The Rosetta Stone is a black slab of rock weighing 760kg discovered in 1799 in Egypt near Rosetta that has carvings in different languages including Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs and Demotic, which helped scholars decipher Egyptian hieroglyphs. It is currently housed at the British Museum in London and was originally commissioned in the 2nd century BC by the Ptolemaic rulers of Egypt.
