2ADD A FOOTER
What is the sustainable development of a
country?
3ADD A FOOTER
We know development means continuous improvement which is required for all
spheres of life.
And the economic development that is conducted without depletion of natural
resources is known as sustainable development .
• The aim of sustainable development is to balance our economic,
environmental and social needs, allowing prosperity for now and future
generations.
• Factors that affect to achieve sustainable development ;
• Availability of natural(mineral) resources .
• Exploration and exploitation of natural resources with proper development .
• Development of mineral based industries.
• Preservation , conservation and proper utilization of mineral resources
• Dependence on renewable resources as much as possible .
Sustainable Development
The sustainable development of a
nation’s infrastructure depend on :
• Relative richness or availability of sufficient mineral
resources
• Technological know how
• Capability to explore and exploit new mineral resources
• Management capability to develop these resources properly
• Wisdom in utilizing these resources properly in
development activities
ADD A FOOTER 4
Sustainable Development
5ADD A FOOTER
Reasons of developing countries far behind
in sustainable mineral development
comparing with developed countries :
• Lack of good socio – economic infrastructure .
• Dependency on foreign expertise which costs
foreign currency.
• Lack of modern technological knowledge .
• Lack of educated and skilled human resources
.
• Lack of self confidence .
• Misuse of natural resources due to
unawareness / negligence .
To get sustainable development of a
country, it is required ………..
6
To develop the mineral based industries of
that country………….

Mineral based industries in Bangladesh :
8ADD A FOOTER
• The present of metallic deposits enhance the development of mineral based industries of a country but we have
lack of this.
• The mineral industry of Bangladesh mainly produced cement, coal, natural gas, iron and steel, petroleum, salt and
stone
• According to the Central Bank of Bangladesh, in fiscal year 2013 (July 2013 to June 2014), mining and quarrying
accounted for about 1.6% of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP), and the construction sector accounted
for about 6.9% of the country’s GDP (*3)
• The country’s total exports were valued at about $29.8 billion compared with $26.6 billion in fiscal year 2013,
which was an increase of 12%; similarly, the total value of imports increased by 9% to $36.6 billion from $33.6
billion in(*3)
• Imports of iron, steel, and other base metals (unspecified) were valued at $2.9 billion, which was an increase of
1% compared with that of fiscal year 2013 (*3)
• Imports of crude petroleum were valued at $72 million, which was an increase of 19.1% compared with that of
fiscal year 2013 (*3)
• The Bangladesh Oil, Gas and Mineral Corp. (Petrobangla) is the Government entity that is responsible for the
exploration, production, and transmission and distribution of natural gas and oil in Bangladesh.(*3)
Mineral based industries in Bangldesh :

9ADD A FOOTER
• Petrobangla was also in charge of the development of coal and some nonfuel mineral deposits that included
industrial mineral deposits
• The exploration and production of coal and granite were performed by Petrobangla’s subsidiaries Barapukuria
Coal Mining Co. Ltd. (BCMCL) and Maddhapara Granite Mining Co. Ltd. (MGMCL), respectively
• Eastern Refinery Ltd. (ERL), which was a subsidiary of Bangladesh Petroleum Corp. (BPC), was Bangladesh’s
sole petroleum-refining company (Bangladesh Oil, Gas and Mineral Corp., 2014, p. 38–39).
• The major public gas-producing companies, which were under Petrobangla, were Bangladesh Gas Fields Co. Ltd.
(BGFCL), Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Co. Ltd. (BAPEX), and Sylhet Gas Fields Ltd. (SGFL),
and combined produced 46.5% of the country’s total gas production for fiscal year 2014.
• The remaining 53.5% was produced by Chevron Corp., KrisEnergy Bangladesh Ltd., and Niko Resources Ltd. In
fiscal year 2014, a total of 19 gasfields were in production from a total of 93 flowing wells (Bangladesh Oil, Gas
and Mineral Corp., 2014, p. 19). Table 2 is a list of major mineral industry facilities.

Conclusions:
• Bangladesh has a number of nonmetallic mineral industries and
mineral fuel deposits
• At present NG ,coal and hard rocks are extracted commercially
• We hope, near future others would be commercially extracted including
heavy minerals because ,countries development largely depends on
proper utilization of natural resources (chart-1)
• The achievement of sustainable development of a country depends
strongly on active participation of the country’s population from top to
bottom.to get mass participation the some steps should be followed
(chart-2)
• Therefore, to achieve an educable and sustainable society , nations
must give importance to the development of mineral resources and
also mineral based industries and also to the development of human
resources which undoubtedly help to restructure and reshape the
country’s socio-economic infrastructure.
Chart – 1 (*1)
Utilization of mineral resources will help to :
1. Bring economic stability
2. Develop mineral-based industries
3. Increase job facilities / employment opportuinities
4. Increase per capita income
5. Raise overall living standards
6. Alleviate/reduce poverty
7. Reduce crime and corruption , and thus
8. Help to achieve sustainable development
Chart -2 (*1)
To get mass participation, the following steps
should be followed :
1. Develop human resources by giving proper education emphasizing the geosciences
2. Develop local expertise in order to reduce the dependency on foreign expertise
3. Encourage the population to actively participate in development activities
4. Make people understand about the contribution of mineral resources to their society
5. Motivate the population not to misuse or destroy natural resources
6. Convince people to conserve and protect natural resources for the nation’s benefit

  • 3. What is the sustainable development of a country? 3ADD A FOOTER We know development means continuous improvement which is required for all spheres of life. And the economic development that is conducted without depletion of natural resources is known as sustainable development . • The aim of sustainable development is to balance our economic, environmental and social needs, allowing prosperity for now and future generations. • Factors that affect to achieve sustainable development ; • Availability of natural(mineral) resources . • Exploration and exploitation of natural resources with proper development . • Development of mineral based industries. • Preservation , conservation and proper utilization of mineral resources • Dependence on renewable resources as much as possible .
  • 4. Sustainable Development The sustainable development of a nation’s infrastructure depend on : • Relative richness or availability of sufficient mineral resources • Technological know how • Capability to explore and exploit new mineral resources • Management capability to develop these resources properly • Wisdom in utilizing these resources properly in development activities ADD A FOOTER 4
  • 5. Sustainable Development 5ADD A FOOTER Reasons of developing countries far behind in sustainable mineral development comparing with developed countries : • Lack of good socio – economic infrastructure . • Dependency on foreign expertise which costs foreign currency. • Lack of modern technological knowledge . • Lack of educated and skilled human resources . • Lack of self confidence . • Misuse of natural resources due to unawareness / negligence .
  • 6. To get sustainable development of a country, it is required ……….. 6 To develop the mineral based industries of that country………….

  • 8. Mineral based industries in Bangladesh : 8ADD A FOOTER • The present of metallic deposits enhance the development of mineral based industries of a country but we have lack of this. • The mineral industry of Bangladesh mainly produced cement, coal, natural gas, iron and steel, petroleum, salt and stone • According to the Central Bank of Bangladesh, in fiscal year 2013 (July 2013 to June 2014), mining and quarrying accounted for about 1.6% of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP), and the construction sector accounted for about 6.9% of the country’s GDP (*3) • The country’s total exports were valued at about $29.8 billion compared with $26.6 billion in fiscal year 2013, which was an increase of 12%; similarly, the total value of imports increased by 9% to $36.6 billion from $33.6 billion in(*3) • Imports of iron, steel, and other base metals (unspecified) were valued at $2.9 billion, which was an increase of 1% compared with that of fiscal year 2013 (*3) • Imports of crude petroleum were valued at $72 million, which was an increase of 19.1% compared with that of fiscal year 2013 (*3) • The Bangladesh Oil, Gas and Mineral Corp. (Petrobangla) is the Government entity that is responsible for the exploration, production, and transmission and distribution of natural gas and oil in Bangladesh.(*3)
  • 9. Mineral based industries in Bangldesh : (*3) 9ADD A FOOTER • Petrobangla was also in charge of the development of coal and some nonfuel mineral deposits that included industrial mineral deposits • The exploration and production of coal and granite were performed by Petrobangla’s subsidiaries Barapukuria Coal Mining Co. Ltd. (BCMCL) and Maddhapara Granite Mining Co. Ltd. (MGMCL), respectively • Eastern Refinery Ltd. (ERL), which was a subsidiary of Bangladesh Petroleum Corp. (BPC), was Bangladesh’s sole petroleum-refining company (Bangladesh Oil, Gas and Mineral Corp., 2014, p. (SGFL), and combined produced 46.5% of the country’s total gas production for fiscal year 2014. • The remaining 53.5% was produced by Chevron Corp., KrisEnergy Bangladesh Ltd., and Niko Resources Ltd. In fiscal year 2014, a total of 19 gasfields were in production from a total of 93 flowing wells (Bangladesh Oil, Gas and Mineral Corp., 2014, p. 19). Table 2 is a list of major mineral industry facilities.
