The Pursuit of Happiness is a movie about a single African American father named Chris Gardner,
who was evicted from his apartment in San Francisco, and him and his son have nowhere to go.
Chris is an intern as a stockbroker unfortunately this position pays no money. These two face many
challenges together as they live in shelters and face the hardships of life as anything and everything
gets thrown their way. However, Chris refuses to give up as he struggles to make a better life for
him and his son. According to Macinois (Macionis, 2017), family violence involves "emotional,
physical, or sexual abuse of one family member by another" (p. 642). Chris's wife is being in lack of
terms a bitch towards him because he hasn't sold any of his bone density machines. Once he
explained what happened throughout his day she didn't want to hear what he had to say. She's been
bringing him down ever since he signed himself into the company that doesn't result in a good

Happiness is a feeling that many people enjoy having, yet, it may not be easily obtainable. The
Pursuit of Happyness, a movie directed by Gabriele Muccino, captures the struggles of someone
trying to obtain happiness. Chris Gardner, the main character, stated, "...Thomas Jefferson on the
Declaration of Independence and the part about our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of
happiness. And I remember thinking how did he know to put the pursuit part in there? That maybe
happiness is something that we can only pursue and maybe we can never have it. No matter what."

Throughout the movie, people are seen at either extremely depressed moments or extremely happy
moments. People in the world are struggling, but, there should be no limit to happiness; if it is

Chris's family, in the beginning, is Linda, his wife, and their son, Christopher. Linda, to escape the
financial issues Chris has caused, leaves their home with Christopher, angering Chris. The angered
father explains, "[Chris] met [his] father for the first time when [he] was 28 years old. [He] made up
[his] mind that when [he] had children, [his] children were going to know who their father was."
(Muccino). This explains why Chris feels an extreme anger towards Linda when she removes him
from his life. Chris threatens Linda to give Christopher back, not considering anyone else's feelings
in the situation, but she does give Christopher to Chris. These events describe the struggle between
Chris and Linda and their inability to find happiness with each other, but, their separation relives
some struggles and tension. Although, the happiness does not stay with Chris forever; he endures
more than just family struggles.
At the moment the audience meets Chris his main source of income is selling Bone Density
Scanners. The main problem that Chris has with selling the scanners is that, "It gave a slightly
denser picture than an x–ray for twice the money... doctors and hospitals...would consider them

generally the one who brings in the most money for the company gets hired. He starts off as very
unappreciated as he was the one who was always asked to buy coffee and donuts for his bosses. He
is also disadvantaged, as he has to leave the office at 4pm to pick up Christopher when everyone
else stays back till 7pm. Later on he manages to get a meeting with Walter Ribbon that if it goes
well he could get the company lots of money but he is forced to run an errand for his boss, which

who struggles with finding enough money to pay taxes and afford living expenses. The movie takes

In another perspective, fatherhood for Gardner is like a job for him. Because he loses his wife, he

The American Dream is the dream that regardless of where you are born or what social class you are
born into, anyone can attain their own version of success. In The Great Gatsby and The Pursuit of
Happyness , both protagonists pursue the path to achieving their American Dream. For both Jay
Gatsby and Christopher Gardner they are both given unfortunate privileges to where they start their
journey. Both men are lower class citizens who make less than minimum wage salaries but that do
not stop them from wanting to succeed. Chris' story begins in a small apartment in San Francisco.
Chris Gardner is a black man with a minimum wage job, who lives with his wife Linda and his 5
year–old son Christopher. One day, his wife leaves him because of his lack of income and
motivation to provide for the family. That day, Chris devotes his life and his son's life to a successful
future. Chris and his son are pushed to their limits in the hope that Chris will achieve his American

The Pursuit of Happiness Not getting what you want all the time is no big deal, a sixteen year old
might want a new car but their parents won't buy them one because working for it is more important.
The only time not getting what you want is a major issue when it affects your pursuit of happiness.
For example, The opportunity for everyone to be treated equal and not judged based on the color of

feeling safe at school. But what happens when the government tries to deny us that right. The a

making their best efforts to obtain that which we all want the most, happiness. Many individuals will

five–year old son. He faces problems when his wife is unwilling to accept his goal to become a
stockbroker and leaves him. However, he perseveres even under all this stress.
Chris Gardner excels at his stockbroker internship in Dean–Witter, earning the attention and respect
from his superiors. However, his personal life plunges exponentially. He loses his money and has to
resort to sleeping in homeless shelters and subway station bathrooms. He begins to think that
