The Reflective Cycle.
CONCRETE EXPERIENCE – What did I do?
To begin with, the main aim of this experience was to teach English as a foreign
language in Primary level. To do this, I made observations, provided
assistantships and finally gave seven classes so as to complete my practicum.
Throughout my practicum, I learnt that lessons take a long time to plan. There
are many aspects that I have to consider before planning my lessons. For
example, I learnt that I have to bear in mind essential aspects such as students´
interests and appropriate contexts and contents.
REFLECTIVE OBSERVATION – How did I do it?
While doing my practicum, I found out that students loved doing activities
related to famous people. Consequently, I became aware that planning
meaningful and enjoyable activities are vital to help students learn English in a
better way. For this reason, I decided to plan activities based on what students
liked in all the lessons.
During my practicums, I often had to resort to L1 to explain the activities
because I felt that often, students were not able to understand me. However, I
became aware of my mistake when I considered the teacher´s feedback in which
she told me that I had to avoid using Spanish. For this reason, I strongly believe
that it is one of the weaknesses I have to overcome in my teaching practice.
ABSTRACT CONCEPTUALIZATION – What can I do differently? and ACTIVE
EXPERIMENTATION – What plan should I implement?
Taking account what I have mentioned before, I know that I have to make
changes to improve my teaching in the future. For instance, I should expose
students to as much English as possible. Firstly, I should speak English from the
start to help students become familiar with the foreign language. Secondly, I
should provide students with the necessary support, such as visual aids,
gestures, facial signs and sounds to help them understand English in a better
way. Thirdly, I should encourage them to use the target language in every
lesson. Since students always experience anxiety, fear or shame when speaking

English, I should use more fun activities and games to help them increase their
confidence in the use of the target language.
To conclude, I feel certain that my practicum experience has enriched my
teaching practice greatly. I know that I had some drawbacks during my teaching
experience, but I believe that mistakes are part of my process to become the
outstanding English teacher I want to be. I will always try to overcome my
mistakes and avoid repeating them in the future. In my opinion, it was an
amazing experience which has taught me a lot. Not only did students learn
English from my teaching, but I also learnt to teach them in a meaningful and
enjoyable way.
