The document outlines 6 documentary styles described by Bill Nichols: poetic, expository, observational, participatory, reflexive, and performative. It provides examples and brief descriptions of each style. The poetic style uses subjective interpretations and creative editing. The expository style aims to inform by presenting facts, interviews, and narration. The observational style allows viewers to form their own conclusions through fly-on-the-wall footage without interference. The participatory style emphasizes interaction between filmmaker and subjects. The reflexive style exposes the documentary's construction. And the performative style addresses the audience emotionally through a narrative.
The document discusses how media has become more democratic now than in the past. It provides two case studies as evidence: Burma VJ, which showed how citizen video journalism helped bring democracy to Burma by exposing government issues; and Wikileaks, which provided secret information and whistleblowing opportunities that increased transparency. While media technologies now allow more individual participation and sharing of information, the document notes it is still a developing topic and democracy remains difficult to fully achieve when accounting for all voices.

This document discusses using short films to enhance literacy education. It argues that short films can make learning more active, connect classroom learning to students' lives outside of school, and deepen understanding of texts. Short films allow students to analyze elements like character, setting, story, symbolism, and film techniques. The document provides examples of activities like using "Tell Me" grids to discuss films, stopping and starting films to pick out details, and predicting what will happen next. It aims to show how analyzing short films can improve students' creative, critical and cultural understanding, and help develop literacy in the 21st century.
Expanding Our Definition of Literacy: Using Images and Film as Mentor Textsalizawerner
Images and film have the power to engage audiences, inform opinions, and shift perspectives. Using images and films as mentor texts invites every child to make meaning, develop empathy, and think deeply about cultural, social, and personal experiences. Learn about resources that ignite conversation and connected learning in your classroom. (This is my presentation from nErDcampMI 2017.)
David Morley conducted a study in 1980 where he had different socioeconomic groups watch an episode of the BBC program Nationwide. He argued that individuals from different social positions would have different interpretations of the program based on their shared cultural experiences and discourses. Specifically, he outlined three potential readings: dominant, negotiated, and oppositional. Christian Metz also analyzed audiences and argued that film satisfies three Freudian desires - the desire for the ego, the desire to desire, and the desire for an object or fetishism. Understanding how social position influences interpretation is important for properly constructing and targeting audiences for films.
Research on Documentary Modes - Bill NicholsLois Hunt
This document discusses Bill Nichols' six documentary modes: poetic, expository, observational, participatory, reflexive, and performative. It provides examples for each mode and analyzes how elements of different documentaries could inspire the filmmaker's own documentary on social networks. While the filmmaker's style relates most to the expository mode using voiceover, they aim to present both positive and negative aspects of the topic to avoid being too authoritative. In conclusion, the filmmaker determines that reflexive mode is not the best fit but that interview-based elements could still influence their own documentary.
This document discusses research and planning stages needed to make a horror film. It recommends getting a scary idea and plot, finding a filming location with permission, casting actors, adding atmospheric music and scary monsters/killers, using ordinary objects to increase drama, including plot twists, using good special effects like blood substitutes, and editing the completed film with a release date in mind. Digital technologies needed include CGI for visual effects, sound effects to set tense atmospheres, and film editing software to assemble scenes from multiple shots.
This document provides an overview of a course on holographic cinema at Università dell’ Immagine in 2004. The course aims to teach students how to control the behavior of images once they enter the human body, similar to how a doctor monitors medical treatments. Each student will create a multimedia installation to fundamentally change the behavior of a randomly selected spectator from a phone book, requiring them to develop a relationship and method to measure the spectator's emotional response. The class involves tests, lectures, projects and strict rules around decorum and deadlines.
This document discusses using film to enhance literacy education. It provides examples of how short films can be used in the classroom with techniques like "Tell Me" grids to get students to analyze elements of films like characters, settings and stories. Research shows benefits like improved motivation, engagement and literacy attainment. The BFI distributed short film compilations and trained teachers, reaching over 2000 educators. Exercises are described where students create their own short scenes and films using techniques like long takes. Overall, the document advocates integrating film literacy into education to help students fully participate in 21st century culture.
Audience theory examines how audiences are constructed and how they interpret films. An audience's interpretation is influenced by factors like their social class, education, and cultural background. David Morley studied how different socioeconomic groups interpreted the BBC program "Nationwide" and found they had dominant, negotiated, or oppositional readings based on their social positions. Christian Metz argued that film satisfies three Freudian desires - for the ego, to desire, and for an object - which distinguishes it from other art forms. Understanding audience composition and interpretation is important for targeting a film to the appropriate demographic.
This document provides an overview of a film analysis session on Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange. It discusses various micro-elements of film construction that can be used to elicit emotional responses from audiences, such as camerawork, character alignment, narrative, sound, mise-en-scene, and editing. Students are tasked with watching clips to analyze how these elements are used and link it to film theories. Several relevant film theories are then outlined, such as the hypodermic needle model, uses and gratifications, and the impression of reality. Students are divided into groups to discuss how A Clockwork Orange manipulates audience emotion based on these theories.
This document discusses audience theory and research on audience composition and interpretation of media. It summarizes David Morley's study which found that social position influences how audiences make sense of TV programs, through dominant, negotiated, or oppositional readings. The document also outlines Christian Metz's work on how cinema satisfies desires for the ego, desire itself, and fetishism. It proposes that the target audience for a short film would be social groups A and B due to their appreciation for film festival styles.
The document discusses research the author plans to do for their short film project. They will analyze existing short films with similar themes to understand what works and doesn't work. They will also research film theory, including how cinematography, color, camerawork and editing can influence the film and engage audiences. The author wants to ensure every aspect of the film has meaning and has been thought through. They will research how colors link to emotions and how camerawork conveys emotions. They will also research their target audience and why they are targeting that demographic.

Pajka, Sharon, and Jane Nickerson. "Engaging Students with Videos in Integrated Learning Classes." The HUIC Arts and Humanities Conference. January 8, 2012. Ed. Derek Leong. Honolulu Hawaii: Hawaii University International Conferences, 2012. Print.
The document summarizes the history of film from its origins with the Lumiere brothers' short films in 1895 to the development of narrative films by George Melies. It then discusses the functions, benefits and drawbacks of cinema, noting how films can educate and influence viewers both positively and negatively. In particular, it examines the effects of movies on teens, pointing out that while movies can inspire imagination and open eyes to new worlds, they can also promote unhealthy behaviors if viewers emulate negative content. Ultimately, the conclusion states that other factors like family and environment weigh more heavily on a teen's decisions, but films still have potential for positive influence.
The document discusses various technical aspects of TV dramas, including definitions, conventions, and analysis. It begins by asking the reader to define a TV drama with a partner and then discusses textual analysis and representation through techniques like camera shots, camera angles, editing, sound, and mise-en-scene. It also covers exam structure, key representation areas, genres of TV drama, and macro and micro elements of film language.
Blanche Calloway revisited after discovery of her childhood home at 2216 Druid Hill Avenue.
I learned so much about my aunt just by visiting this home. It made her history come alive for me. It was such an incredible experience. I felt I had to share it with others.
Unfortunately the city of Baltimore is going to demolish the home in just a few days.
I wanted to get this history out before it was too late!
Why druid hill avenue is important in american music history [autosaved]Peter Brooks
This document discusses the historical significance of 2216 Druid Hill Avenue in Baltimore, Maryland. It was the childhood home of Cab Calloway and Blanche Calloway, two pioneering African American musicians. Cab Calloway lived there from ages 11-15, a formative time when he began developing his musical talents. The house represents an important place where early styles of African American music like swing and bebop took shape, eventually influencing genres such as rock and roll and hip hop. Saving the house could turn it into an educational cultural center honoring the musical legacy that began there.
How can Baltimore best profit from its role in music history?Peter Brooks
This is a draft of the public presentation I want to give to the Baltimore community on the significance of 2216 Druid Hill Avenue. I would like to develop this into something for Maryland Colleges and Universities.
The document discusses principles of harmony, clarity, and balance for website design. Harmony is achieved through elements like proximity, repetition, and consistent use of color and fonts. Clarity solves problems by being clear, coherent, and reducing distractions. Balance occupies negative space to create a sense of order and momentum. The key is giving all elements space, focusing on the main message, and following principles like KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid) to build trust and guide users effortlessly.
Website best practices for business from a UIUX PerspecitvePeter Brooks
This document discusses best practices for designing business websites. It emphasizes that the fundamental question to ask is how people will access the website and what their experience will be once there. Research is key to understanding audiences - their demographics, buying habits, and desires. Businesses should view themselves as learning organizations that gather customer data to maximize engagement and performance. Trends come and go, so designers should focus on timeless principles like alignment, balance, and usefulness. Above all, research should inform how a website solves users' needs and provides the best possible experience.

How to Make a Field Mandatory in Odoo 17Celine George
In Odoo, making a field required can be done through both Python code and XML views. When you set the required attribute to True in Python code, it makes the field required across all views where it's used. Conversely, when you set the required attribute in XML views, it makes the field required only in the context of that particular view.

LAND USE LAND COVER AND NDVI OF MIRZAPUR DISTRICT, UPRAHUL
This Dissertation explores the particular circumstances of Mirzapur, a region located in the
core of India. Mirzapur, with its varied terrains and abundant biodiversity, offers an optimal
environment for investigating the changes in vegetation cover dynamics. Our study utilizes
advanced technologies such as GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and Remote sensing to
analyze the transformations that have taken place over the course of a decade.
The complex relationship between human activities and the environment has been the focus
of extensive research and worry. As the global community grapples with swift urbanization,
population expansion, and economic progress, the effects on natural ecosystems are becoming
more evident. A crucial element of this impact is the alteration of vegetation cover, which plays a
significant role in maintaining the ecological equilibrium of our planet.Land serves as the foundation for all human activities and provides the necessary materials for
these activities. As the most crucial natural resource, its utilization by humans results in different
'Land uses,' which are determined by both human activities and the physical characteristics of the
land.
The utilization of land is impacted by human needs and environmental factors. In countries
like India, rapid population growth and the emphasis on extensive resource exploitation can lead
to significant land degradation, adversely affecting the region's land cover.
Therefore, human intervention has significantly influenced land use patterns over many
centuries, evolving its structure over time and space. In the present era, these changes have
accelerated due to factors such as agriculture and urbanization. Information regarding land use and
cover is essential for various planning and management tasks related to the Earth's surface,
providing crucial environmental data for scientific, resource management, policy purposes, and
diverse human activities.
Accurate understanding of land use and cover is imperative for the development planning
of any area. Consequently, a wide range of professionals, including earth system scientists, land
and water managers, and urban planners, are interested in obtaining data on land use and cover
changes, conversion trends, and other related patterns. The spatial dimensions of land use and
cover support policymakers and scientists in making well-informed decisions, as alterations in
these patterns indicate shifts in economic and social conditions. Monitoring such changes with the
help of Advanced technologies like Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems is
crucial for coordinated efforts across different administrative levels. Advanced technologies like

Changes in vegetation cover refer to variations in the distribution, composition, and overall
structure of plant communities across different temporal and spatial scales. These changes can
occur natural.

3. Power of Animation
• When talking about illustration, photography, publication and even
sculpting as art forms – 2D or 3D.
• Animation and film add a fourth dimension – motion and a 5th
dimension sound.
• Throughout the lecture I am going to be talking about the ontology
of things going from origin to future making that link.
• Art is emotion – 2009 article “Brain and Cognition” proved that viewing art
stimulates emotional centers of the brain, same could be said for music, etc
4. What is Animation?
• Illusion of motion – key frame animation
• Illusion of change
• Created by a rapid display of a series of images
When most
people think of
animation, they
think of
children.
5. Why is Animation
associated with
children?
• Suspension of belief
• Excitement of possibilities
• Helps blunt reality
• Dreamy like quality
• Exaggeration
6. Animation starts with illustration
• illustration in motion
Cinema starts with photography
• photography in motion
Is animation to illustration what cinema is to
photography?
7. Which is more powerful?
• Animation vs. Cinema
Cheaper
More flexibility in length

13.
14. Animation is more powerful than film
• But is less mature
• Less nuance, authenticity, emotional complexity
• Has a larger engine to emotion/psychology
• Trigger to subconscious suspend belief and “fill in the
gaps”
• Animation can go to cinema easier than cinema to
animation
• Less expensive, more imaginative, less bandwidth
15. What the heck is UI/UX?
• Future of animation
• User Interface, User Design
