Podcasting is advantageous for companies of all sizes and can be easily produced with only a few pieces of equipment. We will focus on both hardware and software used in the process, and you’ll also find links to the cheapest places to find some of these items.

2. Essential Podcast Equipment
 IR Smartt has been producing the IR Chat Podcast
for a while now, and we‟d like to share more
information about the equipment used in
podcasting.
 We will focus on both hardware and software used
in the process, and you‟ll also find links to the
cheapest places to find some of these items.

3. A Computer
 A computer is your first piece of gear. You‟ll be using it to
record, edit, and store your podcast files.
 Either a PC or Mac will do the trick. Stay away from
Chromebooks as they don‟t really have enough RAM.
 We primarily use our 2013 Macbook Pro, which has HD
recording from its webcam if you want to try video
podcasting.
 If you have a Mac Mini you will need to add mic and
headphone jacks. Try the Griffin iMic.
 Be sure to keep about 2-3 gigabytes of memory free for
recording.

 2-3 Gbs of free hard drive

5. Broadband Internet Connection
 Although not equipment, your internet
connection is vitally important.
 Most connections offer faster
download speeds than uploads, so
keep that in mind, especially on
copper wire.
 Mobile and wireless connections are
becoming fast enough to handle
audio uploads.
 T-Mobile can definitely do the job if
you don‟t have home internet.

6. A Microphone
 There are a lot of microphones
available. You can probably start
with your iPhone headphones to
begin with and upgrade when you
decide to invest in your setup.

immediately when plugged into an
Apple device.

7. Headphones
 Editing is best done with
headphones to allow for
more precision.
 Headsets are an option to
combine your mic and
headphones, but the sound
quality is likely not the same.

8. Pop Filter
 This is optional, but can really add to
your sound quality. This will filter out
popping sounds made when saying
letters like “p.”
 We‟re not talking about the clownnose looking covers you see on mics;
that won‟t do the trick. A pop filter is
basically screen material stretched
over a hoop that is held in front of
the mic.

9. Skype
 Although you can use Google+ Hangouts, GoToMeeting,
or even calling right from Gmail, we think Skype is the
best free way to make VOIP Calls.

10. GarageBand
 GarageBand „11 is easily the best software available to record
and mix your podcast. It‟s intuitive and starts right up with
tutorials and get the most out of your equipment.
