The document discusses several British music magazines - Kerrang!, Rock Sound, and Metal Hammer - and how they have inspired the author's own music magazine concept called Brutal. Kerrang! is one of the oldest UK music magazines focused on rock music and is published by Bauer Media Group. Rock Sound mainly covers rock genres and is published in Britain, America, and Canada by Freeway Press Inc. Metal Hammer, published monthly since 1986, focuses on heavy metal music and is published by Future Plc. For distributing Brutal, the author proposes partnering with Bauer Media Group due to their global reach and reputation, which would help the magazine appeal to a worldwide niche audience.
2. Inspiration
When it comes to my music magazine, I have
based it on magazines of a similar genre – these
being Kerrang!, Rock Sound, and also Metal
Hammer. The magazines covering genres from
indie down to death metal, which is also what
my music magazine does.
3. Kerrang! magazine
Kerrang! Is a UK music magazine, based mainly on
the rock genre. The fire issue was printed on June
6th 1981. This making it one of the oldest music
magazines in the UK. In the 2000’s Kerrang! became
the best selling British music magazine.
The magazine is published by the Bauer Media
Group. Bauer is a multinational company which is
based in Hamburg, Germany. As well as Kerrang!
the company also publishes the magazine Q, as well
as owning it’s own radio station, and TV channel.
4. Rock Sound
Rock Sound is a British music magazine which
also focuses mainly on the rock genre, although
it does cover other areas which relate to that
genre. The magazine is mainly sold in
Britain, America and also Canada.
The magazine is published by Freeway Press Inc.
The company isn’t globalised or that well
known.
5. Metal Hammer
Metal Hammer is a British music magazine which
was first published in 1986. It is a monthly
magazine, which focuses on the heavy metal
genre, but also features genres which relate back to
heavy metal.
The magazine is published by Future Plc, a media
company which was founded in 1985. The company
is based in Somerset, and has over 150 magazines
published which are based in multiple different
fields, for example; gaming, music, television, and
sports.
6. My distribution
For my music magazine, Brutal, I would want the Bauer
Media Group to publish the magazine. The company is
globalised, which means the magazine can be sold all
around the world, instead of just being distributed in one
country. By being based with the institution the benefits
would be the fact the magazine would appeal to a bigger
audience this way, attracting the world wide niche
audience, instead of just the British one. As well as
this, the Bauer Media Group are also very popular and
well known, when the audience finds out they’re printing
a new magazine which is based on a niche audience, this
means those people will want to go out and buy the
magazine, even as a collectable item.
