The Story Behind One Book and Its Two Covers
Creating the absolutely right design for a book cover is an art in itself. Note: All illustrations from Magical MousePainting TM – the Tool for Creativity
There are so many elements to consider, all of which are aimed at attracting potential buyers to pick up the book and leaf through its pages.
Think about it: What about its front cover motivates you to choose a book?
1) A controversial, witty or intriguing title help, of course.
2) Carefully considered are various elements of design - as well as choice of font and use (or not) of color and illustrations.
3) The overall look must be simple - yet eye-catching - and reflect the essence of what’s inside ...
4) Thought is even given to how front covers might look in black and white - if reviewed in the print media.
It’s a very tall order. Indeed!
So. The designer for my newest book created six (!!!) different covers. 6??? Yes, six. 1 2 3 4 5 6
I need help … You would think as a professional artist and published author, I could easily choose one. Uh, Uh .. Instead, for one reason or another, I liked them all.
I turned to friends and colleagues for help . “ Do you think it’s simple to make a decision?” I asked. Note: All illustrations this page from Magical MousePainting TM - A Tool for Computer Creativity
I challenged them. “ Vote for your favourite cover … Which design would entice you to pick out this book from the thousands offered in stores and online?”
“ If you have the inclination and time - tell me why: What’s your initial impression? What changes would you recommend?”
I also made two guarantees: (1) “I’ll seriously take your opinion into account,” and (2) “Many of you will end up as confused as I am.”
Guess what? They all looked at the six choices … 1 2 3 4 5 6 Scores of voters chose their favourite cover … and were passionate about telling why …
Which two? Find out on … www.ignitingimagination.com “ Arrival of the Queen of Sheba” Baroque music by G. F. Handel. Piano p layer, singer/songwriter Michele Mele: www.MicheleMele.com I promised I’d pay attention!!! There was an exact TIE vote for two winning designs!!
