The natural forests of Palawan are home to many endemic plant and animal species not found elsewhere in the country, including 1 amphibian species, 27 bird species, 19 mammal species, and 24 reptile species, as well as at least 1,700 plant species. Reforestation 33 years after clearing forests for mining does not restore the original biodiversity and many species may already be threatened or extinct. The Save Palawan Movement advocates prohibiting mining in key biodiversity areas like Palawan to protect endangered flora and fauna that have taken millions of years to evolve.
