The Future at Five: Gendered aspirations of five-year-oldsEduSkills OECD
The OECD's International Early Learning and Child Well-Being Study asked more than 4 000 five-year-olds in England (UK) and Estonia what they want to be or do when they grow up.
We found that gender norms were clearly evident in their aspirations, with gender stereotyping particularly strong among boys.

AB 705 is placing large numbers of under-prepared students in collegiate courses. Support courses which incorporate the affective domain will increase success and retention.
Active Learning: Success, Retention and Engagement Onsite and OnlineFred Feldon
The lecture environment and online homework systems fail to capture the reasoning and higher-level thinking skills students can bring to quantitative problems. Regular and substantive interaction, collaboration, productive struggle, and non-routine questions that stimulate discussion lead to deeper understanding of concepts, applicability, and support of students' affective needs.
This is a talk I gave last week in Toronto that was geared towards discussing PBL Math with parents and answering some of their questions about the pedagogy.
Most schools offer parent portals so families can monitor their student's performance and attendance. Often they don't spend time working with families to understand what to look for and what to do if they have concerns. This session explores how schools can work with families to better use the parent portals available and build relationships that empower families to address any concerns that arise.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.

• Over 3500 students
dropout per year
• 9 students drop out
per day
Source: Education Statistics 2012-2013
7. More about dropouts…
• Dropouts are 20 times more likely to end up
in prison or jail than a college graduate.
(Sum, Khatiwada, & McLaughlin, 2009)
• Dropping out of school impacts students’
self-esteem and psychological well-being as
they discover that they lack the skills and
knowledge to fulfil their desires.
(Massachusetts Department of Elementary
and Secondary Education)
8. It gets worst...
According to the U.S. Bureau of
Justice
• 56% of federal inmates are
dropouts
• 67% of state inmates are
dropouts
• 69% of local jail inmates are
dropouts
9. Should you be worried?
Should we worried
about more children
dropping out of high
school?
The answer is YES.
10. Is your child at risk?
There is a high possibility
that our children might
commit a crime and end up
in prison if they dropout of
high school.
11. Summary so far…
• Dropouts are 20 times more
likely to end up in prison or jail
than a college school graduate.
(Sum, Khatiwada, &
McLaughlin, 2009)
• Dropouts who commit crime,
hurt people like you and me.
They also hurt innocent people
like children .
• 3500 students dropout per
year.

12. Are families at risk?
What would happen
to your family if your
child drops out and
become a criminal?
14. More information
• 70% of students who don’t pass
Algebra by the 9th grade drop
out.
(The California Dropout Research Project, 2008 )
• There is a clear link between
Dropping out and Algebra
15. Not “IF” but “WHEN”
• Clearly our children is at risk of
dropping out.
• Statistically, it is not a question
of “IF” more children will drop
out but “WHEN”.

17. Why do kids fail?
• Most children fail because
of Math Anxiety.
• Math Anxiety is when a
child is unwilling to
attempt math problems,
has a fear of math classes
and usually become
nervous in math classes.
18. Why do kids fail?
• Math anxiety interferes with
your child’s working memory
and prevents them from
concentrating in math class.
• Most of your child’s working
memory is focused dealing
with negative thoughts and
feelings towards math.
19. What are the symptoms?
Children who have math anxiety:
• Believes that he/she is incapable of doing
math.
• Have a negative attitude about math.
• Unable to sit still or focus on math
lectures.
• Have a fear of answering questions
incorrectly in class.
• Tend to compare their grades with their
peers.
• Worry about how their peers would react
if the give a wrong answer in class.
• They feel embarrassed, irritated,
frustrated, and fearful Source: Liberty University
20. More Information
• If a child has Math Anxiety it is
also more likely that he/she
might have test and social
anxiety as well. (Perina, 2002)
• Students who are anxious about
math are less likely to continue
working on a problem if they fail
to understand it the first time
Source: Liberty University
21. When does the symptoms start?
Source: Liberty University
• Some students experience Math Anxiety as
early as third or forth grade (Jackson &
Leffingwell 1999)
• Most math anxiety occurs in middle school
when students experience social pressures
(Perina, 2002)
• Freshman year at college can also cause
Math Anxiety for students who did not do
4 years of math in high school or who took
a year off between high school and
college.
22. Causes…
• Poor test grades.
• Inability to complete difficult assignments.
• Negative attitude towards math by
Parents.
• Negative attitude towards math by
Teachers.
• Complicated math books that are difficult
to understand.
• Lack of motivation.
• Children see their parents having a job and
doing well without math so they believe
that they can do the same.
Source: Liberty University
23. Harsh Reality
• Most employers are requiring that
candidates have great reasoning and
logical thinking skills that can ONLY be
developed through math
• Most blue collar jobs are requiring
employees to have reasoning skills
• HINT: Not because you(PARENTS) got a
job without math means that your child
will
• Chances are they WON’T
• The world is CHANGING
24. More Causes
• Gender biases: Many teachers
promote the false idea that females
cannot perform as well in math as
males(Jackson & Leffingwell 1999)
• Explain-Practice-Memorise approach
cause students to lose interest
…teachers need to be more creative
• Teachers insisting that there is only
one correct way to answer a problem
• Students have a misconception that
they must do math quickly; this
speed causes nervousness
25. What do you think?
• Is it possible that your child
might be experiencing Math
Anxiety?
26. There is Hope
A research was done on effects
of humour on math anxiety
and test performance by
researchers at Western Carolina
University, University of Iowa
and Western Michigan
University.
27. Research
• In the research, 3 sets of
students where asked to sit a
math test.
• They were all told that it was a
difficult math test.
• Group A was given funny
cartoon to read before the math
test
• Group B was given poems to
read before the math test
• Group C did the math test
without being given anything

Through humour, you
can soften some of the
worst blows that life
delivers and once you
find laughter, no matter
how painful your
situation might be you
can survive.
-Bill Cosby
31. What really happened?
• The humorous cartoons created
a positive state that was
incompatible with anxiety.
• The brain was temporarily free
from interference by anxiety so
it was able to focus on the math
problems and find solutions
Sample Cartoon
32. More solutions for Math Anxiety
• Have a positive attitude towards math and encourage your child
that he/she can do it.
• Help your child with difficult math problems by breaking them
down into simpler steps.
• Ensure that your child know the basics. Learning math is a
building block process, one step builds on another
• Make sure that the textbook your child is reading is simple and
easy in a language that they understand
• Make math fun, simple and cool
• Talk to your child about Math Anxiety and help them to
overcome it
• Motivate your child to continue trying after getting a math
problem incorrect
33. Summary so far
• Dropouts are 20 times more likely to end up in jail than
a college graduate
• 3500 students dropout per year
• Failure in Algebra is the #1 trigger of dropouts
• 70% of students who don’t pass Algebra by 9th grade
dropout
• Math Anxiety is one of the main reasons for Algebra
failure.
• Humour helps math anxiety.
34. So what do you think?
• If you are a loving parent who care for
your child’s future you would agree that
ensuring that your child’s Algebra grade
improves should be a priority.
• You would also agree that the best way
to help your child to succeed is to
remove Math Anxiety with cartoons
and humour.
• You would also agree that your child
cannot avoid Algebra if they want a
promising future.
35. Another important question
After learning the truth about
your child’s future and knowing
that it is not a question of “if” but
“when” they will dropout and end
up a criminal, you may agree that
you are now more concerned
about your child’s Algebra Grade?
36. Humour and Cartoon
After learning that humour and
cartoons helps to remove Math
Anxiety and opens the mind for
learning and problem solving you
are now guessing how you can
include humour and cartoon in
math.
37. What about books?
Do you think a fun book that
teaches math with humour and
cartoons will help your child to do
better at math?
38. If “Yes” you need to find the right
book?
What you should look for in a math book?
• It must have humour, cartoons and
jokes
• It must explain math terms in a simple
way
• It must breakdown difficult steps into
simple steps
• It must remove all complexities about
math
• Practice questions must be based on
what was explained to prevent
confusion
• Provides results
39. Where can you find math books?
• You can ask your child’s teacher
• You can check out different
centres that teach math
• You can ask your friends
• You can check the internet
• You can check the yellow pages
