• 1.3 million high school students
dropout per week in US (edweek.org)
• 30% of the unemployed in US are
high school dropouts (Bureau of Labor

• Dropouts are 20 times more likely to
end up in prison or jail than a
college graduate.(Sum, Khatiwada, & McLaughlin, 2009)
Market Problem
• Failure in Algebra is the #1 trigger of
dropouts in high school (Helfand, 2007)
• 70% of students who don’t pass
Algebra by the 9th grade drop out.

• 67% of CSEC students failed math in

• A 3 year study was done on
437 fifth grades to test the
impact of chess on math
grades.
• They were split into 3 groups
• Group A: traditional math
curriculum
• Group B: exposed to a little chess
• Group C: begun chess from 1st
grade

• Group C: grade
increased from 62% to
82%
• Group B: grade made
little improvement
• Group A: grades made
