carbon content and recycling of Information and Communication Technology (ICT)

practitioners in this field. Through examples from a diversity of literature sources this

On Tuesday October 21, 2015, our Introduction to Modern class went to Harrisburg
Area Community College to watch the Rioult Dance NY perform four dance pieces
using musical works of founder, Pascal Rioult, in the Rose Lehrman Arts Center. The
duration of the program was 7:30 9 p.m.
The particular piece that I found the most captivating was City choreographed by
Pascal Rioult and performed by Catherine Cooch, Corinna Lee Nicholson, Michael
Spencer Phillips, and Sabatino A. Verlezza. This piece displayed both the physical
and the mental struggles of each of the four individuals in a city like environment.

Motown vs. Stax
Emerging out of the turbulent civil rights period in the United States, the majority of
the black minority population finally found a means by which to express their voice
to the world through music. This movement stemmed from two extremely different
music studios located in opposite regions of the United States. One of these
companies arose out of the north, which very rigidly rigidly controlled their product
and polished young talent to fit an agenda. In contrast, its opposing studio began in
the deep south and was raw, unrestricted, as well as organic, choosing to let any
artist play regardless of who they were or how they performed. Together, these music
production studios helped break down the racial segregation of black and white
music, although they went about it in polar opposite ways.
Motown Record Company (briefly name Tamala Records), located in Detroit,
Michigan was birthed by Berry Gordy on January 12, 1959. His vision was for the
company to produce black artists to bridge the gap between white and black
segregated music markets and audiences. He dreamed about making an entity that
would appeal to both the wider white pop music audiences as well as the narrower
black Rhythm and Blues one. To obtain this objective, he began to make Black music
more palatable to white pop music consumers not only by the appealing, upbeat pop

Their mutual love and hatred for one another, and for themselves, provides an
intensely dark comedy that exposes their inner conflicts, their racial bigotry and their
low self esteem, as they struggle to survive in a contrived culture to which neither
will ever really belong.
John Fante s description of Los Angeles during the depression of gaunt faces and lost
humanity is haunting and riveting, as told through the eyes of a young man who is
not altogether stable. The smog, traffic, dust, grime and shallow lifestyles of southern
California were already present in 1939, making this story relevant still today. The
earthquake scene in the story is just as realistic as it might be today, complete with
military intervention and the emergence of human kindness in the face of disaster.
Camilla, Arturo, Sammy, Vera and Hellfrick are all non entities in the bustle of L.A.
culture, but all are profoundly human in their suffering, confusion, and vices. All are
battling a poor sense of self worth and struggling to survive in an indifferent world.
Arturo Bandini takes us through this story in intimate first person, exposing us to his
mood swings, his astute observations and his growth as an author and a man.

The son and grandson of stonemasons, Jean Baptiste Carpeaux was born in 1827 in
Valenciennes and moved to Paris at the age of eleven. Beginning in the early 1840s
he studied at the Petite Ecole, the state school for training in the applied arts,
formally called the Ecole Gratuite de Dessin, before entering the Ecole des Beaux
Arts in 1844, where he changed masters repeatedly, oscillating between typical
student ambition (optimal credentials for the Prix de Rome) and his interest in more
liberal approaches. Carpeaux moved from Ecole painter Abel de Pujol (1785 1861),
to the independent sculptor FranГ§ois Rude, and finally to the prestigious Ecole

He entered the imperial circle in 1864 as artistic tutor to the Prince Imperial, and
executed the boy s bust and full scale portrait statue for the prince s parents (both
mid 1860s, marble; MusГ©e d Orsay, Paris). He also received some of the most
significant monumental commissions of the period: the architectural decoration of
the Pavillon de Flore of the Palais du Louvre (1863 1866, Imperial France
Enlightening the World and the Triumph of Flora); and The Dance (1865 1869) for
the facade of the Paris OpГ©ra. His native Valenciennes commissioned several public
projects between 1860 and 1884, including a monument to another of its native artists,
Antoine Watteau (1684 1721).
This extraordinary activity was interrupted by the upheavals after the fall of the
Second Empire and by Carpeaux s increasing frailty with cancer. He executed some
smaller figures and portraits upon commission and completed his monumental
projects in Paris (1868 1874, Observatory Fountain, Jardin du Luxembourg). He
mainly focused on amassing income through commercial edition, hoping to recoup
his devastating financial losses from those projects and from the war. Estranged
from his family, Carpeaux spent the last two years of his life traveling, in the care of
patrons, and in clinics. He died in 1875.
An ambitious entrepreneur even as an Ecole student a flagrant violation of the
academic policy forbidding commerce Carpeaux produced serial works throughout
his career.
