and cooperation between cities. A key intention is to encourage cities to share their best practices with others, and for all to improve. A website will be developed to facilitate this. All cities are different. Some are advanced in a few or many subject areas. Some have much work to do. The aim is not to highlight failings, but instead to help a city identify areas of focus for improvement, and to learn from the best practices of others, as well as demonstrating and sharing their own best practices.
For the Final of the European Student Parliament in Copenhagen in June 2014, I created a preparation kit. My working group of around 10 young students from all over Europe was asked to develop new ideas for future mobility in cities.

Decades of economic growth and development along with better governance and nutrition-specific programmes had lifted hundreds of millions of people in Asia out of poverty, as well as starvation and malnutrition. However, due to the uneven development, while a large segment of Asian's population had changed their eating habits to over-nutrition diets and worrying about lifestyle diseases like diabetes, cancer and heart diseases, there are still some countries and regions suffering from lack of nutrition. For example, childhood malnutrition and stunting is still prevalent in South Asia, one Indian survey found that 21% of children suffer wasting, and a further 7.5% of children suffer it severely.

This report examines the burden of lung cancer in Latin America and how well countries in the region are addressing the challenge. Its particular focus is on 12 countries in Central and South America, chosen for various factors including size and level of economic development: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay.

Among the findings:
-In the past year, a third of the companies surveyed experienced a serious cyber-incident — one that disrupted operations, impaired financials and damaged reputations — and most placed high odds on another one in the next 12 months.

A survey from The Economist Intelligence Unit and sponsored by Lucidchart reveals some of the perceived causes and effects of these communication breakdowns. The survey, conducted from November 2017 to January 2018, included 403 senior executives, managers and junior staff at US companies divided equally and from companies with annual revenue of less than

Collectively, young entrepreneurs are innovative by nature and their thinking is an important source of growth and job creation across the world. Today, with digital tools in hand, leaders are better positioned to expand their businesses across borders, seize niche opportunities and shape the global economic future.
Yet, most of today’s young entrepreneurs want more than status and a global corporate footprint. Their ideas of success arise from powerful social, political and economic convictions.
To find out what really makes young innovators tick, The Economist Intelligence Unit, sponsored by FedEx, surveyed more than 500 of these young entrepreneurs around the globe about their motivations, ideals and priorities. Our survey respondents were between 25 and 50 years of age and all founders, owners or partners of firms with fewer than 500 employees. They are living in North America, Europe, Middle
East, India and Africa, Asia-Pacific, and Latin America. We surveyed them on matters of globalization, technology and social values.
We then compared their views with a similar survey of the general public in the same regions. Side by side, these surveys enabled us to differentiate the outlooks of today’s young and innovative entrepreneurs.
