Using cards games as learning objects to teach geneticsKatrin Becker
This presentation reports on the early results of a study of a novel card game used to teach concepts of Mendelian genetics and inheritance in a biology class. The card game being tested is currently in the prototype stage, and the current study seeks to determine if the design of the cards, game rules, and support material are appropriate to meet the intended objectives. The game, which uses domestic rabbit coat colours as the theme has both a novice and a standard variant, both of which will be described. Gameplay is patterned after the popular genre of rummy card games where players must match cards in sets according to specified criteria, in this case the genotypes of the rabbits featured on the cards. Through playing the game and matching phenotypes w/ genotypes as well as determining what can be produced given a specific phenotype and underlying genotype, players will learn basic principles of genetics, including familiarity with standard notation, terminology, and concepts such as genotype vs. phenotype. The game has been tested in several other venues and the results of those playtests will be summarized along with the early results from the current study which is the first test of the game in a biology class. Students were invited to play the game, and reflect on their experience through a survey that includes standard playtesting methodologies. Preliminary results will be presented along with a plan for the next steps.

Levels of Conceptual Understanding and Problem Solving Skills of Physics Teac...ijtsrd
The study aimed to determine the level of conceptual understanding and problem solving skills of Physics teachers in Kinematics. The study utilized a convergent parallel mixed method research design to collect quantitative and qualitative data. A validated researcher made tool was used in conducting the study. The study was administered to 44 public high school Science teachers in Toledo City, Cebu, Philippines, that are teaching Science at any grade level regardless of their field of specialization. Based on the findings of the study, most of the Physics teachers were female, General Science majors, and have 1 to 5 years of Science teaching experience. The overall level of conceptual understanding among Physics teachers was Developing, while their level of problem solving skills was Approaching Proficiency. The relationship between the level of conceptual understanding and the level of problem solving skills revealed a significant correlation. Moreover, teachers encountered difficulties in understanding and teaching Kinematics, applying mathematical skills, developing students’ interests in Physics, and time allotment. Physics content knowledge is crucial in understanding Kinematics while integrating concepts with problems. This supported Lee Shulman’s Content Knowledge theory and Jerome Bruner’s Constructivism theory which emphasized the teachers’ quality of teaching such as possessing a higher conceptual understanding and problem solving skills in Kinematics as it affects the teacher’s quality of instructions and students’ performances in Physics. The researcher recommended that curriculum specialists and school administrators shall provide training for teachers, especially non Physics majors, to enhance their conceptual and mathematical skills in Kinematics. Further studies may be conducted for out of field Physics teaching and students’ conceptual understanding and problem solving skills in Kinematics or other Science related concepts. Apple Kae R. Effects of Active Learning Strategies in Teaching Physicsijtsrd
The study utilized a quasi experimental method of the pretest posttest design with the pre selected groupings for the control and experimental groups. The study used validated researcher constructed pretest posttest questionnaires, online distance learning plans, attitude surveys, and focus group discussion questionnaires to determine the students performance. The study was conducted at a private high school in Cebu City. Both experimental and control groups underwent a pretest before implementing the proposed interventions. The studys findings showed the following results a both control and experimental groups manifested Above Average performance in the pretest and posttest b there was a significant mean improvement in the student’s performance in Physics in both experimental and control groups c there was no significant difference in the mean improvement in Physics between the experimental and control groups, and d the experimental group showed a very positive level of attitude towards the use of active learning strategies in teaching Physics. Based on the findings of the study, the integration of active learning strategies to the group with less teacher presence acts only as facilitator proved to be as effective as the group who received explicit teaching from the teacher in teaching Physics. In addition, it did not only enhance the students’ performance as manifested by their comparable performance with the other group but was also influential in developing a positive attitude that affected their performance. The theories of Direct Instruction by Siegfried Engelmann and Douglas Carnine believe that teacher centered teaching strategies are effective in teaching Physics since the teacher explicitly teaches and helps the students understand the lessons. Constructivism Learning by Jean Piaget states that involving the students actively and exposing them to activities that will engage them in the teaching and learning process by interacting with their actual experiences were confirmed by this studys findings. The study advises curriculum designers to provide several active learning activities that encourage student engagement and participation and apply dynamic teaching techniques in Physics instruction. Additionally, to help them overcome the challenge, students should be offered various learning methodologies, and future researchers should conduct a comparative study on face to face training. 2. Chapter I
Introduction
A. Background of the Study
Education is the multidisciplinary sector of the community. It serves as the
foundation of a better life as others said: “Education is the key to success”. Thus,
much priority must be placed into education. As stated in the 1987 Philippine
Constitution Article II Section 17 that the State shall give priority to education,
science and technology, arts, culture, and sports to foster patriotism and
nationalism, accelerate social progress, and promote total human liberation and
development.
In response to giving priority in education, different strategies have been
tried to cope with this deficiency. But students are still incapable of
understanding the new learning their teachers are trying to convey. According to
a study, it showed that individual differences are the major problems in
education due to different intelligence, abilities, interests and rate of learning
(Vaishnav, 2005). With regards to individual differences, different methodologies
were used to address educational needs, until such time technologies were found
to help resolve the issue.
In the advent of these modern technologies, different courses and programs
were offered in colleges and universities in line with the utilization of these
technologies, one of which is the BSIT Program which is centered on the
evolution and continuous change of technology. The program includes science-
related subjects namely Physics, which is focused on the mechanics, heat,
electricity and magnetism; and Discrete Mathematics, which is focused on
binaries and logic circuit. These two subjects are often the most difficult subjects
for the students since these involve computations and knowledge on analysis.
3. This research wants to determine that if someone finds Physics difficult, he
may also find Discrete Mathematics difficult or vice versa. In short, it seeks to
find out if there is a significant relation between the aforementioned subjects
using the students’ academic performance or grades.
B. Objectives
General Objective
To determine if there is a significant relation between Physics 2 and IT6
based on academic performance of BSIT II Students A.Y. 2012-2013.
Specific Objectives:
1. To get the students grades in both Physics 2 and IT6 subjects
2. To get the mean grades in both Physics 2 and IT6 subjects per set
3. To calculate the Pearson r Correlation Coefficient.
C. Hypothesis
Ho = There is no significant relation between Physics 2 and IT6
Ha = There is a significant relation between Physics 2 and IT6
D. Significance of the Study
The research is significant to the researchers since it serves as their
passage towards passing the subject. This will also help the students and
faculty of this institution to evaluate which part of student-teacher relation
towards the subject needs enhancement. The institution will also benefit from
this research; it will show how effective the teaching strategies of the faculty
are.
4. E. Operational Definition of Terms
IT6 – the subject code for Discrete Mathematics offered in the BSIT Program
Mean Grade – the total average in the subject
Physics 2 – the subject code for Physics: Mechanics and Heat
Set – a group or cluster of BSIT II students
5. Chapter II
Methodology
A. Research Description
The research is descriptive evaluative since student’s academic performance
were used as the main data in the determination of the relation between the
subjects Physics 2 and IT6.
B. Data Gathering
The researchers gathered a copy of record containing all students’ academic
performance or grades from the Program Chairperson of the Institute of
Information Technology. This was done with an approval letter attached at the
end of this research paper.
C. Sampling Method
Since the population of the research subject is more than a hundred (163),
the researchers used the Stratified Sampling Method because the gathered
grades were grouped by sets.
D. Data Instrument
The researchers gathered a record of student’s grades in both Physics 2 and
IT6 from the Program Chairperson of the Institute of Information Technology.
The gathered data are then used to get the mean grades of the students per set
in both Physics2 and IT6.
E. Research Subject
The research subjects are the BSIT-II students of Davao del Norte State
College A.Y. 2012-2013.
6. F. Statistical Test
Pearson r Correlation Coefficient was used by the researchers to interpret the
data since the study aims to determine the linear relationship between the two
variables, Physics 2 and IT6.

12. Chapter IV
Summary, Conclusion, Recommendations
Summary
Physics 2 and IT6 are interrelated with each other, take for example in the
creation of a logic circuit board which is part of the Discrete Mathematics; you must at
least understand some basics of Electricity which is also a big part of Physics, for you to
create a functional one. Since these two subjects are correlated then if one finds
Physics easy, he may also find Discrete Mathematics easy or vice-versa. In a real
scenario, it’s not about passing both subjects but it’s about taking them individually and
differently but seriously because at the end of the day, it matters on how you do things
correctly and wisely.
Conclusion
Based on the results, the researchers conclude that there is a significant relation
between IT6 and Physics 2. It was also found that IT6 can somehow affect Physics or
vice-versa in terms of the academic performances or grades.
Recommendations
The researchers recommend to the future researchers of the same to use other
methodologies and tests to further prove the study. It is also recommended to make
the scope bigger, not just Physics 2 and IT6, but other subjects as applicable as it is.
