“Bullying is simply a repeated oppression,
psychological or physical, of a less powerful person by
a more powerful person or group of
persons”(Thompson 2013 p.2). Bullying is very
different from aggression that is between individuals
that has equal power. The reasons why an individual
can have less power than other individuals is simply
because shyness, lack of confidence, and lack of
physical strength. Bullying also takes on a wide variety
of different forms such as physical threats, violence,
name-calling, and teasing, both ostracism as well as
social attacks on an individuals reputation.
Conflict has always been a normal aspect of the majority
of relationships simply because individuals have both
perspectives as well as priorities that are different. Although the
majority of children truly do need adult supervision, it is
because they will be able to learn how to constructively deal
with conflict. Most upsetting conflicts is not considered to be
bullying. Individuals can be hurtful also by experiencing with
the negative uses of the power that they have without even
realizing how it will impact. “The good news is that the social-
emotional skills that can prevent and stop most bullying and
harassment are also important in building healthy
relationships”(Thompson 2013 p.3).
Children along with teens truly do need repeated,
consistent messages from their parents, all of their teachers, all
of their faculty members, and every adult reminding them to
always be safe. This simply means that children and teens
should not be scared of another individual that is attempting to
harm them. “Your job is to speak up if someone is saying or
doing something that is harmful to you, and get help from
”(Thompson 2013 p.4).
Always make sure to give individuals the opportunities to
practice being powerful, respectful, and persistent whenever utilizing
these skills:
• Utilize awareness to notice situations that are problems.
• Tell someone to stop.
• Ask to join in the conversations in a friendly and confident way.
• Leave and find someone different to play with.
• Interrupt adults that are busy and be persistent in regards to asking
for help with a safety problem.
A student who is being bullied usually displays loneliness,
misery, and despair. It is very important to pay careful attention
o the warning signals such as your child suddenly not wanting to
go to school, showing depression, and acting upset about
elationships with peers(Thompson 2013). Make sure that your
child truly knows that you will definitely help no matter how
busy you are.
Make sure to always stay very calm, no matter how upset
you feel. The is a strong possibility that there will be more
success in regards to dealing with both they problem as well as
your child.
The way that you respond can truly make a huge
impact on bullying over time. In regards to stopping
bullying on the spot, whenever adults react both quickly as
well as consistently to bullying behavior, it definitely sends a
message that it truly is not acceptable. “Research has shown
that this can stop bullying over time”(Thompson 2013 p.5).
Cyberbullying occurs when the kids bully other kids
through utilizing electronic technology. “There are several
different types of Cyberbullying such as mean texts, or emails,
rumors that were sent via email or posted on social networking
sites and embarrassing pictures, videos, and fake
profiles”(Thompson 2013 p.5).
Whenever there is a child, or either a individual that is
close to you getting bullied ,it is important to always make sure
that bullying is truly understood “The warning sign of bullying,
and the steps to take for preventing and responding to bullying,
include how to talk to the children, about bullying, and
prevention in schools and communities(Thompson 2013 p.5).
