The Nine Billion Names Of God Summary
Science fiction has undoubtedly progressed since the first introduction of the genre. Initially, it was
perceived as a childish genre, which appealed to mainly young boys. However, as science fiction
evolved it became much more than light reading for 10–year–old boys. Considering what we have
read to date, the genre has greatly matured into classic pieces of literature.
As time progressed the work by science fiction writers became more in touch with real world issues.
Many stories in this era began to emphasize the likelihood of a dystopia as opposed to an idealistic
perspective. As technology advanced, people feared what was to come of our society. For instance,
Arthur C Clark presented the topic of science versus religion during his short story, "The Nine
Billion Names of God". While the story does refer to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Clark tells the story of two men who travel to India in order to provide professional scientific
assistance for a monastery. The lamas were determined to acquire the nine billion names of god with
the use of the Mark V super computer, in order to fulfill their sole purpose on earth. However, the
engineers assigned to the task were skeptical of the intentions and beliefs of the lamasery. Arthur C
Clark explored the thought of religion proving to be superior to our advanced technology. During
the 1950s and 1960s, technology was only just beginning to make a noticeable impact on modern
society. Therefore, the idea of this super computer that is introduced in "The Nine Billion Names of
God" was far ahead of its time. Furthermore, the story "Second Variety" by Phillip K Dick also
explores the consequences of our constantly developing technology by incorporating modern day
concerns. The story by Phillip K Dick closely imitates to the ongoing events of the 1950s. "Second
Variety" was written during the same time period of the Cold War. The story depicts the horrific

The Horror Genre in Stories of Stevenson and Greene Essay
The Horror Genre in Stories of Stevenson and Greene
R.L Stevenson's 'The Body–Snatcher' and Graham Greene's 'The End Of The party' are both short
stories that are a part of the horror genre, despite differing in many ways. Throughout this essay, I
am going to compare the differences and the similarities between the two horror stories. I will assess
the way the writers use certain aspects that are part of the horror genre to make their story have an
impact on the reader and have the ability to captivate their reader and keep them engrossed in the
story. I will be focusing on specific areas within each story including, setting, structure, atmosphere,
suspense, endings and also the different types ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The use of isolated areas can be associated with sinister goings on and can add again to the reader's
uneasiness and fear. Also innocent victims can make the reader feel scared and more vulnerable, as
it demonstrates that bad things can happen to anyone. Twists in horror stories are very common and
both these horror stories contain different twists that can shock the reader.
'The Body–Snatcher' is a more typical horror story containing many of these things that I have
mentioned. On the other hand, 'The End Of The Party' differs to 'The Body–Snatcher', with it being
more to do with the mind and appearing quite everyday, and not containing as many of the typical
horror components. But both 'The Body–Snatcher' and 'The End Of The Party' can be placed in the
horror genre as they contain the vital components that make a good horror story.
'The Body–Snatcher' is quite self–explanatory in the title and is about body snatching. It begins "in
the small parlour of the George at Debenham" where we meet the main character, Fettes. Fettes has
an encounter with someone from his past – Macfarlane, who he is obviously not pleased to see for
reasons unknown to the reader at this stage. At the mention of Macfarlane's name "Fettes became
instantly sober", this immediately tells the reader of something that has gone on in the past that may
have been unpleasant to

In modern society within the movie world, we can see which genres are the most striking and
appealing to the audience. The genres that come to mind are adventure, action, fantasy, comedy,
drama, horror and thriller. This essay will go over the how director, filmmaker, screenwriter and
producer Peter Jackson makes practical and effective use of genre to shape and decorate his peculiar
and original creative visual style into the filmmaking world. Most known for his work on 'The Lord

the popular works has been able to create multiple concepts of this detective literature drawing on

Fiction Themes
Fiction is more than just one genre, it is a family that consists of four different genres: contemporary
realistic fiction, historical fiction, fantasy, and science fiction. Each of these genres have themes that
you can categorize different literature into. Themes are very important because each student will
have specific interests and be reluctant to try a new type of book at first. Another reason is that it can
make planning a unit or linking events and books together much easier.
Contemporary realistic fiction is typically very popular with most children because it is very
relatable to their lives and things that they have prior knowledge of. This type of fiction is also
something that could potentially happen in real life or is loosely based on actual events. Some of the
themes of realistic fiction include peer relationships, family relationships, stories about animals,
adventures, schools stores, and sports. These are all things that children can not only relate to easily,
but also things that will Interest them as well. As they get older, romance, coming of age, and
mystery stories will become more and more interesting to them and they will begin to explore all
their reading interests. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The stories are told in a way that would appeal the age/grade level that the writer is conveying the
information to. This type of fiction is also categorized into popular themes, and for good reason.
Some popular themes include stories about different cultures in the twelfth–sixteenth centuries, early
American history (sixteenth– eighteenth centuries), and stories about the west and Indians in the
1800's. As children grow they will also learn about the wars, immigration, the great depression, and
important events that have really shaped American, like the civil rights

As an individual who has does not study the history of literature "Fiction, 1950–1963" by Rob
Latham takes the reader through an interesting back story of the rise and fall of science fiction
through the span of a little more than a decade. "Fiction, 1950–1963" by Rob Latham largely
focuses on the history of science fiction in writing and the path science fiction took to become a
mainstream form of literature. It is a path filled with ups and downs, successes and failures, and a
multitude of writers that attempt to make their mark on the emerging genre.
Throughout the essay Latham agrees with the process of making science fiction more accepted in
mainstream culture. Latham takes the position that through science fiction becoming a legitimately

Some of which include the rising production costs at the end of the fifties that threaten the collapse
of the genre. The end of the fifties brought with it a challenging time for the United States magazine
market, the market declined "from a total of 23 titles in the summer of 1957 to only six by the end of
1960." (80) However science fiction was able to prevail and eventually lead to the New Wave, a
time period in science fiction characterized by a high degree of experimentation and a focus in soft
science. Latham repeatedly explains, in great detail, that the science fiction genre was not lost
because of the expanding book market. "The rise of the book market impacted the field in a number
of important ways." (82) One of the important topics Latham discusses is the fact that science fiction
books were published. For the first time ever, science fiction stories were now available in durable
book formatting. Making the story itself, and its impact last longer than when published in pulp

Crown Clown Downtown Brown Analysis
Summary
The Elementary episode, "Crowned Clown, Downtown Brown" begins with action right away.
There are two men chasing after a clown in the woods. They finally lose the clown and see him dead
buried under leaves. In the few minutes that the men lost the clown he had been murdered. Around
the same time detective Marcus is waiting to meet Chantel for a date. He is sitting at a bar when a
man tries to start a fight with him. Detective Marcus later finds out that the man who started the
fight was Chantel's ex–husband trying to cause problems. Holmes and Marcus investigate in the
woods when they find poison in the New York City's water well. Later the detectives, Holmes and

"Along with the story line about crime, there will usually be a personal story line so viewers have a
chance to know the cops as characters" (Class Notes, para 5). This is best shown when the detective
is meeting up for a date with his girlfriend who ended up not being able to come. While he was
waiting at the bar a guy tried to fight him. He later finds out it was his girlfriend's ex–husband trying
to cause friction between all of them. Elementary does not fit the blueprint for a typical cop show.
The public is to believe that the clown was possibly harmful or bad when all along one of the City's
public water workers was behind contaminating the water and hiring someone to do so. While this
was happening, the clown saw him. Therefore, he got murdered. It was a line of crimes that
happened but, the bad guy does not show up till middle/towards the end of the show. This gives
Elementary a combination of multiple genre types that are similar to different types of cop shows.
Conclusion
Overall, Elementary is a show that does represent good vs. evil but, there is more too it then just
that. It's not your typical blueprint cop show. There is mystery and a twist to each case that makes
the show not predictable to the audience. While also incorporating someone's lifestyle it makes the
show seem more on a personal level for viewers to relate to. The makers of the show did not make

Textual Analysis Of A Movie
With the amount of movies being turned out these days, the average person has many things to
consider when deciding what movies to watch. From genre to special effects, most people must try
and decide if the movie will be worth the money spent for the actual movie going experience. When
the general public can watch movies in the comfort of their own home, often for half the price, they
must consider if the theater experience will add to the movie they want to see. Would it be wiser to
just wait for some free version online? When considering what movie to watch, I take this and more
into account. Immediately in movies, I look at the genre. As the most basic way of separating
movies, people already know what genres they enjoy the most. Genres such as Fantasy, Action,
Adventure, Comedy, and Sci–fi are more preferable to me. If the movie fits in one of these genres, it
has already captured my attention and interest. There are always some exceptions, but good movie
experiences have lead me to stay fairly strict to these categories. I linger in these genres because
their storylines intrigue and tend to offer beautiful visuals. After the genre, I look at the basis,
graphics, and actors. I often look for a storyline I already know, such as book inspired movies, ...

sure to cater to its die–hard comic fans, while appealing to a general audience. For the comic fans,
many "easter eggs" or nods to said comic were provided. But Suicide Squad also makes sure to

Genre Theory
Genre and Genre Film
Introduction to Film
Rachel Kamrowski
Instructor Day
5/2/2016
Genre Theory is used in the categorization of films. Genres are dependent on various factors such as
story line, whom the director is, and what are the audience expectations In using genre theory we
create a short cut in how we describe films. Genres are categorized into and then sub categorized
depending on the story and plot. Fantasy is a genre described as, "Any film with obviously unreal,
magical, or impossible situations, characters, or settings, often overlapping with various other
genres, especially science fiction, but sometimes historical dramas." (Goodykoontz, 2014) Fantasy
is a genre that typically includes a crossover genre, sci–fi, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Low key lighting and odd camera angles are used in this part of the film while Harry searches for
the Sorcerer's stone and battles Voldemort. There is a slight horror aspect to the following scenes as
Harry deals with the antagonist of the film, Voldemort. Horror is a genre that aims to create a sense
of fear, panic, and dread for the audience. These films are often unsettling and rely on scaring the
audience through a portrayal of their worst fears and nightmares. As we grow to love Harry and
realize his biggest fear is the man who killed his parents and also him, and then are forced to watch
him return this brings horror into the mix as a sub–genre.

Film Analysis Of The Romantic Genre And Movie Rocky
Genre theory is used to study films and put them into a classification so that audiences know what
type of film it is before they see it. Genres are categories based on the story of the film, sometimes
the actors and actresses, or even the directors. All films fall under a genre or sub–genre category.
Romantic Comedy is an example of a genre which is light–hearted, humorous story involving
people in love, sometimes overlapping with subgenres such as screwball comedy teen comedy, or
gross–out comedy. ( Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2014, table 4.1). This paper will focus on the romantic
comedy genre and movie Rocky. It will take a better look at the specific conventions of this genre
and how this movie fits the gangster genre. Romantic comedy films create a comic climate through
a series of cues to the audience: subject matter is treated as trivial, jokes and physical humor make
fun of events, and characters are protected from harm (Grindon Leger (2015). Romantic comedy
films usually have a couple that meet and fall in love in some way throughout the movie. In the
movie Rocky Sylvester Stallone as Rocky meets Adrian at the pet shop and realizes she is the
women he wants to be with. Rocky is a want to be boxer at the time who wants to be a professional
boxer and knows Adrian's brother from the gym. When Rocky sees Adrian through the window of
the pet shop he uses the excuse that he buys a fish and asks her out. Adrian agrees and she is a very
bashful lady, she dresses and looks very homely. Rocky and Adrian starting dating and she supports
him through his boxing career. The couple falls in love and they get married. Adrian starts dressing
nice and gets contacts to the point you see her transform into a beautiful lady by the end of the film.
The genre of Romantic comedy is pairing two individuals into a couple with some comedy which
Rocky proves to have. The comedy part would be where Adrian asks Rocky why he boxes and he
says "because he can't dance or sing". Throughout the film there are little conventions to show the
comedy. The film Rocky the first convention would be the setting. In the film it is set in 1976 in the
low income part of Philadelphia. This shows the Rocky and Adrian started out

Similarities Between King Lear And Much Ado About Nothing
Lear Ado
(A Comparative Analysis of Dramatic Genres Between Shakespeare's, King Lear and Much Ado
About Nothing) Within the world of drama and performance, there are two central ends of the genre
spectrum. These are essentially the "light and dark" of the stage. These opposite ends of the
spectrum are comedy and tragedy, respectively. While some people may prefer one genre over the
other, these both find ways to tell great stories with greatly different methods. One eternally famous
playwright, William Shakespeare wrote countless plays in both of these styles. Two exquisite
examples of these genres are his King Lear, and Much Ado About Nothing. These plays demonstrate
the great contrast between comedy and tragedy through the high to low character falls or climbs,
amount of humor, and prominence of death and suffering. The greatest difference between comedy
and tragedy lies in the transition of how characters rise and fall. Comedies typically end with low
characters ending happily, heroes succeeding, and sources of tension find themselves in a ... Show

friends purposely say to trick their respective hopeless romantic into falling in love. "Benedick and
Beatrice are deceived by their friends, but this deception stems from their delusion that they can

American Characters In American Culture
American culture is relatively young but in its short history, it has achieved a great level of depth in
the formation of its' social consciousness. Within this consciousness is contained knowledge of a
variety of recognizable symbols, familiar stories, and famous characters. And perhaps no character
is more recognizable to Americans than the cowboy; the cowboy may not be a specific individual
from history or a tall tale but yet when one hears "cowboy" one can automatically assign specific
traits to them. These traits go beyond a general aesthetic; the cowboy has a specific personality,
code, set of ethics, and governing philosophy. These are largely ahistorical products of our popular
culture but apocryphal nature aside, the perception of the cowboy as a rugged hero has proved to be
resilient in its' ubiquitous recognition. As an illustration of the impact the genre has had on
American culture, critic Andre Bazin (1971) described the Western as "our Odyssey" following
America's own Trojan War––the Civil War. The Western, according to Bazin, is America's
mythology. Making a point in the same vein as Bazin's, Douglas Brode in Dream West (2013) likens
the cowboy to knights, samurai, and even to the Jedi; that is to say he classifies the cowboy as a
mythic figure The Jedi, being fictional characters in film, are pure mythology whereas the others are
ostensibly historical. And obviously it is true that the cowboys, knights, and samurai all existed at
one point in time, but

Take The Wicker Man Analysis
Sometimes it's hard to define a particular horror movie's genre, but in an attempt to sort through the
confusion, I'm going to provide an explanation of both the basic genres in horror, of which there are
about 4 with closely related branches in their family tree. Often horror movies tend to fuse different
film genre elements together to create a horrific masterpiece, or just something awful to watch that
ends in disaster. I'm not talking about the movie plot itself, but those failed attempts at crafting
masterful cinema. Take the Wicker Man, for instance. This film includes elements of psychological
horror, fantasy, macabre, thriller, and even exploitation horror.

Exploitation Horror – Exploitation horror films generally exhibit blood, guts, and gore for the sake
of provoking a shocking reaction in these horrific movies. Splatter flicks (I Spit on Your Grave) are
included in this genre, often along with cannibal (We Are What We Are), sexual deviancy (A
Serbian Film), murderous cult (Bless the Child), and backwoods psycho motifs (House of 1,000
Corpses & the Devils' Reject) running through them.
Urban Legends – Often urban legends come in the form of a horror anthology, which is a set of
stories that can be related on unrelated that are typically short and told by a person in a position of
wisdom, such as Jud Crandall in Pet Cemetary, who is a very elderly, local man who provides
information that to live becomes quite valuable to Dr. Creed, as a new town resident.

Generic convention are elements employed in text that cause them to be labeled as distinct genre
(Devitt 174). These conventions almost have to be used or the text's genre will not be identifiable.
Different genres contains various conventions that can be identified through plot, themes,
characterization, setting, language or subgenre. A crime fiction will contain a mysterious crime,
detectives, a killer and a victim, violence, lamentation for the loss of an innocent life, rich and
professional setting, and a twist ending in some stories. The use of generic convention in stories is
important because it allows readers with specific preference to distinguish and choose between
different genres. This essay looks at the application of generic conventions in three crime fiction
stories, namely The Mousetrap, The Real inspector Hound, and The Murder of Roger Ackroyd.

Similarities Between Comedy And Comedy
Of course, every story has a genre – fantasy, drama, nonfiction, historical – but casual readers rarely
acknowledge the fine details of different works that help define them as part of a certain category.
Some defining features are obvious, like spaceships in a science fiction novel or magic in a fantasy,
but where is the line drawn when it comes to concepts, both big and small, that are simply hard to
define or restrict. No matter how different they may seem, even two completely different genres
may have surprising similarities hidden underneath their exterior; the old cliche "never judge a book
by it's cover" just so happens to have truth to it. However, some may say that this is not the case,
that some works are so different that there cannot be significant parallels between them. With a
sharp eye, though, one can actually start to pick up on unexpected similarities between vastly
different genres, like tragedy and comedy. Although those two words likely have a stark contrast to
each other when the average person thinks of them, a diligent mind can find that works as different
as Aristophanes's Oedipus Rex and Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales often contain similar
themes about human nature and desire for power and happiness. Typically, a comedy is simply
defined as a humorous work. However, what many don't know, is the classic definition of comedy –
it usually involves a rise, and is supposed to end in marriage. Clearly, this definition has changed

Black or female newsreaders, for example, have been appearing more frequently in recent years
therefore representing equality in society. However if generic conventions are simply repeated over
and over the films made could be dull and too predictable. The filmmaker relies upon conventions
but also mixes them with his or her own version and ideas in order to produce a successfully
constructed form of genre.
Nearly all stories in any genre are about situations which are disrupted by a problem for e.g., a
peaceful village is wrecked by robbers and one of the children is taken hostage, the villages find try
to find ways of getting the child back the 'good guy' is used to help the narrative along and therefore
resolves the problem. The purpose of the story provides tension for the audience, as on the other
hand the audience wish the problem to be solved but on the other hand the audience want the story
to continue in order to maintain the pleasure. Narratives have to operate strategies for both moving
towards a solution and yet simultaneously putting it off by complaints.
Genres are popular because they deal with universal dilemmas and appeal to universal needs. For
example, the dilemmas could be the hero or heroine fighting to clear his or her name; good finally
overcoming evil. Genres are entertaining in their own ways

Rhetorical Analysis : Rhetorical Rhetoric Essay
What makes a piece of writing compelling to a reader? Every piece of good writing requires close
attention to a rhetorical situation, genre, and an audience. Writing occurs within a rhetorical
situation and is made up of a speaker, a subject, an audience, and the context (genre). Each of these
criteria builds on one another to make a piece of writing. The speaker or writer can choose what
form of text or genre he/she wants the audience to get out of the context. Genre and the audience
make up a rhetorical situation. The genre and audience both rely on each other immensely to
produce the targets responses.
Rhetorical situations are everywhere. Rhetorical situation is the context in which speakers or writers
create rhetorical discourse. The speaker, or writer (the rhetoric), create arguments based on the
situation that has taken place. The rhetorical situation emphasizes the importance of the situation
which people have to respond to.
According to Bitzer's text, a rhetorical situation is not just understanding the context in which the
speech is located. The rhetorical situation does not refer to the setting, where the interaction between
speaker, audience, subject, and purpose takes place. It does not necessarily depend on a persuasive
situation and is it not embedded in a historical context. According to Bitzer, "A work is rhetorical
because it is a response to a situation of a certain kind" (Bitzer 3). A rhetorical situation has three
main parts: the

Analysis Of A Cybernetic Society By Isabella Furini And...
The use of the science fiction genre in short suite stories such as "A Cybernetic Society" written by
Isabella Furini and Ashna Nadan, helps to convey and raise concerns about our modern society.
Most people might argue that a creative piece is able to convey the message of which the author
intends to convey and it is not dependent on the genre. However, the genre allows the author to be
able to explore a particular context and be able to convey their message in a particular way. The
science fiction genre allows its elements to create a deep contrast of the different societies, and
create a futuristic scenario – exploring the genre's context – and helps to convey the story's overall
message by also using the combination of the unit's concerns. ... Show more content on

The aspects of normality in our society refer to the common use of technology and constant political
influences. The consequences discussed to in this paragraph are the decisions of carrying out the

highlight positive and negative effects in a technology aspect through the first difference being more
so an advantage effect as it shows the advancement of technology and the scientific breakthrough.
However, the second consequence shows a negative effect of technology through it being
excessively used in order to gain something, of which is being the cybernetic brain. In a political
aspect, the consequences of the scenarios tend to also differ in positive and negative effects in the
story, but mainly is seen to be negative due to the second consequence. As the previous paragraphs
have mentioned, the disadvantage of the strong political influence then translates into losses in
society. Combining these aspects of political influence and technology create the scenarios present
in the story, mainly due to the fact that it has been written as a science fiction. These lead to showing
an imbalance in the society creating its dystopia

Short Story : ' My Genre '
Short Story
My genre is a short story. The length is around 10 to 25 pages usually. With around 1500 to 2500
words. Short stories started around the 15th century, In the medieval period. Short stories were used
as entertainment and also used to annotate history and beliefs. Short stories are basically a story
focused on one point. Everything is based of on one single structure or event, and everything goes
on around it. For example, if you are aiming at a target, instead of looking around it, you will look
straight in the middle where you 're going to aim and nowhere else. This is how you write a short
story. Some of the characteristics of a short story are that, they are less complex than a novel, single
setting, and fewer characters. The narrative modes will never change, a person can use first person,
second person and if needed third–person point of view. Furthermore, if the author wants to change
a few things, he can do it because a short story doesn 't have any specific set of rules. The
characteristic usually just helps the author to start a story, but no one has to follow those rules. The
context of a short story is pretty much a summary of the whole story in a few sentences. The
audience can be anyone from a child to an adult.depending on who the author wanted to read his or
her story. If the story was made for little kids than anyone could read it people such as teachers,
students, kids and parents. If the book was made for a college class than the audience

Genre Theory Paper
Genre theory is used in the study of films in order to categorize films. Genre are dependent on
different factors such as who the director is, story line, and audience expectations (Azia, n.d).
Genres are types or categories and genre films that are usually recognizable as part of a certain
genre (Goodykoontz, B., & Jacobs, 2014, section 4.1). To better understand genre there are several
examples to look at. When watching a fantasy film we know that within the movie we will expect to
see unreal, magical, or impossible situations, characters or settings often overlapping with various
other genres (GoodyKoontz, 2014). In musical films you will see that the film mainly focuses on
songs. Genres also have subgenres which are sub categories of a ... Show more content on

Instead of strictly dialogue, the narrative may from time to time be advanced by characters breaking
into song. Numerous subgenres exist within the musical genre from musical comedy to musical
drama to animated musicals to musical documentaries and concert films" (Goodykoontz, B., &
Jacobs, 2014, section 4.4). A scene that helps classify Snow White and the Seven dwarfs into the
animated musical genre is the scene where all the dwarfs are working hard at the jewelry mine and
once work gets over they walk home in a single line singing the song heigh–ho heigh–ho its home
from work we go as they dance and skip on their walk home from work. Another scene that
illustrates a musical/fantasy genre is the scene where Snow White discovers the dwarf's cabin and
with help from the animals of the forest she starts to clean the house while singing whistle while you
work. I'm sure we would all love if our animals could help us with chores around the house but that
will most likely never happen. This is a perfect example of a movie with fantasy genre. The fantasy
genre has events that occur outside the ordinary laws that operate within the universe. Magic is
central to the fantasy genre and fantasy stories often involve journeys and quests like the wicked
queen on a quest to kill Snow White. There are three different ways that fantasy writers set up their
worlds. Some films begin and end in a fantasy world, others start in the real world and a third type
of fantasy is set in the real world but elements of magic intrude upon it (Dewan,

Essay On Cyberpunk
While science fiction was once primarily "about science," it has since evolved into a far–reaching
field that encompasses a variety of subgenres.
⦁ cyberpunk: The cyberpunk genre emerged in the early 1980s; combining cybernetics and punk, the
term was coined by author Bruce Bethke for his 1980 short story Cyberpunk. The time frame is
usually near–future and the settings are often dystopian in nature and characterized by misery.
Common themes in cyberpunk include advances in information technology and especially the
Internet, visually abstracted as cyberspace and artificial intelligence.
⦁ Time travel: Time travel stories have antecedents in the 18th and 19th centuries. Time travel
continues to be a popular subject in modern science fiction, in print, movies, and television episodes
of Stargate SG1 and the BBC television series Doctor Who.
⦁ Alternative history : Alternative history stories are based on the premise that historical events
might have turned out differently. These stories may use time travel to change the past, or may
simply set a story in a universe with a different history from our own.

Genre Exposed In The End Of Science Fiction
Through the science fiction genre we are able to see what is wrong with the world. The genre shows
us the truth about what is going on around us. Stories are inspired by the chaos around us. Shedding
light to situations that need to be exposed. The truth lays in between the lines of the stories. The
science fiction stories answer questions about life and how we are living it and where those
decisions we make might lead us to. Examples come from many stories that lead to societies being
controlled and having no freedom to be individuals. Stories are set in futuristic time settings were
anything is possible. Thanks to those ideas, people out in the real world take those "fake" or

Avatar, a 2009 American epic science fiction film was directed, written, co–produced, and co–edited
by James Cameron. The film's main stars are Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang,
Giovanni Ribisi, Michelle Rodriquez, and Sigourney Weaver.
The story formula or plot is the specific actions and events that filmmakers select, and the order in
which they arrange those events and actions to effectively convey on–screen the movie's narrative to
a viewer. Avatar takes place in a futuristic mid–22nd century, a paraplegic marine, Jake Sully
(Worthington), reports for duty, a mission meant for his now deceased brother, on the lush habitable
moon in the Alpha Centauri star system, named Pandora. A greedy corporate figurehead Parker

The Genre Of Horror Films
First of all, genre is the method categorized a film based on similarities in the narrative elements.
There are a wide range of different types of film genres: detective, action, adventure, gangster or
crime, science fiction, drama, horror, romance, comedy, musical and so on. It is quite difficult to
identify a particular film because a film might have a few of different genres. That is the reason why
sub–genres exist. Sub–genres can help us to more clarity in identify the genre of a film. For
example, a horror film might involve supernatural.thriller, mystery or others. Horror is a classical
genre that has now become far more popular with audiences than perhaps at any other time in its
history. This genre has been around since 1890s and it is one of the oldest genres from Hollywood.
The iconic theme across horror films is usually revolved around mirror, superhuman killer, curse
and so on. The ending will always like return to normalcy and victory over the monstrous. I believe
that this is the ending which most audiences wish to be. There are a few of sub–genres in horror
films which are slasher flicks, supernatural and psychological and they are widely adapted in hybrid
films nowadays. Slasher flicks as known as massacre is a type of horror film that usually involves
murders killing the victims in a violent manner and usually with a tool like knife, axe or others. For
examples are serial killer and mass murder. For psychological sub–genre

Nineteenth Century Short Stories and the Gothic Genre Essay
Nineteenth Century Short Stories and the Gothic Genre The three short stories that I have chosen to
compare and contrast are: The Signalman by Charles Dickens, An Arrest by Ambrose Bearcy and
Napoleon and the Spectre by Charlotte Brontë. All these stories were completed by the mid to late
eighteenth hundreds. The Signalman is set by a railway in Britain, along a lonely stretch of a railway
line in a steep cutting. An Arrest is set in America and for the most part in a forest. Napoleon and the
Spectre is set in Paris. Gothic genre was one of the leading and most used genres of the nineteenth

The darkness also gives a sense of mystery to the author's writing. 'In the glow of an angry sunset,'
the stranger re–visits the line to see the signalman. The word 'angry' is far from comfortable or
romantic. This line also gives an eerie feel to the fading light and gives a feel that suggests that
something is must and is about to happen that is dark and evil. An Arrest by Ambrose Bearcy is a
story of a murderer who was awaiting 'his trial,' escaped by 'knocking down his jailer with an iron
bar,' and went into the forest. It was night and the forest in to which, he entered was renowned for
being wild and unsafe. He goes for many a mile and some how manages to exit the forest and finds
an old road and on the road there stood 'the figure of a man, motionless in the gloom.' The gothic
style protrudes from this line of the novel very clearly and adds to the sense of suspense and fear
that is plaguing this scene. The fugitive is almost face to face with 'the figure of a man,' and feels he
cannot turn his back for fear of being 'filled with buckshot,' so he stood there like a tree. The fugitive
is hoping that if he stands still enough he will become a tree and escape this horror. Until the moon
'sailed into a patch of unclouded sky,' 'the haunted man saw the visible embodiment of law lift an

Genre Theory is used in the categorization of films. Genres are dependent on various factors such as
story line, whom the director is, and what are the audience expectations In using genre theory we

depending on the story and plot. Fantasy is a genre described as, "Any film with obviously unreal,

of fear, panic, and dread for the audience. These films are often unsettling and rely on scaring the
audience through a portrayal of their worst fears and nightmares. As we grow to love Harry and
realize his biggest fear is the man who killed his parents and also him, and then are forced to watch
him return this brings horror into the mix as a sub–genre.

The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas: A Boy And His Dog
Test #3
Question 1 Scholars, critics nor layman can reach a universal agreement on genre definitions, so
how is one to define them? For example, when writing Frankenstein, Mary Shelley did not say she
was writing science fiction, or whatever label was eventually chosen for her work. So what is the
difference between "science fiction" and "horror fiction?" The two genres are often lumped together
yet the questions remain, should they be and are they the same? It is apparent that they are closely
related, but there is one attribute that seems to set them apart. The emotion of terror, fear or horror
that is infused throughout the story, is the hallmark of true "horror fiction." Science fiction, loosely
defined, is literature that involves elements of science and technology as the setting for a narrative
or as a source of plot conflict. The science and technology should be related to existing scientific
fact (not mere fantasy) and usually these stories take ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Within each of the films, the revenge narratives are both set around the female, as in 'The searchers',
Ethan and Martin aim to save the young girl Debbie, and in 'Unforgiven', Will, Ned and the

seen to predictable and formulaic as these two western films show how they both follow similar
structures and narratives.
The theorists Propp and Todorov have focused on the similarity in narrative across different genres.
They suggest that genres that are different from one another in terms of visual, verbal and musical
signifiers operate according to the same narrative structures. Propp puts forward the story functions
of hero, villain and donor etc, and Todorov puts forward the equilibrium narrative theory. These two
theorists therefore show, how genre could be seen to be predictable and formulaic, as both of their
theories can be applies to 'The Searchers' and 'Unforgiven', and they also believe they can be applied
to many other genres and films.

main hero within the film, Martin is the main helper throughout the film and Debbie is seen as the
princess who needs to be saved. The same story function can

Literary Analysis Of 'The Searchers( 1956 ) And Taxi Driver'
The term "genre" is referenced frequently when describing film, literature, music, and other
mediums of artistry, and yet attempting to define the term itself is difficult. Genre studies are rife
with uncertainty and conflicting opinions on how best to define and research genre. Some theorists
opt for a semantic approach, a broader categorization a genre that encompasses a large number of
films, the building blocks of which are commonplace across that genre. In contrast to the semantic
theorists, some prefer a syntactic approach, isolating select films which most ideally represent the
themes and structural conventions of that genre. There exists a third interpretation, a

Also present throughout the genre is the continual search for a national identity in a landscape of
drastic change. This includes an attempt to overcome dialectical and communicative problems at the
core of American society. These are conventions included in the genre's syntax, and they accompany
a "Bundle of Oppositions" which often play a key role in a character's motivation and the plot of the
Western film itself. These divergent concepts include: "purity v. corruption", "self–knowledge v.
illusion", "savagery v. humanity", and "brutalization v. refinement". Apart from the aforementioned
syntactical conventions of the genre, the semantics of the Western are easily spotted and used in the
vast majority of classical Western films. These more noticeable characteristics include the setting of
the legendary Western frontier, guns and gun battles, violence, horses, and stock characters. One of
these archetypal characters is the "Frontier Hero", a character identified with the landscape of the
west, and whose purpose in the film is to purge that landscape of obstacles in the way of its
development. Also included in this generic cast of the Western are the "tough/soft Cowboy", the
"savage Indian", the "strong but tender woman", the "out of touch antihero", and the "lonely sheriff".
These semantics are commonplace in many archaic westerns, and yet their prominence has faded as
time passes.* The Searchers is a classical Western to the extreme, embodying

murder, scandal, and everything in between. While most mystery stories involve assassination,
"Unlike many detective stories, the Holmes don't necessarily have a murder" (Horsley). Of course,
you might not unearth an instance of Sherlock Holmes chasing down a missing cat, because even his
least significant cases are of acute importance. Important cases seize the reader's attention, and make
the solution of the case more urgent.
The opening case of a Holmes story often leads to a second account. Although there are some
exceptions like A Case of Identity in which Holmes does not leave Baker Street, Holmes usually
attends to the crime scene to investigate. He wastes no time in doing so: "Holmes visits the scene of
the crime, and he does so with rapidity" (Holeman). Time and again, the original puzzle is of lower
import than the latter. Holeman notes that "The duo takes the investigation to the scene of the crime,

The Nine Billion Names Of God Summary

  • 1. The Nine Billion Names Of God Summary Science fiction has undoubtedly progressed since the first introduction of the genre. Initially, it was perceived as a childish genre, which appealed to mainly young boys. However, as science fiction evolved it became much more than light reading for 10–year–old boys. Considering what we have read to date, the genre has greatly matured into classic pieces of literature. As time progressed the work by science fiction writers became more in touch with real world issues. Many stories in this era began to emphasize the likelihood of a dystopia as opposed to an idealistic perspective. As technology advanced, people feared what was to come of our society. For instance, Arthur C Clark presented the topic of science versus religion during his short story, "The Nine Billion Names of God". While the story does refer to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Clark tells the story of two men who travel to India in order to provide professional scientific assistance for a monastery. The lamas were determined to acquire the nine billion names of god with the use of the Mark V super computer, in order to fulfill their sole purpose on earth. However, the engineers assigned to the task were skeptical of the intentions and beliefs of the lamasery. Arthur C Clark explored the thought of religion proving to be superior to our advanced technology. During the 1950s and 1960s, technology was only just beginning to make a noticeable impact on modern society. Therefore, the idea of this super computer that is introduced in "The Nine Billion Names of God" was far ahead of its time. Furthermore, the story "Second Variety" by Phillip K Dick also explores the consequences of our constantly developing technology by incorporating modern day concerns. The story by Phillip K Dick closely imitates to the ongoing events of the 1950s. "Second Variety" was written during the same time period of the Cold War. The story depicts the horrific ... • 3. The Horror Genre in Stories of Stevenson and Greene Essay The Horror Genre in Stories of Stevenson and Greene R.L Stevenson's 'The Body–Snatcher' and Graham Greene's 'The End Of The party' are both short stories that are a part of the horror genre, despite differing in many ways. Throughout this essay, I am going to compare the differences and the similarities between the two horror stories. I will assess the way the writers use certain aspects that are part of the horror genre to make their story have an impact on the reader and have the ability to captivate their reader and keep them engrossed in the story. I will be focusing on specific areas within each story including, setting, structure, atmosphere, suspense, endings and also the different types ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The use of isolated areas can be associated with sinister goings on and can add again to the reader's uneasiness and fear. Also innocent victims can make the reader feel scared and more vulnerable, as it demonstrates that bad things can happen to anyone. Twists in horror stories are very common and both these horror stories contain different twists that can shock the reader. 'The Body–Snatcher' is a more typical horror story containing many of these things that I have mentioned. On the other hand, 'The End Of The Party' differs to 'The Body–Snatcher', with it being more to do with the mind and appearing quite everyday, and not containing as many of the typical horror components. But both 'The Body–Snatcher' and 'The End Of The Party' can be placed in the horror genre as they contain the vital components that make a good horror story. 'The Body–Snatcher' is quite self–explanatory in the title and is about body snatching. It begins "in the small parlour of the George at Debenham" where we meet the main character, Fettes. Fettes has an encounter with someone from his past – Macfarlane, who he is obviously not pleased to see for reasons unknown to the reader at this stage. At the mention of Macfarlane's name "Fettes became instantly sober", this immediately tells the reader of something that has gone on in the past that may have been unpleasant to ... • 11. Fiction Themes Fiction is more than just one genre, it is a family that consists of four different genres: contemporary realistic fiction, historical fiction, fantasy, and science fiction. Each of these genres have themes that you can categorize different literature into. Themes are very important because each student will have specific interests and be reluctant to try a new type of book at first. Another reason is that it can make planning a unit or linking events and books together much easier. Contemporary realistic fiction is typically very popular with most children because it is very relatable to their lives and things that they have prior knowledge of. This type of fiction is also something that could potentially happen in real life or is loosely based on actual events. Some of the themes of realistic fiction include peer relationships, family relationships, stories about animals, adventures, schools stores, and sports. These are all things that children can not only relate to easily, but also things that will Interest them as well. Rob Latham's 'Fiction, 1950-1963' As an individual who has does not study the history of literature "Fiction, 1950–1963" by Rob Latham takes the reader through an interesting back story of the rise and fall of science fiction through the span of a little more than a decade. "Fiction, 1950–1963" by Rob Latham largely focuses on the history of science fiction in writing and the path science fiction took to become a mainstream form of literature. It is a path filled with ups and downs, successes and failures, and a multitude of writers that attempt to make their mark on the emerging genre. Throughout the essay Latham agrees with the process of making science fiction more accepted in mainstream culture. The end of the fifties brought with it a challenging time for the United States magazine market, the market declined "from a total of 23 titles in the summer of 1957 to only six by the end of 1960." (80) However science fiction was able to prevail and eventually lead to the New Wave, a time period in science fiction characterized by a high degree of experimentation and a focus in soft science. Latham repeatedly explains, in great detail, that the science fiction genre was not lost because of the expanding book market. "The rise of the book market impacted the field in a number of important ways." (82) One of the important topics Latham discusses is the fact that science fiction books were published. For the first time ever, science fiction stories were now available in durable book formatting. Making the story itself, and its impact last longer than when published in pulp fiction ... They finally lose the clown and see him dead buried under leaves. In the few minutes that the men lost the clown he had been murdered. Around the same time detective Marcus is waiting to meet Chantel for a date. He is sitting at a bar when a man tries to start a fight with him. Detective Marcus later finds out that the man who started the fight was Chantel's ex–husband trying to cause problems. Holmes and Marcus investigate in the woods when they find poison in the New York City's water well. Later the detectives, Holmes and Watson find out a man who worked for the city and dealt with the public ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "Along with the story line about crime, there will usually be a personal story line so viewers have a chance to know the cops as characters" (Class Notes, para 5). This is best shown when the detective is meeting up for a date with his girlfriend who ended up not being able to come. While he was waiting at the bar a guy tried to fight him. He later finds out it was his girlfriend's ex–husband trying to cause friction between all of them. Elementary does not fit the blueprint for a typical cop show. The public is to believe that the clown was possibly harmful or bad when all along one of the City's public water workers was behind contaminating the water and hiring someone to do so. While this was happening, the clown saw him. Therefore, he got murdered. It was a line of crimes that happened but, the bad guy does not show up till middle/towards the end of the show. This gives Elementary a combination of multiple genre types that are similar to different types of cop shows. Conclusion Overall, Elementary is a show that does represent good vs. evil but, there is more too it then just that. It's not your typical blueprint cop show. There is mystery and a twist to each case that makes the show not predictable to the audience. While also incorporating someone's lifestyle it makes the show seem more on a personal level for viewers to relate to. The makers of the show did not make everything ... • 19. Textual Analysis Of A Movie With the amount of movies being turned out these days, the average person has many things to consider when deciding what movies to watch. From genre to special effects, most people must try and decide if the movie will be worth the money spent for the actual movie going experience. When the general public can watch movies in the comfort of their own home, often for half the price, they must consider if the theater experience will add to the movie they want to see. Would it be wiser to just wait for some free version online? When considering what movie to watch, I take this and more into account. Immediately in movies, I look at the genre. As the most basic way of separating movies, people already know what genres they enjoy the most. Genres such as Fantasy, Action, Adventure, Comedy, and Sci–fi are more preferable to me. If the movie fits in one of these genres, it has already captured my attention and interest. There are always some exceptions, but good movie experiences have lead me to stay fairly strict to these categories. I linger in these genres because their storylines intrigue and tend to offer beautiful visuals. After the genre, I look at the basis, graphics, and actors. Genres are dependent on various factors such as story line, whom the director is, and what are the audience expectations In using genre theory we create a short cut in how we describe films. Fantasy is a genre described as, "Any film with obviously unreal, magical, or impossible situations, characters, or settings, often overlapping with various other genres, especially science fiction, but sometimes historical dramas." • 23. Film Analysis Of The Romantic Genre And Movie Rocky Genre theory is used to study films and put them into a classification so that audiences know what type of film it is before they see it. Genres are categories based on the story of the film, sometimes the actors and actresses, or even the directors. All films fall under a genre or sub–genre category. Romantic Comedy is an example of a genre which is light–hearted, humorous story involving people in love, sometimes overlapping with subgenres such as screwball comedy teen comedy, or gross–out comedy. ( Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2014, table 4.1). This paper will focus on the romantic comedy genre and movie Rocky. It will take a better look at the specific conventions of this genre and how this movie fits the gangster genre. Romantic comedy films create a comic climate through a series of cues to the audience: subject matter is treated as trivial, jokes and physical humor make fun of events, and characters are protected from harm (Grindon Leger (2015). Romantic comedy films usually have a couple that meet and fall in love in some way throughout the movie. In the movie Rocky Sylvester Stallone as Rocky meets Adrian at the pet shop and realizes she is the women he wants to be with. Rocky is a want to be boxer at the time who wants to be a professional boxer and knows Adrian's brother from the gym. When Rocky sees Adrian through the window of the pet shop he uses the excuse that he buys a fish and asks her out. Adrian agrees and she is a very bashful lady, she dresses and looks very homely. Rocky and Adrian starting dating and she supports him through his boxing career. The couple falls in love and they get married. Adrian starts dressing nice and gets contacts to the point you see her transform into a beautiful lady by the end of the film. The genre of Romantic comedy is pairing two individuals into a couple with some comedy which Rocky proves to have. The comedy part would be where Adrian asks Rocky why he boxes and he says "because he can't dance or sing". Throughout the film there are little conventions to show the comedy. The film Rocky the first convention would be the setting. In the film it is set in 1976 in the low income part of Philadelphia. This shows the Rocky and Adrian started out ... Similarities Between King Lear And Much Ado About Nothing Lear Ado (A Comparative Analysis of Dramatic Genres Between Shakespeare's, King Lear and Much Ado About Nothing) Within the world of drama and performance, there are two central ends of the genre spectrum. These are essentially the "light and dark" of the stage. These opposite ends of the spectrum are comedy and tragedy, respectively. While some people may prefer one genre over the other, these both find ways to tell great stories with greatly different methods. One eternally famous playwright, William Shakespeare wrote countless plays in both of these styles. Two exquisite examples of these genres are his King Lear, and Much Ado About Nothing. These plays demonstrate the great contrast between comedy and tragedy through the high to low character falls or climbs, amount of humor, and prominence of death and suffering. The greatest difference between comedy and tragedy lies in the transition of how characters rise and fall. • 27. American Characters In American Culture American culture is relatively young but in its short history, it has achieved a great level of depth in the formation of its' social consciousness. Within this consciousness is contained knowledge of a variety of recognizable symbols, familiar stories, and famous characters. And perhaps no character is more recognizable to Americans than the cowboy; the cowboy may not be a specific individual from history or a tall tale but yet when one hears "cowboy" one can automatically assign specific traits to them. These traits go beyond a general aesthetic; the cowboy has a specific personality, code, set of ethics, and governing philosophy. These are largely ahistorical products of our popular culture but apocryphal nature aside, the perception of the cowboy as a rugged hero has proved to be resilient in its' ubiquitous recognition. As an illustration of the impact the genre has had on American culture, critic Andre Bazin (1971) described the Western as "our Odyssey" following America's own Trojan War––the Civil War. The Western, according to Bazin, is America's mythology. Making a point in the same vein as Bazin's, Douglas Brode in Dream West (2013) likens the cowboy to knights, samurai, and even to the Jedi; that is to say he classifies the cowboy as a mythic figure The Jedi, being fictional characters in film, are pure mythology whereas the others are ostensibly historical. • 37. Similarities Between Comedy And Comedy Of course, every story has a genre – fantasy, drama, nonfiction, historical – but casual readers rarely acknowledge the fine details of different works that help define them as part of a certain category. Some defining features are obvious, like spaceships in a science fiction novel or magic in a fantasy, but where is the line drawn when it comes to concepts, both big and small, that are simply hard to define or restrict. No matter how different they may seem, even two completely different genres may have surprising similarities hidden underneath their exterior; the old cliche "never judge a book by it's cover" just so happens to have truth to it. However, some may say that this is not the case, that some works are so different that there cannot be significant parallels between them. With a sharp eye, though, one can actually start to pick up on unexpected similarities between vastly different genres, like tragedy and comedy. Although those two words likely have a stark contrast to each other when the average person thinks of them, a diligent mind can find that works as different as Aristophanes's Oedipus Rex and Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales often contain similar themes about human nature and desire for power and happiness. Typically, a comedy is simply defined as a humorous work. However, what many don't know, is the classic definition of comedy – it usually involves a rise, and is supposed to end in marriage. Black or female newsreaders, for example, have been appearing more frequently in recent years therefore representing equality in society. However if generic conventions are simply repeated over and over the films made could be dull and too predictable. The filmmaker relies upon conventions but also mixes them with his or her own version and ideas in order to produce a successfully constructed form of genre. Nearly all stories in any genre are about situations which are disrupted by a problem for e.g., a peaceful village is wrecked by robbers and one of the children is taken hostage, the villages find try to find ways of getting the child back the 'good guy' is used to help the narrative along and therefore resolves the problem. The purpose of the story provides tension for the audience, as on the other hand the audience wish the problem to be solved but on the other hand the audience want the story to continue in order to maintain the pleasure. Narratives have to operate strategies for both moving towards a solution and yet simultaneously putting it off by complaints. Genres are popular because they deal with universal dilemmas and appeal to universal needs. For example, the dilemmas could be the hero or heroine fighting to clear his or her name; good finally overcoming evil. Genres are entertaining in their own ways ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 43. Rhetorical Analysis : Rhetorical Rhetoric Essay What makes a piece of writing compelling to a reader? Every piece of good writing requires close attention to a rhetorical situation, genre, and an audience. Writing occurs within a rhetorical situation and is made up of a speaker, a subject, an audience, and the context (genre). Each of these criteria builds on one another to make a piece of writing. The speaker or writer can choose what form of text or genre he/she wants the audience to get out of the context. Genre and the audience make up a rhetorical situation. The genre and audience both rely on each other immensely to produce the targets responses. Rhetorical situations are everywhere. Rhetorical situation is the context in which speakers or writers create rhetorical discourse. The speaker, or writer (the rhetoric), create arguments based on the situation that has taken place. The rhetorical situation emphasizes the importance of the situation which people have to respond to. According to Bitzer's text, a rhetorical situation is not just understanding the context in which the speech is located. The rhetorical situation does not refer to the setting, where the interaction between speaker, audience, subject, and purpose takes place. It does not necessarily depend on a persuasive situation and is it not embedded in a historical context. According to Bitzer, "A work is rhetorical because it is a response to a situation of a certain kind" (Bitzer 3). A rhetorical situation has three main parts: the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

'In the glow of an angry sunset,' the stranger re–visits the line to see the signalman. The word 'angry' is far from comfortable or romantic. This line also gives an eerie feel to the fading light and gives a feel that suggests that something is must and is about to happen that is dark and evil. An Arrest by Ambrose Bearcy is a story of a murderer who was awaiting 'his trial,' escaped by 'knocking down his jailer with an iron bar,' and went into the forest. It was night and the forest in to which, he entered was renowned for being wild and unsafe. He goes for many a mile and some how manages to exit the forest and finds an old road and on the road there stood 'the figure of a man, motionless in the gloom.' The gothic style protrudes from this line of the novel very clearly and adds to the sense of suspense and fear that is plaguing this scene. The fugitive is almost face to face with 'the figure of a man,' and feels he cannot turn his back for fear of being 'filled with buckshot,' so he stood there like a tree. The fugitive is hoping that if he stands still enough he will become a tree and escape this horror. Until the moon 'sailed into a patch of unclouded sky,' 'the haunted man saw the visible embodiment of law lift an arm and point significantly beyond him.' At which 'he ... • 63. Genre Theory Genre and Genre Film Introduction to Film Rachel Kamrowski Instructor Day 5/2/2016 Genre Theory is used in the categorization of films. Genres are dependent on various factors such as story line, whom the director is, and what are the audience expectations In using genre theory we create a short cut in how we describe films. Genres are categorized into and then sub categorized depending on the story and plot. Fantasy is a genre described as, "Any film with obviously unreal, magical, or impossible situations, characters, or settings, often overlapping with various other genres, especially science fiction, but sometimes historical dramas." (Goodykoontz, 2014) Fantasy is a genre that typically includes a crossover genre, sci–fi, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Low key lighting and odd camera angles are used in this part of the film while Harry searches for the Sorcerer's stone and battles Voldemort. There is a slight horror aspect to the following scenes as Harry deals with the antagonist of the film, Voldemort. Horror is a genre that aims to create a sense of fear, panic, and dread for the audience. These films are often unsettling and rely on scaring the audience through a portrayal of their worst fears and nightmares. As we grow to love Harry and realize his biggest fear is the man who killed his parents and also him, and then are forced to watch him return this brings horror into the mix as a sub–genre. • 65. The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas: A Boy And His Dog Test #3 Question 1 Scholars, critics nor layman can reach a universal agreement on genre definitions, so how is one to define them? For example, when writing Frankenstein, Mary Shelley did not say she was writing science fiction, or whatever label was eventually chosen for her work. So what is the difference between "science fiction" and "horror fiction?" The two genres are often lumped together yet the questions remain, should they be and are they the same? It is apparent that they are closely related, but there is one attribute that seems to set them apart. The emotion of terror, fear or horror that is infused throughout the story, is the hallmark of true "horror fiction." Science fiction, loosely defined, is literature that involves elements of science and technology as the setting for a narrative or as a source of plot conflict. The science and technology should be related to existing scientific fact (not mere fantasy) and usually these stories take ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "Blood Music" does instill fear, but not until the end when it is revealed what actually is about to happen to the whole of humanity. The author states, "Already the plumbing has been invaded. People throughout the building are undergoing transformation. How many times has this happened elsewhere?" This ominous question is definitely meant to frighten the reader. On the other hand, in "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas," it is a matter of the reader's perception if the torture of one child for the sake of the rest of the society is horrific or just a part of that society's reality. Since the inhabitants are unable to do anything to change the situation, the title says it all. There are some who walked away, but what did they gain? Furthermore, what did they have to lose if they did? A definite catch twenty–two ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Genre Films' Predictability and Formulaicity Essay Genre Films' Predictability and Formulaicity This essay shall discuss whether 'Genre films are predictable and formulaic', looking at the Western genre, and using the example films of, 'The Searchers' and 'Unforgiven'. Genre is a fundamental means by which we communicate especially in storytelling. If looking at genre in terms of Thomas Shatz, he puts forward the theory of similarity and overlap. He adopts a thematic and ideological approach, which identifies only two genres; the genre of order and the genre of integration. In this case the Western would be categorised into the genre of order. This essay shall also look at how genre films change over time, due to changes in society, as characters ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Within each of the films, the revenge narratives are both set around the female, as in 'The searchers', Ethan and Martin aim to save the young girl Debbie, and in 'Unforgiven', Will, Ned and the Schofield Kid aim to get revenge for the female prostitutes, this therefore shows how genre could be seen to predictable and formulaic as these two western films show how they both follow similar structures and narratives. The theorists Propp and Todorov have focused on the similarity in narrative across different genres. They suggest that genres that are different from one another in terms of visual, verbal and musical signifiers operate according to the same narrative structures. Propp puts forward the story functions of hero, villain and donor etc, and Todorov puts forward the equilibrium narrative theory. These two theorists therefore show, how genre could be seen to be predictable and formulaic, as both of their theories can be applies to 'The Searchers' and 'Unforgiven', and they also believe they can be applied to many other genres and films. The characters within 'The Searchers' fit into Propps story function as it is shown that, Ethan is the main hero within the film, Martin is the main helper throughout the film and Debbie is seen as the princess who needs to be saved. • 73. Literary Analysis Of 'The Searchers( 1956 ) And Taxi Driver' The term "genre" is referenced frequently when describing film, literature, music, and other mediums of artistry, and yet attempting to define the term itself is difficult. Genre studies are rife with uncertainty and conflicting opinions on how best to define and research genre. Some theorists opt for a semantic approach, a broader categorization a genre that encompasses a large number of films, the building blocks of which are commonplace across that genre. In contrast to the semantic theorists, some prefer a syntactic approach, isolating select films which most ideally represent the themes and structural conventions of that genre. There exists a third interpretation, a semantic/syntactic approach, which takes into consideration all ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Also present throughout the genre is the continual search for a national identity in a landscape of drastic change. This includes an attempt to overcome dialectical and communicative problems at the core of American society. These are conventions included in the genre's syntax, and they accompany a "Bundle of Oppositions" which often play a key role in a character's motivation and the plot of the Western film itself. These divergent concepts include: "purity v. corruption", "self–knowledge v. illusion", "savagery v. humanity", and "brutalization v. refinement". Apart from the aforementioned syntactical conventions of the genre, the semantics of the Western are easily spotted and used in the vast majority of classical Western films. These more noticeable characteristics include the setting of the legendary Western frontier, guns and gun battles, violence, horses, and stock characters. One of these archetypal characters is the "Frontier Hero", a character identified with the landscape of the west, and whose purpose in the film is to purge that landscape of obstacles in the way of its development. Also included in this generic cast of the Western are the "tough/soft Cowboy", the "savage Indian", the "strong but tender woman", the "out of touch antihero", and the "lonely sheriff". These semantics are commonplace in many archaic westerns, and yet their prominence has faded as time passes.* The Searchers is a classical Western to the extreme, embodying ... Both of his parents were English professors, so he has always read a lot, especially in graduate school. He is himself a novelist, with several books at the number one spot on the New York Times bestseller list. He has also studied literature, just like his parents, and is now an experienced book critic at 'Time Magazine'. Lev Grossman cleverly starts out his article 'Feeding on Fantasy' with telling a story. The Detective Story Genre: Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes Stories One of the most popular literary forms is the detective genre. The most remarkable detective author of all time is the late nineteenth century writer Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. His most prominent works are the famous Sherlock Holmes stories. These novels and short stories set the standard for the genre. Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories can be considered a model for detective fiction because each is centered on a mystery, Sherlock is a brilliant detective, and clues are a prerequisite for success. Watson stated "So accustomed was I to his invariable success that the very possibility of his failing had ceased to enter my mind" (Doyle 218). Holmes fails, but the antagonist decides not to utilize the pictures after all. The mystery in Holmes's stories can be a wide variety of things: stolen fortune, murder, scandal, and everything in between. While most mystery stories involve assassination, "Unlike many detective stories, the Holmes don't necessarily have a murder" (Horsley). Of course, you might not unearth an instance of Sherlock Holmes chasing down a missing cat, because even his least significant cases are of acute importance. Important cases seize the reader's attention, and make the solution of the case more urgent. The opening case of a Holmes story often leads to a second account. Although there are some exceptions like A Case of Identity in which Holmes does not leave Baker Street, Holmes usually attends to the crime scene to investigate. He wastes no time in doing so: "Holmes visits the scene of the crime, and he does so with rapidity" (Holeman). Time and again, the original puzzle is of lower import than the latter. Holeman notes that "The duo takes the investigation to the scene of the crime, or the site where the crime is to be committed. Often the main crime has yet to be committed" ...
