THE REVIEW OF
RELATED
LITERATURE
How to Search for
Related Literature
1. It is about the same
research problem.
2.It involves the same
population.
3.It has at least one
common variable with
ones study.
The review of related literature
performs the following functions:
1. It provides conceptual or
theoretical framework of the
planned research.
2. It provides information about past
researches related to the intended
study.
3. It gives the researcher a
feeling of confidence since
by means of the review of
related literature he will
have on hand all constructs
related to the study.
4. It gives information about the
research methods used, the
population and sampling
considered, the instruments used
in gathering the data and the
statistical tools used to analyze
the data.
5. It provides findings
and conclusions of past
investigations which the
researcher may relate
to his findings and
conclusions
To review related literature, the
researcher must:
1. Summarize the
problem, the method
used, the findings and
conclusions
2. Distinguish
the present
study from the
one reviewed.
3. State how
the present
study differs
from the
reviewed one.
Three contribution to problem solving
that review of related lit. can give
1. A carefully planned
program of reading is
frequently the source
of significant
problems.
2. A systematic survey
of related literature is
the means of
determining whether the
proposed study
unnecessarily duplicates
some earlier
investigation.
3. The knowledge obtained
from such reading, in terms
of sources, procedures and
results, represents
essential orientation for
definition of the problem,
selection of method and
interpretation of findings.
Two kinds of
related
literature
1. Research
literature
2. Conceptual
literature
Guides to use
in the review
of related
literature
1.Comprehensive or
general guides
2.Guides to periodicals
and serials
3.Guides to books and
monographs
4.Guides to graduate theses
5.Guides to special
educational areas and
problems
6.Continuing or serial
bibliographies and
summaries in limited areas
of education.
7. Extensive individual
bibliographies and
summaries in limited areas
of education.
8. Biographical, institutional
and statistical directories
and handbook in education.
RESEARCH
METHODOLOGY
Bailey (1987) has made a
distinction between method and
methodology. “Method” simply
refers to the research
technique or tool used to gather
data while “methodology” refers
to the philosophy of the
research process.
The
Importance of
Methodology
1. Methodology as Rules for Communication
2. Methodology as Rules for Reasoning
3. Methodology as Rules for intersubjectivity
