Paul as a
type of Christ
1
. . . .and whosoever
will lose his life for
my sake shall find it
 Matt 16:24 Then said Jesus unto
his disciples, If any man will
come after me, let him deny
himself, and take up his cross,
and follow me. 25 For
whosoever will save his life shall
lose it: and whosoever will lose
his life for my sake shall find it.
 Acts 20:24 But none of these
things move me, neither count I
my life dear unto myself, so that
I might finish my course with
joy, and the ministry, which I
have received of the Lord Jesus,
to testify the gospel of the grace
of God.
2
Like Jesus, Paul
was unmarried
 1Cor 7:8 I say therefore to
the unmarried and widows,
It is good for them if they
abide even as I.
 1Cor 9:5 Have we not
power to lead about a
sister, a wife, as well as
other apostles, and as the
brethren of the Lord, and
Cephas?
3
Jesus was in the
darkness of the
tomb for three
days.
Saul was without
sight and neither
ate nor drank
three days
 1 Corinthians 15:4 And
that he was buried, and
that he rose again the
third day according to the
scriptures:
 Acts 9:9 And he was three
days without sight, and
neither did eat nor drink.
4
Jesus is the light
of the world . . .
Paul was to be a
light to the
gentiles
 John 9:5 As long as I am in the
world, I am the light of the
world.
 Isa 49:6 And he said, It is a light
thing that thou shouldest be my
servant to raise up the tribes of
Jacob, and to restore the
preserved of Israel: I will also
give thee for a light to the
Gentiles, that thou mayest be
my salvation unto the end of the
earth.
 Acts 13:47 For so hath the Lord
commanded us, saying, I have
set thee to be a light of the
Gentiles, that thou shouldest be
for salvation unto the ends of
the earth. 5
Christ was called
to complete a
work . . . and Paul
was called from
the womb
 Gal 1:15 But when it
pleased God, who
separated me from my
mother's womb, and
called me by his grace, 16
To reveal his Son in me,
that I might preach him
among the heathen;
immediately I conferred
not with flesh and blood:
6
That preaching
work would see
the life and
sufferings of
Christ in Paul’s
ministry
 Gal 3:1 O foolish Galatians,
who hath bewitched you, that
ye should not obey the truth,
before whose eyes Jesus Christ
hath been evidently set forth,
crucified among you?
 Gal 6:17 From henceforth let
no man trouble me: for I bear
in my body the marks of the
Lord Jesus.
 Col 1:24 Who now rejoice in
my sufferings for you, and fill
up that which is behind of the
afflictions of Christ in my flesh
for his body's sake, which is
the church:
7
A great earthquake,
and an angel rolled
back the stone which
was across the door
of the tomb of Jesus.
A great earthquake
opened the prison
doors and loosed the
bands of the captives,
including Paul
 Matt 28:2 And, behold,
there was a great
earthquake: for the angel
of the Lord descended
from heaven, and came
and rolled back the stone
from the door, and sat
upon it.
 Acts 16:26 And suddenly
there was a great
earthquake, so that the
foundations of the prison
were shaken: and
immediately all the doors
were opened, and every
one's bands were loosed.
8
Christ - that "with
his stripes we are
healed".
The Philippian
jailer was 'healed'
by the stripes of
Paul and Silas
 Isa 53:5 But he was
wounded for our
transgressions, he was
bruised for our iniquities:
the chastisement of our
peace was upon him; and
with his stripes we are
healed.
 Acts 16:33 And he took
them the same hour of
the night, and washed
their stripes; and was
baptized, he and all his,
straightway.
9
Jesus the
carpenter and
builder
 Matt 16:18 And I say also
unto thee, That thou art
Peter, and upon this rock I
will build my church; and
the gates of hell shall not
prevail against it.
10
Paul the
tent-maker
- enlarging the tent
to include
the Gentiles
 Acts 18:3 And because he
was of the same craft, he
abode with them, and
wrought: for by their
occupation they were
tentmakers.
 Isa 54:2 Enlarge the place of
thy tent, and let them stretch
forth the curtains of thine
habitations: spare not,
lengthen thy cords, and
strengthen thy stakes; 3 For
thou shalt break forth on the
right hand and on the left;
and thy seed shall inherit the
Gentiles, and make the
desolate cities to be
inhabited.
11
Peter warns Jesus
against going up to
Jerusalem, where
suffering and death
await him.
Paul’s disciples
begged him not to go
to Jerusalem
 Matt 16:22 Then Peter took him, and
began to rebuke him, saying, Be it far
from thee, Lord: this shall not be
unto thee.
 Mark 10:33 Saying, Behold, we go up
to Jerusalem; and the Son of man
shall be delivered unto the chief
priests, and unto the scribes; and
they shall condemn him to death,
and shall deliver him to the Gentiles:
 Mark 10:34 And they shall mock him,
and shall scourge him, and shall spit
upon him, and shall kill him: and the
third day he shall rise again.
 Acts 21:12 And when we heard these
things, both we, and they of that
place, besought him not to go up to
Jerusalem.
12
Jew and
gentile in
opposition to
Jesus
 Acts 3:13-15 13 The God of Abraham,
and of Isaac, and of Jacob, the God of our
fathers, hath glorified his Son Jesus;
whom ye delivered up, and denied him in
the presence of Pilate, when he was
determined to let him go. 14 But ye
denied the Holy One and the Just, and
desired a murderer to be granted unto
you; 15 And killed the Prince of life,
whom God hath raised from the dead;
whereof we are witnesses.
13
Jew and
gentile in
opposition to
Paul
 Acts 21:11-14 11 And when he was come
unto us, he took Paul's girdle, and bound
his own hands and feet, and said, Thus
saith the Holy Ghost, So shall the Jews at
Jerusalem bind the man that owneth this
girdle, and shall deliver him into the
hands of the Gentiles. 12 And when we
heard these things, both we, and they of
that place, besought him not to go up to
Jerusalem. 13 Then Paul answered, What
mean ye to weep and to break mine
heart? for I am ready not to be bound
only, but also to die at Jerusalem for the
name of the Lord Jesus. 14 And when he
would not be persuaded, we ceased,
saying, The will of the Lord be done.
14
Christ before the
high priest
 Matt 26:57, 65 57 And they that
had laid hold on Jesus led him
away to Caiaphas the high priest,
where the scribes and the elders
were assembled. 65 Then the high
priest rent his clothes, saying, He
hath spoken blasphemy; what
further need have we of
witnesses? behold, now ye have
heard his blasphemy. 66 What
think ye? They answered and said,
He is guilty of death. 67 Then did
they spit in his face, and buffeted
him; and others smote him with
the palms of their hands, 68
Saying, Prophesy unto us, thou
Christ, Who is he that smote thee?
15
Paul before the
high priest
 Acts 23:1-3 1 And Paul, earnestly
beholding the council, said, Men
and brethren, I have lived in all
good conscience before God
until this day. 2 And the high
priest Ananias commanded them
that stood by him to smite him
on the mouth. 3 Then said Paul
unto him, God shall smite thee,
thou whited wall: for sittest thou
to judge me after the law, and
commandest me to be smitten
contrary to the law?
16
Both were
charged before
Jews with
blasphemy and
before Gentiles
with sedition
 Mark 14:64 Ye have heard
the blasphemy: what think
ye? And they all
condemned him to be
guilty of death.
 Luke 23:2 And they began
to accuse him, saying, We
found this fellow
perverting the nation, and
forbidding to give tribute
to Caesar, saying that he
himself is Christ a King.
17
Both were
charged before
Jews with
blasphemy and
before Gentiles
with sedition
 Acts 21:28 Crying out,
Men of Israel, help: This is
the man, that teacheth all
men every where against
the people, and the law,
and this place: and further
brought Greeks also into
the temple, and hath
polluted this holy place.
 Acts 24:5 For we have
found this man a pestilent
fellow, and a mover of
sedition among all the
Jews throughout the
world, and a ringleader of
the sect of the Nazarenes:
18
The chief
priests
persuaded the
multitude to
riot,
demanding the
death of Jesus.
 Matt 27:20-23 20 But the chief
priests and elders persuaded the
multitude that they should ask
Barabbas, and destroy Jesus. 21 The
governor answered and said unto
them, Whether of the twain will ye
that I release unto you? They said,
Barabbas. 22 Pilate saith unto them,
What shall I do then with Jesus
which is called Christ? They all say
unto him, Let him be crucified. 23
And the governor said, Why, what
evil hath he done? But they cried
out the more, saying, Let him be
crucified.
19
The crowds
demanded Paul's
death.
 Acts 21:30-33, 36 30 And all the
city was moved, and the people
ran together: and they took Paul,
and drew him out of the temple:
and forthwith the doors were
shut. 31 And as they went about
to kill him, tidings came unto the
chief captain of the band, that all
Jerusalem was in an uproar. 32
Who immediately took soldiers
and centurions, and ran down
unto them: and when they saw
the chief captain and the soldiers,
they left beating of Paul.
36 For the multitude of the people
followed after, crying, Away with
him.
20
A Roman centurion
testified to the
righteousness of
Jesus
Claudius Lysias, the
Roman chief
captain, testified
that Paul had done
nothing worthy of
death
 Luke 23:47 Now when the
centurion saw what was
done, he glorified God,
saying, Certainly this was
a righteous man.
 Acts 23:29 Whom I
perceived to be accused
of questions of their law,
but to have nothing laid
to his charge worthy of
death or of bonds.
21
Jesus was accused
of being possessed
by a demon and of
being "beside
himself“
Paul was accused of
being beside
himself and mad
 John 8:48 Then answered
the Jews, and said unto
him, Say we not well that
thou art a Samaritan, and
hast a devil?
 Mark 3:21 And when his
friends heard of it, they
went out to lay hold on
him: for they said, He is
beside himself.
 Acts 26:24 And as he thus
spake for himself, Festus
said with a loud voice,
Paul, thou art beside
thyself; much learning
doth make thee mad.
22
Pilate repeated at
least three times
that he and Herod
found no fault in
Jesus, and that he
had done nothing
worthy of death
 John 18:38 Pilate saith unto
him, What is truth? And when
he had said this, he went out
again unto the Jews, and saith
unto them, I find in him no
fault at all.
 John 19:4 Pilate therefore went
forth again, and saith unto
them, Behold, I bring him forth
to you, that ye may know that I
find no fault in him.
 John 19:6 When the chief
priests therefore and officers
saw him, they cried out, saying,
Crucify him, crucify him. Pilate
saith unto them, Take ye him,
and crucify him: for I find no
fault in him.
23
Festus, Agrippa
and Bernice
acknowledged
that Paul had
done nothing
worthy of death
or bonds
 Acts 26:30 And when he
had thus spoken, the king
rose up, and the governor,
and Bernice, and they that
sat with them: 31 And
when they were gone
aside, they talked between
themselves, saying, This
man doeth nothing
worthy of death or of
bonds.
24
At the time of the
crucifixion there
was "darkness
over all the earth“
On Paul's ship
journey "neither
sun nor stars in
many days
appeared"
 Luke 23:44 And it was
about the sixth hour, and
there was a darkness over
all the earth until the
ninth hour.
 Acts 27:20 And when
neither sun nor stars in
many days appeared, and
no small tempest lay on
us, all hope that we
should be saved was then
taken away.
25
Jesus was
strengthened by
an angel in the
garden of
Gethsemane
Paul was
comforted by the
angel on the ship
at night in the
storm
 Luke 22:43 And there
appeared an angel unto
him from heaven,
strengthening him.
 Acts 27:23 For there stood
by me this night the angel
of God, whose I am, and
whom I serve,
26
To those who were
given to him, Jesus
promised, "there
shall not an hair of
your head perish"
To those who were
given to him, Paul
stated: "for there
shall not an hair fall
from the head of
any of you"
 Luke 21:18 But there shall
not an hair of your head
perish.
 Acts 27:34 Wherefore I
pray you to take some
meat: for this is for your
health: for there shall not
an hair fall from the head
of any of you.
27
Jesus gave thanks
and broke bread,
and sought that
others should
follow his
example
 Luke 22:19 And he took
bread, and gave thanks,
and brake it, and gave
unto them, saying, This is
my body which is given
for you: this do in
remembrance of me.
 Luke 22:20 Likewise also
the cup after supper,
saying, This cup is the new
testament in my blood,
which is shed for you.
28
Paul did the same
 Acts 27:35 And when he
had thus spoken, he took
bread, and gave thanks to
God in presence of them
all: and when he had
broken it, he began to eat.
36 Then were they all of
good cheer, and they also
took some meat.
29
Saying of Christ: "even so
by the righteousness of
one the free gift came
upon all men unto
justification of life“
In Acts 27:43 the
centurion, "willing to save
Paul", prevented the
soldiers from killing the
prisoners—that is to say,
the prisoners were spared
on account of Paul.
 Rom 5:18 Therefore as by
the offence of one
judgment came upon all
men to condemnation;
even so by the
righteousness of one the
free gift came upon all
men unto justification of
life.
 Acts 27:43 But the
centurion, willing to save
Paul, kept them from their
purpose; and commanded
that they which could
swim should cast
themselves first into the
sea, and get to land:
30
“I should lose nothing,
but should raise it up
again at the last day“,
said the Lord Jesus.
Likewise, of those who
were given to Paul, and
who passed through
the waters with him,
"they escaped all safe
to land"
 John 6:39 And this is the
Father's will which hath
sent me, that of all which
he hath given me I should
lose nothing, but should
raise it up again at the last
day.
 Acts 27:44 And the rest,
some on boards, and
some on broken pieces of
the ship. And so it came
to pass, that they escaped
all safe to land.
31
Death "hath no
more dominion
over" Jesus for,
though being
bruised in the
heel, he bruised
the head of the
serpent
 Rom 6:9 Knowing that Christ
being raised from the dead
dieth no more; death hath no
more dominion over him.
 Gen 3:15 And I will put enmity
between thee and the woman,
and between thy seed and her
seed; it shall bruise thy head,
and thou shalt bruise his heel.
 Heb 2:14 Forasmuch then as
the children are partakers of
flesh and blood, he also
himself likewise took part of
the same; that through death
he might destroy him that
had the power of death, that
is, the devil;
32
Paul was unaffected
by the poisonous
snake bite, and,
though he was
bruised in the hand,
he was able to
destroy the viper
Typically, Paul was
shown as the
resurrected and
immortal Christ.
 Acts 28:3 And when Paul
had gathered a bundle of
sticks, and laid them on
the fire, there came a viper
out of the heat, and
fastened on his hand.
 Acts 28:5 And he shook
off the beast into the fire,
and felt no harm.
33
On the stake,
Jesus was
between an
unbelieving
malefactor and a
believing
malefactor
 Luke 23:39-43 39 And one of
the malefactors which were
hanged railed on him, saying, If
thou be Christ, save thyself and
us. 40 But the other answering
rebuked him, saying, Dost not
thou fear God, seeing thou art in
the same condemnation? 41 And
we indeed justly; for we receive
the due reward of our deeds: but
this man hath done nothing
amiss. 42 And he said unto Jesus,
Lord, remember me when thou
comest into thy kingdom. 43
And Jesus said unto him, Verily I
say unto thee, To day shalt thou
be with me in paradise.
34
In 2 Corinthians
Paul says that his
preaching was
separating those
that are saved
and those that
perish.
 2Cor 2:15 For we are unto
God a sweet savour of
Christ, in them that are
saved, and in them that
perish: 16 To the one we
are the savour of death
unto death; and to the
other the savour of life
unto life. And who is
sufficient for these things?
35
In the garden of
Gethsemane Jesus
prayed three times,
"if it be possible,
let this cup pass
from me"
 Matt 26:39 And he went a
little further, and fell on his
face, and prayed, saying, O
my Father, if it be possible, let
this cup pass from me:
nevertheless not as I will, but
as thou wilt.
 Matt 26:42 He went away
again the second time, and
prayed, saying, O my Father,
if this cup may not pass away
from me, except I drink it, thy
will be done.
 Matt 26:44 And he left them,
and went away again, and
prayed the third time, saying
the same words.
36
Paul "besought the
Lord thrice" that his
thorn in the flesh
might depart from
him
 2Cor 12:7 And lest I
should be exalted above
measure through the
abundance of the
revelations, there was
given to me a thorn in the
flesh, the messenger of
Satan to buffet me, lest I
should be exalted above
measure. 8 For this thing I
besought the Lord thrice,
that it might depart from
me.
37
The disciples
deserted Jesus in
the hour of his
trial
Paul records: "At
my first answer
no man stood
with me, but all
men forsook me"
 Matt 26:56 But all this was
done, that the scriptures
of the prophets might be
fulfilled. Then all the
disciples forsook him, and
fled.
 2Tim 4:16 At my first
answer no man stood with
me, but all men forsook
me: I pray God that it may
not be laid to their charge.
38
Isaiah 53 says of Christ:
"But he was wounded
for our transgressions”
Paul records: "Therefore
I endure all things for
the elect's sakes, that
they may also obtain the
salvation which is in
Christ Jesus with eternal
glory"
 Isaiah 53:5 But he was
wounded for our
transgressions, he was
bruised for our iniquities:
the chastisement of our
peace was upon him; and
with his stripes we are
healed.
 2Tim 2:10 Therefore I
endure all things for the
elect's sakes, that they
may also obtain the
salvation which is in Christ
Jesus with eternal glory.
39
Jesus said to his
disciples just
before he prepared
to go to Jerusalem
for the last time.
Believers who were
to be parted from
Paul sorrowed for
him
 John 16:16 A little while,
and ye shall not see me:
and again, a little while,
and ye shall see me,
because I go to the Father.
 John 16:20 Verily, verily, I
say unto you, That ye shall
weep and lament, but the
world shall rejoice: and ye
shall be sorrowful, but
your sorrow shall be
turned into joy.
 Acts 20:38 Sorrowing
most of all for the words
which he spake, that they
should see his face no
more. And they
accompanied him unto
the ship. 40
Jesus said just
before he died: "It
is finished“
Paul likewise said
at the end of his
life: "I have
finished my
course"
 John 19:30 When Jesus
therefore had received the
vinegar, he said, It is
finished: and he bowed
his head, and gave up the
ghost.
 2Tim 4:7 I have fought a
good fight, I have finished
my course, I have kept the
faith:
41
Jesus appointed his
apostles to enable
the gospel to be
preached
throughout "all the
world
To Timothy, Paul
commissioned him
to send out faithful
men to teach others
also
 Mark 16:15 And he said
unto them, Go ye into all
the world, and preach the
gospel to every creature.
 2Tim 2:2 And the things
that thou hast heard of
me among many
witnesses, the same
commit thou to faithful
men, who shall be able to
teach others also.

Paul as a type of Christ in ministry and suffering

  • 1. Laindon 17th April 2019 Paul as a type of Christ 1
  • 2. . . . .and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it  Matt 16:24 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. 25 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.  Acts 20:24 But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God. 2
  • 3. Like Jesus, Paul was unmarried  1Cor 7:8 I say therefore to the unmarried and widows, It is good for them if they abide even as I.  1Cor 9:5 Have we not power to lead about a sister, a wife, as well as other apostles, and as the brethren of the Lord, and Cephas? 3
  • 4. Jesus was in the darkness of the tomb for three days. Saul was without sight and neither ate nor drank three days  1 Corinthians 15:4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:  Acts 9:9 And he was three days without sight, and neither did eat nor drink. 4
  • 5. Jesus is the light of the world . . . Paul was to be a light to the gentiles  John 9:5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.  Isa 49:6 And he said, It is a light thing that thou shouldest be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved of Israel: I will also give thee for a light to the Gentiles, that thou mayest be my salvation unto the end of the earth.  Acts 13:47 For so hath the Lord commanded us, saying, I have set thee to be a light of the Gentiles, that thou shouldest be for salvation unto the ends of the earth. 5
  • 6. Christ was called to complete a work . . . and Paul was called from the womb  Gal 1:15 But when it pleased God, who separated me from my mother's womb, and called me by his grace, 16 To reveal his Son in me, that I might preach him among the heathen; immediately I conferred not with flesh and blood: 6
  • 7. That preaching work would see the life and sufferings of Christ in Paul’s ministry  Gal 3:1 O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you?  Gal 6:17 From henceforth let no man trouble me: for I bear in my body the marks of the Lord Jesus.  Col 1:24 Who now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up that which is behind of the afflictions of Christ in my flesh for his body's sake, which is the church: 7
  • 8. A great earthquake, and an angel rolled back the stone which was across the door of the tomb of Jesus. A great earthquake opened the prison doors and loosed the bands of the captives, including Paul  Matt 28:2 And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it.  Acts 16:26 And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one's bands were loosed. 8
  • 9. Christ - that "with his stripes we are healed". The Philippian jailer was 'healed' by the stripes of Paul and Silas  Isa 53:5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.  Acts 16:33 And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, straightway. 9
  • 10. Jesus the carpenter and builder  Matt 16:18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. 10
  • 11. Paul the tent-maker - enlarging the tent to include the Gentiles  Acts 18:3 And because he was of the same craft, he abode with them, and wrought: for by their occupation they were tentmakers.  Isa 54:2 Enlarge the place of thy tent, and let them stretch forth the curtains of thine habitations: spare not, lengthen thy cords, and strengthen thy stakes; 3 For thou shalt break forth on the right hand and on the left; and thy seed shall inherit the Gentiles, and make the desolate cities to be inhabited. 11
  • 12. Peter warns Jesus against going up to Jerusalem, where suffering and death await him. Paul’s disciples begged him not to go to Jerusalem  Matt 16:22 Then Peter took him, and began to rebuke him, saying, Be it far from thee, Lord: this shall not be unto thee.  Mark 10:33 Saying, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be delivered unto the chief priests, and unto the scribes; and they shall condemn him to death, and shall deliver him to the Gentiles:  Mark 10:34 And they shall mock him, and shall scourge him, and shall spit upon him, and shall kill him: and the third day he shall rise again.  Acts 21:12 And when we heard these things, both we, and they of that place, besought him not to go up to Jerusalem. 12
  • 13. Jew and gentile in opposition to Jesus  Acts 3:13-15 13 The God of Abraham, and of Isaac, and of Jacob, the God of our fathers, hath glorified his Son Jesus; whom ye delivered up, and denied him in the presence of Pilate, when he was determined to let him go. 14 But ye denied the Holy One and the Just, and desired a murderer to be granted unto you; 15 And killed the Prince of life, whom God hath raised from the dead; whereof we are witnesses. 13
  • 14. Jew and gentile in opposition to Paul  Acts 21:11-14 11 And when he was come unto us, he took Paul's girdle, and bound his own hands and feet, and said, Thus saith the Holy Ghost, So shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man that owneth this girdle, and shall deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles. 12 And when we heard these things, both we, and they of that place, besought him not to go up to Jerusalem. 13 Then Paul answered, What mean ye to weep and to break mine heart? for I am ready not to be bound only, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus. 14 And when he would not be persuaded, we ceased, saying, The will of the Lord be done. 14
  • 15. Christ before the high priest  Matt 26:57, 65 57 And they that had laid hold on Jesus led him away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled. 65 Then the high priest rent his clothes, saying, He hath spoken blasphemy; what further need have we of witnesses? behold, now ye have heard his blasphemy. 66 What think ye? They answered and said, He is guilty of death. 67 Then did they spit in his face, and buffeted him; and others smote him with the palms of their hands, 68 Saying, Prophesy unto us, thou Christ, Who is he that smote thee? 15
  • 16. Paul before the high priest  Acts 23:1-3 1 And Paul, earnestly beholding the council, said, Men and brethren, I have lived in all good conscience before God until this day. 2 And the high priest Ananias commanded them that stood by him to smite him on the mouth. 3 Then said Paul unto him, God shall smite thee, thou whited wall: for sittest thou to judge me after the law, and commandest me to be smitten contrary to the law? 16
  • 17. Both were charged before Jews with blasphemy and before Gentiles with sedition  Mark 14:64 Ye have heard the blasphemy: what think ye? And they all condemned him to be guilty of death.  Luke 23:2 And they began to accuse him, saying, We found this fellow perverting the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, saying that he himself is Christ a King. 17
  • 18. Both were charged before Jews with blasphemy and before Gentiles with sedition  Acts 21:28 Crying out, Men of Israel, help: This is the man, that teacheth all men every where against the people, and the law, and this place: and further brought Greeks also into the temple, and hath polluted this holy place.  Acts 24:5 For we have found this man a pestilent fellow, and a mover of sedition among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes: 18
  • 19. The chief priests persuaded the multitude to riot, demanding the death of Jesus.  Matt 27:20-23 20 But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitude that they should ask Barabbas, and destroy Jesus. 21 The governor answered and said unto them, Whether of the twain will ye that I release unto you? They said, Barabbas. 22 Pilate saith unto them, What shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ? They all say unto him, Let him be crucified. 23 And the governor said, Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out the more, saying, Let him be crucified. 19
  • 20. The crowds demanded Paul's death.  Acts 21:30-33, 36 30 And all the city was moved, and the people ran together: and they took Paul, and drew him out of the temple: and forthwith the doors were shut. 31 And as they went about to kill him, tidings came unto the chief captain of the band, that all Jerusalem was in an uproar. 32 Who immediately took soldiers and centurions, and ran down unto them: and when they saw the chief captain and the soldiers, they left beating of Paul. 36 For the multitude of the people followed after, crying, Away with him. 20
  • 21. • 23. Pilate repeated at least three times that he and Herod found no fault in Jesus, and that he had done nothing worthy of death  John 18:38 Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all.  John 19:4 Pilate therefore went forth again, and saith unto them, Behold, I bring him forth to you, that ye may know that I find no fault in him.  John 19:6 When the chief priests therefore and officers saw him, they cried out, saying, Crucify him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Take ye him, and crucify him: for I find no fault in him. 23
  • 24. Festus, Agrippa and Bernice acknowledged that Paul had done nothing worthy of death or bonds  Acts 26:30 And when he had thus spoken, the king rose up, and the governor, and Bernice, and they that sat with them: 31 And when they were gone aside, they talked between themselves, saying, This man doeth nothing worthy of death or of bonds. 24
  • 25. At the time of the crucifixion there was "darkness over all the earth“ On Paul's ship journey "neither sun nor stars in many days appeared"  Luke 23:44 And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour.  Acts 27:20 And when neither sun nor stars in many days appeared, and no small tempest lay on us, all hope that we should be saved was then taken away. 25

  • 28. Jesus gave thanks and broke bread, and sought that others should follow his example  Luke 22:19 And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.  Luke 22:20 Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you. 28
