The True Hero In Wuulf And Beowulf
As Walter Cronkite, a former CBS anchorman, once said, "In seeking truth you have to get both
sides of the story." In the epic poem Beowulf, the successful Danish warriors and their king,
Hrothgar, are heroically saved by Beowulf, the strongest, bravest man across all seas from Grendel's
twelve–year massacre. In the novel Grendel, by John Gardner, the plot unfolds similarly; however, it
is told through the perspective of Grendel, the antagonist in Beowulf. The significant difference in
perspectives poses the complex question to readers asking, "Who is the real monster?" In the epic
poem and novel, Hrothgar, the Danish King, is the true monster through his influence, corruption,
and unmoral actions.
Being the ultimate ruler, Hrothgar initiates his monstrous character by influencing his loyal warriors.
Although some may argue that the Danes are evil, Hrothgar molds and motivates their actions as
their respected king. Rising to power and fame, Hrothgar built Herot, a celebratory mead hall to
distribute treasure and feast with his warriors. Through success in battles, Hrothgar, "whose word
was obeyed all over the world," rewarded his loyal Danes with "his treasure–full hands" in Beowulf
(6). Receiving praise and craving eternal fame, the Danes followed Hrothgar's instructions at all
costs. Furthermore, the Danes are influenced by Hrothgar through the Shaper's songs. Describing
Herot, the Shaper "sang of a glorious mead–hall whose light would shine to the end of the

Beowulf: A Short Story
It was early morning and the sun was just rising. Beowulf had just arrived back home after a long
night pain and battling. He had just battled water monsters and grinded them to bits. He was ready to
take rest but suddenly he heard a knock at the door, it was one of his people, he said that Hrothgar
has summoned him. Beowulf quickly went to Hrothgar. Beowulf finally found Hrothgar. There was
silence before Beowulf broke it and said, "What is the reason I have been called so suddenly?".
Hrothgar started to speak,"We will speak about that but first tell me, how did the battle with the
water monsters go?" Beowulf replied, "It went well, I grinded them to bits. Though it was quite
challenging." Hrothgar spoke, "Oh that's good, but now another incident ... Show more content on

"Yes, I will always remember that." Beowulf replied. After that Beowulf and the men set out with
confidence. As they went storms of thunder hit while they went through forests. They took rests in
caves or under trees occasionally when they found a good spot. They decided it was a good idea to
take turns and keep watch in case there were any sorts of danger. After going through many
obstacles such as storms and not being able to find their way they finally reached the Pacific
NorthWest. They were tired from their journey, so they decided to take some rest before going to the
very top of the mountains. Once again they took turns to keep watch. The next morning not too long
after they had woken up, a wise man and his men came. The wise man spoke, "So...you must be
Beowulf and his men." Beowulf replied, "Yes, and you must be the wise man that told Hrothgar to
send us." The wise man answered, "Yes I am, be careful up there, but now we must be on our way."

Beowulf Leadership Analysis
In the fantasy world found within the story of Beowulf; Hrothgar, the wise king of the Danes, offers
Beowulf some important lessons of leadership. Hrothgar, recognizing Beowulf's nobility and
strength, talks to him about how he should act to be a good ruler when he becomes king. The
characteristics of good leadership that Hrothgar mentions still hold true today, through people like
politicians, and business executives. Hrothgar's sermon not only provides an insight into what
leaders like these should do, it aims to bring to light what leaders should not do.
To Hrothgar, a true leader should not be wicked to their people; rather, they should show kindness
and be loved by their people. While talking about a previous ruler of the Danes, Hrothgar tells
Beowulf that his rise in the world brought little joy to the Danish people, only death and destruction
(McArthur). In order to keep the people happy, it is important to be open to them and generous.
Beowulf does this when he becomes king of the Geats by becoming a ring–giver to his people
(Loughman). For example, after slaying the monster Grendel, Hrothgar rewards Beowulf, with a
victory gift, an embroidered banner; also breast–mail; and a sword carried high (Post). In today's
society, rewarding swords and armor to every staff member at a company is a bit outlandish,
nevertheless; business executives can take away from this by rewarding the work that the people of
their company put in, rather than ignoring the needs and lives

How Does Hrothgar Use Figurative Language In Beowulf
Over time, the individuals within Herot have become aware of the evils and menacing conditions
that have sprung from Grendel's and his mother environment. Unfortunately, Beowulf's boastful
attitude and past war experiences with numerous creatures has led him to undermine dangers of the
lair. During Hrothgar's speech to Beowulf, Hrothgar uses figurative language, vivid imagery, and
displeasing syntax to demonstrate how Grendel's environment is filled with treachery, hellish
components, and danger, creating a sense of fear and concern for Beowulf, which will allow him to
develop a humble attitude. The poem provides a description on how creatures that possess superior
qualities, similar to Beowulf, do not survive in Grendel's lair. Hrothgar uses distasteful syntax and
provides vivid examples to assert how creatures that contain superior characteristics and/or qualities
are tarnished by the menacing environment. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His example suggests that the influx of death, horrifying creatures, and abnormal physical features
consume the superior qualities that these individuals once attained. Also, these vivid examples
depict how the menacing environment alters the mindset of individuals who possess similar features
as Beowulf, implying how strength and superiority may not be adequate enough to survive.
Hrothgar describes the appearance of Grendel's lair to Beowulf, and from his vivid description the
audience learns about unpleasant aspects of the lair. Hrothgar produces a hellish image of the
environment, by describing the location as "windy," "secret," and "dark" (Lines 545 and

Beowulf: Book Vs Movie
Have you ever noticed how a movie can be very different from the book that it is supposed to
portray? Beowulf is an example of one of these types of movies. Although the movie covers the
general story of Beowulf in the book, it changes some key elements of the plot, shifts characters
roles, and contains differences in the setting. Throughout the start of the story it seems as if the
movie will be identical to the book, but as the plot progresses many scenes, settings, and roles
appear to be very different. Even though the movie twists the plot and applies new scenes that are
not found in the book, it still follows the correct sequence in which the general events are ordered.

In the book as well as the movie Beowulf brings fourteen men to the land of the Danes and defeats
Grendel. The first main difference is that in the book Grendel's mother only kills one Dane,
Aeschere. In the movie Grendel's mother slays all of Beowulf's men besides Wiglaf. At this time in
the book Wiglaf is not present with Beowulf and his men, but only at the final battle against the
dragon. In both the book and the movie Beowulf detaches Grendel's arm and his mother returns to
the hall for revenge. In the book Beowulf immediately follows Grendel's mother to the underwater
lair, but contrastingly in the movie Beowulf would have no knowledge of Grendel's mother unless
Hrothgar would not have told him. Beowulf kills Grendel's mother and returns to Geatland to rule in
the book, however in the movie Beowulf lies about killing Grendel's mother and stays to rule in
Denmark. Just as Beowulf brought Grendel's head back in the book, he also did so in the movie. The
book does not mention that Hrothgar was the son of Grendel or that Beowulf was the father of the
dragon. In the book as well as the movie Beowulf defeats the dragon and dies as the hero of the epic
even though he did it in a different way at a different place. The concluding difference includes
Beowulf's funeral. The book displays his funeral as a burial near the coast of the sea, but conversely
in the movie his body is put on a burning ship sent out into the

Hrothgar And Beowulf
Lord Hrothgar of Denmark, a relative of the colossal ruler Shield Sheafson, appreciates a prosperous
and fruitful rule. He assembles an awesome mead–corridor, called Heorot, where his warriors can
accumulate to drink, get endowments from their master, and tune in to stories sung by the scops, or
troubadours. Be that as it may, the happy clamor from Heorot rankles Grendel, a loathsome evil
presence who lives in the swamplands of Hrothgar's kingdom. Grendel threatens the Danes
consistently, slaughtering them and vanquishing their endeavors to battle back. The Danes endure
numerous times of dread, risk, and passing on account of Grendel. In the long run, be that as it may,
a youthful Geatish warrior named Beowulf knows about Hrothgar's situation. Roused by the test,
Beowulf sails to Denmark with a little organization of men, resolved to crush Grendel.
Hrothgar, who had once done an awesome support for Beowulf's dad Ecgtheow, acknowledges
Beowulf's offer to battle Grendel and holds a devour in the saint's respect. Amid the devour, a
jealous Dane named Unferth insults Beowulf and blames him for being unworthy of his notoriety.

danger is drawing nearer. Grendel's mom, a bog witch who lives in a destroy lake, comes to Heorot

counselors, before lurking without end. To vindicate Aeschere's demise, the organization goes to the
dinky marsh, where Beowulf jumps into the water and battles Grendel's mom in her submerged den.
He slaughters her with a sword fashioned for a goliath, at that point, discovering Grendel's cadaver,
executes it and conveys the head as a prize to Hrothgar. The Danish field is currently cleansed of its

Grendel's Presentation Of The Monster In 'Beowulf'
Beowulf is described as the most heroic man of the Anglo Saxons, he was important and needed by
his people, known as courageous and strong. He was their hero, but the movie shows a different
side.
Both the story and the poem tell the story of Beowulf sailing all the way from Sweden and is known
as the hero to all Danes when he kills a terrorizing monster named Grendel. Both Genres are based
in Denmark home to Danes.
The biggest differences between the movie and the poem are how the monsters are portrayed and
how Hrothgar is characterized, and also the role of women.
Unlike the novel, the monsters are portrayed differently in the movie. However, in the novel,
grendel represent something more. He was pure evil showing no remorse, angry toward mankind
and in the movie he's more sympathetic, baby like. Grendel's father was Hrothgar in the movie,
unlike the story he was the son of Cain. Secondly, the dragon in the movie is the son of Beowulf
which he goes after and his kingdom as well to kill and destroy everything he desires. The way the
monsters are portrayed seem like it tries to switch up the way we expect to see the movie, surprising
us with the way the monsters act in the movie being described ... Show more content on

For example, Hrothgar is messy and a drunk in the movie not showing any respect towards his wife

no one knowing, as he tells Beowulf that he would become king once Hrothgar time came to an end,
he then walks into his room and jumps off the balcony, committing suicide. Something that did not
happen in the poem, he sends off Beowulf so there were various differences how Hrothgar was
portrayed between the book and movie. Overall, this difference made the movie a bit more

Relationship Between Agamemnon And Beowulf
The Epic Journey of a Relationship
Many things can contribute to the greatness of a hero. A person can be determined as a hero by the
brave things they have done or how their actions have impacted others. In The Iliad by Homer,
translated by Richmond Lattimore, the Greek king Agamemnon loses his best warrior, Achilles, who
decides not to fight in the Trojan War. Agamemnon knows that the Greeks will be unable to win the
war without Achilles, whose strength cannot be matched by anyone else. In Beowulf by an
anonymous poet, translated by Burton Raffel, Beowulf is Hrothgar's best chance to defeat Grendel
and avenge the Danes who had previously tried and failed. Achilles and Beowulf can be viewed as
the servants of their kings, since they serve and protect their crown. The two kings' reliance on their
servitude emphasize the importance of Achilles and Beowulf, making the relationships between
Achilles and Agamemnon, and Beowulf and Hrothgar similar to each other. The relationships
between Achilles and Agamemnon, and Beowulf and Hrothgar show that kings play an important
role in contributing to the greatness of their servants. The kings rely on their servants' heroic
abilities. At the beginning of the story, Achilles is unhappy with Agamemnon because the king took
away his prize for himself. During an argument with Agamemnon, Achilles says, "Always the
greater part of the painful fighting is the work of / my hands; but when the time comes to distribute
the booty / yours

Imagery In Beowulf
The Old–English epic poem of Beowulf, officially written down somewhere around the year 1066
by the Beowulf poet, is one where you are persistently kept of the edge of your seat due to its
superior use of vivid phrases and imagery. In the Anglo–Saxon period in which the story takes place
bravery, heroic deeds, and loyalty to one another is paramount. Beowulf, a tenacious scandinavian
warrior, is the savior of a neighboring kingdom due to his aptness to slay the treacherous monsters
such as the nefarious Grendel and his mother. A truly remarkable feat is how the words and actions
of this poem are put to life in the movie. Though remarkable, the cinema didn't exactly correlate
with the poem. In fact the integrity of the poem almost seems diminished ... Show more content on

Generosity In Beowulf
Hrothgar Throughout his reign as the ruler of the Geats, Beowulf is a benevolent leader bringing

Danish people, only death and destruction. He tells Beowulf to learn from this and understand true
value. Hrothgar intends that this information can be carried on with Beowulf. Hrothgar was a brave
and strong–minded man. Much of these people's respect comes in response to hrothgar's generosity
to everyone. This generosity can be seen towards Beowulf, when the king gives his thanks for the
heroic deeds of the warrior. Hrothgar rewards Beowulf with priceless ... Show more content on

He was known to be a great warrior and king, but he is still was unable to stop Grendel from killing
his people. Although Hrothgar was a mighty warrior in his day, at the time when the epic story in
Beowulf takes place he is an old king, no longer able to defend his people against the demon
Grendel. But Hrothgar was a savior in the form of Beowulf who is prepared to aid him by defeating
the demons that stalk his land, but will not steal his throne. Even though Hrothgar lacks the strength
as a warrior that would be necessary to bring true security to his people, he practices another custom
that does help maintain his power. Hrothgar generously distributes rewards, including gold, armor,
and rings to the warriors who support him, both Dane and Geat. He can literally buy loyalty, even
when he can't force it in battle. King Hrothgar was not always a gentle lord. He mean seem like it
because he does not fight the monster. Hrothgar first conquered in war, resulting in the acquirement
of money and goods. Then as he aged he became braver and strong–minded. He also developed
loyalty through friendships, especially felt at the teary goodbye when Beowulf left. Hrothgar

Beowulf, More Siegmund or Hermond?
Beowulf, more Siegmund or Hermond?
In the story of Beowulf, Beowulf just killed Grendel and the story tellers were telling stories of two
different men. One was Hermod who was "granted greater strength than anyone" (Beowulf 1717).
He, "ignored all wise men's warnings,/Ruled only with courage" (Beowulf 907–908). In the end his
pride had lead him to exile and ultimately to his death. Siegmund was a courageous, brave, and
famous warrior who fought giants, monsters, and a treasure–rich dragon. His fame would last
beyond his lifetime. Although Hermod and Siegmund were two different types of people, Beowulf's
life reflects both at different times of his life. In parts of Beowulf, Beowulf's life relates more to

During the fight he is unable to defeat the dragon and realizes he must give his strength back and
that his life is over. At this point of the book Beowulf greatly resembles Hermod. Hermod 's story
had said, "he was once the mightiest/ Of men" (Beowulf 901), meaning he was a strong warrior. The
story said he also, "ignored all wise men's warnings, ruled only with courage" (Beowulf 907–908).
Hermod ignored all wise men's warnings about pride and ruled by his courage alone. Hermod's,
"vanity swelled him so vile and rank/ That he could hear no voices but his own" (Beowulf 911–912).
His pride was so great he could not hear anyone but himself. Showing that Hermod, like Beowulf,
didn't take wise men's advice. In the end, they both reach their defeat due to their pride and not
taking wise men's advice. In the story of Beowulf there are accounts of two men, Hermod and
Siegmund. Different points of Beowulf's life refect both of these men's lives. Beowulf, like
Siegmund, was a mighty warrior, fought many monsters, had fame beyond his life, and fought a

Compare And Contrast Hrothgar And Beowulf
Beowulf and Hrothgar are both great kings with responsibility to take care their people. Beowulf is a
great king because there has been peace and prosperity for fifty years in his village when he became
king. Hrothgar is a good king because he created the mead–hall and became successful, also
implying that he had wealth. They both have experiences in combat. Hrothgar has responsibility for

Animosity In Beowulf
Hrothgar, the ruler of the Danes, places the people of his city as the highest priority. Not being timid
to present emotions along with wisdom and admirability are certain qualities held by Hrothgar.
Additionally, he lacks vigor to physically combat his civilian enemies, as he displays the aspects of
an aging ruler. Hrothgar displays that he is not a careless king in terms of his people, showing
grievance to the victims of Grendel's hand, "Hrothgar, their lord, sat joyless/ In Herot, a mighty
prince mourning/The fate of his lost friends and companions," (Beowulf 44–46). Showing animosity
in Grendel's attacks, Hrothgar cries across the seas for assistance, wanting an end to the torment
Grendel has inflicted. "Twelve winters of grief for Hrothgar, king/of the Danes, sorrow heaped at his
door/by hell–forged hands. His misery leaped/the seas, was told, and sung in all/Men's ears,"
(Beowulf 62–66). When Beowulf arrives to assist Hrothgar with the occurring murders in Heorot,
Hrothgar explains what has happened in his kingdom, "My tongue grows heavy,/and my heart, when

Hrothgar In Beowulf
TV cameras have a knack for only picking up the good things world leaders do. These shots are
meant to paint someone like the US President in a positive light. It turns out even epics from Anglo–
Saxon times would do everything they could to make their kings seem great and generous, but as
with everything else there is a side not seen by the public eye. In the epic of Beowulf a king named
Hrothgar is seen on the outside as the greatest and most generous king the land had ever seen, but on
the inside he is much more human. Hrothgar like all great leaders comes with many flaws. He is
very similar to current and past world leaders and brings a new meaning to the word "great." Despite
being thought about in a positive light he certainly has his warts. These include his heavy drinking
habit, a lack of self control, and no desire whatsoever to be king of the Danes. ... Show more content

The early cantos in the textual iteration of Beowulf describe Hrothgar of this great and generous

none more so than his lovely wife Wealtheow. However in the film Hrothgar seems to be forcing
himself upon his wife, who doesn't seem to enjoy her marriage in the first place. During the films
interpretation of the party Hrothgar seems to be ridiculously intoxicated, slurring his speech and
stumbling all around Heorot. It is this drastic difference that makes a person realize that maybe

Comparing The Shaper, Hrothgar, And Beowulf
Oscar Wilde once said, "To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people exist, that is all." For
some people, this is true, whereas others squander their time and contribute nothing to society. As
for the three characters in Grendel, The Shaper, Hrothgar, and Beowulf, their lives do have a
meaning. The Shaper provides a solidification between ideas and man; Hrothgar offers a sense of

When Grendel watches Hrothgar first start out, he proves himself to be a great warlord. This
happens after the tree incident where Grendel first encounters human beings. Hrothgar showed what
he could do and how strong his men were. He then sent men to his neighbors every three months or
so to gather tribute from them. "He worked out a theory about what fighting was for, and now he no
longer fought with his six closest neighbors" (37). This is a necessity of a quality of a good king. He
knows how to gain power quickly. Hrothgar is smart to play to his advantages and bully his
neighbors and create an even bigger army to proclaim himself king eventually. Hrothgar proves to
be ambitious. He decides that as a testament to his greatness and everything he and his men have
accomplished, they will build a meadhall. "He would build a magnificent meadhall high on a hill...
to stand forever as a sign of the glory and justice of Hrothgar's Danes" (47). Hrothgar's ambition
shows to the men that he will cement a place to remember the great history of the Danes and all they
have accomplished. He also possesses the quality of an excellent negotiator. When his power starts
to fade, a king by the name of Hygmod begins to rise up against Hrothgar. Hrothgar takes his army
and goes to Hygmod's hall and confronts him. Hygmod offers his sister as a peace offering to which
Hrothgar accepts. "Come,

In parts of Beowulf, Beowulf's life relates more to
Siegmund. In the beginning ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Theme Of Reputation In Beowulf
Witten by an anonymous author, the poem Beowulf consists of several major themes. One of those
themes is reputation. Reputation is the acknowledgment by other people of some characteristic.
Although having a good reputation is very important to many people nowadays. It is also important
to people who lived many centuries ago. In the poem Beowulf, having a righteous reputation is very
important and greatly valued by many characters, especially to Danish people, Beowulf, Grendel,
and Grendel's mother. To begin with, the reader first notices the importance of reputation in the
poem when Beowulf and his twelve warriors land on the Danish shores. As they are getting down
from the ship, a Danish watcher sees them and goes up to them to see who they are. The lieutenant
asks Beowulf who he is, and why he is coming to his coast. Beowulf replies by saying, "We... follow
Higlac, my father was a famous soldier...men all over the earth...remember him." (156–163) Then,
the lieutenant figures out that Beowulf has a good reputation. Therefore, he allows Beowulf and his
men to enter the Danish shores, and he leads them to Hrothgar. This incident shows the reader that
reputation is very important, and if a character has a bad reputation, he would not be welcomed into
other kingdoms. Moreover, Beowulf meets Hrothgar, they start talking. Beowulf starts listing his
achievements and the things he had done. "I drove five great giants into chains / I swam... hunting

Comitatus In Beowulf
In Anglo–Saxon Literature, the term Comitatus was used to describe a mutually beneficial
relationship that compelled Kings to rule in consultation with their warriors called thanes. The code
of Comitatus was an integral part of a Vikings culture and honor. The three main parts of Comitatus
are kinship, oral tradition, and gift–giving. Beowulf lived and died by the unwritten code of
Comitatus in order to maintain his status as hero. Beowulf's social interactions and the fight with
Grendel, Grendel's mother, the dragon demonstrate the hero's lust for maintaining a good reputation
through the code of Comitatus.
The story of Beowulf begins with his quest to aid the kind of the Danes. Hrothgar built the great
mead–hall called Heorot. The mead–hall represents Hrothgar's success in building a powerful
military and social entity. The mead–hall" Meant to be a wonder of the world forever;"
(Beowulf.69–71) a place of light and warmth during the cold winter was attacked by a powerful
demon called Grendel. Grendel resented the happiness of his neighbors and attacked Heorot for
twelve winters leaving the hall empty for years. Once Beowulf learns of Hrothgar's problem with

Beowulf, a tale of a warrior who is graced with unworldly powers that comes to the rescue of
Hrothgar, the king of the Danes whose land is being invaded by monster named Grendel. This tale is
so famous they had to make it into both a poem and a movie. Though the movie had been derived
from the poem as most movies are there were many differences and similarities that stood out.
Usually when a book or poem gets made into a movie there are many differences and similarities.
That is one of the reasons why I was not surprised to see that the movie was very different from the
poem, this was due to the changes in the plot of the movie.
One big difference in the movie was that Hrothgar was never the father of Grendel. There is never
any mention of either Hrothgar or Beowulf ever being involved with or being by any way related to
Grendel or the dragon. While on the subject of fathers, Grendel's mother was never described as
being covered in gold and looking like Angelina Jolie, either. When reading the poem one would

In the poem, Beowulf is seen as being a very holy and courageous figure. But in the movie Beowulf
is not as holy as the Anglo–Saxon's meant him to be; he lies and takes the easy way out in the
movie. In the movie when he was speaking with Hrothgar, Beowulf tells Hrothgar that he killed
Grendel's mother. But in all reality it is not true in the movie but in the epic he truly does slay her in
her "underwater cave". Instead of killing her he had a sexual relationship with her leading her to
bear his child which in the end is found out to be the dragon which he kills but who also kills him.
By this point we pick up that Grendel is really the son of Hrothgar, we see the relief in Hrothgar
when Beowulf tell him that he has slain the

Beowulf as an Epic Hero
Beowulf as an epic hero
Beowulf is a poem that was written in Anglo–Saxon, between 700 and 1000 A.D., and is probably
one of the most important works of Anglo–Saxon literature. It tells the story of the heroic acts in the
life of our protagonist, Beowulf. It takes place in Scandinavia (Denmark and Sweden precisely),
around 500 A.D. Beowulf is a hero of the Geats who arrives in Denmark from Geatland to help the
king of the Danes, Hrothgar. Hrothgar enjoyed a successful and prosperous reign: he built a great
mead–hall, called Heorot, which mere purpose was to serve as a place where warriors could gather
to drink, tell stories and enjoy the songs of the scops or bards. But, these gatherings were quite loud
and jubilant, and they had ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The definition of a hero implied facing the impossible with only courage and strength, and even if
that resulted in his death, he would consider it a most honourable way to die. After he wins the fight
against Grendel, he has the option to stay back while Grendel 's mother tries to avenge him. But
Beowulf was a great warrior, and he knew that if Grendel 's mother wanted someone to pay for her
son 's death, it must be him, the one who killed Grendel in the first place. However, he doesn 't go to
her lake just to let her have her revenge; he is determined to free Denmark from the horrifying
monsters: first Grendel, and now his mother. Another key factor in his decision is the fact that
Grendel 's mother kills Aeschere, a man of Hrothgar 's. But this is not all of Beowulf 's greatness as
a hero. He was a loyal warrior, never betraying or letting down his lord, Hygelac. Even after
Hygelac 's death, he showed loyalty and respect to both his king and the throne, and supported the
son of Hygelac in becoming the new king of the Geats. However, after a while, Hygelac 's son died,
and Beowulf became the new king. His reign brought peace and prosperity to Geatland, and this
lasted for fifty years, until one day, a dragon was awoken and threatened to burn down the country.
Even though he was not the same young and strong warrior anymore, Beowulf was still brave. This
shows another phase of Beowulf 's life: in his youth, he was a warrior

Comparing Beowulf And Hrothgar's
In Beowulf, both Hrothgar, king of the Spear–Danes, and Beowulf, the Geatish hero are attributed in
their society as kings. These two characters' role in their society is a major focus. Both Beowulf and
Hrothgar have ruled as king effectively. Beowulf and Hrothgar's job performances and
understanding of their duties, responsibilities, and privileges differ. Hrothgar, a legendary Danish
king, clearly comprehends his responsibility to protect his country and its people. Beowulf, a
previous Geatish hero who has recently been inaugurated as king, is unsure of what his duties are.
During the story, Beowulf transforms from a great warrior to a king. This maturation involves more
than just physical strength. Beowulf's ascendancy requires him to fulfill responsibilities that he did
not have when he was a Geatish hero. When becoming king, Beowulf understands that there are
many responsibilities that kingship entails. Beowulf understands that it is his duty to protect the ...

In the Anglo–Saxon epic poem, Beowulf, a myriad of virtues define the warrior Beowulf. Coming
from his homeland, Geatland, he arrives in the land of the Danes resolute in helping King Hrothgar

centuries, the Scandinavian feudal government exercised the honor system of comitatus. Comitatus
consisted of thanes pledging their lives to defend their king, in exchange for the king's rewards.

These include his heavy drinking
habit, a lack of self control, and no desire whatsoever to be king of the Danes. ... Show more content

depiction are incredibly different. It comes when Hrothgar throws a party the night before Beowulf's
battle with Grendel. In the cantos Hrothgar seems to be in control and enjoying everyone's company,
none more so than his lovely wife Wealtheow.

Cultures as well as individuals have differed in their definitions of a successful king for generations.
The epic poem Beowulf introduces two kings: Beowulf, the protagonist of the story, the famed hero
who slays monsters with his bare hands and then becomes king of the Geats, and Hrothgar, the king
of the Danish court, who is grateful for Beowulf 's help in overcoming Grendel and his mother. A

Beowulf, the hero becomes king, but still behaves like a hero by going out himself to kill a dragon,
burning the homes of his people. Wiglaf, one of his comrades says,
"Beloved Beowulff, summon your strength, remember the vow you made of old in the years of

Gift Giving In Beowulf
Seamus Heaney's Beowulf is a translated literary work from the Anglo–Saxon era which puts
emphasis on countless themes, such as, being a warrior, religion and wealth. Over the course of the
poem, the speaker puts emphasis on material possessions, which is shown through the act of gift

generous attitude however, it is evident that the purpose of this act is purely selfish. Parts of the
poem like, Hrothgar giving Beowulf gold and treasures after his conquests, Grendel not wanting to
pay a wergild, and Hrothgar paying money to the Wulfings for Beowulf's father are all examples of
this.
For insistence, the way in which Hrothgar gives Beowulf all those treasures appear to be out of
respect and honor, however, this could be a manner to gain and retain his support. The King presents
Beowulf with numerous treasures that vary between gold and horses, armor and swords, and he even
presents a reward to the other men who fought with him. The following quotation explains
Beowulf's thought on the matter. "So Beowulf drank his drink at ease; / it was hardly a shame to be
showered with such gifts / in front of the hall–troops." (Heaney 1024–1026) Beowulf gladly accepts
the gifts that are being thrust upon him, without putting much thought into it and thinking only about
his reputation. This is shown through the speaker's word choice and the carefree tone of the lines.
Regardless of that, it is

Is Beowulf A Successful Hero Or King
When people think of a successful king, they often associate them with the hero. However, many
fail to notice that no one could own both the title king and the hero at the same time; they need to
give up either one of the titles to become a truly successful hero or king. In the famous epic poem,
Beowulf, despite Hrothgar rules Danes, another hero, Beowulf, shows up to solve Danes' problem
while the true Danes king sits on his throne and simply gives all honor and credit to Beowulf. To
become a truly successful leader, one must know to put down his honor and fame for his people's
safety. Furthermore, a ruler who cares about his people in every aspect fits the title king, not a

While Beowulf has not defeated Grendel yet, Hrothgar warmly welcomes Beowulf and makes him
as comfortable as possible to prepare his fight with Grendel, because Hrothgar understands clearly
that without Beowulf's help, he cannot protect his people.
Continuing, even though he did not defeat Grendel by himself, Hrothgar demonstrates the wisdom a
king needs to rule his kingdom. At the arrival of Beowulf's troops, Hrothgar knew distinctly that he
needed to gain their loyalty in order to let Beowulf fight Grendel, so he generously gave plenty of
drinks and he even brought out his own wife to please them, "...the Helming woman went on her
rounds, / queenly and dignified, decked out in rings, / offering the goblet to all ranks," (620–622).
Hrothgar utilizes his tactful mind to gain these warriors' trust, even though he could not fight
anymore like Beowulf, the Danes' king's wisdom remains and makes him qualify as a king.
Furthermore, Hrothgar gives advice to Beowulf, which reveals the insight Hrothgar has and the
great worldview he yields. He says to Beowulf, "...beware of that trap. / Choose, dear Beowulf, the
better part, / Eternal rewards. Do not give way to pride." (1758–1760). In these lines, Hrothgar
warns Beowulf about the danger pride wields, which can infiltrate the strongest warrior; he pointed
out the most dangerous trap, which people in that time period ignored easily when they become a
leader. Overall, Hrothgar gives a great example of a true

Hrothgar Quotes
Beowulf is an epic about a hero who takes on great challenges and adventures. This story dates back
to the Anglo–Saxon period. The character Beowulf, encounters the virtues of the Anglo–Saxon
culture and beliefs. The traits the he encounters from the Anglo–Saxon society are strength, bravery,
courage, and the desire to help the helpless. The character of Hrothgar establishes to Beowulf how
to be a successful king. Hrothgar is a mentor and father figure to beowulf about how to become a
wise ruler. Hrothgar's old age and experience at being king helps beowulf become a successful king.
Beowulf mentioned "right gladly I grant your wishes–but first, one word of warning. That sword
you spoke of–it will avail nothing with Grendel, whose life is proof against all weapons whatsoever,
wrought by man. You must go for him with your hands, your bare hands"(Page 6). Hrothgar
demonstrates experience to Beowulf in this quote by telling him Grendel can't get hurt by a sword.
If it were not for Hrothgar, Beowulf would have gone to fight Grendel with a sword and probably
would have gotten killed. Beowulf showed signs of shock because he thought he could have not

Beowulf's strength is exemplified many times in the story. Beowulf was said to have "the strength of

Compare And Contrast Hrothgar And Beowulf
The epic poem Beowulf translated by Seamus Heaney, presents two heroic kings that have very
clear differences on how they overcome challenges but they still keep their people in safe keepings.
Hrothgar and Beowulf are admired by their people because they both show strong characteristics of
what an Anglo–Saxon king should do or be.
The king of Danes, Hrothgar, was first introduced as an accomplished and wise king. He comes to
be well known as a young king when he protected Beowulf's now departed father, Ecgtheow.
Hrothgar wergild peace with Ecgtheow's enemies so that the bloody feud would end. With Hrothgar
doing this generous deed to help Ecgtheow and his kingdom out Beowulf devotes his assistance in
the beginning of the poem. One thing that makes Hrothgar a good king is that he always seems to
stay true to his word, as is told at the beginning, "the king kept well his pledge and promise to deal
out gifts, rings at the banquet" (53–55). It was clear that Hrothgar was an exceptional military leader
with his bravery and strength but he is aged now and cannot fight the same as he used to. The Danes
are then faced with an evil and wicked monster, Grendel, who terrorizes his realm. Beowulf asks
Hrothgar if he could fight this battle for him to pay back his family debt and Hrothgar agreed.
Hrothgar makes a promise to reward Beowulf if he succeeds in killing the monster Grendel. He
says, "For his gallant courage I'll load him with gifts.... shall know not want of treasure or wealth

Comparing Beowulf And Grendal's Mother
Beowulf is a great Thane/Warrior from Geatland who comes across the sea over to Daneland to help
the King of the Danes Hrothgar to get rid of his monster Grendal, and his mother. Beowulf ends up
sleeping withe Grendal's mother. Hrothgar Even Hrothgar had slept with Grendal's mother. Later on
Hrothgar and Beowulf had regretted sleeping with her. Why did Hrothgar and Beowulf both regret

Beowulf is a Geat warrior from Geatland. Beowulf is known as the monster slayer. Stories had went

why he is knob as the monster slayer. When he later had heard from across the sea that Hrothgar,

Many years later, A dragon had came and attacked the village. Only right after one of Unferth's

Beowulf Comparison
When reading the poem one would
think of Grendel's mother as being a monster, but when watching the movie Grendel's mother is

In the poem, Beowulf is seen as being a very holy and courageous figure. But in the movie Beowulf
is not as holy as the Anglo–Saxon's meant him to be; he lies and takes the easy way out in the

How Does Grendel Cause Hrothgar's Downfall
Character development is very important in character–driven literature, where stories focus not on
events, but on individual personalities. Character development is a literary device that is used step
by step in literature to highlight and explain the details about a character in a story. And the stories
that move us most, the ones that stick inside years later, are those inhabited by characters we can
connect with and admire. And no characters resonate more than those who in the course of a story
learned how to either give in or overcome their own flaws and weaknesses to which they are
remembered for. The rocky path of personal growth and development a character undergoes in a

It's clear that Grendel is a major cause of Hrothgar's suffering–there are only so many times you can
clean up the blood and rebuild your meadhall before you feel a little weak and broken. But the
factors contributing to Hrothgar's downfall are more complex. Grendel's razor–sharp assessments hit
the nail right on the head: "He had in his youth the strength of seven men. Not now. He has nothing
left but the power of his mind–and no pleasure there: a case of knives. The civilization he meant to

his peace of mind as well. The king has become trapped by everything he worked so hard to

for younger, ambitious warlords. His beautiful wife, a peace offering from a young and resentful
lesser king, might become a point of contention in the future. He also knows that his young sons will

King Wuulf's Influence Of The Hero Of Beowulf
In the beginning of the poem "Beowulf", one can recognize the excitement that the king expresses
when Beowulf arrives to help defend the land of the Danes. The king of land, Hrothgar is grateful
when Beowulf states that he is going to fight off Grendel, but the king warns Beowulf and urges him
to not become a warrior and ruler that expresses too much pride in himself. Hrothgar continues on
and insists that Beowulf remains peaceful, yet ready to battle, but not to become to driven by
violence and too war–minded. Although at the time Beowulf expressed interest and seemed to agree
with the advice that was being handed to him by King Hrothgar, he later goes on the ignore it and he
will then find himself in some serious trouble down the line, due to these flaws that he possess as a
warrior. Although Beowulf was a successful warrior, he diminished his legacy as a king and should
have truly listened to the advice that was given to him by Hrothgar to help ensure his success and
legacy as a future king. Hrothgar states to Beowulf "[c]hoose, dear Beowulf, the better part, eternal
rewards. Do not give way to pride. For a brief while your strength is in bloom but it fades quickly;
and soon there will follow illness or the sword you lay low..." (Beowulf, 1759–1768). This quotes

The True Hero In Wuulf And Beowulf

  • 1. The True Hero In Wuulf And Beowulf As Walter Cronkite, a former CBS anchorman, once said, "In seeking truth you have to get both sides of the story." In the epic poem Beowulf, the successful Danish warriors and their king, Hrothgar, are heroically saved by Beowulf, the strongest, bravest man across all seas from Grendel's twelve–year massacre. In the novel Grendel, by John Gardner, the plot unfolds similarly; however, it is told through the perspective of Grendel, the antagonist in Beowulf. The significant difference in perspectives poses the complex question to readers asking, "Who is the real monster?" In the epic poem and novel, Hrothgar, the Danish King, is the true monster through his influence, corruption, and unmoral actions. Being the ultimate ruler, Hrothgar initiates his monstrous character by influencing his loyal warriors. Although some may argue that the Danes are evil, Hrothgar molds and motivates their actions as their respected king. Rising to power and fame, Hrothgar built Herot, a celebratory mead hall to distribute treasure and feast with his warriors. Through success in battles, Hrothgar, "whose word was obeyed all over the world," rewarded his loyal Danes with "his treasure–full hands" in Beowulf (6). Receiving praise and craving eternal fame, the Danes followed Hrothgar's instructions at all costs. Furthermore, the Danes are influenced by Hrothgar through the Shaper's songs. Describing Herot, the Shaper "sang of a glorious mead–hall whose light would shine to the end of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Beowulf: A Short Story It was early morning and the sun was just rising. Beowulf had just arrived back home after a long night pain and battling. He had just battled water monsters and grinded them to bits. He was ready to take rest but suddenly he heard a knock at the door, it was one of his people, he said that Hrothgar has summoned him. Beowulf quickly went to Hrothgar. Beowulf finally found Hrothgar. There was silence before Beowulf broke it and said, "What is the reason I have been called so suddenly?". Hrothgar started to speak,"We will speak about that but first tell me, how did the battle with the water monsters go?" Beowulf replied, "It went well, I grinded them to bits. Though it was quite challenging." Hrothgar spoke, "Oh that's good, but now another incident ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "Yes, I will always remember that." Beowulf replied. After that Beowulf and the men set out with confidence. As they went storms of thunder hit while they went through forests. They took rests in caves or under trees occasionally when they found a good spot. They decided it was a good idea to take turns and keep watch in case there were any sorts of danger. After going through many obstacles such as storms and not being able to find their way they finally reached the Pacific NorthWest. They were tired from their journey, so they decided to take some rest before going to the very top of the mountains. Once again they took turns to keep watch. The next morning not too long after they had woken up, a wise man and his men came. The wise man spoke, "So...you must be Beowulf and his men." Beowulf replied, "Yes, and you must be the wise man that told Hrothgar to send us." The wise man answered, "Yes I am, be careful up there, but now we must be on our way." • 13. Beowulf Leadership Analysis In the fantasy world found within the story of Beowulf; Hrothgar, the wise king of the Danes, offers Beowulf some important lessons of leadership. Hrothgar, recognizing Beowulf's nobility and strength, talks to him about how he should act to be a good ruler when he becomes king. The characteristics of good leadership that Hrothgar mentions still hold true today, through people like politicians, and business executives. Hrothgar's sermon not only provides an insight into what leaders like these should do, it aims to bring to light what leaders should not do. To Hrothgar, a true leader should not be wicked to their people; rather, they should show kindness and be loved by their people. While talking about a previous ruler of the Danes, Hrothgar tells Beowulf that his rise in the world brought little joy to the Danish people, only death and destruction (McArthur). In order to keep the people happy, it is important to be open to them and generous. Beowulf does this when he becomes king of the Geats by becoming a ring–giver to his people (Loughman). For example, after slaying the monster Grendel, Hrothgar rewards Beowulf, with a victory gift, an embroidered banner; also breast–mail; and a sword carried high (Post). In today's society, rewarding swords and armor to every staff member at a company is a bit outlandish, nevertheless; business executives can take away from this by rewarding the work that the people of their company put in, rather than ignoring the needs and lives ... • 17. How Does Hrothgar Use Figurative Language In Beowulf Over time, the individuals within Herot have become aware of the evils and menacing conditions that have sprung from Grendel's and his mother environment. Unfortunately, Beowulf's boastful attitude and past war experiences with numerous creatures has led him to undermine dangers of the lair. During Hrothgar's speech to Beowulf, Hrothgar uses figurative language, vivid imagery, and displeasing syntax to demonstrate how Grendel's environment is filled with treachery, hellish components, and danger, creating a sense of fear and concern for Beowulf, which will allow him to develop a humble attitude. The poem provides a description on how creatures that possess superior qualities, similar to Beowulf, do not survive in Grendel's lair. Hrothgar uses distasteful syntax and provides vivid examples to assert how creatures that contain superior characteristics and/or qualities are tarnished by the menacing environment. ... His example suggests that the influx of death, horrifying creatures, and abnormal physical features consume the superior qualities that these individuals once attained. Also, these vivid examples depict how the menacing environment alters the mindset of individuals who possess similar features as Beowulf, implying how strength and superiority may not be adequate enough to survive. Hrothgar describes the appearance of Grendel's lair to Beowulf, and from his vivid description the audience learns about unpleasant aspects of the lair. • 21. Beowulf: Book Vs Movie Have you ever noticed how a movie can be very different from the book that it is supposed to portray? Beowulf is an example of one of these types of movies. Although the movie covers the general story of Beowulf in the book, it changes some key elements of the plot, shifts characters roles, and contains differences in the setting. Throughout the start of the story it seems as if the movie will be identical to the book, but as the plot progresses many scenes, settings, and roles appear to be very different. Even though the movie twists the plot and applies new scenes that are not found in the book, it still follows the correct sequence in which the general events are ordered. In the book Beowulf and fourteen of his men travel to the land of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the book as well as the movie Beowulf brings fourteen men to the land of the Danes and defeats Grendel. The first main difference is that in the book Grendel's mother only kills one Dane, Aeschere. In the movie Grendel's mother slays all of Beowulf's men besides Wiglaf. At this time in the book Wiglaf is not present with Beowulf and his men, but only at the final battle against the dragon. In both the book and the movie Beowulf detaches Grendel's arm and his mother returns to the hall for revenge. In the book Beowulf immediately follows Grendel's mother to the underwater lair, but contrastingly in the movie Beowulf would have no knowledge of Grendel's mother unless Hrothgar would not have told him. Beowulf kills Grendel's mother and returns to Geatland to rule in the book, however in the movie Beowulf lies about killing Grendel's mother and stays to rule in Denmark. Just as Beowulf brought Grendel's head back in the book, he also did so in the movie. The book does not mention that Hrothgar was the son of Grendel or that Beowulf was the father of the dragon. In the book as well as the movie Beowulf defeats the dragon and dies as the hero of the epic even though he did it in a different way at a different place. The concluding difference includes Beowulf's funeral. The book displays his funeral as a burial near the coast of the sea, but conversely in the movie his body is put on a burning ship sent out into the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 29. Grendel's Presentation Of The Monster In 'Beowulf' Beowulf is described as the most heroic man of the Anglo Saxons, he was important and needed by his people, known as courageous and strong. He was their hero, but the movie shows a different side. Both the story and the poem tell the story of Beowulf sailing all the way from Sweden and is known as the hero to all Danes when he kills a terrorizing monster named Grendel. Both Genres are based in Denmark home to Danes. The biggest differences between the movie and the poem are how the monsters are portrayed and how Hrothgar is characterized, and also the role of women. Unlike the novel, the monsters are portrayed differently in the movie. However, in the novel, grendel represent something more. He was pure evil showing no remorse, angry toward mankind and in the movie he's more sympathetic, baby like. Grendel's father was Hrothgar in the movie, unlike the story he was the son of Cain. Secondly, the dragon in the movie is the son of Beowulf which he goes after and his kingdom as well to kill and destroy everything he desires. The way the monsters are portrayed seem like it tries to switch up the way we expect to see the movie, surprising us with the way the monsters act in the movie being described ... • 33. Relationship Between Agamemnon And Beowulf The Epic Journey of a Relationship Many things can contribute to the greatness of a hero. A person can be determined as a hero by the brave things they have done or how their actions have impacted others. In The Iliad by Homer, translated by Richmond Lattimore, the Greek king Agamemnon loses his best warrior, Achilles, who decides not to fight in the Trojan War. Agamemnon knows that the Greeks will be unable to win the war without Achilles, whose strength cannot be matched by anyone else. In Beowulf by an anonymous poet, translated by Burton Raffel, Beowulf is Hrothgar's best chance to defeat Grendel and avenge the Danes who had previously tried and failed. Achilles and Beowulf can be viewed as the servants of their kings, since they serve and protect their crown. The two kings' reliance on their servitude emphasize the importance of Achilles and Beowulf, making the relationships between Achilles and Agamemnon, and Beowulf and Hrothgar similar to each other. The relationships between Achilles and Agamemnon, and Beowulf and Hrothgar show that kings play an important role in contributing to the greatness of their servants. The kings rely on their servants' heroic abilities. At the beginning of the story, Achilles is unhappy with Agamemnon because the king took away his prize for himself. During an argument with Agamemnon, Achilles says, "Always the greater part of the painful fighting is the work of / my hands; but when the time comes to distribute the booty / yours ... Imagery In Beowulf The Old–English epic poem of Beowulf, officially written down somewhere around the year 1066 by the Beowulf poet, is one where you are persistently kept of the edge of your seat due to its superior use of vivid phrases and imagery. In the Anglo–Saxon period in which the story takes place bravery, heroic deeds, and loyalty to one another is paramount. Beowulf, a tenacious scandinavian warrior, is the savior of a neighboring kingdom due to his aptness to slay the treacherous monsters such as the nefarious Grendel and his mother. Mentioning the swimming race reassures that indeed Beowulf is indeed mortal and capable of defeat comparatively than displaying him as immortal. Generosity In Beowulf Hrothgar Throughout his reign as the ruler of the Geats, Beowulf is a benevolent leader bringing peace and power to his nation as Hrothgar instructs him to do after the great warrior defeats Grendel's mother. Hrothgar relates to him as "King of the Danes", who brought little joy to the Danish people, only death and destruction. He tells Beowulf to learn from this and understand true value. Hrothgar intends that this information can be carried on with Beowulf. Hrothgar was a brave and strong–minded man. But Hrothgar was a savior in the form of Beowulf who is prepared to aid him by defeating the demons that stalk his land, but will not steal his throne. Even though Hrothgar lacks the strength as a warrior that would be necessary to bring true security to his people, he practices another custom that does help maintain his power. Hrothgar generously distributes rewards, including gold, armor, and rings to the warriors who support him, both Dane and Geat. He can literally buy loyalty, even when he can't force it in battle. It turns out even epics from Anglo– Saxon times would do everything they could to make their kings seem great and generous, but as with everything else there is a side not seen by the public eye. In the epic of Beowulf a king named Hrothgar is seen on the outside as the greatest and most generous king the land had ever seen, but on the inside he is much more human. Hrothgar like all great leaders comes with many flaws. He is very similar to current and past world leaders and brings a new meaning to the word "great." Despite being thought about in a positive light he certainly has his warts. These include his heavy drinking habit, a lack of self control, and no desire whatsoever to be king of the Danes. ... In the cantos Hrothgar seems to be in control and enjoying everyone's company, none more so than his lovely wife Wealtheow. However in the film Hrothgar seems to be forcing himself upon his wife, who doesn't seem to enjoy her marriage in the first place. For some people, this is true, whereas others squander their time and contribute nothing to society. As for the three characters in Grendel, The Shaper, Hrothgar, and Beowulf, their lives do have a meaning. The Shaper provides a solidification between ideas and man; Hrothgar offers a sense of leadership and ambition to his fellow men and Beowulf proves his is merely a mindless killing machine. "He worked out a theory about what fighting was for, and now he no longer fought with his six closest neighbors" (37). This is a necessity of a quality of a good king. He knows how to gain power quickly. Hrothgar is smart to play to his advantages and bully his neighbors and create an even bigger army to proclaim himself king eventually. Hrothgar proves to be ambitious. He decides that as a testament to his greatness and everything he and his men have accomplished, they will build a meadhall. • 89. Comitatus In Beowulf In Anglo–Saxon Literature, the term Comitatus was used to describe a mutually beneficial relationship that compelled Kings to rule in consultation with their warriors called thanes. The code of Comitatus was an integral part of a Vikings culture and honor. The three main parts of Comitatus are kinship, oral tradition, and gift–giving. Beowulf lived and died by the unwritten code of Comitatus in order to maintain his status as hero. Beowulf's social interactions and the fight with Grendel, Grendel's mother, the dragon demonstrate the hero's lust for maintaining a good reputation through the code of Comitatus. The story of Beowulf begins with his quest to aid the kind of the Danes. Hrothgar built the great mead–hall called Heorot. The mead–hall represents Hrothgar's success in building a powerful military and social entity. The mead–hall" Meant to be a wonder of the world forever;" (Beowulf.69–71) a place of light and warmth during the cold winter was attacked by a powerful demon called Grendel. Though the movie had been derived from the poem as most movies are there were many differences and similarities that stood out. Usually when a book or poem gets made into a movie there are many differences and similarities. That is one of the reasons why I was not surprised to see that the movie was very different from the poem, this was due to the changes in the plot of the movie. One big difference in the movie was that Hrothgar was never the father of Grendel. Beowulf as an Epic Hero Beowulf as an epic hero Beowulf is a poem that was written in Anglo–Saxon, between 700 and 1000 A.D., and is probably one of the most important works of Anglo–Saxon literature. It tells the story of the heroic acts in the life of our protagonist, Beowulf. It takes place in Scandinavia (Denmark and Sweden precisely), around 500 A.D. Beowulf is a hero of the Geats who arrives in Denmark from Geatland to help the king of the Danes, Hrothgar. Hrothgar enjoyed a successful and prosperous reign: he built a great mead–hall, called Heorot, which mere purpose was to serve as a place where warriors could gather to drink, tell stories and enjoy the songs of the scops or bards. But Beowulf was a great warrior, and he knew that if Grendel 's mother wanted someone to pay for her son 's death, it must be him, the one who killed Grendel in the first place. However, he doesn 't go to her lake just to let her have her revenge; he is determined to free Denmark from the horrifying monsters: first Grendel, and now his mother. Another key factor in his decision is the fact that Grendel 's mother kills Aeschere, a man of Hrothgar 's. But this is not all of Beowulf 's greatness as a hero. He was a loyal warrior, never betraying or letting down his lord, Hygelac. Even after Hygelac 's death, he showed loyalty and respect to both his king and the throne, and supported the son of Hygelac in becoming the new king of the Geats. However, after a while, Hygelac 's son died, and Beowulf became the new king. His reign brought peace and prosperity to Geatland, and this lasted for fifty years, until one day, a dragon was awoken and threatened to burn down the country. Coming from his homeland, Geatland, he arrives in the land of the Danes resolute in helping King Hrothgar defeat an evil monster, Grendel. Beowulf is an impressive, strong warrior who will triumphantly defeat Grendel; moreover, he will demonstrate how one must seek glory before death, a legacy. A man's reputation and his lineage is exceedingly important in the patriarchal society Beowulf lives in. Consequently, through his code of honor, loyalty and pride, he leads in battle and conquers his enemies, acquires fortunes, gains land and all the treasures imaginable. He will encounter three battles that will depict his character and his worth. The rich manner with which the poem describes these events demonstrate Beowulf's prowess. Beowulf is the epitome of what a hero should aspire to be, a man of honor, loyalty and pride to leave a remarkable legacy. During the fifth and sixth centuries, the Scandinavian feudal government exercised the honor system of comitatus. Comitatus consisted of thanes pledging their lives to defend their king, in exchange for the king's rewards. These rewards consisted of protection, land, treasure and perchance a title. These include his heavy drinking habit, a lack of self control, and no desire whatsoever to be king of the Danes. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The early cantos in the textual iteration of Beowulf describe Hrothgar of this great and generous king. A whole column is used to describe his generous deeds, such as harboring Beowulf's father in his darkest hour. There's one scene in particular in which the cantos depiction and the movie's depiction are incredibly different. It comes when Hrothgar throws a party the night before Beowulf's battle with Grendel. In the cantos Hrothgar seems to be in control and enjoying everyone's company, none more so than his lovely wife Wealtheow. However in the film Hrothgar seems to be forcing himself upon his wife, who doesn't seem to enjoy her marriage in the first place. During the films interpretation of the party Hrothgar seems to be ridiculously intoxicated, slurring his speech and stumbling all around Heorot. It is this drastic difference that makes a person realize that maybe Hrothgar is not as great as it seems, but that's not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 125. Comparison of Hrothgar and Beowulf as Kings. What makes a "well loved lord" (20), an "honored prince" (88) or a "leader beloved" (1827)? Cultures as well as individuals have differed in their definitions of a successful king for generations. The epic poem Beowulf introduces two kings: Beowulf, the protagonist of the story, the famed hero who slays monsters with his bare hands and then becomes king of the Geats, and Hrothgar, the king of the Danish court, who is grateful for Beowulf 's help in overcoming Grendel and his mother. A king received respect for wealth, fame, and warriors, during the time in which the poem Beowulf takes place. However, a king should go beyond these basic "needs" and become one with his people. This is achievable by depending on one 's people instead of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Beowulf boasts, "With Grendel, the fearful fiend, single–handed I 'll settle the strife!...with hand– grip only I 'll grapple with Grendel" (329–330, 342). Although Beowulf "found that never before had he felt in any man other in all the earth a mightier hand–grip; his mood was humbled, his courage fled" (568–570), which means he lost his courage for a moment, he proceeds to overcome his fears and not only kill Grendel, but just as he has promised, kill him unarmed. Later on in Beowulf, the hero becomes king, but still behaves like a hero by going out himself to kill a dragon, burning the homes of his people. Wiglaf, one of his comrades says, "Beloved Beowulff, summon your strength, remember the vow you made of old in the years of youth not to allow your glory to lessen as long as you lived. With resolute heart, and dauntless daring, defend your life with all your force." (1589–1595) Beowulf does not keep to these words, which state that he should not let himself be overtaken by the need for glory, and therefore risk his life. Beowulf is not convinced, and is killed by the dragon. After he dies, Wiglaf speaks again, "We could not persuade the king by our counsel, our well–loved leader, to shun assualt on the dreadful dragon guarding the gold; to let him lie where he long had lurked in his secret lair till the world shall end. But Beowulf, dauntless pressed to his doom." (1815–1820) Although both Hrothgar and Beowulf are men of their words, Beowulf can not resist ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 129. Beowulf And The Anglo Saxon Epic Poem, Beowulf In the Anglo–Saxon epic poem, Beowulf, a myriad of virtues define the warrior Beowulf. Beowulf follows this code rigorously and it is what allows him to carry himself with maturity and control when facing any obstacle. Although many aspire to tangible rewards, Beowulf is greatly concerned about the prestige a victory will do to his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

• 145. Gift Giving In Beowulf Seamus Heaney's Beowulf is a translated literary work from the Anglo–Saxon era which puts emphasis on countless themes, such as, being a warrior, religion and wealth. Over the course of the poem, the speaker puts emphasis on material possessions, which is shown through the act of gift giving. Some argue that the importance put gift giving and wealth in Beowulf, is to present a generous attitude however, it is evident that the purpose of this act is purely selfish. Parts of the poem like, Hrothgar giving Beowulf gold and treasures after his conquests, Grendel not wanting to pay a wergild, and Hrothgar paying money to the Wulfings for Beowulf's father are all examples of this. For insistence, the way in which Hrothgar gives Beowulf all those treasures appear to be out of respect and honor, however, this could be a manner to gain and retain his support. The King presents Beowulf with numerous treasures that vary between gold and horses, armor and swords, and he even presents a reward to the other men who fought with him. The following quotation explains Beowulf's thought on the matter. "So Beowulf drank his drink at ease; / it was hardly a shame to be showered with such gifts / in front of the hall–troops." (Heaney 1024–1026) Beowulf gladly accepts the gifts that are being thrust upon him, without putting much thought into it and thinking only about his reputation. However, many fail to notice that no one could own both the title king and the hero at the same time; they need to give up either one of the titles to become a truly successful hero or king. In the famous epic poem, Beowulf, despite Hrothgar rules Danes, another hero, Beowulf, shows up to solve Danes' problem while the true Danes king sits on his throne and simply gives all honor and credit to Beowulf. To become a truly successful leader, one must know to put down his honor and fame for his people's safety. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While Beowulf has not defeated Grendel yet, Hrothgar warmly welcomes Beowulf and makes him as comfortable as possible to prepare his fight with Grendel, because Hrothgar understands clearly that without Beowulf's help, he cannot protect his people. Continuing, even though he did not defeat Grendel by himself, Hrothgar demonstrates the wisdom a king needs to rule his kingdom. At the arrival of Beowulf's troops, Hrothgar knew distinctly that he needed to gain their loyalty in order to let Beowulf fight Grendel, so he generously gave plenty of drinks and he even brought out his own wife to please them, "...the Helming woman went on her rounds, / queenly and dignified, decked out in rings, / offering the goblet to all ranks," (620–622). Hrothgar utilizes his tactful mind to gain these warriors' trust, even though he could not fight anymore like Beowulf, the Danes' king's wisdom remains and makes him qualify as a king. Furthermore, Hrothgar gives advice to Beowulf, which reveals the insight Hrothgar has and the great worldview he yields. He says to Beowulf, "...beware of that trap. / Choose, dear Beowulf, the better part, / Eternal rewards. Do not give way to pride." (1758–1760). In these lines, Hrothgar warns Beowulf about the danger pride wields, which can infiltrate the strongest warrior; he pointed out the most dangerous trap, which people in that time period ignored easily when they become a leader. Compare And Contrast Hrothgar And Beowulf The epic poem Beowulf translated by Seamus Heaney, presents two heroic kings that have very clear differences on how they overcome challenges but they still keep their people in safe keepings. Hrothgar and Beowulf are admired by their people because they both show strong characteristics of what an Anglo–Saxon king should do or be. The king of Danes, Hrothgar, was first introduced as an accomplished and wise king. He comes to be well known as a young king when he protected Beowulf's now departed father, Ecgtheow. Hrothgar wergild peace with Ecgtheow's enemies so that the bloody feud would end. With Hrothgar doing this generous deed to help Ecgtheow and his kingdom out Beowulf devotes his assistance in the beginning of the poem. One thing that makes Hrothgar a good king is that he always seems to stay true to his word, as is told at the beginning, "the king kept well his pledge and promise to deal out gifts, rings at the banquet" (53–55). It was clear that Hrothgar was an exceptional military leader with his bravery and strength but he is aged now and cannot fight the same as he used to. The Danes are then faced with an evil and wicked monster, Grendel, who terrorizes his realm. Beowulf asks Hrothgar if he could fight this battle for him to pay back his family debt and Hrothgar agreed. Hrothgar makes a promise to reward Beowulf if he succeeds in killing the monster Grendel. Though the movie had been derived from the poem as most movies are there were many differences and similarities that stood out. In the movie when he was speaking with Hrothgar, Beowulf tells Hrothgar that he killed Grendel's mother. But in all reality it is not true in the movie but in the epic he truly does slay her in her "underwater cave". Instead of killing her he had a sexual relationship with her leading her to bear his child which in the end is found out to be the dragon which he kills but who also kills him. By this point we pick up that Grendel is really the son of Hrothgar, we see the relief in Hrothgar when Beowulf tell him that he has slain the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 197. How Does Grendel Cause Hrothgar's Downfall Character development is very important in character–driven literature, where stories focus not on events, but on individual personalities. Character development is a literary device that is used step by step in literature to highlight and explain the details about a character in a story. And the stories that move us most, the ones that stick inside years later, are those inhabited by characters we can connect with and admire. And no characters resonate more than those who in the course of a story learned how to either give in or overcome their own flaws and weaknesses to which they are remembered for. The rocky path of personal growth and development a character undergoes in a story, usually unwillingly, during which the character wrestles ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It's clear that Grendel is a major cause of Hrothgar's suffering–there are only so many times you can clean up the blood and rebuild your meadhall before you feel a little weak and broken. But the factors contributing to Hrothgar's downfall are more complex. Grendel's razor–sharp assessments hit the nail right on the head: "He had in his youth the strength of seven men. Not now. He has nothing left but the power of his mind–and no pleasure there: a case of knives. The civilization he meant to build has transmogrified to a forest thick with traps" (121). Not only has he lost his muscle, he's lost his peace of mind as well. The king has become trapped by everything he worked so hard to achieve. His bling, his solid rep, his fantastic crib, and even his methods of ruling become a target for younger, ambitious warlords. His beautiful wife, a peace offering from a young and resentful lesser king, might become a point of contention in the future. He also knows that his young sons will most likely become prey for their orphaned cousin Hrothulf, who has lost his natural chance at a throne through ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 201. Much of these people's respect comes in response to hrothgar's generosity to everyone. This generosity can be seen towards Beowulf, when the king gives his thanks for the heroic deeds of the warrior. Hrothgar rewards Beowulf with priceless ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He was known to be a great warrior and king, but he is still was unable to stop Grendel from killing his people. Although Hrothgar was a mighty warrior in his day, at the time when the epic story in Beowulf takes place he is an old king, no longer able to defend his people against the demon Grendel. King Hrothgar was not always a gentle lord. He mean seem like it because he does not fight the monster. Hrothgar first conquered in war, resulting in the acquirement of money and goods. Then as he aged he became braver and strong–minded. He also developed loyalty through friendships, especially felt at the teary goodbye when Beowulf left. Hrothgar follows the ideal set forth in King Sheafson in that he was successful at war and then gained loyalty through friendships and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 205. The Battle Between Grendel And The Scandinavian King Hrothgar "There is no limit to desire but desire's needs." (Grendel, Chapter 7) This is basically the main idea of the book; Grendel's desire to fit in with the humans. But before getting into that, here's some background on the book. "Grendel is the story of the Battle between the monster Grendel and the Scandinavian King Hrothgar, told through the eyes of the monster. The story highlights the various encounters between the monster and the men who hate and fear him but who are powerless to do anything to him, until a stranger from across the waters comes to end Grendel's life." (Enotes) The genre of this book is clearly tragedy for many characters pass away in this book. It's publisher is Gollancz and it was published 2015. Although based on a timeless well written novel. (Grendel, page 52) Grendel came to make peace with the humans and they attacked him and in his anger he taunted and killed many men. • 209. King Wuulf's Influence Of The Hero Of Beowulf In the beginning of the poem "Beowulf", one can recognize the excitement that the king expresses when Beowulf arrives to help defend the land of the Danes. The king of land, Hrothgar is grateful when Beowulf states that he is going to fight off Grendel, but the king warns Beowulf and urges him to not become a warrior and ruler that expresses too much pride in himself. Hrothgar continues on and insists that Beowulf remains peaceful, yet ready to battle, but not to become to driven by violence and too war–minded. Although at the time Beowulf expressed interest and seemed to agree with the advice that was being handed to him by King Hrothgar, he later goes on the ignore it and he will then find himself in some serious trouble down the line, due to these flaws that he possess as a warrior. Although Beowulf was a successful warrior, he diminished his legacy as a king and should have truly listened to the advice that was given to him by Hrothgar to help ensure his success and legacy as a future king. Hrothgar states to Beowulf "[c]hoose, dear Beowulf, the better part, eternal rewards. Do not give way to pride. For a brief while your strength is in bloom but it fades quickly; and soon there will follow illness or the sword you lay low..." (Beowulf, 1759–1768). This quotes demonstrates the tone that the king decided to use toward Beowulf to express the severity of the advice that he is giving to him and how he should take it serious as a warrior. This advice provides the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
