Adolescence is a time of physical and emotional changes as well as identity formation. Forming an identity is one of the most important tasks of adolescence. The process often involves experiencing relationships, successes, failures, emotions and evaluating one's reactions. Allowing teenagers to go through these experiences in a natural way, while providing support, helps them understand their strengths and weaknesses to form a sense of self that guides them into adulthood. Memories from the teenage years can later help people assess what they can handle based on understanding their identity.
