Reading and tackling the role of responses: More than comprehension questions
Classroom learning is often driven by questions or tasks given and the answer or product required. This is especially noticeable in learning cultures in which the teacher defines the ‘how’ of learning by the one correct answer sought or a closely defined outcome. With an examination dominant system driven by competitive school league tables, correctness may begin to dominate creativity and critical thinking. Yet this can be contested if facilitators of learning use varied responses to reading rather than rely on the one and only correct task type or response.
This workshop will provide experience in varied task types which are responses to written text. Just two reading texts will be used to suggest a range of responses which could stimulate vocabulary understanding and use, while developing creativity in teaching and learning
Making inferences ppt

The quotation question classslides

- 2. What do I have to do? You MUST use quotation marks -> when question ask you to quote from passage. You can leave out the quotation mark -> if question asks you for a word/ phrase/ sentence/ expression.
- 3. What do I have to do? Exam tips! Answer must be accurate every word must be necessary and relevant Does questions ask for consecutive words? (successive words, or word written one after another) Note exact number of words in your answer if question ask to quote/write down a specific number of words.
- 4. What do I have to do? Exam tips! if question ask for a phrase Do not give a sentence because a phrase is a short group of words whereas a sentence begin with a capital letter and ends with a full stop. If question asks you to quote an ‘expression’ A single word can be the shortest answer The longest answer is a sentence.
- 5. Examples of past year papers 1. Later on in the passage, the author refers to the volcano’s ‘long respose’ (line 23). Write down three consecutive words used in paragraph 2 which carry the same idea. 2. The author believes that these countries now cannot free themselves from the effects of tourism. Write down one word he uses in the paragraph to convey this idea.
