This document is the first chapter of a book about the population of the UK. It uses cartograms and maps to show different views of the UK population distribution and life chances. The maps show population density, constituencies, numbers and proportions of 18 year olds, university attendance rates by social class and geography, and differences in expected versus observed university entry rates when accounting for social class. The key point is that these types of maps provide a helpful perspective for viewing and understanding the UK population and variations in life chances across space.
