Congestion charging schemes implemented in cities like London, Stockholm, Milan, and Singapore have led to reductions in traffic, improved air quality, and generated substantial revenue for transportation infrastructure. These schemes involve charging drivers a fee for entering designated areas, usually city centers, during peak traffic hours. Evaluation of existing schemes found they reduced traffic by 15-30% and journey times by 15-35% while raising billions in revenue. Public acceptance of the schemes has also been positive as drivers adjusted and public transit availability increased. Revenues have funded improvements to roads, bridges, and public transit systems, transforming urban transportation networks.

To combat the problem of traffic congestion, the Metro Vancouver Independent Mobility Pricing Commission has proposed congestion pricing.

These webinars will launch the network’s framework for taking a place-based approach and why this is critical if we are to hit a zero carbon pathway. These events are also an opportunity to hear from partners across the North about what this means to them and to discuss how to bring place-based decarbonisation to life.

Many cities are attempting to reduce congestion through innovative transport policies and projects. This report explores the challenges city leaders face in choosing the right combination of solutions to address their short- and long-term urban mobility challenges. It aims to provide direction on how city leaders can navigate through these challenges and how they can work together with community groups and the private sector to transform their cities for the future.

Last-mile delivery is the final stage in the network of courier, express, and parcel companies
(CEP). It is an entire ecosystem that brings a variety of goods to consumers’ doorsteps (or
very close). In 2016, we looked at the transport market – and in particular last-mile delivery –
from two industry perspectives: commercial vehicles (advanced industries sector) and CEP
(logistics sector). Our analyses revealed three main insights

Due to urbanization trends, and megacities, the main part of the last mile happens in urban areas. The cost of providing last-mile services accounts for around 40% of overall supply chain costs. This is more than double compared to any other operations, such as parceling or warehousing in a supply chain. It’s a challenge not just in terms of costs, but also in terms of environmental impact. Transportation in the last mile is accountable for around 25% of GHG emissions in urban areas, and it is expected a 32% jump in carbon emissions from urban delivery by 2030. Last-mile delivery is the most inefficient part of the supply chain, because of small order sizes, lack of consolidation, network conditions, short lead times, and many constantly changing and geographically dispersed locations.
