As the new millennium was set to begin, Ahmed Ressam (the Millennium Bomber) was stopped as he exited a ferry crossing from Canada to a remote U.S. entry point. The contents found in his trunk would have allowed Ressam to achieve his goal of setting off an explosive device at the Los Angeles airport. This event, which occurred just two years before 9/11, led to meetings regarding the creation of some type of fusion and/or sharing process. Further discussions would advance this idea in the fall of 2002. In October of 2002, unprovoked shootings in the Washington DC metropolitan area resulted in 10 people dead and three critically injured. At the outset of these shootings, a massive police investigation across local and federal levels developed to apprehend the so-named Beltway Sniper. Local and federal law enforcement officials in the East attempted to fit the pieces together and analyze messages left by the killer or killers. This sniper case, combined with previous lessons learned, culminated in the realization for the need to formalize a multijurisdictional information-sharing activity. Most people attribute the creation of law enforcement and intelligence fusion centers with the events of September 11, 2001. However, from 1999–2002, a series of major events primed policy makers within the U.S. intelligence and law enforcement communities to formalize cross-community information sharing activities and ultimately to create an effective law enforcement and intelligence information-sharing environment.
As the new millennium was set to begin, Ahmed Ressam (the Millennium Bomber) was stopped as he exited a ferry crossing from Canada to a remote U.S. entry point. The contents found in his trunk would have allowed Ressam to achieve his goal of setting off an explosive device at the Los Angeles airport. This event, which occurred just two years before 9/11, led to meetings regarding the creation of some type of fusion and/or sharing process. Further discussions would advance this idea in the fall of 2002. In October of 2002, unprovoked shootings in the Washington DC metropolitan area resulted in 10 people dead and three critically injured. At the outset of these shootings, a massive police investigation across local and federal levels developed to apprehend the so-named Beltway Sniper. Local and federal law enforcement officials in the East attempted to fit the pieces together and analyze messages left by the killer or killers. This sniper case, combined with previous lessons learned, culminated in the realization for the need to formalize a multijurisdictional information-sharing activity. These are the current events I chose. I believe both of them tie directly to things we have covered in the last two weeks.
Five Handguns Caught at Baltimore/Washington Checkpoints in June
So far this has brought the total for this year to just one less that the total for all of 2020. In each instance TSA found the guns using x-rays for carry-on bags during passenger check in. This ties to the course so far because TSA was created for homeland security, and this is an example of the work they do.
White House urges mayors to meet with state cybersecurity officials on ransomware.
The White House is asking for Mayors to be more proactive with their cybersecurity measures in light of all the recent ransomware attacks. This is tied to this course so far because we have covered homeland security policies, and even spent some time coming up with changes we would suggest to help. This article pushes that further by acknowledging that it is an ongoing issue that we must all stay on top of.

The McDonald’s Corporation sustained a data breach when it was discovered that unauthorized activity was being performed on an internal server from outside sources (Haddon, 2021). The crime affected some data from the U.S., South Korea, and Taiwan operations. Employee and customer personal information was compromised, but no financial data was compromised. I use this is as an example of a cybercrime being committed to a U.S. based company with International operations. These are the current events I chose. I believe both of them tie directly to things we have covered in the last two weeks.
Five Handguns Caught at Baltimore/Washington Checkpoints in June
So far this has brought the total for this year to just one less that the total for all of 2020. In each instance TSA found the guns using x-rays for carry-on bags during passenger check in. This ties to the course so far because TSA was created for homeland security, and this is an example of the work they do.
White House urges mayors to meet with state cybersecurity officials on ransomware.
The White House is asking for Mayors to be more proactive with their cybersecurity measures in light of all the recent ransomware attacks. This is tied to this course so far because we have covered homeland security policies, and even spent some time coming up with changes we would suggest to help. This article pushes that further by acknowledging that it is an ongoing issue that we must all stay on top of.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in Education
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
