This document outlines the author's teaching philosophy. Some key points:
- The author was inspired to become a teacher by their high school English teacher who motivated students to learn vocabulary and write essays in just 10 minutes.
- They have 8 years of experience teaching English from grades 5 to 11 using different approaches like comparing languages and relating lessons to students' experiences.
- As an educator, teaching English presents challenges like its flexible nature and vast borrowed words, but the author simplifies objectives and progresses lessons from easiest to most complex.
- Formative feedback from students has helped the author adapt their teaching style while the class is ongoing to address issues like talking too fast or not allowing enough note-taking time
1. Statement of Teaching Philosophy
“Good Teachers teach great teachers inspire”
My philosophy and approach to teaching and learning is the resultof my
experience and my updated studies in Education. As a high schoolstudent I was
inspired for three years by my English teacher, the way he motivates us to learn
vocabulary and challenges us in writing essays and literature responses in 10
minutes. Since that time I have decided to be a teacher. During my third year at
the Lebaneseuniversity I started my firstteaching experience working for an Ngo
(world vision) and trying to teach adults (of different ages and genders) the
language of the world. Itwas a great experience I was passionateto give them all
the information I have and hence they wereeager to grasp everything froma 21
year old kid. Then I moved to classes but this time it was more challenging
because students weretaking English as a third Language (Arabic- French and
English) and this was a challenge for me for havecompared the three languages
Arabic, French and English and taught them in comparative way showing my
students that I am benefitting from their French Language and simultaneously
they achieve targets fromme. The bottom line it is easy to comparelanguages to
achieve targets.
AS an educator, teaching English seems an easy task to all, but this language is
difficult to teach for many reasons. Firstof all this Language is the most flexible
language you can insert a prefix or a suffixand derive a new word, second it has a
vastnumber of borrowed words and finally this languages has grown through
decades, changed and established growth. And here comes the challenge any
objective explained was simplified to the minimum and the flow of the lesson
starts fromthe easiestto the most complicated. Many time wefind students
striving to learn speaking only and they ask why should I learn (reading-or
grammar), to me my inspiration continues to teach Language skills all integrated
fromvocab , to reading, listening, speaking and writing because these are the
elements of Language ,you cannot ignoreany of them. Then my students were
awarethat English Language surrounds themeverywherestarting frombulletin
2. boards, TV and radio commercials, news, music, movies and cartoons so at least
through repetition they can understand situation and what is delivered without
mastering Language this makes learners comfortable in the process of teaching
and learning.
On the other hand my eight year experience made me a huge and well versed
packageto teach English. I have taught fromgrade 5 to grade 11 all (American-
British- LebaneseNational+ Second language) and lectured at Byblos Institution
for vocational teaching. I am an up to date teacher who is able to use Technology,
resourceful, and use my talents in teaching. I am quite awareof many aspects in
the process of teaching and learning (competence/ performance- Bottom up/top
down- differentiation- and learning by application and personalizing the targets
which means relating it to their own experience).
Becoming an effective teacher is a lifelong process and I am always striving to find
ways to stimulate learning and intellectual growth in my students. I havefound
that students can provide timely and critical feedback. In addition to reflecting on
the end of the semester feedback, I haveused anonymous feedback during the
semester to help me adapt to the class. This formativeassessmentwas critical
when I first started teaching and allowed me to address comments such as
“talking too fast” or “not allowing enough time to take notes” while I was still
teaching the class. I also believe that, as educators, wecan learn a lot fromone
another and actively seek out interactions (both formaland informal) about
teaching techniques and how to most effectively present material.
Finally this whatis teaching the profession thatteaches all professions , to me a
teacher is the mostinfluential person in this world but unfortunately not all
societies appreciate him and this is my battle.
